First of all, giving them one star is WAY to generous. They totally messed up the trimming of my eucalyptus tree, I wanted it shaped and slightly trimmed and they left it looking like a twig. Its almost impressive how poorly the job was done. The overpriced price tag was even more impressive. They were also over an hour late to the agreed time, and when I called to ask if they were still on their way, no one picked up. Getting the initial quote was equally painful, the management there is very disorganized and rude. Be careful on validating the bid for the work requested is complete. I had their estimator come out to quote the removal of two small trees and replace them with the exact same tree with all work from a-z. Received a quote for $425.00. Called back to revise my request that I only wanted one tree re-planted and that I had already removed the dead tree. That quote was $490.00 for picking up a tree I purchased and planting it in the spot the old tree was that was no longer there. Spoke with Leilani R and she advised me the original quote of $425.00 was just for removal of the old tree and not re-planting a new one as per my conversation with the estimator when he visited to job. She said the re-planting is done by another team, and I never received that quote as she said I would for the two tree replacements. My suggestion is to be very careful when asking for a job quote, that it includes the exact services from a-z and not just part of it. They tried to play the bait and switch with me by presenting an incomplete quote. I would not recommend them. read more

If you are a billionaire, Gruett is the tree company for you. Their office staff is friendly and responsive. Their arborists are knowledgeable and skillful. Unfortunately, their prices have skyrocketed over the past two years. When they came to my house in September of 2020, they charged me $175 to trim two trees in my front yard. In July of 2021 they charged me $325 for trimming the same two trees. In June of 2022 they quoted me $625 to trim the same two trees. This kind of price increase seems insane and is beyond my budget. I'll be looking for a more reasonable arborist for the non-billionaires. read more

Hack job! I paid over $1,000 to have my trees trimmed and Gruett butchered them. Gruett has trimmed my trees for at least 10 years. The trimming job they did this last time looks as if it was done by an untrained crew. As Gruett was non-responsive for weeks after my initial complaint, I had another company out to look at the trees. I was told the trees will need corrective pruning this summer, there is nothing that can be done at this time. Additionally, the trees are most likely in shock and there is a possibility that I will lose the willows. 8+ weeks after my complaint, Gruett sent out an arborist. His first comment after seeing the trees was "the good news is these trees grow fast." They took lots of photos, listened to my concerns and request for a refund and said they would get back to me. This company was so polite, on time, clean, wore masks, had a great attitude, and was friendly. I will definitely hire this crew again. Our mature ficus tree was damaged thank to a construction crew and Gruett was called to the rescue. You cannot find more qualified, expert professionals to deal with the health of your trees. We were extremely impressed with the knowledge of the team members and their thorough evaluation of the tree's condition and recommendations for treatment. While here, they brought to our attention impaired and unhealthy top growth in our mature cedars and liquidambars. The Polyphagous shot hole borer beetle had invaded all of our trees and treatment was recommended. So thankful to Gruett for noticing this invasive bug and treating our gorgeous, mature trees! We would have lost 13 gorgeous, mature trees if it were not for their watchful eyes. I highly recommend calling Gruett if you have health concerns for your mature trees! read more

I hate writing negative reviews but this is a must. We've used Gruett several times and have been generally satisfied with their services. However, it appears they have gone downhill and all of the negative reviews on Yelp are in line with what we've experienced lately, as follows: 1) Complaints about their accounting appear accurate. We've experienced similar debacles and unprofessionalism (particularly from Kara). 2) Tree stump wood chips flew all over my neighbors yard. After my neighbor complained (also a former Gruett customer), they were dismissive about having to come back to cleanup. 3) Don't let them touch your irrigation system. The irrigation they installed was a hot mess. Water doesn't reach the trees and ponds everywhere except at the desired locations. Leaks everywhere. They came out to repair but the same issues remained. We didn't bother to call them again because the workmanship was so piss poor. We will be hiring another company to redo the irrigation. 4) Did I mention Kara? See all of the complaints here on Yelp about her. How does she keep her job? Gruett has trimmed my two California Pepper trees yearly for about three to four of the last five years. I was always happy with there professional work and their pricing was also competetive. This year I wanted one of the pepper trees trimmed and the other removed, as well as some other small bushes trimmed. I almost fell over when I got the estimate. They were charging more to trim the one remaining tree than they had always charged me to trim and lace both trees. The tree and stump removal as well as the small bush trimming estimates were way out of whack. At least 50% more than what I felt it should be. Bottom line, I ended up going with another tree service from the area who is also liscensed, bonded and insured and it ended up costing me LESS THAN HALF of what Gruett quoted me! The other company did a very professional job and there was no downside. In my opinion the guy who comes out should be estimating the job, not someone looking at a few pictures back at the office. That is why I think the estimate was way off base. The field person apparently can not estimate the job. (unlike their competitor) The estimate must be e-mailed or phoned to you later. Huh? The person at the office didn't realize the job was fairly simple and should have been priced more fairly. I thought, I could call and haggle with them, but why should I have to? I gave them 3 stars because prior to this, I was fairly happy with them. Now it seems they have scared me away with their new prices. read more

