Again A1 Herndon (now Al's bike shop) has done it again! I had issues with my brakes, didn't have the materials and parts to do it at home, so I brought it a different local shop. They didn't do a great job and actually caused me to have to warranty a part. They were not of any help, but Al's came through as usual! My new part and fix was all done in 4-5 days. With the summer months shops get busy as more people ride, so I'm glad they were able to help me out at a very reasonable price! So I've called several bike shops today as I just moved into the area, I have a Specialized Venge that was packed for shipping and needed someone to place the handlebars on and the wheels and ensure the shifting and brakes are good. This is an easy thing to do at home if my tools were not overseas. Anyways after wasting my time at the Others Guys shall we say I called A-1 Cycling and got ahold of Jake and explained what I had going on. Jake told me to common in as long as it was as straight forward as I was saying should not be a problem. However if there were any issues he could not fix it until Wednesday as he is booked up thanks to the global pandemic. Best part was they were almost a hundred dollars cheaper than the Other Guy (I think they were trying to rip me off! The Other Guy also made it clear he did not like Specialized or at least the Venge.) Jake and the guys at A-1 thank you for doing me a solid and getting my bike in and done same day. Easily a 5 star experience. A recent experience confirms what I had heard from many knowledgable bike riders....go there for exceptional service of your bike. I needed a tune up, thought my handle bars needed to be set straight and my rear wheel was out of round. Called early on a Tuesday afternoon, talked to Kevin on the phone. He said bring it in, we'll take a look at it, make some recommendations and give you a free estimate. Got there around 430p, they are in the shopping center by the big clock tower. Golds Gym on one side and Ned Devine's the other. Kevin walked my Jamis Ventura Comp back to the bench and made a quick assessment. He quoted me a price and said we can get this done in a half hour. It was more like 25 minutes but he fixed me up and saved me some money. I'm no Lance Armstrong and rely on the professional expertise from someone at a shop like this. It was an exceptional experience. Now I know why they are highly recommended as the best bike shop in NoVa for service. Ask for Kevin, it will make a difference. read more

Once while riding Lake Fairfax and my derailleur was skipping (by chance encountered a couple of their mechanics on the trail and offered to help me); the other time was recently I bent my front rotor and almost couldn't do my ride. I went to investigate a bike I been researching for 2 months. I new I wanted a Giant bike. I knew that they were a big dealer on Giant so I decided to go here first. The salesperson (Geoff) was not pushy, but very knowledgeable. He was determined that I test ride 3 bikes. This helped me make my decision. They have Specialized bikes also which was great. One note if you don't see the bike you like ask for other bikes the have in the back. The prices seemed to be reasonable in comparison for online, wish I could of compare to Spokes, but had sense it was within the same price. I had to give five star as the Salesman (Geoff) spent 2 hours with me find my first bike, second if you count my $69, 10-speed in my teenage years, Lool. read more

Edit to original review: Just got a phone call from the service manager, Matt, about my previous review. Matt apologized, admitted fault, and offered to make things right. Now, see, that's great customer service. That's something that will completely change a customer's mind and bring back business as well as have me recommend A-1 Cycling for future customers. Complete turnaround. Highly recommend and will be coming back. Changed my 2-star review to a 5-star. Original Review: I called in on Monday, 10/06/14, to have a new headset installed on my bike. The person that took my bike in was pretty helpful and said my bike would be done on Wednesday, 10/08/14, and that I would get a call once it was finished. I called in yesterday to request that they change the current silver steerer tube spacers to black and to check/adjust the chain line. I was told that they had the spacers in stock and everything would be done by Wednesday. Fast forward to Wednesday, I called in to the store around 6PM wondering if the bike was finished. After talking for a bit, he stated that they didn't have spacers and it would be about 3-4 more days. I'm thinking why didn't I get a call about this earlier? The bike was all finished and I didn't get a call. He then placed me on hold to talk to his superior. All the while, the phone was just unhooked and not on mute so I could hear everything they said. I may just be a bit forward, but they may or may not have been talking like I was stupid. At least that's what it sounded like. I get to the store and they give me my bike. The headset and everything look and feel great. However, I notice a new nick on the seat tube and the bike is dirty and covered in grease smudges. Fork, top tube, seat tube, everywhere. I mean It's not that big of a deal, but it would have been nice to just have the bike wiped down. As for the nick, it's whatever. S*** happens. I just wish they would have taken better care of the bike. Best thing about this place is that their repairs are cheap. You may get what you pay for but don't expect them to take top notch care for your bike. If good enough is good for you, then this is the place to be! Seriously though, to replace the headset on my bike cost me $28, where as other places quoted me $50+ so I can't complain too much. I don't mind the grease, but I just wish they didn't scratch my bike. read more

