So to begin this place I've had on bookmarks for a while but it was absolutely nothing special at all and I wouldn't come back here. Started with clam pie . Nice smell , not much clams and even less flavor on it , more dough than anything . The polenta fries were the one and only main highlight . I'd order them often and anytime I'm craving a fries yummy item Then I got the steal and potatoes the cook was perfect on the inside but outside disintegrating have that fire char, zero flavor on the steak not a sprinkle o le flavor or salt anywhere to Be found and the potatoes just fried good with zero flavor as well. Was a complete waste of 50$ Then we got the pasta and chicken parm . Chicken not bad prep sauce and cheesy but sauce that covered that and the pasta was just tomato sauce and zero flavors of basil or anything else at all. Service was great and saved this place from 1 star. Would not come back here for sure. read more

I've been coming to Grotta for years. And it genuinely never disappoints. I forgot to take pictures of everyone's food but my ricotta gnocchi is always delicious and pillowy. I've have gnocchi from other Italian spots and honestly, this is the only on Long Island that I like. The Cosmo and Chianti were delicious as always. The bartenders here are great. The other guests I was with got the linguine and clams which they say always come out to perfection. Grotta is always busy but a warm atmosphere. Will be coming back here! Will make sure to get better photos next time, the ones I took don't do this restaurant justice. read more

I came here with a group for a small party (12 people). We had ordered pizza, fried polenta, mussels, and meatballs to share for the table. We really enjoyed all of it. Our food came out very quickly. For dinner I ordered the ricotta gnocchi with sausage. It was very creamy and tasty. The portion was pretty large! I specifically ordered pasta because they make all of their pasta in house and it really was very good. My husband ordered the pork shank and he also raved about it. The waiter did forget to put in his order, however. He made up for it by offering him a drink on the house. Thankfully there were still some appetizers for him to snack on while he waited for his meal. It was really not a big deal - we did not make a big stink about this and assured the waiter it was fine. Went in tonight for the first time with a friend. She raved about this place and I was very excited. We waited for someone to come over to the host stand for 5/10 minutes and then she finally got up from the bar after finishing talking to a friend. Quoted us 20 minutes and took our number. Ended up going over to the bar and decided to sit there and when I told the hostess she informed me they had a reservation for the bar coming in about 15 minutes but we would sit there until then. Literally never heard of the restaurant doing that. Strongest cosmo I've ever had (loved it but oh my god) and when we got sat our server took almost 20 minutes to come over. Finally ordered everything at once. Asked for a bottle of wine and our server acted like they did not do bottles even though they're on the menu? Another server brought over the wine and broke the cork in the bottle. Honestly, not a big deal but she went to the hostess to help her open it which seemed weird. Food was incredible, the veal was insanely tender and flavorful. Also got the fig pizza which was fantastic and the gnocchi. Best pasta i've had in a long time, cooked perfectly. After 45 minutes our server comes back over and while spraying and wiping down the table next to us says "too full for desert?" then brings us our checks. Not as expensive as we expected which was nice. Then proceeds to start making jokes with us and being overly nice. Left 20% because i'm not an asshole but I think i'll stick with takeout. it's such a pretty place and i understand having a busy night but i feel like if they supported staff more or maybe retrained it would be perfect. read more

I love that as soon as you walk down the steps, it really does feel like you're in a grotto. We sat at the bar and were served by Emily. She was so sweet. We got a few cocktails. The the bees knees was our favorite! So fresh and bright with that aloe liquor. The giggle juice and Persephone were nice as well. We got the polenta fries, they were so crispy and then the warm polenta on the inside. Polenta is such a comfort food. It was served with the peppery cream sauce. For entree we got the striped bass and the gnocchi. The fish sat on top of these little roasted potato coins which were so good. I wish the spigarello kale was a little more leafy. The gnocchi has so much sausage. They did not skimp. The sauce wasn't runny it was a hearty dish. We were definitely quite full after. The only con was it took a while to get our food but that could've been a fluke. Loved our experience here! read more

