I've only came here during breakfast hours (until 10:30am) and both times I've gotten a latte and the potato scramble bowl with turkey sausage (great portion sized). Both were pretty good each time. The kitchen staff are very friendly and bring your food out to you, but the cashier can be a hit or miss with professionalism. Good place to work and have meetings! read more

I hate to do this to a place like this, however. It's a nice space. Big and Quiet. Comfortable seating. My tuna wrap was delicious. I ordered a drink for myself and the person I was with, I ordered 2 drinks. The cashier rung it up as the same drink. She never asked questions or clarified (if she didn't understand that's what you do) When my guest brought the drink back and very politely asked that it be remade (because it had caffeine in it and it was supposed to be without caffeine), she actually said "that's what she ordered" and was not apologetic at all and REFUSED to remake it. Someone that worked there that overheard the exchange came and remade the drink (incorrectly still but at least she tried and at least this time it had no caffeine) I have worked in the service industry for over 20 years and this is unacceptable behavior. I don't know if management corrected her but they should have corrected that behavior immediately. I wouldn't want someone with that attitude working my front end. Best of luck to this place but I hope I don't have to go back. I could understand if we were rude and obnoxious about the feedback but remaking a bar drink as a barista is an everyday thing. read more

I actually spotted the sign for Green Tomato Cafe outside of the window upon completing my workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. And prior to leaving the building itself I spotted it next to the exit and just had to stop in to take a gander at its menu. On top of offering free Wi-Fi, a selection of food and beverages, the cafe is clean and spacious with a number of tables, seats, and a area featuring furniture; giving it that comfortable homely touch for relaxation. Furthermore, along with its spacious dining area, Green Tomato Cafe has a beautiful gated outdoor patio for enjoyment during the warmer season. During my initial visit, I enjoyed relaxing on its couch while eating my meal, which was a Bacon, Lettuce, & Tomato sandwich w/ Hi-C) and reading my book post finishing my workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. Yes! It is definitely the perfect place for meetings, studying or to grab either breakfast or lunch. The menu at Green Tomato Cafe consists of your typical cafe selections followed by breakfast, hot cereals, soups & healthy choices of sandwiches & wraps along with a small selection of smoothies and shakes which coincides perfectly post completion of a workout at Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. As for parking, there is an ample amount suitable for members and guests. The main building, Lawndale Christian Health Center has its own lot, plus if it gets congested because of it being highly used, there is neighborhood and street parking near building site, so no worries. Hidden gem? Food blessed by the divine! Haha had a rotation and was here for a week at the Lawndale Christian Health Center and every day I went to the cafe in the building for lunch and EVERY day the food was so good! Like, it has no business being this good I've eaten my way through the sandwich menu and would order all of them again in a heart beat, you just can't go wrong! And the chicken chili soup of the week? AMAZING, I had to buy several bowls to take home for my roommates to try. This neighborhood isn't typically known for having nice, cozy cafes, but the Green Tomato Cafe definitely serves the community well. I got off at the CTA Central Park Pink line station and was trying to locate where this place was. The surroundings were slightly bare, but not extremely shady during the day. Unfortunately, all the walkways leading toward the cafe weren't shoveled or plowed to a degree that pedestrians could comfortably walk on them. My arduous journey soon ended upon entering to this spacious, well-lit place. I placed my ordered at the counter and was surprised how extensive the menu was. I got a 16 oz. mocha and the chicken po'boy. I liked the atmosphere, but I loved the food more! The sandwich was exquisite. Whoever made this is so talented and deserves a big accolade from this happy customer. The homemade chips were one of the best chips I've ever consumed in my mouth! There's no exaggerating. That's just how delicious they were, without a doubt. The mocha was also spot-on. I know it's quite a travel down to the Lawndale neighborhood, but I will be coming for those chips most definitely. I didn't realize other than utilizing the CTA Central Park Pink line station, the CTA 82 (Kimball/Homan) bus is also accessible from Central Park and Ogden. The CTA 82 bus (northbound) goes through the north part of Little Village--Lawndale--Garfield Park--Humboldt Park--Logan Square--Avondale--Irving Park--Albany Park--North Park and terminates in Lincolnwood, a village that borders the city of Chicago. There's a very legible sign that says the kitchen closes at 4pm on the menu hovering above the counter, but I came up to the counter at 3:45pm to order and they told me that the kitchen had already closed. I was really disappointed because I had been there for a few hours (ordering snacks every now and then) but waited to order an actual meal because I thought they closed the kitchen at 4pm and it was closer to the time I usually eat dinner. I was planning to stay and work until the entire cafe closed around 5pm. I pointed out the sign and the woman working there didn't have anything to say. She just looked at me dumbfounded, like she had no idea that sign was there. I feel that if they are planning to close the kitchen earlier than is clearly stated, then management should remove the sign or change it. read more

