I have a 20-year-old bike that I haven't ridden in a while. When I turned 40, I rode this bike 40 miles to celebrate my number of years alive and continued that until I was 47. With my 56th birthday approaching, I wanted to bring that tradition back. However, my bike was not in good shape. The repair shop went above and beyond to clean my bike, replace broken parts, and restore it to its former glory. Yesterday, I rode 56 miles from Vienna to Purcellville and back. I bought a Trek mountain bike and a road bike here in November 2020 for my two teenage sons (16 yrs, 14 yrs) when it was Spokes, Inc. This is an updated review after Trek acquired Spokes in early 2022 and changed the name to Trek permanently as of April 2022. The selection of bikes here is great (if you are looking for a Trek model of course). Back in 2020, the staff did not try to pressure me into buying a particular brand. I really appreciated that after visiting another bike store that was trying to do a hard sell. Also, I was grateful when Spokes Inc. called a neighboring store to find a mountain bike that my 16 year old liked. It was ready in a week or so. Fast forwarding to May 2022, I returned to do a Level 2 tune-up for each bike. It's a bit pricey at $189, but the service charge seemed reasonable given how much wear and tear my sons have put on both bikes (e.g., inner tube and tires needed replacement). One thing that I like about this store is that Trek seemed to retain most of the service employees in the back when it was called Spokes. That's a positive sign that Trek wants to retain loyal customers, and has a clear business model and strategy (i.e., post-pandemic demand for bikes will decrease, but demand for service work will increase). Bottom line - if you're looking for a new bike or need service work, be sure to take a look at the Trek Bicycle Store as one of your options. read more

I went to several bike shops before stopping in here. I hadn't ridden a bicycle in quite a few years but was excited to get back into it. I'd been looking at various Giant models and had a lot of questions. Shop after shop I went. Vague answers and limited technical knowledge sent me from one to the next. I'd finally settled on a Roam before stopping in to Vienna Spokes. I ran into a polite, kind, and knowledge salesperson named Evelyn. She answered all the technical questions I had about different levels within Giant's lineup and specific questions about hybrid bikes I'd been checking out. She helped me order a Giant Roam 3 and called exactly when she said she would to let me know it was ready. When I arrived she explained there was a mistake made in assembly and a mounting point for the seat rack had been cross threaded. She said it shouldn't be a problem if I left the rack on the bike. I stated that I wouldn't be happy with that situation and she was understanding of my point. She got a supervisor/manager there to explain options on waiting for another bike, ordering a different one, and other ideas I wasn't into. She ordered me another bike and let me know once that was assembled. I'm a happy Giant owner now! I wasn't happy about the mistake but I was very appreciative of her honesty, integrity,and diligence in resolving the problem. She absolutely could have let me leave with the first bike and I'd never have known until I tried to remove the rack. I still paid for the installation which I wasn't happy about but overall it was a good buying experience. Great salesperson and I'm very happy with my bicycle. Yelp needs to introduce a zero star for trek bikes in Vienna. What a sloppy bunch of "sales" reps. They are simply not interested in talking to customers. I mean at least try not to be rude to customers? Even when we had a selected a bike without any interest or help from staff...all we got a "HOLD ON A SEC...WE'RE BUSY"....umm, no they were not. We were only one of three customers in there. I think this place needs to bike the heck outta here...useless waste of space in what is a very nice neighborhood. The staff saw us walk out and they seemed quite ok with it. We ended up at Conte's bike shop instead...wow!! Completely different experience and it was well staffed and quickly answered every question. We dropped a few thousand...much better place! Period! read more

