Classic Italian American food done well. Garlic bread is amazing. Like so amazing, if you get food here you have to add garlic bread. This place creates nostalgia with its comfort dishes. Great old school bar and grill. Seems that these types of places are becoming few and far between with the changing of the times. I prefer these types of places. They tend to have a real local feel with solid food and solid staff. And that is what we got today at Greg's. With the new year upon us I'm of course back on my low carb diet. The Shrimp Scampi with broccoli and no pasta was perfect. Extra broccoli and a bowl of clam chowder with me putting the potatoes aside did the trick. Waitress was also accommodating with the bf's addiction for a cup of ice along with his cup of ice water. Getting that right gets you at least a 30% tip. She did... Only issue is parking can be a little tough and bathroom is a little small but worth it for the food and atmosphere. read more

My wife and I had lunch here recently and we were very pleased with the fare offered by Greg's Restaurant. The hostess greeted us and seated us promptly. Our waitress was pleasant and professional and arrived Quickly to hand us the menus and take our orders for drinks. We decided to split an order of fried ravioli as an appetizer and also ordered sandwiches. I ordered a Reuben and my wife ordered a turkey and tomato sandwich. The fried ravioli arrived and we found it delicious. The ravioli had been breaded and was lightly crispy without being tough. It came with dish of homemade marinara sauce which was one of the best I ever had. My Reuben arrived on toasted homemade marbled rye bread. The meat was lean, succulent and piled high. My Reuben came with a side of coleslaw and nine times out of ten I get a slaw that's been nearly puréed . Not so here, my slaw was what I'd call garden style which would be coarsely chopped and not too vinegary. I'd have to say it was perfect ! My wife's sandwich was also piled high with fresh, moist and I'm told, very flavorful turkey and very fresh sliced tomato. Her sandwich was so big she couldn't finish it. There was also big pile of fried potatoes with her sandwich and if you are thing I stole a few you'd be right. Even with the two of us working on the French fry pile, we couldn't finish them. Our waitress brought us a box for the left over fries and other half of her sandwich. I'd eat here again in a heartbeat and recommend you do too ! read more

There is nothing pretentious about Greg's. This place has been a neighborhood fixture for who-even-knows-how-long, and I hope it stays open forever. I love coming here for a coupla drinks and a good old-fashioned Italian meal. Everyone who works here is super nice, and they make you feel like you're at home even if it's your first time in the door. There are no frills here. The drinks are inexpensive, and the meatballs are gigantic, and really, that's all you need to know. Oh, and they also have a small parking area. read more

Small old Italian place with great food. My family has been coming here for decades and we can't get enough of their tomato sauce. Early bird prices cannot be beat - you get a soup or salad, entree, tea or coffee and dessert for around $12. (See photo of menu I uploaded) The chicken parm is just perfect, but my pasta was a bit overcooked and not really worth eating, but the sauce is fantastic. Service is nothing special- but it's friendly and efficient. I thought the soups were WAY TOO salty - so I recommend a salad with dressing on the side. read more

When you go out for Italian you want an old school type of place, family run and operated with their own recipes. If you live near Watertown and have never been to Greg's then you are missing out. I know people love the Chateau locations or the numerous establishments in Waltham, but this joint in Watertown has all you need. It has a great lunch and early bird menu. They make one the best burgers in Watertown served w chips or steak fries. They make a great meatball sandwich. That's just on their lunch menu. The appetizers are up to date with today's crowd and still have the old time classics like mozzarella sticks and toasted ravs. They have added wings to the menu which give the best wings around a run for it's money. People love their Veal, I am not a Veal guy, but friends who have ordered it and people I've talked to said it's one of the best around. I love their BBQ Half Chicken, great marinade and better than the half chicken you get over at the Aegean. For dinner their Shrimp Scampi is perfect. Great fresh shrimp in a better than you would think garlic sauce. Great for having your side of bread to dip in. The steak is up there with the best downtown. They have a great strip sirloin and you can tell it's a fresh cut when biting into it. Get it with a baked potato for a side w cheddar and bacon on top. My favorite dish, of course, is the Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana. I have yet to find a better chicken parmigiana dinner in all of my outings. The cutlets are perfectly breaded and cooked and served pipping hot with melted cheese and tomato sauce. The pasta is great too. More times than not you'll be walking out with leftovers. The bread they start you off with is delicious and the salad that comes in between is well prepared. Parking can be tight, they have a horseshoe type of bar that has plenty of seating, a small draft selection and the usual beer bottle selection with some great cocktails. The wine list is top notch with one of my favorites on there Oyster Bay, can't go wrong with a few bottles of that. Great service and a great product will make you keep coming back over and over again. Great lunch deals and and even better early bird special make this local favorite. read more

