My visit to Gris-Gris was unplanned and luckily there were a few bar spots available for our group. We likely would've been turned away otherwise without a reservation (they seemed fully booked for the day). We enjoyed a quick happy hour at the upstairs bar and had light bites and a drink. Their happy hour menu was pretty decent and prices were reasonable. I opted for the gumbo and a michelada (made with miller high life). I thought the gumbo had a nice flavor and I was surprised that I enjoyed the miller michelada since that's an odd choice for the beer. For you dog lovers, they have a "yappy hour" for the pups.
Stopped by for a light dinner. Since it was on and off raining during our visit, they sat us at the bar instead of our preferred patio selection. The gumbo was on point. Get it. The chicken gizzard grillades were tender and not chewy or grainy. Amazing flavor. A sleep is the watermelon salad. They use local fresh grains topped with watermelon and feta. Amazing. The oyster poboy was packed! The baguette was super soft and the oysters were fried to perfection. Fries were somewhat mid.
This is my second time coming. First time I came for brunch this time I came for a late lunch and it was packed. Unfortunately this place is closing at the end of the month. I had the oysters blt and the pork belly. I enjoyed both. This place isn't your typical restaurant as its bar seating and high tops only. Overall food is good and glad I came back before it closes permanently. Service was quick and food was flavorful.
Gris-Gris is worth the stop, but be prepared, it took a bit of patience to find parking. Once inside, the layout is part of the experience. The first floor has a bar where you can sit and watch the kitchen plate the food, which is a nice touch. Upstairs offers more formal seating along with a balcony, giving the place a different vibe depending on where you land. We ordered the shrimp and grits, and they lived up to the hype, excellent flavor, well-balanced, and cooked exactly right. We also had the cast iron seared fish, which was swordfish that day. It was seasoned perfectly and very tasty, with no need for anything extra. Overall, the food was well-executed and thoughtfully prepared. If you're looking for a New Orleans spot that takes its cooking seriously without being over the top, Gris-Gris delivers.
First time here and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We all agreed that what truly made this meal special was our spectacular server whose name I cannot recall for the life of me! ( too much wine?) She was a gorgeous, curly haired redhead that my daughter said " could have sold us anything!" She had a voice like honey and reminded me of actresses from the old days. One of the top five servers I have EVER had! There are not enough stars for her! The food was very good. Chicken and dumplings soup was good (not quite as good as mine according to the child I birthed) and the fried oysters were quite good as well. I don't know why I don't like bacon with seafood dishes, I just don't. I like them both, just not together so I happily gave the bacon away. Gumbo had quite a dark roux and no okra( sad here) but it was quite tasty. I will definitely return for some fish dishes that I saw on other diners plates. I wasn't with fish lovers so I got voted down. Will be sneaking back on my own! Cute place. Would happily return.
Came for happy hour - the pours are generous. The snack options are good pairings with the drinks. The happy hour app portions were generous. A nice snack before dinner. I ordered the artichoke and spinach dip, gumbo, and drinks. The gumbo was delicious. I would order again.
First. This is not 11-30 person. As two $$ insinuate. I think YELP needs to change it to three. Now for the restaurant itself. First, we asked about to not sit in a high top. We were told there was a table upstairs inside. When we get upstairs it only had high tops. The girl apologized but never offered to change it. We went with it because it does have a foot bar. There are some back issues in our party. The appetizer BLT was good. I felt it needed a little more sauce, but not much. The flavor pallet was well balanced. The duck breast was a little overcooked with no jalapeño taste to the jalapeño jus. However, it had good flavor. The portion is not large, and you will want to order a side. The chicken and dumplings are homey, but a little different. It has a creamier flavor-which I liked. The dumplings are large drop dumplings. I would have liked for the flavor of the soup to have permitted more than the exterior to take on the flavor. This was a heartier dish than the duck. I really felt everything overall was tasty, but each item had something that could have been executed a bit better. Our server was polite and helpful. I would add if sometimes insensé bothers your sinuses you might want to take a spot outside.
I'm literally in love. This spot. OH MY!! I was DYING to stop into Gris Gris for a drink. But my friend wanted to keep walking. I saw the Gris-Gris to-go-go and said okay let's see what's in there. BOY am I glad I did. I'd been looking for NOLA souvenirs for my man and my kids but it was all too cheesy touristy stuff. And awful quality. But this place NAH. It had THE stuff. Crystals for my kids, a cute halter half shirt for my daughter, and a tee for my man that was SO soft and said "I'll dance at your funeral and you dance at mine." With the Gris- Gris logo. Everything was high quality, soft fabric. I got a koozi because I too needed a cool souvenir from there. The hilarious part is I was SO thirsty that I grabbed a Liquid Death sparkling water (plain,) as soon as I walked in. Hydration was MY MAIN goal. Then I started looking around and was like OMG this place is EPIC!! The ladies who rang me up were so friendly. So kind. They let my Friend use the restroom and I bought $90 in gifts. Because they had AWESOME stuff!!! Next time I'm there I'm grabbing drinks at the restaurant AND souvenirs at to-go-go!!!