Thankfully no flat on the Spokes Saturday group ride, which was a treat, but could have been an issue. Sorry to say prices routinely charged by Amazon are not as reasonable as what Spokes charged. Had a great time at this shop. Biking is still quite new to me and something I was keen on picking up as a hobby for this upcoming summer. Danny was super helpful with all my questions. After falling during the test run, Danny and the staff were more than accommodating. He also showed me how to properly "start" and "stop" on a bike, which were areas I struggled with. Despite the wait and staffing issues, the team at this job did their best to help and answer all my questions. I did not mind the lulls in between since they checked in every once in a while with updates and to help with other customers. Shout out to Brian for the stickers and certificate when I picked up my bike sometime later. The main reason for trying them for bike service is living nearby and they ended up being great! been to this location twice so far for issues with my triathlon bike on weekday evenings between 5:30pm and 7pm dropping by after work. They've accommodated me well then. First time I had some alignment issue with my front wheel causing noises. That was a quick fix and no extra charge. Second time my derailleur was removed and placed back due to shifting gear issues which was resolved afterwards. And I just raced a triathlon and won my age group - first time on this relatively new bike was great thanks to them. Jesse and Theo were the guys who helped me. read more

This bicycle repair store shop is total rip off. They Charge me $40.0o to just NOT replace a chain. I did ask on pick up can you oil the chain and shift from desk 22 y old stated. We have to charge extra. For years I did used store in Lee Hwy, Cherrydale, Arlington and was perfect and I was dealing with a real bike technik not like in this place. Never again. read more

I asked about seeing 3 bikes for my kids & this is what they said: I wish we had the time for you to come in and look at all of those bikes. For now we are requesting customers come in when ready to make a purchase. With that said our weekend days are very busy, typically with a line out front. We need to limit the amount of customers in our store and in all fairness we need to move our customers along once in the store. If you wish to come over, please be patient with us, we are all in this together. I know it's stressful. Poor customer service. Please read my review of Bikes at Vienna for comparison. Decided to fix up my 10 speed after snapping off the rear derailleur recently. I bought some parts online for a tune-up and a new derailleur, but quickly realized that my older bike isn't exactly easy to figure out. Was able to fix the rear derailleur without issue. But then I realized I needed to replace my front derailleur as well. After a bad experience with Bikes at Vienna, I tried my luck with Spokes etc. First, I called to ask how simple our it would be to walk in and buy one. They too mentioned that this is much easier when they can see the bike, but were willing to try with just a picture of the front and rear setups if I couldn't bring it in. I ended up being able to fit it in my car and brought it to the service area. Jesse was extremely helpful despite the fact that they didn't have what I needed. He found the right parts for me online and made sure I was all set. Both over the phone and in person they had excellent customer service. This was also during COVID. They were cleaning bikes outside the shop before bringing them in. They were limiting the number of customers in the shop, which created a long line on a Sunday afternoon, but well worth the wait. As a professional who takes care of novice customers who rarely understand how little they know about my field, this IS a wonderful example of how you treat people. I highly recommend them. The problem here, with most bike shops is that once they have your money from a new purchase they don't really want to stand behind their commitment. I bought a bike from a friend, he paid over $2k for it and it needs adjustments and basically told those would be out of pocket and have to bring the original receipt. Like my friend I'm bad at keeping any paper and the serial number is easy enough to look up, so I feel that's kind of a cop out It's only $150 to do the adjustments somewhere else read more

Here is how I came to know and love Spokes Etc. Wake up Monday morning, work for a few hours, unchain myself from desk, notice it is nice outside. Grab bike, head west, get 13 miles away from home, turn around, notice that the W & OD trail is newly paved, hit gravel patch, eat it, get flat. Walk 2.5 miles to Spokes Etc., arrive at Spokes Etc. look disheveled, get pointed to the rest room to clean up my wounds while the fix my bike, leave very happy in under 12 minutes with new tube and a band-aid and a smile. Ride home 12 miles, yelp about how great Spokes Etc. is, take Advil, have a drink, shower, have another drink. read more

