The place is an institution in Watertown it's been around for a hundred years and it is still the same and a great place to share a meal The servers are always great and true to form remembered my mom and everything she orders which makes my mom so happy She had the fried fish and I had the protection both cooked perfectly and came out fast even though the place was super busy Everything is very reasonably priced and the portions are large I would recommend to anyone read more

Great early dinner meal. 16.25 for a soup or salad; chicken parm with 1 side (or other options as mean, see special menu) ; and it came with desert (ice cream flavors or pudding/tapioca). Nothing to complain. It was excellent just don't expect fast service.....it's a local restaurant so waiters chat a lot with the clients. But you take it as it is, food and price are amazing! Crowded. I did not realize it but there is early bird special if you sit at the bar. They have a limited parking lot that you need to a magician to navigate around especially wiih more than one car trying to park Even though I sat at the bar, I a waitress took my order rather than the bartender. What's with that? I ordered a cheeese burger medium with lettuce and tomato. I came out charred well done. They charged extra for the fries which looked like they were frozen. I recently had dinner here for the first time in a while. I used to live and work nearby, so I was able come here more often in years past. I'm glad to say that they are just as good as ever. I loved my dinner as did the elderly friend who was with me. The food is home-cooking good. There's usually no to little wait for a table. The staff is very experienced and professional. Their menu offers a wealth of delightful selections. They have a parking lot next to the front entrance , but it's not huge, not exactly tiny, but neither is it big - there's about ten spots or so. The inside is homey, with a nice bar with a TV for viewing sports. read more

Place was recommended by a friend - sadly I wholeheartedly would NOT recommend this place to anyone. I am not a picky eater nor am I a picky diner. This was a HORRIBLE experience. I don't know how this place is still in business. Almost laughable how bad this place is. Upon entry it smells like urine / nursing home. No exaggeration. I thought perhaps it was a patron, nope..the smell extended into the regular dining area and persisted, disgusting. Seats in booths are collapsed in with no cushion remaining. Knife provided was excessively dirty - seemingly washed yet still covered in caked on food from a previous diner - impossible to miss. Gross. The service was horrible, not rude, but slow to the point it was almost intentional (it was not busy nor were we in a rush). Finished app plates never cleared. New incoming dishes placed on top of them. Lack of side plates for all diners. Simple things totally disregarded. We were never served our salads that were to accompany our meal. The food itself was mediocre at best. Sauce average. Pasta below average. I expected a lot more from an establishment that claims to be in its fourth generation. Owners if you read this, shame on you for letting a multigenerational family business get to this point. The conditions themselves are inexcusable. Overall was a combination of dirty, smelly, poor service and mediocre food quality led me to write this review immediately upon returning home. If you check my history here I do not review often. A vision frond wanted Italian - so we tried Greg's. So glad! The decor is vintage 1970's charming and the food is both generous and delicious. The table tried broiled scallops, replant parm, veal parm and a burger. All were wonderful. And the prices very reasonable! Hadn't been there in a couple of years. Won't wait that long again. We got the early birds - stuffed sole and baked scallops. Both were phenomenal. They came with two sides a drink, dessert and Italian bread. The prices were exceptional for the quality. Service was as good as the food, friendly and efficient. I've been going to Greg's since I was a kid - always a good fast reasonable meal. But today I got the chick/eggplant parm which was always thin and so tender you could cut it with your fork. Today the dish had a thick chunk of chicken on one end of the plate and a few slices of eggplant on the other end covered with cheese and a heavy red sauce. Do they have a new chef? Extremely disappointing - it's knocked off my list for now!! read more

Greg's worked out well for our group of 6. We got spaces in the parking lot. Although they don't take rez on weekend, we had no wait at 7pm on a Saturday night. I liked the old school funky decor and all staff were super nice. The menu was extensive and inexpensive. Everyone thought the food was good except for me, it was just ok. The marinara sauce seemed too acidic and my eggplant parm had little if any breading and big seeds. but the ziti was cooked perfectly, al dente, and the cheesecake was yummy. read more

