I had a tubeless tire on my road bike that went flat over the winter and took my bike here and was told, "we don't do tubeless tires here", which is a ridiculous statement for any decent bike shop. He clearly didn't want to bother helping me and he suggested I go to another bike shop that doesn't open for 2 hours. Well, I'll never come back here. read more

I went there to have my Trek road bike serviced and was told it would be at least a month. They tend to specialize in recumbent & other specialty bikes. So I cannot review the quality of their services but can say the representative was honest about their backlog & he recommended another shop that was not especially convenient to Vienna. Instead I went to the Trek bike shop (formerly Spokes) on Maple Avenue & they were Awesome! It took them a week to provide me a major service with new cables, inner tubes, chain & handlebar wrap for $388. My Trek Madone is riding like new! I give the Trek Bike Shop 5 Stars! read more

I have a Giant road bike that was wearing out. I asked them to do a complete overhaul-- brakes, gears etc. it took a few weeks for the work, but it was well worth it. Price was very reasonable. Decided to fix up my 10 speed after snapping off the rear derailleur recently. I bought some parts online for a tune-up and a new derailleur, but quickly realized that my older bike isn't exactly easy to figure out. Needed a new derailleur mounting bracket so I brought the old one to Bikes at Vienna. The younger kid I talked to that day was very friendly and helpful. Gave me some good tips, I bought a handful of other items to increase my local business shopping after realizing I should have done that in the first place. Went home and began to work on my bike. Everything went well until I got to the cable for my front derailleur. I couldn't get it to stay tight. I eventually realized I need a new one because the gripping of the clamp is stripped and went back to Bikes at Vienna. This time there was no one out front, and I had to knock on the door. After about a minute or so, the older man who works in the shop with long salt and pepper hair came to the door. He quickly pointed out that I knew very little about the variety of front derailleurs and asked me to bring the bike in and fill out a ticket and someone would get to it. Seeming very annoyed with my presence. I asked if he could maybe show me some options because I had just been working on it and I thought I could probably pick it out. He very rudely cut me off and snapped at me that he doesn't have time to drop everything every time someone comes to the door and that I would need to drop it off, because we were dealing with a virus. Mind you I was standing about 8-10 feet from the door with mask and gloves on. I thanked him and let him know I would go somewhere else. As a professional who takes care of novice customers who rarely understand how little they know about my field, this IS NOT the way you treat people. I realize that I wasn't giving enough information and seeing the bike would've been much easier, but there was no cause for rudeness. You're lucky that you're in a high demand area for bike services. Still, I would recommend somewhere else. See my review for "Spokes etc." They were very helpful, despite the fact that they did not have what I need. They walked me through what I needed to buy and asserted some other questions I had. I'll buy it from their website to support them instead of Bikes at Vienna. I originally had a negative experience as they damaged the wheel on which I needed a tire replacement. Since it was for my wheelchair rather than a bike (that is, absolutely essential) and it was extremely expensive, I was absolutely devastated to the point of tears! I wrote to them to express my frustration; I didn't really expect a resolution and had resigned myself to being lucky if I got an apology. Nevertheless, the owner (Tim) went above and beyond - contacting the manufacturer and sending it out to be repaired. It's quite common for wheelchair users to go to bike shops for repairs because they are quick and the wheels are quite similar (often near identical and from the same manufacturers as bikes.) That being said, obviously the technician we got clearly did not have this experience. I do wish they had mentioned in advance that they hadn't worked on this sort of equipment so this entire situation could have been avoided. However, I get that they likely thought they could do it and mistakes happen. Really, the way Tim handled this was absolutely exceptional - professional, respectful, and expedient. read more

I brought in my trek Road bike to get a flat tire repaired. The young repair person did a great job inspecting the rim and determined what caused the rupture of the inner tube. He replaced the culprit with something that would not cause another problem. Did an excellent job and the price of the repair was fair. I was very impressed with the service!! read more

I bought an REI Novara bike for my commute and I loved it. i found that I needed a rack for my heavy bag for work. I took the bike for a regular service to Bikes at Vienna and asked them if they had any suggestions for a rack. Since REI uses Tern (I think?) to manufacture their Novara folding bike, the Tern rack that they had in stock fit the bike. They tested it out on the bike before installing it completely for me- such great customer service! The staff here is also extremely knowledgeable about local bike trails and how to commute safely. I am new to the bike commuting scene, so their help and the maps they have on hand have been incredibly helpful. I also took their basic bike repair class to help increase my bike literacy, great class! Great instructor! I highly recommend this shop for both bike neophytes and seasoned bikers. read more