After reading raving reviews of this place, I decided to start my bicycle shopping at Spokes in Vienna. Bottom line - I was disappointed and came away empty handed :( The shop is nice and big and has a good selection of bicycles and accessories. Guess it was not my lucky day! I was looking for a commuter bicycle to bike to work and wanted to stay in the sub $1000 range. Don't think the salesperson liked that budget much coz he only showed me one bicycle in that range. My thoughts at that were: 1 Good bicycles are over $1000 and that I am out of luck trying to buy one without going over budget. 2: Maybe the salesperson was having a bad day and just did not care to provide me with a good shopping experience. Whatever be the reason, I walked out after doing a small test ride on the one bicycle that was offered to me. Plus all I saw here were mostly Trek bicycles - what about Cannondales, and Specialized, etc? I'm glad others have had better experiences here.... read more

I hardly ever give five stars to anything - to earn them, somebody needs to be both first-class and bargain-priced. Well, I got first-class service at Spokes when I broke my rear derailleur cable on a recent Saturday ride. It was just a bit out of my way, so I rode over on the 12-tooth (uuugh! uuugh!), and rolled my bike to the back of the shop. After about a five-minute wait for a wrench to finish the job he was doing, he popped my bike up on the workstand and changed that sucker out in less than a minute. Flipped through the gears, made an adjustment, said "Here you go," and charged me some astonishingly low price - maybe $12? I'd have paid four times that for rush service on a nice Saturday afternoon and been happy with it. Huzzay for Spokes Vienna! Oh, and kudos also for bike fitter Jeff Palmer at Spokes. You need a fit, he's the man. He'll spend the time it takes to get it right. I forget what he charges, but it's a trivial percentage of the cost of a good bike. read more

I want to like this place, but I cannot possibly recommend it. I am an experienced cyclist; have been road biking for 20+ years. I have dealt with all kinds of bike shops in all kinds of situations. Recently, I headed in to purchase a new set of Keo road cleats for my wife, who is a new cyclist and new to clipless pedals. I made the terrible mistake of actually asking one of the staff to install the cleats for me. I paid for my order, and left. On the very first ride out, the cleat on my wife's shoe came loose just as she was trying to unclip and stop as a big bus was barreling our way on a country road with a narrow shoulder in which we both had to stop for safety reasons. She could not clip out because one of the bolts had come loose, and the cleat was stuck in the pedal; I was watching her wobble as the big bus approached on her left; she had slowed down to disengage but I could see her wobbling unstably; I feared that she would tilt left straight into the bus as she was trying to get herself unstuck from her cleat at low speed. Luckily, the worst did not happen. She managed to get out of her cleat safely, with no further incident. I returned to the store, and asked for a bolt and a washer to replace the ones that fell out after their service. After explaining the situation, I got some knowledgeable commentary on how one should not over-torque the bolts on a cleat. Well, you guys certainly did not overtorque anything. You undertorqued it, and the equipment you serviced failed us when it really needed to work. Cleat installation is a fairly basic operation. I have had shops do it, and I have done it myself; I have NEVER had one pop out before in either case. I expect a much higher standard of skill from a professional bike shop. While pointers on torque strength are useful, I would prefer that the wrench work be done right the first time around. I want to like these place, because these are in fact very nice guys. The staff and manager were apologetic, and gave me a new bolt and washer and offered to do a re-install. I took it home and did it myself. P.S. As if to really make the point -- even the bolt they gave me was the WRONG LENGTH. Again, they are very nice guys, but do not offer the level of attention to detail you need for professionals who service equipment for a sport which has a considerable level of risk. I doubt I will give them a third chance on service, but I may stop in for a water bottle or a Clif bar or anything that would not put my life in their hands. read more

