Gyros have never been one of my favorite go-to things and it has been several years since Ive had a good one. While driving thru Redding starving I opened my yelp app and was just blocks from this little greek shack that got rave Yelp reviews. (Thank you to those yelpers who put up photos with descriptions love having pictures before ordering! And especially photos of the menu not only so I know the best things to order and prices, but the the menu helps so much when we need to know options when Im traveling with friends who have food restrictions. All so helpful in making the final decisions!) The Place: This is a very tiny little blue shack in a parking lot between a liquor store and a gas station close to the street not set back. I dont know if its a good or bad area at night and I didnt catch their business hours but it seemed perfectly friendly during the day (no transients hanging about the liquor store etc). There was outdoor covered seating, maybe six tables. I'm not one for sitting outside that close to a busy noisy street while enjoying lunch so I got mine to go. The Cleanliness: This is critical to me so I always poke my nose into where food prep is if I can. Easy to see here as it is a shack. The food was covered, kept cooled, everything seemed sanitary, hands were clean, staff looked sanitary. There was a very very young child in there, which always makes me hesitant, but she wasnt playing with the food or anything or I would have walked away. So overall it seemed 'safe'. The Service: A young girl took my order with a great smile, and patiently explained my options. The woman making my food brought it out with a smile and an 'enjoy'. Really good attitude goes a long way for me. Those earn better tips, better reviews, and repeat visits. Also important when I order To-Go I dont want to have to ask for napkins, plasticware, sauces, etc. that would automatically come with a meal if was being eaten there. These people were perfect and everything was there without me having to ask. Finally, The Food: I ordered the Lamb combo: lamb gyros, hummus (with hot sauce on the side), and greek salad. $12. To go. They are very generous in their meat portions, not stingy with 3 little slices of meat like some places, no here it was cut thick and piled on so I felt it was worth the money. The meat really tender, juicy not dry. Not real strong lamb flavor and no crispy edges which I do like in gyros but excellent just the same. The gyro bread was soft, not doughy, and was warm. The romaine lettuce crisp and cool. But The SAUCE! The sauce OMG its by far the BEST Tzatziki sauce I've ever had! Really rich flavored with fresh dill taste but not overpowering in any way. Next time I'm asking to buy a tub of it to go cuz there are alot of foods I could put that sauce on its just sooooo goood. It truly made the gyro exceptional. They were generous with it also and some places you always have to ask for extra. Also next time I will try the gyros with the grilled onions which was an option. The greek salad was a very nice surprise. The dressing was very herby and really delicious, they were nicely generous with the great olives and most surprising was the super good quality feta not that weird hard brick stuff but actual creamy quality feta. The romaine was cool and crisp and fresh. My hummus was just ok plain but I like it spicy I had asked for hot sauce on the side. The hot sauce (which was really good) then made my hummus was perfect. The pita that came with the hummus needed to be cooked much much crisper for me but thats a personal preference. This place is 5 stars! My meal was worth $12 plus the tip to me. I had absolutely no complaints here. I will make a point to be back and will be telling all my friends. I hope your meal and service here will be as perfect as mine was. read more

Not very good. My salad was okay but the chicken that we were reassured was real, looked like turkey bacon in shape. Clearly processed meat.

I reccomend the classic combo and the Medditerranean tea. Tzatziki sauce on gyro was great, lots of tomatoes, onions, lettuce and meat. Salad was topped with spiced Feta and black olives, hummus tasty. Great alternative to fast food, filling and healthy! Seating is right on the street but they have a bathroom. read more