Food, staff, drinks, and atmosphere were all great!! Had the Bee Sting with Gin. It was fresh and light. The octopus appetizer was delicious, but the portion was a little small. Otherwise, it was cooked perfectly and the flavors were excellent. We ordered the pizza that was a special for the night. They were more than willing to accommodate us and remove the meat since two people in our party were vegetarian. The pizza was thin, had the perfect speckling on the bottom, crispy, and a little sweetness from the caramelized red onion that was offset by the saltiness of the manchego and fontina cheeses. I wish it wasn't just a special as I would order this again and again! For dinner my husband had the scallops. They were sweet, tender, and flavorful. I ordered the bone-in veal Parmesan. This is the only place that the meal missed the mark. I'm not sure if it was a mistake in the kitchen, but while the veal was cooked nicely, and very juicy, it had no seasoning. It was topped with cheese which is normally a little salty, but I was desperate for any bite to have even the slightest bit of salt. So this one was a bit of a disappointment. My son ordered the Sunday sauce, this was fantastic!!! I've never been wowed much by meatballs at restaurants... this was the best meatball I've had at a restaurant! Ever! Purely delicious!! Soft, and light in your mouth and covered with a slathering of their slow cooked sauce. Yum! We also had the Bronzino (not pictured) and the margarita pizza. Both were delicious! Solid Italian place in Long Beach!!! I came here with a friend, but it's also perfect for date night. I got the squid ink pasta with a pork ragu, it was phenomenal. I literally licked the plate clean. On the menu it said spicy which worried me, but it really wasn't spicy. My friend got the margarita pizza with the buffalo mozzarella and it was fantastic brick oven pizza. You can see how they make the pizza fresh right in front of you. We were so stuffed that we took the dessert to go. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the tiramisu but it was delicious!!! So creamy with the perfect amount of espresso. I would say 3.5 starts overall. My date ordered the scallops, I ordered the branzino. Both were fine but the flavor was lacking a bit in my opinion. Cooked well and all but just not much to it. Mine came over beans and a few tiny potatoes, also just fine. Portions were ok for the price. For dessert, we ordered the pistachio tira masu...tasted nothing like pistachio. Just had a rich chocolate flavor. Again, just fair. The service was a bit slow and we had to flag down a waitress every time we needed anything. Till a while just to place the order. They were busy of course so can't fault them. Overall, the meal was good but nothing spectacular. Not over priced but not inexpensive either. read more

My favorite date night spot to come to with my boyfriend! This is one of those restaurants where each time you go it's ALWAYS good and they never lose their touch. Super cute and intimate and right on beech street so you can go out to one of the bars and grab a drink after! Every time we come we get the polenta fries (so good, you must try), cacio e pepe (not on the menu but they prepare it when you ask for it!) and some type of pizza pie. Our favorite used to be the hot honey one with Brussels sprouts which they took off the menu but they have a diavola one that is just as good! They have a lot of dishes with Nduja which is an Italian spicy salami spread from Calabria, if you see it on the menu, order it! It's very hard to find a good one in the states! Also for drinks: you must try the Calabrian Margarita, sweet but spicy and incredibly delicious! One of the best Cocktails I've ever had read more

3 smiling adults at GDF on a Sunday pm. Believe it when I tell you that the two men here are not easily or often impressed by food and service at a restaurant. That said, THIS IS A FIND, people. The Black Sea bass, mussels, and linguine white clam all were 1) cooked and seasoned perfectly and 2) presented beautifully. On other tables I saw similarly nicely-arranged plates, especially a parmigiana (chicken maybe, not sure) was humongous and looked great-gotta try that next time. Our server margaritte was super nice and patient and the guy who brought out the food also so polite and gracious. I will definitely go back to this place. They don't cramp you with tables one on top of one another either-plenty of room. Really so glad we tried this place. Maybe the second place I ever gave 5 stars in LB. Came with four guests from out of town after a fun beach day in September. My gnocchi with crumbled bacon on top and a creamy pink sauce was divine, and every guest declared their dish delicious. Our guests love seafood, and I'm allergic, so we've tried several Long Beach places for them. Grotta DF pleased them all! Service was genuine and welcoming (without being falsely solicitous) -- love the relaxed vibe! Next time, if we can, we'll dine outside; our table, front right, was in a bit of an echo chamber and we had to shout to chat.