I used to mountain and road bike in the early 2000s, but haven't rode in almost 10 years. I decided to pick up biking again for exercise. In the last two weeks I have been to five bike shops multiple times in the Northern Virginia area: Spokes in Bell Haven, Spokes on Quaker Lane, Big Wheel in Old Town, Performance Bike at Tyson's Corner and Spokes in Vienna. Out of these locations Spokes in Vienna is BY FAR THE BEST operated location - without question. Having spent two weeks visiting stores, asking question (or trying to) and looking to purchase a new bike along with accessories I decided to make all my purchases at Spokes in Vienna. This includes paying more. Example: Performance Bike at Tyson's Corner was selling my pedal clips for $75. Spokes in Vienna was selling them for $115. I would have loved to purchased these at Performance Bike if in the 20 minutes I was in the store one of the five employees asked if they could assist me. I walked out the door and drove down to Spokes in Vienna and happily paid the extra money. Why? When I walked into Spokes within 2 minutes a friendly employee asked if they could assist me. And this store is busy, much more than any of the other stores I visited. I also purchased my bike here along with several accessories. Normally, I would purchase these items online and save money. But, I believe in supporting local stores and when they have great service I feel they are deserving of it. I also, I think, met one of the owners of Spokes and he spent 20 minutes speaking with me about the new technology in bikes since I've been out of it for 10 years. He and his employees were never pushy, very friendly and truly love biking as a lifestyle. Their service and willingness to assistance as needed makes this store my go to place for all my biking needs. Sadly, this is not the closest bike shop to me. There are three closer to my work and one to my home, but since those other store employees seemingly ignore customers I won't waste my time (and I was well dress - business shirt, slacks, etc). Spokes in Vienna is well operated and I hope the Spokes owners read this review and gives the manager at this location recognition. read more

I was highly disappointed that I had given a deposit back in early July 2020 for a specific bike which was indicated would come in December. I got a call in mid November indicating it would not be available any more given the bike supply issues. However the team did all they could to make it right and gave me some possible other options. Their team was very good at listening to my concerns and thinking through other potential solutions. Ultimately I decided to wait for the the specific bike I am looking for to come out again. But I will definitely buy it from these guys. They did what they could and even though I did not get what I had ordered I felt they had my interest in mind and it was just some unfortunate events. read more

I was happy with the tune up and the mechanics in back. However, when I returned to make a simple purchase midday 6/18, a kid greeted me out front, directed me to a register, and made 5-10 dumb/unfunny jokes, and struggled with the transaction, while I was attempting to get out of there quickly to attend to a personal matter (as about five other staff stood behind the counter and talked amongst themselves). Will someone please tell him to stop the lame stand-up routine? Super annoying. There's still hope for this guy if he gets a little self awareness and does the job professionally. read more

I didn't really believe all the rave reviews, but we had an incredible experience at this place. We went first to get some basic questions answered and the person we spoke with was informative and didn't push us at all. Went back two weeks later to buy the bike and it was gone--it was going to be months before it was in stock again. The woman we spoke with helped us find a great alternative and had us test-riding it in no time. We both decided to purchase bikes, and they had them built for us in a couple of days. We (stupidly) went to pick them up and ride them home in the middle of a terrible storm, and the whole staff was incredibly solicitous, giving us instructions on how to maintain the bikes after rain. They even just straight-up gave us a flashing light so we wouldn't get hit by cars in the foul weather and told us to bring it back whenever. Incredibly supportive employees. I haven't ridden a bike since maybe the 80s, so I was very nervous, but Spokes made the whole process of buying a bike simple, relaxing, and positive. PS LOVE the bike! read more

Normally I'm the type of person that shuns reviews based on a very limited interaction, but my spokes etc experience was so positive i had to review it. The "spokesperson" that i worked with so nice and helpful and didn't even laugh at my complete lack of knowledge of anything having to do with bikes. I think this was my exact question to the spokesperson Me: Um, I like to go to spinning classes but my feet swell in the strappy thing so i need new shoes. LIke the ones that go on top not in the strappy thing. , but i have unusually hobbit like feet so i need a big one Her: Put these on. And you will have to use an exacto knife to put in this cleat to clip it on (as my boyfriend starts laughing at the thought of me using an exacto knife) Me: Well what does this cleat thing look like (girl spends 5+ minutes looking for this cleat and then shows me.) At this point i kinda feel bad that i'm not actually buying the shoes but writing down the info for Santa to bring me for Christmas. But she was so helpful i was able to write a very easy to follow description for Santa. they have everything a biker could ever want... including a helmet with duckies on it! Now that I've made my first actual bike purchase at Spokes Etc. I figured an update was in order. My previous experiences have been limited to parts and services, but after getting an amazing deal on a new hybrid I wanted to reaffirm how great this store is. Service is amazingly friendly, and they really want to get you to buy the bike that's best for you. I've interacted with maybe 5 different "Spokes Persons" and each one has been as helpful as can be. Since the bike I wanted was a close-out model from a previous year, they were in limited supply but there was one remaining at their Alexandria location. They immediately called up the store to reserve it, had it transferred within the day, and took my refundable deposit. I ended up getting my bike a couple days later and had a chance to try it out before deciding on the purchase. I've heard that they will do extensive fittings for bikes, but I'm assuming maybe that's more for a road bike? If I were to have a complaint, it's that their selection isn't so great and they mostly carry Trek and Specialized brand bikes. Not a huge issue, but since Treks tend to be a higher priced brand it's tough to find something more economical. Even if you don't end up making a purchase at Spokes Etc. it's a great place to do some research and try some bikes out to get an idea of what features and products you definitely want. read more