Excellent. Went for lunch yesterday - three people having the lunch specials, sodas, and dessert = $80.00. I had a grilled a salad, grilled pork chop, and a baked potato. The meal was delicious. My Aunt lives down the road and we've been here many times. Excellent food and service. The bar tender that made my my drink tonight came to the table and asked if I liked my drink because he put soda in it, instead of Cranberry juice I think, and if I didn't like it he could fix it. I've been there before by myself, and everyone is so friendly. From a single person, I love your bar tender with the tattoos. He's adorable. Having been craving a hearty portion of beef for a while, I perused through Google looking to locally satiate my need for meat. Though I must've passed by the building hundreds of times over the years, I've never noticed Greg's until it came up on the results. This unassuming building by the Mt. Auburn cemetery is a hidden gem. I wonder how many have passed over it for the more contemporary eateries? Having no one to go with, and being a self-conscious type, I almost chickened out but promise of a meal I've been longing for said come come just do it. Greeted warmly by auntie-like staff, I passed through the bustling bar area and into the quieter dining room. Dimly lit and accented by vintage style wall sconces and fairy lights made for a cozy ambiance. Decorated tin ceiling tiles, exposed brick and warm, wood-paneled walls. Plush red leather booths and classic cafe chairs based off the Thonet 18. Like the ending scene of That Girl's first episode where Marlo Thomas' character Ann Marie and her potential love interest Don Hollinger sitting at a red checkered table for their first date, I sat down anticipating my own romantic experience with this neighborhood Italian-American restaurant with mid 20th century decor. This isn't a place that's "trying" to be of the period. Aside from the nostalgic 80's hits playing softly in the background, it's as if the place never changed, and I love that. I scarcely looked at the menu to be honest, as I knew exactly what I wanted. Prime Rib medium rare with horseradish, a side of salad and roasted potatoes. The salad came promptly, with a plate of fluffy, sesame coated Scala bread and butter. By the time I finished, my hot hot plate arrived on cue, a lovely thick portion of rib meat lightly bathed in jus. Now though I haven't had underwhelming prime rib anywhere, I am a known sinner for drowning meat in A1 and horseradish. I did decide to cut a piece and eat it with the jus alone. Oh dear readers do listen. The flavors bursted vibrantly. A touch of horseradish dotted here and there, but the steak sauce remained untouched through the duration of the meal. The next 15 minutes were just The Psychedelic Furs, Erasure, Madonna, me and prime rib. I don't remember my surroundings from being in bliss. All the anxiety I had as a solo restaurant-goer disappeared and I transcended. This is true cozy comfort of a restaurant. Next time he visits, I will bring my British partner to experience what it's like to go to what I now consider "a true American restaurant experience". Crowded local hangout ... Decent espresso martini..... Salad was bla, saving factor were the large chunks of blue cheese I had the pasta facility, probably the worst rendition ever. 95% broth, a few carrots, a few pieces of pasta and not ONE bean to be found. The recipe translates to pasta and BEANS. WTF Service very sub par, waitress would disappear for extended periods of time, tables who came in after us received their food first. My companions baked scallops were piping hot, and mediocre. I had eggplant and chicken Parm. Absolutely delicious, pity it was lukewarm at best.....pasta was cooked perfectly, sauce featured a lot of basil and oregano, yum... Dessert was an absolute disaster....my lady loves pecan pie, so we opted for the pecan pie with whiskey sauce and ice cream. A small slice of nuked pie, not enough pecans, whiskey sauce bland at best....huge DISAPPOINTMENT Food might have deserved a rating of 3, but the service knocked down the overall experience. read more

Had a bad experience with not receiving an order I placed through Door Dash from Greg's after waiting an hour for it. Door Dash blamed it on the restaurant and the restaurant blamed it on Door Dash. I called the restaurant and was upset because they just told me they had Door Dash orders turned off because they were swamped but didn't offer to prepare something for me to pickup. I have been going to this restaurant for a number of years so called the next day to speak with them about it and they apologized and sent me a gift certificate. The food is great! read more