I've always driven past here on Mount Auburn Street on the way to Harvard Square, and always wanted to know how good it was. My fiance and I wanted to go and get breakfast at the Deluxe Diner on Mt. Auburn, but they were very busy from the looks of the place from the outside. It was about noon by then. We decided to drive further down the street to Greg's, and we were more than pleased. We wanted breakfast, but lunch was way better at the time. My fiance and I shared mozzarella sticks for an appetizer, and we loved the basket of bread. For entrees, I got clam chowder with a ten ounce steak and vegetables, and my fiance ordered baked manicotti with a fresh salad. The clam chowder and salad were both fresh and very tasty. Our entrees were very well portioned and also very tasty. The mozzie sticks were, well....mozzie sticks (fried cheese...you could never go wrong here...). Service was impeccable, and our waitress was more than attentive and polite to us. We will definitely be visiting Greg's again in the near future! read more

Dropped in tonight after some co-workers talked about their chicken parmesan subs. I went with the "early bird" earlier reviewers have mentioned... and a chicken parm entree was one of the options... I'm including an iPhone pic of the others. Dude... $10 for a salad, huge serving of bread, the chicken parmesan with penne or linguini, coffee/tea and dessert? Are you freakin' kidding me? For $10, I was expecting some leftover frozen dinner from Stop N' Shop nuked. Salad was eh, forgettable. But fresh, good... decent size especially for the price. The chicken parmesan - KILLER! Awesome. Chicken has the perfect texture... it was fresh, the sauce was incredible. The penne was good, but the chicken ... wow. Two big pieces too. I skipped the coffee and they actually brought my bill to me before any mention of the dessert which was a little weird, but I grabbed a tapioca to go. I think my waitress thought I said tapioca instead of to go... because I definitely would have opted for a different dessert, but after that meal, I wasn't eating anytime soon anyway. I'm 6'4 and 250 pounds and that chicken parmesan more than filled me up. Service was eh. I would give it 4 stars, but the price was really amazing. And there are way too many negative reviews on this place, so it gets the 5th star because generally I don't do many spots for the first time that have fewer than 4 stars on Yelp. read more

Greg's a a great old school kind of place with large portions for short money. There are not too many of these types of places left. I would definitely eat there if I was in that neck of the woods. It is delightful that it is there considering how close it is to Harvard Square where many businesses rip one off. They have their own free parking lot too. read more

