Had not visited REI in so many years as its located a distance from Ashburn but it is a must visit store for any travel. Heading to Europe and different climates my wife and I visited and bought several items and joined REI. They are very helpful and returning/exchanging is made so easy. High recommendation.

Am not pleased they got rid of the lifetime warranty. They were a rare business to do that. To be fair probably quite a few people took advantage of that. I like REI, but I don't love it. The reasons are simple, and that's my competence with anything outdoors, and simply put they are often too expensive. To newish or amateur outdoor folks, you won't find a more knowledgeable staff anywhere! Their employees are A plus in every regard, and their customer service is exemplary. This is certainly a nice location, and they do have some neat toys. Their dehydrated MRE meals are quite decent. What do I usually buy from them? Those and polarized sunglasses. Yes polarized sunglasses cost more, but they do help with glare when driving or skiing. Here they have a good selection, and for less than the Oakleys that finally met their demise. Every time I've found a good pair, as I can do destruction on outdoor gear like none other. Their tents can be a pain to set up, but they are made of impeccable quality. As for bikes and most camping equipment, you can get the same for less elsewhere.

I have been an REI member since 1986 and am very disappointed at how the "experts" that REI hires as their employees do not know what "Customer Service" is. I went out of my way to attend the Fairfax REI's "Garage Sale" because I was on the market for some camping gear (tent, footprint, sleeping bag & sleeping mat). I had previously tried to buy these at the Richmond REI but after walking around for more than a half hour without finding any help, I left. Well, the Fairfax REI isn't any better. Below are pictures of their employees that I took as I was trying to gain their attention. The first one you can see Employee #1 watching a video on his smart phone while ignoring all the customers walking around him. The second pic shows 2 other employees having a map discussion in the middle of the store. The 3rd pic shows Employee # 1, walking past Employee # 2 & 3, away from me when he saw me walking towards him with an inquiry. I bought my camping gear from Amazon instead - at a lot less than what I would have paid at REI. I was more than willing to pay a higher price because they supposedly hire "Outdoor People" whose expertise you can tap into before you make the purchase. What good is all that (probably overpaid) experience if they don't make themselves available to customers? FWIW, I did contact REI about this incident and never heard a damn thing from them.

We drove over an hour on Black Friday due to the website and Apple Maps saying the store is open. Very disappointing.

This location has a bigger clearance section than the other locations. But the XL+ clearance items are usually sold out. They have sanitizer and the employees were wearing masks properly. Which is a plus during C-19. Also the store had good ventilation and the AC was on which is another plus. The cashier and manager were both very friendly, Highly professional & social. The general crowd is middle class really. Mainly Police, Fire & Military customers. The noise level was normal for a retail store. Mainly adults shopping. No kids really. It's located inside a shopping center so parking is not really a issue. I was asked to pay via Credit Card. So unsure if they aren't taking cash permanently or it was just temporary for that day. I would call before going. Overall A++, Just wish they had more XL+ clearance items. Love 5.11

Tara was able to find the bag in a different color which I was fine with to place it on hold for me and honor the price I paid online after showing the receipt. She also pointed out that there were patches that would be included with my purchase (I added a pouch and pants) which was a nice surprise! All in all, great experience from over the phone to checkout. Will definitely come back due to service alone.

We stopped by this Fair Oaks location to look for shoes, and we were impressed that they had a larger collection and also different styles of specific brands, compared to department and specialty shoe stores. It seems as every DICK's carry different styles, so be sure to check a few locations out. The staff here were friendly and sweet, and they had a great system of looking up the shoe and delivering them to you to try them out. There could be more seating area, as it was super limited, and there are various cashier points around the store for an easier checkout. Located at Fair Oaks, there's ample parking in the mall lot. +great selection of shoes and apparel +friendly service +located at Fair Oaks +plenty of parking in mall lot

Buy your item from their website NEVER BUY FROM Dick's. A store is only as good as its customer…read moreservice, and its entire success depends on the loyalty of its customers. For years, my family, friends, and I have been fiercely loyal to Dick's Sporting Goods. Whenever it came to sports items or fishing gear, I never even bothered checking other websites or competitors; I always went straight to Dick's and proudly recommended them to everyone. That loyalty ends today. Last night, I went to return a pair of shoes. Yes, it was past the 90-day window, but the shoes were completely unworn with the tags still attached. Any reputable store would, at the very least, offer store credit as a gesture of goodwill. Instead, Dick's policy is to buy it back at the lowest possible selling price, which feels like a complete rip-off and a scam to steal customers' money. To make matters worse, the store manager's behavior was incredibly rude, dismissive, and utterly unprofessional. Shocked by this treatment, I called their Customer Service line, expecting them to de-escalate the situation or at least apologize for the manager's misbehavior. Instead, the representative was completely useless. They didn't even care to ask which specific store location this happened at, offered zero help, and didn't even bother to apologize. This is, hands down, the absolute worst customer service experience I have ever had in my entire life in the United States. The silver lining? I also bought two pairs of shoes directly from the brand "On" last night. Due to this awful experience, I am returning the shoes I bought at Dick's, and I contacted "On's" customer service instead. "On" handled my situation beautifully, professionally, and resolved my issue with ease. My advice to everyone: If you want to buy sports gear, go directly to the brand's own website or store. Dick's doesn't give you any special discounts, their return policy for unworn items is a joke, and they treat loyal customers like garbage. I will never step foot in a Dick's Sporting Goods store again, and they have permanently lost my business.

Immediate Attention Required - Customer Treatment at Fairfax Location…read more I'm reaching out to bring a serious issue to your attention regarding your Fairfax location. I recently visited the store at the start of the spring season--typically a great time for cycling and community engagement. My intent was simple: get air in my bike tires. My initial interaction with a staff member was excellent--welcoming, helpful, and exactly what you'd expect from a community-focused business. That experience changed completely when your service manager became involved. The interaction quickly escalated into behavior that was demeaning, hostile, and completely unprofessional. I was spoken to in a way that was both disrespectful and humiliating--something I can honestly say I have never experienced in my 64 years. More concerning, I was told I was not welcome in the store. Let me be direct: that is not a customer service issue--that is a leadership issue. This individual represents your brand in the local community, and based on this interaction, does so in the worst possible way. Behavior like this doesn't just impact one customer--it erodes trust, damages your reputation, and pushes business away from what should be a community anchor. I also want to highlight the contrast: your frontline employee created a positive, welcoming experience. That tells me the culture at the ground level has potential--but it is being undermined by management behavior that is completely out of alignment. I am asking for two things: A review of this incident and the conduct of the service manager Clear confirmation of how you intend to address this moving forward I would strongly encourage you to take this seriously. Experiences like this don't stay isolated--they get shared, and they influence where people choose to spend their money. I look forward to your response. --Mark E