We recently purchased two folding bikes from Tim and his wonderful bike shop. The staff could not have been more helpful in selecting and outfitting the right bikes for my wife and I. We purchased folding bikes to take on vacation and on boat trips to local stops to allow us to get a little exercise when we are not at home. Unfortunately, with quick succession I received a bee sting to the ear and a rear flat while riding the W&OD trail. While I am fully capable of changing out a flat myself on the trail, I figured it would be far quicker to have it done at a local shop. It ended up taking 40 minutes because the technician exploded the first replacement tube while attempting to triage new customers. The other employee could have helped shield her from these incoming customers but instead was watering the flowers outside. All of these sins would have been forgiven if the technician didn't charge me the ridiculous "walk-in service" price of $15. 15 dollars for replacing a tube's worth of labor is utterly ridiculous, and the decent thing to do (and what all Great bike shops do) would be to wave the fee given the less-than-urgent pace. read more

This is the best bike shop I have dealt with in the Nova-DC-Baltimore area, hands down. I've tried three or four different shops in the area- desperate to get timely, complete work done on my folding commuter bike by professionals; Unfortunately, College Park Bikes, Revolution Cycles and Light Street Cycles were found to be staffed by irresponsible, uncommunicative, trifling children. I'm very pleased with the work that Bikes @ Vienna performed on my bike. They kept me abreast of any issues that came up during repairs via email. They were up front and honest about costs, and the work was completed when they said it would be done. If you have a Dahon or a Brompton to get repaired, this place is a no-brainer! read more

I visited the shop when it opened and have been a customer since. I have owned a range of cycles, both recumbent and upright, and they have serviced all of them. While their recognized specialty is recumbent, they service all manner of cycle from kids through the latest leading edge recumbent. Outstanding service: A few Sundays ago, I started my ride when I noticed a new noise. I diverted to their shop and in less time then it is taking to write this, they had it up on a stand, problem solved and I was on my way. Icing on the cake - there was no charge AND shifting was better than ever. They did this even though they did NOT recognize me as a regular customer since I was helped by their weekend crew. Another situation, a year or two ago, I found I could not shift to the highest ring. As above, they quickly made a small adjustment and all was working again. If you travel the W&OD through Vienna, divert at Church St for a block and half to make a quick visit. Meet some great bike people and see cycles that you won't see anywhere else. read more

My wife and I have been riding a tandem that's essentially a time capsule. Nothing had been updated since 1985. Ben at A1 Cycles in Manassas suggested I take it Tim. I'm very glad I took his advice. Tim upgraded the rear cog and derailluer, adjusted the rear hub, replaced the front dereilluer and the bar end shifters. He didn't insist on padding the bill (sometimes inexperienced mechanics don't know the difference) by adding a new rear wheel, chain and chain rings. The price was excellent and the workmanship equally good. Some bike shops make the mistake of testing new installations on the shop stand and not on the road. This can make for an unpleasant surprise for the rider, because a gear system works differently when under load. Tim and his staff took the time to test our tandem on the road, so consequently our first ride was entirely problem free. If you have a tandem with a problem, I'm reasonably sure Tim can solve it. In fact, I would trust any type of bicycle to the staff here. Even though it's an hour each way from where I live, the trip was worth it. read more

We have purchased at least five bikes here for various members of the family. This is the place to come to try out the more specialized types of bikes. In my experience, semi-recumbent and recumbent bikes are vastly more comfortable than the "regular" kind of bike. Bikes@Vienna has a great range of styles to try. My favorite, the Bike E, is no longer manufactured, but John Brunow has been very helpful with finding spare parts and ongoing maintenance. Some of these specialty bikes seem expensive, but nothing is more expensive than a "bargain" bike you won't actually ride or that won't last more than a couple of years. Also, we have found that the semi-recumbent bikes are so adjustable, several people of different sizes can share a bike. John Brunow's goal in life is to get as many people riding bikes as possible, and he is a tireless advocate for biking as a means of transportation. read more

Even though I live in Hyattsville, MD whenever I need a custom part for my Dahon folding bike I make the trek out to Vienna, VA and visit Tim at Bikes@Vienna. Tim & Co. recently helped save me a costly repair by checking for warranty coverage on my folding bike. Turns out the parts and labor were still covered under a warranty I didn't even know I had, but Tim did and that is all the difference. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, they don't put on airs, and don't try to sell you unnecessary products. The only downside to Bikes@Vienna is that there's no Bikes@Hyattsville. read more