I arrived here without a reservation on a Monday afternoon, but I was able to get seated right away. I requested outside seating and I sat there, but the winds and flies came at full force shortly after and so I moved seats to inside the restaurant counter area. The hosts (male and female) as well as my waitress, Angel, were all so nice about me moving seats (and I felt very bad about it since they had to clean the table twice after me in the end). My husband and I both went with the course meal which came with the choice of appetizer (gumbo or Caesar's salad), entree (chicken and dumplings or shrimp and grits) and finally the dessert which was bread pudding. Everything was very delicious and the owner who was in the kitchen himself even took the time to ask us if we needed anything and if everything was good. Everyone at the restaurant delivered superior service and food was very satisfying, I highly recommend the happy hour drinks and course meal! It was such a pleasant dining experience overall.
The Gris-Gris southern hospitality at its best. Wonderful customer service. Chilled atmosphere when you walk in. My favorite cocktail is a Long Island Ice Tea. My wife enjoyed a frozen drink called The frozen Gin Brigitte. I enjoyed the LGD Burger. It was loaded with flavor. Cast iron seared fish was delicious. Green beans were like wow. Overall it was feel good great time.
Really amazing quality eats in NOLA. The food was superb, service was speedy and attentive with thoughtful recommendations and pairings, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The weather was accommodating so we opted for outdoor seating on the terrace with our larger group. Would be back in a heartbeat if ever in the area! Highly recommend the shrimp and grits. I could drink that sauce! Their gumbo is also a must!!
I recently had lunch at Gris Gris with my main squeeze and it was a lovely experience. We shared the oysters blt and I had a Caesar salad. Both were delicious and the service was excellent. Good stuff.
Cool little spot on the north end of Magazine Street. This is one of my favorite spots to visit while I'm Uptown or when out of state friends come to visit. Indoor and outside seating. Plenty of space on the sidewalk/patio with additional outdoor seating upstairs on the balcony. The servers are always on point taking orders and refilling drinks, the food is spectacular and the portion sizes are surprisingly large. Plus, when you're done eating, there are plenty of things to do right there on Magazine if you have a free day.
Went here for dinner on my wife's actual birthday. She hand picked this place. Let me just say that this place was amazing. The ambience of the place was great the servers and hostess everything was so great. They went out of their way to make sure I experience was unique and on point we had the Private dining level which it used to be an old house so it was built into three levels of a restaurant we had the Private level which had a private bar private bathroom everything which was amazing. Our server couldn't have been more perfect and that's even before we get to the food which the food was probably the best food while I Had on this trip in New Orleans and it's definitely the best oyster poor boy I've had. We had to make another trip to Gris Gris once they announced they would be closing at the end of the month. We've been a huge fan of Chef Cook over the years and we're really sad to see this gem closing. We decided to share a bunch of small plates and split a main dish. I got the frozen espresso martini to start which was refreshing on a hot summer day. We got the house salad, oyster BLT, pork belly & watermelon, bowl of gumbo and my mom's chicken and dumplings. The gumbo was my favorite starter and it's really hard to share a bowl because you want it all to yourself! I really enjoyed the oyster BLT with the crunchy oysters and crispy pork belly pieces. The main of chicken and dumplings is the epitome of comfort food. The service was amazing and staff is attentive. The food came out pretty quickly but we weren't rushed. Before leaving we made another reservation for this upcoming weekend before we have to say goodbye for good. read more
So sad to see this place is going to close. Eric Cook is easily one of my favorite New Orleans chefs. Met him when St. John opened and he was so nice and signed our cookbook. Our server was great. They had our order in and food came out in no time. Since we're mourning we decided to get a little bit of everything. House salad, pork belly and watermelon, oyster BLT, gumbo, and the main chicken and dumplings. Everything was amazing. My favorite app though was the oyster BLT. The oysters were crispy and had tons of flavor. Their gumbo is some of the best I've ever had. You have to at least get a cup. Main was chicken and dumplings. This is peak comfort food. I could swim in it. It's rich and warm and just damn good. read more