We have used Gruett for years for keeping our trees trimmed right (not just whacked shorter so they just grow back bushier than ever). We were told by our HOA that two of our trees were infested with borers and had to be removed. Gruett sent two teams: one to cut down and cart off the tree trunk and limbs and another to dig out the roots. They advised us about having a utility check performed, they suggested trees with a better chance of success in the drying climate, and offered to buy and deliver them to be planted after the roots were out. We had a huge Pine tree removed from our front yard and the crew did an awesome job. It took 5 guys and 2 truckloads to complete the job. They were very professional and used many safety precautions. This tree was very close to the front of our house but these guys protected our windows and the job was completed without any damage to the house or our yard. Vince says he'll talk to a supervisor and Diana says I'll fax you. All to no avail. I have used them once before and they did great work and the crew is professional. However their customer service team in the office is really bad. I had a mix-up on my quote (which was my fault), when I called them back to get a new quote, they put me on hold and THOUGHT they were on mute too, well they were not. You should have heard what they said about me! When I told them that I heard everything they said the gentleman said that they were having a bad day and he said sorry. I would really like to use them again because they do good great work, however the office team was sooooo mean I just cannot bring myself to call them back. Waste of $250.00. I was accused by our hoa of damaging common area trees by zealously pruning overhanging branches. At my request, for a fee of $250.00, three gruett employees came to assess the trees. The gruett employees viewed the over pruned trees and acted like I committed a crime. One employee referred to a tree as "she". However, they could take tree and soil samples to prove in court the trees were not damaged. They even had a tree attorney they could recommend. The information Gruett gave me was nothing I haden't already read on the Internet . The tree company that made the original accusation has made a new assessment of no damage. In fact the trees are healthy and never looked more beautiful! Gruett tried to take advantage using scare tactics to drum up business. read more

I've used Gruett several times and found their field teams to be very competent. That said, I've been trying to get an arborist to look at my olive tree for the last two weeks. The first time, they said a specialist would call me back and set up an appointment, they never did. The second time I called, we set up an appointment, I took time off from work and he/she never showed up, never called. I have never written a negative review on any company before, but would like to save the next poor soul the pain and headaches experienced with Gruett. I contracted them to take down 3 trees. One of the trees needed the root ball removed. After paying them $8,045, they came to remove the root ball, they left a broken pipe with gushing water, reconnected the wires to the irrigation system incorrectly and shorted the entire system out. This was during an August heat wave and I nearly lost all of the plants in the yard. I called repeatedly to have them fix the problem. They sent their men in with no shovels. The workers turned on the water without the timer system and took a photo to "prove" that the irrigation system still worked. They did fix the pipe, but I had to hire another irrigation company to find and dig up the wires that were crossed and then rebuild the entire system. I called repeatedly for help as I was out of town and just got rude managers telling me that they had proof that the system was working. read more

scam artists , over priced & unreliable , set up appointment to shape our tree 3 months in advance for a 7:30 to 9 am slot we call & they say we been pushed back to an afternoon window , they showed up 2:40 but not to do a tree shaping but to cut a tree down, we were told the shaping was canceled & they were there to remove the other tree, which we paid them way to much money to save , I believe they knew the tree was to far gone but con us in to thinking it was save able $1500.00 wasted. we fired this company. we had things planned we had to do that day that never got done no thanks to Gruett . First I will talk about their work trimming trees. They were perfectly adequate yet overpriced (I found out later). They trimmed 5 large trees on my property. When the branches fell, they left bark and sap marks on the painted house and detached studio. The second and last time I used them was when we had a tree issue and needed an arborist to diagnose severely damaged roots on a 60ft sycamore. They sent a arborist who was supposed to diagnose the health mainly of the sycamore but said their service would look at all of the trees on the property and include the health check for the fee we paid. I will give him credit for showing up promptly and doing his measurement on the sycamore and a Carob tree (he kept referring to as an Oak tree in the report). He said unfortunately the sycamore would eventually die and fall over but the oak tree was ok. They gave a quote of around $4K to remove the sycamore, which lead to getting other quotes and our realization that we WAY over paid for previous service (and yes the new company was bonded, insured, and professional). Now here is why I rate them as low as possible....The day the aroborist came to the house, we paid him in full via check. He said the report could take upto 5 days but would probably be to us by Monday. One week past...then another..We both called and sent emails requesting the report, before it was finally received. As mentioned above, the arborist kept calling the Carob tree an Oak tree but now in his report he said he recommended the tree be removed as well. I'm not sure if he was trying to cover himself legally in case anything happened with the tree in the future or if he had just forgot to do the report and couldn't remember. Either way, don't tell me one day everything is fine just give it extra water then a few weeks later say take down a 50ft tree. Now lets get to the billing. Like mentioned, we paid him in full the day of service via check on 2/17/18. The check cleared on 2/20/18 so they had no problem depositing the check. Through Aug they have set at least 5 or 6 emails requesting payment. We have on each of the requests provided the previous email communications responses saying we paid along with a copy of the cleared check. We thought everything was finally done as we had not heard from Gruett's in 2 months, then all of a sudden...Again...Another bill saying we need to pay. If they can't figure out how to mark a PO/invoice as paid, it makes me question if they even know what they are doing on the tree side...Oh and one last thing, they never completed the health check on any of the other trees as promised even after we pointed it out. Gruett has been to my hillside property numerous times. Every time was a good experience. For health care, they are the absolute best. I had others out, and the other company actually sprayed fluids that KILLED my trees almost immediately. Gruett uses the latest technology with systemic treatments etc. For tree care, I have not experience any of the issues the recent one star people state. They are coming out in a month and i will circle back with a new review if they do not. Price wise, yes you may pay more, but do you want some unlicensed, under or non insured company removing tree limbs from above your roof? Their cust svc has always, for years, been good. read more