Ive been wanting a bike for a while and recently became interested in folding bikes. I have a normal ( as in non gas sucking monster ) sized car and the misses has a VW Bug. Neither of us wanted to deal with bike racks so folding bikes seemed the best choice. Doing searches lead me to Dahon.com and their dealer page had Bikes @ Vienna as the top option. My girl and I made a trip down just planning to just try a couple of folding bikes out. The staff there is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. They gave us a couple bikes to try out and we ended up buying two. I got a 07 Curve and she got a 07 Speed 7. We love both of them and went for a ride as soon as we got home. Bikes@Vienna is a great shop. We've brought our tandem and recumbents there for years, as well as occasional maintenance on regular bikes, and they always provide excellent customer service and quality repairs. When we had a problem recently with a tandem chain after a repair, Tim quickly said "bring it back" and they fixed it for free, even though it wasn't necessarily connected to the original work they did (tandem gearing is notoriously finicky). If you've got a single bike, rest assured they can work on it for you -- their team has to understand the most complex bikes out there, so a single is easy for them. The folks at the shop are very friendly, and they have a great selection of reasonably priced accessories in stock (including "Da Brims" -- which we are always asked about when we ride with them on). Until very recently, I hadn't been on a bike for some time, and I was pretty clueless when it came to bikes. But as the weather is getting nicer, I've decided that I want to start riding a bike. I haven't had a bike in years, and my last bike was more of a hassle than anything else because it was fairly big and heavy, and it took forever strapping it to the car rack to go anywhere. I decided that if I was going to start riding, I would need a bike that I could fold & take with me in my car instead of wrestling with a car rack, wasting time putting it on, and then worrying the bike would fall or be stolen if I left it for 2 seconds. I've been researching folding bikes for the past few weeks, have been to 9 shops, called 3 others, and there was VERY limited inventory in all other shops. (Most didn't have any, or they had 1 in stock). Because of the limited inventory I mostly researched online. Two days ago, I went to Papillion Cycles (also a great shop & was a great experience), and I thought I had my search narrowed down to 2 bikes- The Giant Expressway II, or a bike online that was comparable but less expensive. All other shops were clueless when it came to folding bikes, and the customer service in all other shops except Papillion Cycles & Bikes@Vienna was very much lacking. Then I went to Bikes@Vienna. This place is the best shop in the area. For starters, when I pulled up there was plenty of parking, and plenty of ground to test ride. A staff member was outside watching and helping other customers test ride, which I really liked. I immediately felt comfortable, and felt that I could take the time I needed to ensure I made the right choice. They have a good size inventory of folding bikes- more than any other shop I went to. The staff were friendly, very knowledgeable, and helpful. They educated me about all the different bike manufacturers & models out there, and they pointed out the pluses & minuses of each. They didn't push the higher priced options, but instead showed me how all the different models folded down, pointed out how they were different, and let me determine which would be the best for me. I quickly whittled down which models I liked, and without me needing to ask they gave me a helmet, wheeled the two models I was checking out to the outside, and had me ride. My intent today was only to gather more info before making a decision. Instead, I rode both and instantly knew that one was just a better fit for me. I knew I had found my bike. The experience was a pleasure! I will definitely be back and will recommend and refer others to this great shop! read more

The best speciality bike shop. Awesome staff, and the place to go to learn more or buy recumbents, trikes, folders (bromptons), cargo and comfort bikes. This is not the typical shop where everything is mountain and racing...no lycra here and man is that refreshing. They are more about bicycling for enjoyment and lifestyle. They are never preachy, and as they are located a block or so from the WO&D its a great spot to try before you buy. My wife purchased her Brompton from them and I hope to do the same soon. They also have a great selection of Brooks Saddles and various parts! Wether you are trying to resurect your dad's old schwinn and need someone who can work on a Sturmy Archer, or just parts to customize your ride. Bikes at Vienna specializes in non traditional bikes. So if you are interested in a recumbent or a folding bike, this is the place for you. I visit regularly for components associated with my Bike Friday travel bike. Since it uses 20" wheels there are few local bike shops that carry appropriate tubes and tires. From memory they are Bike Friday, Dahon, and Brompton dealers. So chances are that they have a good model for your needs and they are pretty good about encouraging people to take test rides. Their mechanics are quite good and Tim Fricker -- head mechanic -- is knowlegable and approachable. John Bruno, the owner, is very attentive and works hard to establish good relationships with his customers. We once had a minor misunderstanding and despite the trivial sum of money -- I recall that it was less than $10 -- John attended to it and made sure that we had an amicable ending. I have always received straightforward answers here regardless of whether they could or could not help my problem. read more

I'll echo the many comments here on the excellent customer service. Bikes@Vienna is the place to buy (among other types) a recumbent, because of their wide selection and vast experience with them. Nevertheless, you should do your homework before you go in. Poke around on the net to see the various types of recumbent, give some thought to the configuration and features you want (and why), and set a price range. The staff at Bikes@Vienna will do a better job matching you with a bike/trike if you have some firm ideas about your requirements and desires. Recumbents are expensive. It took me years to talk myself into spending that much money for a casual recreational bike, and now I'm kicking myself for not doing it earlier. (After 30 years on saddle seats, I had to give up biking, and I missed it.) I bought the cheapest brand of tadpole (the backwards tricycle configuration) and got just a few upgrades and options, and it cost over $1400. I could easily have spent close to $4000 on some other brands. I love the Terra Trike Rover I bought in April and have finally gotten comfortable with the recumbent experience. It wouldn't surprise me if I went back in a few years (if I stay healthy--I'm 63) and bought a fancier one after developing a good feel for what aspects of that experience I wanted to improve on. It's great exercise and tremendous fun--and these bikes are still rare enough to bring a smile to most of the people you pass on the trail. Bikes@Vienna is a top-notch retailer and repair shop. You won't be sorry if you stop in to investigate or buy. And stop in at the pasty (meat pie) store next door--the food is great. read more
