This is a review for the 2D bike-fitting service done by Clovis Anderson, top-ten veteran of the 1988 Seoul Olympics Brazilian cycling team and certified sports medicine specialist. I recently brought in my daughter's road bike to see if it could be adapted to me, 68 yrs old, trying to get back in the game so I could ride with my husband, who just retired and has been doing 20-40-mile distance rides on his own for years. Clovis has every piece of equipment to measure and explain the proper fit for every aspect of bike efficiency/rider comfort and was able to show me that even with stem risers and other adjustments my daughter's bike would never work for me. He then showed us a half-price electric-assist bike, which turned out to be what I needed to keep up with my husband. He then offered a female-friendly saddle, and an ergonomic handle bar and grips suited to my scoliosis and arthritic hands. In short, he took all of my "special needs" into consideration and gave me just the special fit I needed. I can't say enough about about the care, personal attention and specialized technical knowledge that Clovis brought to my fitting that has resulted in a bike that makes it a true pleasure for me to ride, after ten years, with my husband. I visited Green Lizard Cycling one Sunday to come in and try and find some cycling shoes that fit my ridiculously wide feet and that work with a Peloton bike. Several of my friends had recommended, nay, raved about Green Lizard Cycling. I called ahead - they advised they do carry such shoes - and that I should come in and get measured and try some shoes on. I asked if staff would all be wearing facemasks - I was advised that yes they would be. When I arrived - I walked in and found the appropriate staff to work with. The gentleman I worked with measured my feet, and had me try on a couple of existing shoes. Ultimately, they did not have my size, but have ordered a pair in my size for me to try on. Unfortunately, the shoes will not arrive until some time in October. I was disappointed to find that - a number of the staff was not wearing facemasks (I was). The person who helped me started off with a mask on, but was not wearing it during the measuring my feet part of the visit - and a couple of the other guys working in the back - also were not wearing facemasks - which made me a bit uncomfortable. Great help getting 2 bikes ready for a 140.6 triathlon - Sam was helpful and a problem solver. Liked the ready availability of Garmin cleats, Lazer helmets. Plus he could adjust seat levels, put on new tires, attach tool pouches, repack front and rear wheel hub bearings. Labor charges were extremely reasonable and part prices not jacked up ($69 helmet, $3.50 CO2 cartridges, $25 for Garmin cleats). Borrowing 2 VA bikes from my brother. Also liked the tea and coffee options. Got a London Fog after discussing options with Erin. Also got some nice muffins. Thankfully, bike service was done with a smile as we waited. Sorry to say borrowed bikes can be tricky. Sam is good at spotting issues and fixing what might matter. read more

It was really very good. But it was sooo little. I felt like I was in a Vietnamese place with tiny, Vietnamese style portions. I could have drunk my large iced coffee in two long draws. I had their light roast black coffee (~$2.50)and it was delightful. The has indoor and outdoor seating and a service center in the back in case something happens on the trail. They also serve pretty good cold brew and tea and a good spot. Very chill environment, I would definitely recommend for a nice break from biking. read more

I really want to like this place. Best hours of the bike shops around. However, I took my bikes in for tuneups and when I got it back I complained that the braking was spongy. They said all their disc brakes are like this. I went home, figured out online what I needed, bought new pads and a hydraulic fluid bleed kit. Inspecting the pads showed wear to the metal. I found air bubbles in the fluid causing the sponginess. I had to fix this all myself because they were gaslighting me into thinking it was all in my head. Sorry, this is terrible service. read more