Had a great experience at Gris-Gris. This is definitely more of a formal, upscale spot compared to a lot of places in New Orleans, and it shows in both the atmosphere and the overall dining experience. The food was excellent - really well-executed Louisiana cuisine with great flavors across the board. You can tell there's attention to detail in every dish. Service was also top-notch - professional, attentive, and friendly without being overbearing. Yes, prices are on the higher side, but that's exactly what you'd expect from a place like this. It feels justified given the quality and setting. Portion sizes were a bit smaller than I expected, but honestly, that's a minor thing in the grand scheme of the experience. Overall, a fantastic choice if you're looking for a more refined Louisiana dining experience. read more

What?! This place is incredible. Balcony seating under an umbrella is iconic. The Benedict with pork and béarnaise is smoky and rich and delicious. It's served on a croissant and is chef's kiss! The chicken and waffles is just as good. The waffles have a crystallized sugar that adds a delicious crunch. And the gumbo! Perfect spice level. Super nice chill service. Can't recommend enough. read more
Love restaurants with an open concept kitchen. Had the best dinner with friends here. Service was ok, it gets quite busy and sometimes we had to chase down our server. I highly recommend trying their pork belly appetizer and their banana bread. My TOP 3 banana breads I've had in my life. Each bite with the ice cream was perfect. After a long day of walking and shopping it was nice to take a load off at Gris-Gris. The dark wood paneling interior with industrial decor is beautiful and has a chill vibe. The staff is friendly but not overbearing. There is plenty of outdoors seating - on the sidewalk downstairs and a balcony upstairs. I was seated at the bar being a party of one. Ordered the shrimp and grits and a lemon ice box pie. The shrimps were very big and generous, the spices were perfectly done, and it was a nice portion for lunch. This is the first time I had a lemon ice box pie. I thought the filling was a bit blend, and the pie crust (graham cracker) is very thin on the bottom. Loved sitting outside and watching all the people walk by. The service was OK, but I think it was mainly because they were having computer issues. I had the pulled pork on top of a croissant with an egg and even though it was good it did not seem worth $24. But the gumbo was in fact excellent. read more
Fun dinner. Great vibe wonderful food and great service. We sat at the kitchen bar and the kitchen crew provided a very professional show as they prepare our and everyone else's food. I had the gumbo.had a great rich smokey flavor. The chicken and dumplings were great with wonderful flavor. The hostesses were a little snippy snooty which put me off from the jump. Had a feeling this was going to be a bad experience. Usually is when you start on a bad foot. But the bar tenders were great, and the food saved the day! The food was absolutely amazing. Like seriously blew my palate away each bite. Had my saying OMG and banging the bar. Place is a cool vibe w balcony or gallery. Beer was warm out of the keg so I went w a mixed drink. Pretty expensive but the food was well worth it. Highly recommend. And again the chefs saved the rating from being downgraded. It was that good! I'm a foodie and a chef and it blew me away. Exactly what I expect from NO and this price range. My party of three visited for an early Saturday dinner, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We opted to sit on the second-floor balcony, which boasts a quintessential New Orleans atmosphere, complete with charming black wrought iron railings and a perfect view of the bustling street below. The timing of our visit was strategic--Gris-Gris offers an all-week happy hour that runs until 6 p.m., and the happy hour menu is a fantastic way to sample dishes and drinks from their main menu at a more budget-friendly price. We took full advantage of this, ordering the muffuletta bruschetta and Natchitoches meat pies, along with a round of cocktails that included the Satsuma 75, Petit Daiquiri, and a classic Old Fashioned. Each drink was expertly crafted and complemented our appetizers perfectly, so much so that we ended up ordering a second round. A special mention goes to our waitress, who was not only friendly and attentive but also made sure to let us know when we were nearing the end of happy hour--giving us the opportunity to sneak in one last drink before prices returned to normal. The appetizers were generously portioned, flavorful, and satisfying, making it easy for us to decide to keep it light on the mains. Instead of ordering full entrees, we shared a bowl of the gumbo and the Whole Creole Redfish Bouillon. Both dishes were outstanding, with the gumbo being rich and hearty, and the redfish cooked to perfection--crispy on the outside, tender and flaky inside. Of course, no meal at Gris-Gris would be complete without indulging in their legendary bread pudding. Served warm and a-la-mode, it's the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal--rich, comforting, and absolutely delicious. Gris-Gris strikes a perfect balance between modern and traditional, offering a refined take on New Orleans flavors in a casual, inviting setting. I liked this place very much! The food is phenomenal! The service is pretty good. But omg make sure you have a reservation. That's so important here. Because even if you don't think they'll be busy, think again. If it starts to rain, like 80% of their seating is unusable. So make a reservation because they are worth it!!! I also like how the downstairs seating is set up. It's like bar seating but in front of the kitchen almost like a cooking demo. This would be really cool for a date night but not for those who are seeking privacy. I can't wait to go back when it's not a million degrees here in New Orleans, make a reservation for a dry night and enjoy a night at one of their sidewalk tables or their balcony overlooking magazine street. read more