I came in with my Ruby Specialized after neglecting maintenance on it for three years and feeling it on the gears...Mason was really thorough, made sure the bike felt right after changing the chain and cassette, and then rescued me what I wrecked my back derailleur a day later (right before I had to ship my bike out to SF for a race). Just the kindest people! will definitely come back for a full tune up next time I'm in the area. read more

Here's the deal. If you're new to bike purchases and / or new to biking in general, there's one individual you need to see. This is not to slam or crack on the other employees there, but this guy was the only person I worked with and he was / is the BOMB. His name is Floyd, and if you're looking for someone that can make sure the bike you want is a good fit for you, he is your guy. He helped me this evening in finding the right size road bike. The patience he demonstrated, the passion he has for ensuring the customer will be happy with their investment for the long haul, and his knowledge in general is a testament to the type of customer service that can be found at Spokes. They respect the price range you are trying to stick to if you have a budget, they are good at explaining what comes with the bike should you purchase it (adjustments for a year), and are generally enthusiastic about biking in general. This is a great store that should not be missed if you're looking for high quality sales staff! **Update 8/18/07** So I finally went back to buy my first road bike. Floyd set up three different bikes for me to try and compare. Not only did he fit them to me as best he could for a test ride, he also rode on the WOD with me to see my riding style and guide me on how to put the bikes through their paces. Seriously...this is customer service like I've never seen before and appreciate very much! One I chose "the one", he spent alot of time making the finer adjustments so accommodate my frame and measurements. The only bad thing, and it's minor really, was that after spending that money I didn't get a little freebie thrown in, such as a little bag for under the seat or something. But hey, I got a chance to ride the bike on a hellacious course today and I felt great after. After the experience I had in shopping here, I'd need alot of convincing to shop anywhere else for a future bike purchase. read more

Good, knowledge staff, except for the kid (salesman not mechanic...UPDATE, HIS NAME IS MICHAEL), who mistakenly told me I needed a new cassette and chain when clearly my gears just needed a little adjusting (confirmed by a second shop). Good gear prices when on sale. They killed a tree for that non multi-cultural mural on the side of the building, but I'm working through my anger on the bike trail. :0) The irony: Bikes, trees, the environment--you know. Seriously though, the service department needs some work. Good guys, but it's not cool to have $3000 bikes sitting out for any passing customer to monkey with out on the main floor for weeks while waiting for service. Service time also takes far too long, albeit they are really cool about helping a stranded rider. Bottom line--They need more mechanics. Also not cool to get back a serviced bike with grease on white tape handlebars and white seat. Each bike should be returned clean like a nearby Vienna bike shop does. read more

I stopped in here to get my bike tire repair since later on that week I was heading out on a bike ride to meet a friend in Reston. I am not your average NOVA biker so I didn't know what to expect for the time and or price for this repair. The repair staff was knowledgable, helpful, fast and efficient. I was in and out in maybe 5-10 minutes. I had drove my car there with my bike in the truck. However, this would be a great place to stop at while riding since their shop is located right near the WO&D trail in Vienna. read more