I must have driven by Greg's at least a thousand times over the past decade. For whatever reason it never caught my interest. Tonight I went with my mom and daughter for dinner and so glad we did! It wasn't packed but they were doing a decent business on a Tuesday night. We were greeted with smiles and my daughter was immediately offered cheese and crackers - wonderful! Their menu is simple, classic, comforting, old school. Good food for good prices - they even have early bird specials. The drinks are tall and strong - for once I didn't need a second. I always like a nice cocktail menu. We started with the Fried Shrimp Scampi appetizer which was a great take on the dish. Salads that came with the entrees came out fast and fresh. I enjoyed my Chicken and Eggplant Parm, classically done. The red sauce isn't quite like my mom's but it was definitely tasty. I skipped the pasta and ordered broccoli. They offered to put garlic oil on the broccoli which was the right choice for sure! Seafood Platter with fries came out super hot. All the portions were generous. Went there the other night and had the chicken cutlet parmigiana. It was delicious. The chicken was pounded to be thin (i.e. not a large breast) and was breaded and browned perfectly. Unfortunately, the pasta side was overcooked. Maybe it was a bad pasta night. My husband had a NY sirloin that was cooked to perfection. Overall, a very nice place at reasonable prices. How is this place still open? Smelly. Total bulk canned food. Staff is typically nice, but can get grumpy if you are only one person and it gets busy. Drinks are reasonably priced, but beer selection is limited. Jarred pasta sauce, heavy and yucky meat. If you prefer quantity over quality you might like it. I prefer quality. They get an extra star for having yummy spumoni dessert. If you like a blue plate special atmosphere and don't have discerning tastebuds, this place is for you. read more

Greg's is an old time Italian family restaurant. And by "old time" I mean it hasn't been updated since the 60's I am guessing. But if you can get by the dated decor, the food is actually quite good, plenty of it and reasonably priced. Waitresses are fun and hard-working, there's a lively horseshoe shaped bar jammed with locals, and the place was rocking on the Wednesday night I was there. They run early dinner specials from 4:00pm till 5:30 which brings in local families by the hordes. There is a small parking lot but don't count on getting a space. Street parking is tough but your best bet. Family run since...well forever! Just a comfortable hole in the wall that you'd go with family, old friends or guys from your bowling league. 10 oz Prime Rib served Thursday, Friday and Saturday at market price as a special, I bet the place is packed those nights. Just get your ass down there and settle in for an amusing night with good food and friendly company!!! read more

There was a time when restaurants didn't come in a pre-fab construction kit from corporate, get assembled in 2 weeks, slap some "character" on the walls, and here's your dining experience. That's what makes Greg's great. If the outside looks good to you (it's classic), the inside experience will not disappoint. My only thing is it can get a little "cozy" when full , but that's only because the place is busy and built in weird shapes. But be aware if you're like me and don't always like being that close. Based on the reviews here, I'll have to try the garlic bread next time. I've had a few seafood things, baked haddock, stuffed sole, and something else, they were all old school recipe's, served in 3 nested casserole dishes. great. I went to Greg's tonight for the first time ever and it will definitely be my last. It was one of my first times out after becoming a new mom and I brought my one year old daughter. We arrived around 6pm and waited patiently to be seated. As we were eating our soup and bread my daughter as most one year olds do could not contain her excitement at some moments talking, blabbing, pointing, and yelling. After about an hour of wait for our food our main dishes came out and also a woman came over who I thought to be a random patron who I later learned was a cook but I never learned her name. She touched my one year olds head and asked if I could keep the noise down. I looked at her blankly and stunned as she shuffled away quickly and my server came over at the same time she was leaving with the rest of my dinner order. So I asked my server who the woman was and she had informed us she was a cook there for a very long time. When I told her what had happened she immediately apologized for her rudeness and said she had no concept of boundaries and said she was always rude to her as well and to other staff. I was so upset I just got up and left the rest of my family to finish eating and took my daughter to the car. I don't know what type of behavior this business allows its employees to get away to paying customers and to fellow employees but this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Many neighborhoods in the Boston area used to have a place like Greg's, but many of them are disappearing some being replaced by trendier impersonal places with $15 cocktails and pretentious service, others falling victim to redevelopment. Personally I prefer a place where locals of all ages seem to be regulars, and the staff is friendly (and not pretentious). We read reviews about Greg's early bird specials (but the regular prices are a deal), we stopped in about 5pm on a Tuesday before it got busy, grabbed a booth in the bar. The three of us ordered fish, it was excellent. The drinks were well-made and reasonably priced. Chris, our server, was friendly and efficient. she really knew how to work the room, getting drinks and meals out in record time (knowing when to stop by to see if we needed anything). The atmosphere was friendly, older crowd, we felt like we were on an episode of Cheers. There is a small adjacent parking lot but street parking is also an option. Location is geat, close enough to Cambridge/Boston but without the parking hassles.
