Honestly, if you lived in New York or Los Angeles this place would be your average corner Chinese take-out, but with less vegetable choices (garlic spinach is missing, for instance). Having sampled several other St. Augustine Chinese restaurants, though, I can see why it gets such good reviews. On our most recent to-go order, we bought bone-in spareribs, moo shu pork, roast pork lo mein, and hot and sour soup. We also asked for extra hot mustard, chili oil, and soy sauce, not once but several times (including while I was in the restaurant waiting for the package to be sealed, and after I received the package.) I will say that Green Tea provides more meat in its dishes than most. The moo shu, for instance, had an incredible amount of pork. The spareribs aren't the cheap cuts you normally get; they're very thick, meaty, and delicious; the sauce that comes on them is a pretty nice, not-too-sweet glaze. The moo shu was drowning in brown sauce, but once I drained it, was pretty good - however, the pancakes are so thin that they fall apart immediately once they're even lightly filled. And for the first time in my life, this dish was actually better cold, the next day, than it was fresh-cooked. The hot and sour soup is a huge disappointment. Unfathomably, it's filled with carrots and celery. And there aren't any Chinese mushrooms in it, though there were 8-10 medium-sized whole crimini-style mushrooms in it. The lack of authentic ingredients has been annoying, and there's more corn starch every time. I don't recommend it, though the flavor was decent. The pork lo mein was spicy, as we'd asked, and about average, though the noodles were pretty pasty and over-cooked. Still, decent enough. The biggest irritant was about the condiments. As noted, we'd asked several times for extra hot mustard and chili oil and soy sauce. Even standing there holding the package, looking at the person who'd packed it, I was told "Yes, a lot of hot mustard - you want home made, right?" I nodded vociferously and was told there was plenty. When we got home, we had one tiny plastic container of hot mustard (the "homemade" mixture of Colman's English with water), one tiny container of chili oil, one tiny container of hoisin for the moo shu, and zero soy sauce, Fortunately, while I was waiting I'd grabbed some packets of mustard from the counter, along with a few soy sauce. The mustard packages , by W. Y. Industries, are really awful; I can't begin to tell you how bad they were. So, after many attempts, next time we'll buy a can of Colman's and make our own mustard. We'll stay away from the soup unless we want hot soup with corn starch that bears no resemblance to Chinese hot & sour. And we'll enjoy the meal for what it is - your average corner Chinese restaurant, but without the garlic spinach! read more

Orange chicken & General Taos chicken, both with pork fried rice & an egg roll. Each entree was $7.79 so total was around $17 with tax. They have dinner specials for $6.39 but they only come with white rice, no egg roll and no fried rice. If you want fried rice, it's $1 more. No option of brown rice. They almost forgot sweet & sour sauce for our egg rolls - we were asked if we wanted some while walking out with our to go order. They didn't include utensils or even napkins. Who the heck doesn't include utensils? Had to hunt some down at the hotel where we are staying. Portions were large, but not much bigger than Panda Express and certainly not as good as Panda unfortunately. Orange chicken has no orange flavor, tasted like sugar goo. General Taos has no heat to it at all and again, tasted like sugar goo The only good part of the meal were the egg rolls which were delicious. People were very nice and food came out quickly. Tried this place for take out on our last night in town. The set up is pretty standard Chinese take-out joint with a counter, picture menu above it and an open floor area with four tables. The message is this is a place for take-out, but if you want to sit, we won't stop you. As with the food, this is pretty standard Chinese fare. Lo Mein with different types of proteins. Pot stickers, either fried and steamed in meat or veggie form. General Tso's Chicken, which is just a spicier version of Orange Chicken. You're given an option of brown or white rice and Sweet and Sour Soup. Flavor wise everything is on point. It tasted like it's supposed to taste with portions expected in size. I think if you're looking for something that's a little above Panda Express, this is a good option for you, but if you want more authentic Chinese offerings stick with Panda Express. We ordered the Singapore noodles (mai fun) for dinner to go We also ordered egg rolls. Let me say that the Singapore my fun was outrageously good and talk about enough food - - one serving is enough to feed three people fully! Imagine what we had for leftovers when we made two separate orders for two people. We will be eating this for breakfast and lunch again tomorrow. The Singapore mai fun is curry spicy-- loaded with chicken, pork, egg and at least 6 perfectly prepared