Greg's Restaurant is truly a find. It is the best place in the area to go for filling and affordable Italian food. Yes, you could go to Pomodoro, or even the North End, but to me, Greg's gives you a lot more food (and a lot more personality) without the price tag, attitude, or wait that you'd expect from other places. When I moved to Cambridge, it took me about a year to try it, simply due to the location/exterior appearance, but shame on me for being snobby. Their eggplant parmigiana is among the best I've had, and I'm from NY. It's so good I've never ordered anything else! Friends and family have vouched for the quality of their fried fish, scallops, shrimp, lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and prime rib. Drinks are STIFF, and they have a great wine selection that is generously poured. In the event that there is a wait (during the Early Bird rush), there is a cute little lounge section with table service for drinks and a gigantic container of pub cheez and Ritz crackers, just in case you were worried that there might not be enough food. A special occasion restaurant it is not, but this plebeian cannot afford to eat five-star every night. Yeah, yeah, this place is a blast from the past but it's a past that i'd rather not revisit. The place is filled with senior citizens. The ambiance is...old? dirty? Checkered table cloths that have probably been there for 3 decades, back when the other diners were still middle aged. This would all be cool with me if the food was good. I came here hung over with my man once for some Italian goodness. The food was gross! For some reason, certain foods remind me of vomit, they literally put a bad taste in my mouth. They include crappy iceberg lettuce salad and tomato sauce that tastes like it came from a can or a squeeze bottle. YUCK. My pasta was overcooked, the sauce tasted like regurgitated contadina, and the chicken was rubbery. I wanted to like this place, but the food just wasn't good. My best friend took me here with her daughter Julia last night, as we were trying to find a restaurant that was kid friendly, and we both wanted inexpensive Italian in the area we were passing through. She instantly brought up Greg's, she has such fond memories of this place, she told me she had been going there since she was a child. So we come in and are instantly warmly greeted. We were seated and one of the waitresses brought a high chair out immediately, Julia was doted upon and the servers all came over to say hello and talk to my friend and her baby, everyone was sooooooo nice. They brought over some bread and butter (didn't try the bread because the carbs were coming from the pasta lol). I started with a side salad and my friend had the soup, they both came with the meal, which was nice. The salad was basic, and covered with a mountain of very thinly sliced onions, iceberg, and a couple others "tid bits" added. My friend enjoyed her soup and so did the baby. My friend got her fave! The veal cordon bleu, which consisted of veal cutlets, ham, swiss, in a mushroom wine sauce. It was basically their take on Veal Saltimbocca, and she told me that she gets it every time she goes. I tried a bite and it was tasty. I opted for veal parm, which is something I never normally get, but I was having a craving, and I wanted something bad for me, carbs included :). It was basically two large veal cutlets with sauce and cheese. Both pastas for both entrees were served on the side in small bowls, and you have the option of fettuccine or penne, it is topped with their marinara. Was it the best parm and pasta? No, but it satisfied the wicked craving I was having that evening. It's also a pretty good bang for your buck. Keep in mind, this is a WICKED old school, neighborhood, feel good, kinda restaurant. Almost all of the patrons were elderly. It was warm and homey feeling with an excellent staff. ALOT of people go for the early bird specials; choice of soup or salad, entree (full sized), and dessert for $10.95?!??!?! That's insane. This place definitely gets props for value. We got there around 7:30 so we weren't able to take advantage. KEEP IN MIND......This is a "red sauce" type of joint. They have your basic Italian/American fare, so bear that in mind when you go. If you're looking for "different" menu items, or uber authentic Italian, just go someplace else. This is a nice place if you take it for exactly what it is. I am truly baffled by the amount of five star and four star reviews of Greg's. Yes, our waitress was friendly, and yes, the place itself was homey, but the food was less than mediocre. I spent a better part of the morning sifting through yelp reviews trying to find some decent spots to eat at in Watertown that were actually open past 3 in the afternoon. I've been living here for over two years and have yet to eat anywhere besides Victors on North Beacon. When the boyfriend came to pick me up, famished and ready to try one of the places nearby, we agreed on Greg's. When we got there for our "late lunch", we realized everyone else in the room was retired and there for the "early bird specials". No problem. We ordered the Large Antipasti to start and then I got the Veal Parm with linguine and a side of broccoli and he got the Stuffed Chicken also with pasta and broccoli. My first and biggest complaint, what the waitress put in front of us was most certainly NOT Antipasti. It was a Cobb Salad with canned tuna on top. It was mostly iceberg lettuce, hard boiled eggs and about three cans of tuna (which I hate). Yes, there was a small portion of marinated mushrooms, a few slices of salami and ham, and maybe four slices of cheese (I couldn't even tell if it was provolone). I come from an Italian family where before the meal begins the Antipasti sets the tone, this tone sucked. Next came the entrees. My Veal Parm was nothing special. Two over sized veal patties with a slice of cheese and what tasted like canned marinara sauce. When the waitress put it down in front of me she said "careful it's hot, it just came out of the microwave". My thought: why was my meal in the microwave? The pasta was okay with almost an entire shaker of parmigiana cheese on it, and I didn't even touch the broccoli. To be fair, the veal didn't taste bad, not home made, but not bad. I took it home and ate cold right out of the container the next day, and I kind of loved it. The Stuffed Chicken that the boyfriend got, was visually unappealing, the chicken was dry and flavorless and gravy was very salty. Again, not revolting, but not good. For dessert, the choices that came with the "Special" were Tapioca Pudding, Chocolate pudding or ice cream. None of which sounded appealing. My boyfriend got the Tapioca and licked his bowl clean (a childhood favorite apparently), and I got the chocolate pudding, which was Jello Chocolate Pudding, a childhood favorite of mine I suppose. So yes, for the price and the atmosphere I suppose this place is okay, but why this place has rave reviews is beyond me. read more