Always love to support local-especially a bike shop that has a good thing going in the community. I want to give these guys 5 stars, because certain aspects of their service are awesome. However, I was looking to do a major groupset upgrade to one of our bikes, which they were very fast to respond to with a quote. I emailed back and forth numerous times with a mechanic at the shop, then heard nothing back. Followed up with a few emails, a separate email to the owner, and a call, but got radio silence back. Best bike shop experience. I'm high risk for COVID and have gotten into cycling during all my time home in 2020. I wanted to buy a road bike-- it's become my outlet, but I wasn't sure how I'd shop since I'm high risk. Dave and the team went above and beyond to make it safe and possible for me to go bike shopping. They allowed me to come after hours (several times) and would bring bikes I considered purchasing outside to take for a spin. Clovis even did my bike fit outside on a trainer so I could be sure I was buying a bike that fit me perfectly. I cannot say enough about Green Lizard Cycling. I think it is my ethical duty to point out when I believe a business is not behaving in the public interest, and in my informed opinion, Green Lizard is not doing that at the moment. While they have a sign on their door indicating that they are adhering to Northam's weak/unenforced "10 person maximum" for the inside of the building, they have been allowing congregations of people outside, all of whom are within two to three feet of each other for prolonged periods of time. Even if the owners don't believe the Covid-19 pandemic is serious, the bad optics on this are breathtaking. I believe you are a bad public citizen right now, and your right to have customers drink mochas in front of your store does not outweigh your public obligations at this dire moment. Since I can attach photos here, I just want the general public to see how irresponsibly this company is conducting itself right now in the middle of a global pandemic in which a large fraction of Americans are on lockdown and where scientists and public health experts are urging six feet of space. I have Yelped these good folks before and will again after another good interaction - this is really a great bike shop. They sell a lot of high end bikes but really just want to get people rolling and having fun. So you don't get the elitism you can at some shops. The cafe is a fun scene, good food, and plenty of riders in and out, especially on weekends. There is also a bodega a few doors up with great pastries. The guy who fits bikes, Clovis, is really good and will get your bike exactly dialed in. And the techs are great, helpful, explain stuff, and they stand behind their work. We rented bikes here to do a bike ride on W&OD trail. First of all they are just super nice and welcoming there. Maybe it's standard but I was super impressed that they assisted my friends to be fitted on the bike properly and even directed us to some cool sites on our bike ride. If you're going to charge an arm and a leg for a simple repair, let your customer know IN ADVANCE. So wrong to take advantage of a woman by herself, never riding a motorized bike before. They don't tell you cost in advance. $45 later for a repair that could have been done easily if I had the parts. Also, don't buy into," they're doing the best they can during Covid". It's not an excuse to take advantage of people, and you guys know it was wrong. Even car repairs they give the price before doing the work. Terrible business practice. read more

Well years later, Ive "matured", and keep my enthusiasm under control. But alas, this place brings out that giddy enthusiasm again. I would say that its a bike shops modeled after "Cheers". I would not recommend this store, very poor customer service and work! We brought in our bob stroller tire to get a new inner tube and within one day of not even using it it blew both the inner and outer tires. I took it back asking for a refund on the work and they refused saying they could not guarantee it was their problem. It is confusing and disappointing and now we are out the cost of the initial repair and the cost to fix both, and 30 minutes of gas money. We will never return. read more

I go to a couple of bike shops in this area, depending on how close I happen to be / what direction I'm going and whether it's a service visit or just coming off the trail for a refreshing pause and to browse the store. Both are excellent and deserve their customer base. Nonetheless, Green Lizard stands out in my mind because of their outstanding customer service and willingness to help fellow cyclists in a pinch. Once I stopped by there with a quick question, and they adjusted a component on the spot and got me back on the trail immediately. I bought a couple of items in passing, but they didn't even charge for the quick adjustment. Recently, I had a similar case in which they adjusted a safety concern literally while I enjoyed a green tea in their cafe', and again they did so entirely as a courtesy. Other service visits and tune-ups have been very reasonably priced and expeditiously done. They are no nonsense but kind and professional, and I am a very average customer, not the one who typically buys their more high-end gear. So I can only assume and observe that this must be how they treat all their customers, out of love for the sport and a calling to run the best shop with the best customer service they can offer. It's just the way they do business. They do have an amazing selection of equipment, from the basics to very specialized, and the cafe' or curbside is a welcome place to rest for a bit. I recently purchased a Scott road bike from the Green Lizard and I couldn't be happier. I almost purchased the bike online but instead decided to give my business to a local shop. As soon as I walked through the door I was treated like a king. Dak was very professional and knowledgeable. The bike I wanted was in stock and he advised me on what I needed to complete the ride. Fortunately, I was able to take delivery just two hours after the sale. While I was getting fitted, another employee saw that the stem tube needed to be shortened. It was immediately replaced even though the mechanics were very busy. The whole experience from beginning to end was very pleasant. I recommend that if you are in the market for a new bicycle, give the Green Lizard a look. I could not be happier. read more