I called the Lake Ridge store yesterday and asked if they put training wheels on kids bikes. I had tried doing it myself but I was not strong enough to turn the nuts/bolts. I was told that they do and I might be able to have it done in a few minutes or have to drop it off. No worries. I didn't mind dropping it off. When I drove down from Springfield today, Sunday 4 July, the guy working was less than happy to see me wheel in a kids bike and promptly told me that "you can't install training wheels on this bike because the nut is too thick. Huffy's can't really have training wheels put on them." Then he just kinda said there was nothing I could do and clearly wanted me to just leave. I not being a bike specialist took him at his word. But I got to thinking...Huffy has been around forever and I had training wheels on mine and so do all the kids in my neighborhood now and yes they are on Huffy's. When we got home I reviewed my son's bike manual and there is a page showing how to install training wheels and the size to use for the bike. I get that installing training wheels isn't as big a job as servicing a professional bike riders fancy bike might be but just tell me that! This guy clearly didn't want to be bothered with doing it. I also think that because it was 4 July and the store was closing in two hours he just didn't want to do it. There was another guy in the parking lot that appeared to work there but he was too busy affixing a flag to his pickup for the holiday. The guy in the store actually said "well you should just buy a bike with the training wheels already on it." HUH! Sad thing is that I work in health and wellness for a very large government agency and often recommend companies to our workforce to promote a healthy work-life balance. I will be sure NOT to recommend these folks for any fitness needs! So for anyone who does care to provide the service, let me know as I still need the training wheels put on and I will also tip...guy missed out on that $20 tip plus I was going to buy a helmet, bell, all sorts of add ons for my son and a bike for myself and husband so we could ride with him! I received great service! I took my jogging stroller in because the tires were flat. I assumed I needed new tires but the young man first tried to put air in the tires and sure enough that's all it needed. I'm really thankful he didn't try and sell me something I didn't need. Don't be dismissive of the youngsters working there; you'll be surprised at how knowledgable they are! Colin is the consummate pro -- his wheel building skills are second to none. Just had him lace up some NOX Falkors to a set of Project 321s for my gravel bike, and they look absolutely sick! I just beat on them this afternoon, and both rims are perfectly true. A1 customer for life! I've had a hiccup or two in the 15 years I've been shopping there. We've now bought three kids' bikes at A-1 and it's been a great experience every time. We had bought one bike from Target, got it home, and found it was missing parts and other parts were broken. Called A-1 in a panic the next day (birthday party coming up!) and bought a much better bike for less money. They offer free tune-ups on all bikes they sell and have a huge inventory of bikes and accessories on hand to fulfill any need. Their customer service is excellent. I needed a particular bike and Chris, the assistant, offered to pick it up from their Manassas store on his way to work in Herndon the next day! Fantastic. read more

I stopped into the store in October 2012 on a whim with my family after eating in the attached shopping center, and had a rude customer service experience. One of the sales staff told my son (age 4) several times to "be careful" and "don't break" one of the mountain bikes in the shop, which was attached to a mount in the middle of the store. Not only had my kid done nothing but look at it and gently put his hand on the bike, but the thing was freaking attached- he couldn't have broken the bike if he'd wanted to. What did the guy think, that my 4 year old was going to rip the bike off the mount and smash it on the floor? When the sales guy made another comment about how "if you break it, you buy it", I told him no, that's not true, and we walked out. We'll shop elsewhere. read more

I have never bought a bike here, but have bought many parts here and always bring my bikes here for service. I have always been very pleased with the service and overall experience. The staff has been very knowledgeable and helpful. I wouldn't recommend going at lunch time as they are always very busy, but any other time the staff will take time to talk to you and recommend what is best. Agreed, the prices aren't the best, and sometimes the service is inattentive. But I would say that about all bike shops. Once you get their attention, its undivided and very helpful. Bought my first bike from here. It was a great deal, and they walked me through the entire selection process and didn't pressure a purchase. In fact, they suggested I come back a few months later to wait for the price drop. I did, and it saved me $200! I would suggest if you're looking to buy your first bike, look no further, very helpful and informative. Looking out for the customer indeed. If you're looking for parts, I would suggest getting it online (30 for a derailleur hanger?). Their service agreement is nice too if you buy a bike (free adjustments for life). read more

The team at A1 is fantastic. they are knowledgable, friendly and operate with high integrity. I recently had my bike serviced and after picking it up I had a mechanical malfunction. One call to Rob the service manager, and he made everything right. He went above and Beyond in replacing the broken part. He did a full inspection, tune up and replaced some things that I didn't even know needed attention. All on the house. Although I didn't expect this, it felt fantastic knowing that he and the A1 team cared about me and my safety. This type of service is rare unfortunately. Customer service and appreciation are the most important things to me in a service provider. I will go out of my way and pay more when needed to ensure I get it!!!