shrimp. There is also onions and carrot shaving and maybe cabbage sautéed in this dish. In short - if this is an indication of why the receive such high ratings- there's no argument from us. Alas, I'd skip the egg roll. For me it was last me a very other Chinese egg roll-- over cooked vegs in a beautifully fried wrapper. Quite honestly, I haven't had an exceptional egg roll in at least 4 decades (no lie) so I wouldn't hold this against Green Tea. Better you sample all their home made dishes because they are sooo with while. This restaurant is best suited to carry out rather than eat in. There are tables but they are used for waiting rather than eating. Service is very friendly with smiles for everyone at the same time the cooking is taking place. I don't hate this place, but I'm not going to go out of my way for it either. I've been here maybe once or twice before (both times for carryout) prior this review, but I don't recall anything "special" about it that would make me think about this place right away--except for convenience when I'm out doing errands on the south side of town. Don't get me wrong--there is nothing I have found that was wrong with the food. On my scale, it's pretty "average" for typical Chinese carryout food. But read on. You might get a chuckle. On the particular night I was here (again for carryout), I was actually a little scared (and turned off) by the lady who appeared to be the owner/operator of this place. Basically, I walked in while she was still on the phone with a customer and was trying to take the order. She was speaking to the customer quite loudly and harshly, and clearly annoyed. I walked in mid-conversation, so not knowing what had transpired prior to my arrival, I could only conclude that there may have been some language and/or communication issues here, because the woman just kept repeating herself, getting louder and louder, talking faster and faster. The situation escalated to the point where a younger gal (maybe the daughter??) who was seated in the dining room--stopped eating, very deliberately pushed herself away from her table, got up, walked behind the counter, took the phone from the older lady, and completed the call. The first lady was still going on in her native language, even though she was no longer on the phone--but she was livid! Fortunately for me, by the time I got to the counter, the younger gal remained, and she pleasantly and politely took my order. (WHEW!!! That saved a star!) But then for the foursome behind me, the same older woman took their order and gave the one gentleman grief about ordering too many crab rangoon! Perhaps they all knew each other and already had a rapport with the woman, because the woman did eventually crack a smile and did some back-pedaling when one of the members of the group called her out, by saying (a bit defensively), "Don't give us a hard time, just give us what we ask for!" I honestly didn't know how to perceive all that! I was so confused--and still shaking in my seat! I'm not going to complain about the food; it's really not bad. Overall this isn't a bad place, because the service I've had in the past was fine. But boy! Today's visit scared the bejeezus out of me! read more

I stopped here to get take out after work. A friend recommended Green Tea after I had a negative experience at other Chinese places in town. I had the Magnolia Beef and the Orange Chicken. It is a family owned business with great customer service. They answered all of my questions and made the Orange Chicken extra spicy. While I waited I was intrigued by the interactions between the regulars and the staff. Everyone seemed to be very pleased and left with a smile. I have eaten in and take out in well over 100 "Chinese" places over the last 50 years. This is awful. The egg rolls and dumplings come from the big box stores frozen sections. Their main menu items are also NOT restaurant made. All of the food is previously frozen, overwhelmed with salt and basically terrible. Your typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese place BUT the food and service quality was amazing. My order: bourbon chicken, steamed veggies, plain lo mein. The veggies were super fresh, not frozen, and not over cooked. Bourbon chicken had the perfect ratio of sauce and cooked to a little crispy. The lo mein was actually added on last minute after a miscommunication, but the best part was that they were super friendly about it and didn't even charge me extra for the mix up. Excellent food, both the Chicken Fried Rice and the General's So's chicken are out of this world. Just remember to order it with the degree of spicy, you want. Best Chinese in st Augustine. If you're looking for a quick stop type of place and in the mood for Chinese American styled cuisine this is the place to go. I had their general tso chicken and fried rice special. The chicken was cooked just right. It had a nice little crunch to it, yet the inside was still moist. I ate here today,the Forth Of July,and enjoyed my visit. I had the General Tso's Chicken which was sweet and sour at the same time.