As a bicycle shop they seem pretty good. Don't know anything about the coffee. I went there to get a bike rehabbed. End up buying a new one because the old one was needing so much stuff done it was an almost even exchange. I don't think they were trying to up-sell me, either. Honestly, the old bike was a Wal-Mart special, probably almost a decade old and had spent most of its life outside. The cables and components were rusted, the sprockets seemingly chipped, and it was generally a mess. The guy assisting me gave me known costs for repairs, then costs for things that might be add-on after the initial repairs were done (uncover the next layer of the onion, so to speak). I was the one who asked if the estimate was getting close to the price of a modest new bike, and he confirmed it was. Since we now have some space to store the bikes indoors, I went ahead and just bought a new bike. Service was good, gave me lots of information to make an informed decision, and I will be back in the future for accessories. read more

I do not recommend this shop to any new riders customers. They are for high end riders. They do not do well for regular bike riders. They upsell you on bikes out do not need, and overcharge on all products. I am very disatisfied customer who used to trust their services. I was up sold on bike I didn't need and ended being defect on electronic gears. Service messed up my tuneups on occasion. Owner did not give me refund on defect bike. And not treated well by owner as a customer. I left and went to another reliable shop at spokes. Spokes is trustworthy shop. Not lizard. read more

Review for the cycling part of the shop only: I brought in bikes to do a simple seat swap because I was struggling to get the seat off myself. The repair guy, who was not wearing his face mask over his mouth, acted put off that I asked him to do it when I told him I was having trouble unscrewing it, as if I was wasting his time. He loosened it and then started walking away but when I asked him to go ahead and swap the seats he told me then he was going to charge me $10. I told him to proceed. After helping another customer he did the swap which took him all of 3 minutes and he indeed charged me for it! I also was having trouble with the chain hitting the derailleur but decided against asking for help with anything else there. I would rather go somewhere else for bike repair. I really didn't appreciate the icy reception. read more

Great staff, good selection of bikes, supplements, tools and accessories, and even great coffee! I came here on a Wednesday morning right as they were opening at 7am. My bike was stolen 4 months ago and I had not gotten a replacement since then and had seen online that green lizard cycling was right next to my neighborhood and offered bike rentals. I walked into the shop and was greeted by the friendly owner Dave. He was very knowledgeable about bikes and cycling and was very helpful. I ended up renting a very nice road bike at a rate of $42 for 4 hours. If I remember correctly there would have been a $12 charge for any hour that had exceeded the 4 hours. What I really liked about this place was that it is located conveniently next to the W&OD trail. I also ended up ordering an iced almond latte with soy milk before my long bike ride, and it was surprisingly very delicious! This shop is so great because not only do they sell and service bikes, but they also rent out bikes and serve coffee and pastries for the early birds out there. They also serve sandwiches as well, but only on the weekend. I would definitely recommend this shop to all of my friends and bike enthusiasts. read more

Review for coffee bar experience (can't speak to the bike-specific aspect of the shop, but it seems awesome): I can't believe it took me as long as it did to try out Green Lizard and bring them into my routine of weekend coffee, especially when: I have lived in Herndon for over 3 years, I live walking distance from the shop, and I love local coffee shops and have struggled to find that amenity in the Herndon/Reston area. HELLO, EARTH to MEGAN, Green Lizard Cycling & Coffee is the answer to your local/delicious/inexpensive/convenient coffee (and pastry) prayers. Oh, and did I mention how charming the shop itself is and how friendly the lady barista working weekends (and I assume the rest of the staff) is/are? The shop is located inside a historic building in adorable Downtown Herndon, with ample parking lot/street parking that is also free on the weekends. The store is a cool amalgam of cyclist's paradise, and located within a pebble's toss of the W&OD trail, so you can show up for coffee in your Sunday Worst (whether that's PJs, gym gear, cycle uniform, whatever), and no one will give you a second glance. The coffee drinks themselves are reliable, delicious, and inexpensive. I can get a soy latte, or an iced coffee, or a brewed coffee, or even a smoothie, for at least a dollar less than what I'd pay at 'Bucks for a comparable item, and I'm supporting a cool Mom-and-Pop shop. Plus, Green Lizard supports local businesses themselves by offering baked goods for sale from local Herndon establishments such as the delicious Bake Shop. You'll find a full complement of coffee and tea beverages, plus smoothies, baked goods, and packaged/to-go protein bar-type items which cater great to the fitness crowd.