I live in Watertown and had high hopes for this place due to all the high ratings but was somewhat disappointed by the Italian food. I'm giving this place two stars b/c I liked the clam chowder and eggplant parmesan and for the excellent service provide by my waitress, who answered all of my questions and was quite attentive. I came for lunch to take advantage of the lunch specials and got the chicken and eggplant parmesan. Instead of taking the salad, I went with the soup/clam chowder because my waitress told me that the soups are house made. When the food came out, it looked good and was a good sized portion for lunch. However, when I tasted the food, it was a whole other story. If this review makes me a food snob, so be it! Firstly, the ziti was cooked more than al dente, and I didn't finish it. Secondly, the marinara sauce didn't have a fresh tomato flavor and lacked any real flavor or character to it. It almost seemed bland which seemed contrary to how it appeared, a very deep red color filled with spices. The sauce was tasteless to me. Thirdly, the cheese tasted gamey, almost as if it was some type of goat cheese, and it was just too gamey for me. It was a real turn off. I was expecting more of a mozzarella flavor. During the course of my meal, I kept on trying to figure out if the meat had gone bad or if it was the cheese. Even the chicken was tasteless, and I wondered if it had been sitting in the freezer/fridge for a while. I asked the waitress if the cheese was provolone, and she found out that it's a provolone mozzarella mix. The items that I enjoyed most were the clam chowder, which the waitress said is house made, as it had a thick and creamy consistency, almost like a porridge, reminded me of thick Chinese congee. While certainly not the level of Legal Seafood, the chowder seemed substantive. It was not a runny, watery chowder. Also noteworthy was the eggplant parmesan It's probably the best fried eggplant I have ever had. It was fried almost like a tempura, just the right amount of crunch, light, and you could definitely taste and feel the eggplant texture. It was delightful. I could see myself going back there to get just the fried eggplant sans sauce and cheese! The Chateau, a chain in the area, does a much better job for about the same price, and I'd rather go there. Greg's seems like a place that could be on Restaurant Impossible, and I could see Robert Irvine saying that the food is disgusting. But, for some reason, the place gets good business. It's certainly not gourmet food. It's a good old fashioned Chianti bottle with a Candle in it, and a checkered tablecloth, Italian Eatery. It's the sort of place where the male patrons wear white leather belts, with white shoes that match. It's the sort of place where tomato sauce gets called gravy by the staff. It's the sort of place that hasn't changed in several decades, because they like it the way it is, and who cares what you think? You really have to be open to visiting a funky old family place for this to be a positive experience. This is no yuppie joint and nobody here is focused on accommodating the quirks of Gen-X or Gen-Y This dining room, with it's retro look and feel, is packed with the parents of baby boomers. A thrifty crowd that likes a hearty meal and good value for the dollar. The fixed income crowd. Greg's reminds me of many of the old Italian restaurants that once dotted the North End. Almost all of them long since replaced by more trendy establishments that cater to a younger crowd. The lounge area here is reminiscent of a Cheers episode. Plenty of regulars from the Watertown/ Cambridge / Belmont neighborhood. All these folks keep coming back here for a good reason. Very much a local spot that has great early bird specials. With the bouncy plastic booths and the friendly waitstaff, Greg's reminds me of what it would be like to eat in the old days. I sometimes feel out of place coming here because most of the clientele is 45+ but they have always made me feel at home. Both the prime rib and the chicken parm were so huge that I had to take the leftovers home and had enough for lunch the next day. The prices are very reasonable and they have their own parking lot which helps. They offer beer, liquor, and wine so there is something for everyone. My one pet peeve is that they close early, and I eat dinner late. read more

During this terrible period we are always looking for local restaurants that we can support by ordering takeout if offered. While visiting my daughter recently we were happy to find that Greg's was open and ordered our dinner there. Great decision. Everything was fresh, hot, delicious and beautifully packaged. Prepared and presented exactly like if you were "eating in". The staff went out of their way to thank us for supporting them which was a real feel good moment. We had never eaten there before but when this is all behind us Greg's will be a regular destination.