Had a reservation for 1 and we arrived at 12:40. We were sat right away on this very rainy day. The waitress was great and attentive. I had a Bloody Mary and stuffed crab salad, my husband had a cup of gumbo and chicken and dumplings, my son had the chicken and avocado sandwich. Everything was good, including the bread pudding. The only thing we didn't like was the fact that a hostess came up to our table shortly after we were sat and said that because it was raining, they had limited space and the next party would be there at 2:30. That didn't sit well with us as we didn't even place our order yet and felt rushed. We deserved to enjoy our meal as much as the party that was arriving at 2:30. read more

Stopped by on a whim for a daiquiri on the fly. The decor was really nice, and the upstairs balcony added a great touch to the vibe. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, which made it easy to decide on my drink. I'm looking forward to coming back to try the food one day! read more

I was in New Orleans for a conference and was invited to Gris Gris for a meal. The food was amazing! The shrimp was fried to perfection and had a sauce that was divine. The gumbo was well flavored and shrimp and grits were savory . Lastly the dessert, bread pudding was something that my breath away. The only regret I have is not taking more pictures of the food. read more

Fantastic food, great service, love the look and feel of the place, can't say enough good things about it here. Started off with the oyster blt and that's absolutely how you want to start your meal. Went with a few friends so for entrees we got the creole redfish, the ribeye and the cast iron seared fish. Not a single complaint in here but I'd go for the creole fish. It comes out whole and it's light and flaky. Will absolutely be back. read more
Came here a little after 3 on a Sunday. Wasn't busy, so I got seated right away. Solo diner, which I'm guessing the reason the host hesitated to sit me outside. Got shrimp and grits. It came out super quick, which I shouldn't have been surprised that it was COLD! I know shrimp cools down quickly, but I felt this was precooked. The grits were super creamy, but also barely warm. I regret coming here. Drinks on other tables looked good. Not sure what all the rave reviews are about, hopefully just a bad day. read more

This place came highly recommended by a couple friends who said it was the "best food they've ever had". Had a reservation for 7pm and got there a bit early, they were able to get us in at 6:45pm. Not sure what was happening downstairs- it looked like a Benihana type situation with a bar surrounding some cooks and people sitting around with plates. We were taken upstairs where there were a bunch of high tops. The patio looked cool but it was chilly- and they kept all the patio doors open so it was too chilly for us to take our coats off inside. The ambiance was nice. Waitress was nice. I don't eat seafood and I think to have an exceptional meal, you may need to order seafood. My boyfriend did not feel like eating seafood at the time so he ordered the chicken and dumplings. I ordered the ribeye, which only came with one side. I chose garlic mashed potatoes. We also ordered a cup of chicken and andouille gumbo. The gumbo was tasty. The chicken and dumplings were good but sooo bland! It could have at least used some salt and pepper, which we did not have at the table. My steak was disappointing. It had so much fat so the edible part was so small compared to the size of the steak. It didn't taste super seasoned and came with a gravy. The gravy was bland and nothing special. The mashed potatoes were delicious. Now for $52, I feel like they could throw in a veggie with the dish. A small edible portion of steak and mashed potatoes that were just mediocre was not worth the $52. The chicken and dumplings bowl was a generous portion. We also got two alcoholic beverages. Mine was just okay. My boyfriend liked his. For a cup of gumbo, steak and mashed potatoes, chicken and dumplings, and two alcoholic beverages, we paid $127 before tip. I don't think it was worth it. I suppose seafood must be the speciality here, but the chef is famous and held in high regard, so I feel like everything on the menu should be good. The menu is small. Where is the best place to sit?
At the chef table you see all the works and the food getting prepared. I thought it was a great experience watching and it also strikes a lot of conversations. Enjoy!

Are the business hours posted online, on yelp and on the doors at the entrance to the place accurate? I only ask because we drove over on Wednesday around 7pm and they were closed.
I'm surprised by that. Normally the post an hours or when they are truly open. I'm wondering if they had a family emergency? I always try to call ahead to make sure before I drive over