The food is great, and the cafe is spacious and inviting. There's free WiFi AND a section near the front with small tables and toys for kids. If you want fresh, healthy options for breakfast and lunch, this is your place. I got the LV Ensalada 2x in two days because the salad dressing was soooo good. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 starts was because of the coffee - the latte was milk was steamed too much and tasted slightly burnt. The "ok" coffee is not enough to keep me away though! This place is pretty good. It's in the North Lawndale area of Chicago. The food is excellent and fresh. I had a chicken po boy sandwich with grilled chicken. It was good. I came with a group. There are a lot of places to sit, the location is fairly big. There is street parking and a rather large lot to park in. They have a full coffee bar, shakes, and a full healthy menu. This place seems to have a lot of regulars. The prices are reasonable. The ordering system was a little confusing and we didn't get much help from the employees on this one. This is my only issue. Otherwise, not a bad place to grab breakfast or lunch. I will most likely go back again. The coffee was pretty decent and my friends liked their lunches as well. Quick update: new favorites..... order the whole jerk chicken (must order with 24 hour advance notice). That is some tasty (BUT SPICY) chicken! I often order one and then pick it up and bring it home for dinner. My husband LOVES spicy food and really likes this chicken! He often reminds me to get one if I haven't picked one up in a while! I also love the veggie breakfast burrito, which can also be ordered with added chicken (if you want that added protein boost.) I have it both ways and it is delicious and filling! All food is made to order so expect about a 10 minute wait or so. The coffee is really good too. I judge my coffee by whether it tastes good drinking it straight black and they do a very good job brewing the coffee -has a great flavor and is not bitter! You can see I'm a big fan; I've tried a lot of dishes on the menu and I think they do an excellent job offering consistently tasty and inexpensive offerings. read more

I'd never break one of my bones for a sandwich, but Green Tomato Cafe might just be incentive enough for a sprain or something. It's located inside the Lawndale Christian Health Center so if you get some bad news about your blood work at least you can get a tasty lunch, some coffee, and free wifi on your way out. It's cheap, charming, cozy, and clean. Between the fireplace, couches, and dollar fifty drips you'll feel like you're in the comfort of your own home only with way better grub. Most of the menu items are relatively healthy and all for around only 5 bones. I initially didn't have very high expections for this cafe opening up on the first floor of a health center/fitness center, but from the moment I walked in, I was blown away. All the furniture is brand new, and the cafe itself has a very modern feel to it. There are two areas within the cafe - a quiet area with high chairs and seating looking out the window as well as couches and armchairs, meant for those who will be studying and doing work. Next to this is a louder area with the usual tables and chair, meant for those who are chatting and enjoying a good meal. The service was superb - the wait staff were friendly and very attentive. I ordered a BBQ pulled chicken sandwich which came with chips and a black-eye pea salad, and everything was fresh and tasty. The cappuccino was a little sub-par, but I expect them to get better at making espresso drinks with time. Green Tomato, where have you been all my life? LOL I love their salads and smoothies!!! Day 1: I had the Little Village Ensalada with their roasted chicken. It was so big that my husband and I was able to share it. Had the cup of chicken chili verde which was good to me but not to my husband. I also had the lean green smoothie which was good, not too sweet but could've been a little sweeter. Last but not least, the brownie!!!! ;-) oh so delicious!!! Day 2: Hubby went back per request for the same salad, the fruity smoothie (forgot the name), and another brownie today. The salad was missing the tortilla chips so I was kinda bummed out about it. I loved the fruity smoothie and of course the brownie was sooooo good! Really wanted to love this place but maybe came at the wrong time. Came for lunch on a Tue and tried the chipotle chk sandwich and the chopped chk salad. The sandwich was good but tasted like it sat around for a while. Which may explain why it took so long to get our order. The salad was good but nothing to write home about. The cilantro lime dressing was the most interesting thing about it. The atmosphere did look spacious and cozy and def good for young kids (they have a kids area). Patio seemed nice too but too cold to try. However, the tables where we sat were a bit disheveled and dirty. Overall the service seemed nice but lacking - the service at the register seems a bit overwhelmed and distracted despite the few customers in line. As I mentioned before, the order took around 10 min to come out and the sandwich seemed cold and a bit stale. Would def try again giving the story they tell and support for the community. I deliver packages to the clinic so I stopped in the cafe one day. Btw, the whole building is new with a clinic, gym, and cafe. Great local spot to hang out. The first time I went, I got the minestrone soup with tea. The minestrone is better than most restaurants I've been to. I like that you can pick your tea and add whatever you want at the end counter. Also, had a homemade brownie one time which was delicious. The girls are always friendly. I haven't actually stayed to eat there since I'm on the job, but it looks like a great place to hang out and chill. Very nice ambiance, reasonable prices, clean, and healthy eating options. I had never had yelp before and really never needed it. But i downloaded this app just so i can leave a review on this cafe. I had 45 min for lunch. When I went in no one was waiting. I walked right up to counter looked at menu for 3 min and then waited for another 4 min while people behind the counter walked past me. And right before the cashier (Rose) took my order the manager stopped her to whisper something flirtatious about the gentleman behind me. She then took my order. A BLT and a bottled water. I then sat down with my number and waited 17 min before i got up and mentioned I was waiting on a BLT. Rose went back and checked and said a few more min. So I asked her if she could make it to go. Although it is a cafe, it has a pretty large space and is a great place to lounge, study, or even hold a small informal meeting. The food is reasonably priced and taste so good. What's not to love about GTC? Well, for me, it's the distance from my home in Logan Square... but if you live in the southwest side, there's no reason why this place shouldn't be your go-to cafe. First, this place is GREAT for groups. It's huge, yet cozy, with a lounge area, an area with a dozen or so tables of two, and even a long family-style table that would be perfect for study groups. Nice patio outside for sunny days. I like to decor too: clean and breezy, modern, and a bit industrial. I haven't tried the coffee yet, but I was very impressed with my BBQ sandwich. It looked a little different because the sauce is green tomato-based, but it was so, SO good! This place is also Christian-friendly, which means you can do your praisin', prayin', and hallelujah-in' here without (too many) weird looks. read more