I tried this place for the first time 2 weeks ago & I've been back twice now. Loved it. I tried the Falafel combo & the chicken gyro combo & loved them both. Next time I'm going to try the lamb. Seriously tasty food & the combo is enough for 2 people & it's $10. You get a chicken or lamb gyro or Falafel wrap with pita chips, hummus (soooo good) & your choice of Greek salad or tabouli. It's really just a shack, so don't expect a fancy restaurant. It's just outdoor seating. I call my order in ahead of time to cut down on wait time because everything is made for you, it's not stored under heat lamps. I lived in Illinois for 2 years and had have had some really good, straight off the spit gyros there, so when I drove by this place a few weeks ago, I wondered about it. I was here on Yelp a few days later and saw it was recently reviewed so I read a few, liked what I see, and finally found the time to drop in today. The man who took my order was very kind, as well as the man who made my food, and it came out in a timely manner. I took it to go, but I enjoyed waiting on the small patio area in the warm sun, despite being on such a busy road. Once I got home and started eating, I was in heaven. I ordered the lamb gryo combo with hummus and tabouli and it didn't disappoint. I was in a paradise of delicious Mediterranean flavors from bite 1 to the last little morsel. I would highly recommend this place to anyone as well as bring my friends with me. I will return for sure. read more

My husband and I go back again and again. This is a poor location for outdoor dining due to the busy street, but a great place to get food to-go. The lamb gyros are delicious and the generous amount of tzatziki makes it even better. The Greek salad is satisfying, but the dressing in lacking in flavor. The portions are large (especially if you get a soda) and the staff have always been friendly. read more

Stopped with my wife and four kids. While it was noisy with seating near the road, the food was outstanding. Lamb shawarma was the favorite, but the hummus and Greek salad were delicious too. The gentleman serving us even provided some extra water and lemonade for the kids without us asking (it was quite warm out, and we'd ordered a single large drink to share). Tried the lamb Gyro here. It was very good. They are opening a 2nd location. Can't get my wife to try it. I think the small "shack" location is a turn off for her. It's just no frills good food. Prices were not cheap, but were good considering the quality was very good. read more

I had driven by this place hundreds of times before I finally tried it. I was so glad I did. The first time I was there I had the lamb gyro, and I've never tried anything else since. It is so good. They are big and meaty! It's worth the $7.00. When I go with my man one of us gets the gyro combo and add on another gyro. The combo comes with either a Greek or taboli salad and hummus with pita. Their hummus is so creamy and delicious. They top it with oil and seasoning. So good. The service is very fast and they are always friendly. read more

I went here for a quick lunch today based on all the positive reviews and man was it good! I got the lamb gyro with a Greek side salad and pita wedges with hummus. Excellent food. When I first started coming up to Redding my bf took me to the Greek Shack and I loved it. All their gyros are excellent - as is the salads, coffee, and baklava. The only thing I wish is that they stayed open later, at least on the weekends. I finish work on Friday late and on the opposite side of town but I often crave their fresh and delicious food. read more

Great little spot. They were very busy and it took about twenty minutes to get our orders but once I tasted the Lamb Gyro I realized it was well worth the wait and probably would be willing to wait longer next time if necessary. My Lamb Gyro came with a great little salad and humus with pita bread on the side. I will definitely be returning for more soon! read more

My god! This place is SO amazing! I don't normally eat Greek food, but maybe that's because it normally doesn't taste like this place. I also don't normally eat lamb, but again, the Greek Shack has changed my feelings about it. I would highly recommend the lamb gyro, and make it a combo meal. The pita is so fresh, and the hummus is the best I've ever had. Even the salad dressing was divine. Two can easily share this, it's a lot of food! I live in Portland, but if I'm ever driving through Redding again, this is my #1 food stop. Sorry In n Out, you've been replaced! read more

Hmmm...I've been really satisfied on the several other occasions with the food and service at the Greek shack but I ate there today and was completely underwhelmed with the falafel plate that I ordered. The falafel was dry, overcooked and way too salty, the portions were tiny for the $13 including tip I paid, the pita was stale, the falafel was poorly wrapped and fell apart immediately and the hummus was extremely bland and lackluster. Also the teenager running the place seemed more interested in hanging out with his buddy who was visiting than doing a decent job on my order...always a pet peeve...Grrr...I hate when one of the few reliably good places in town goes to the dogs! I may not ever eat at the Greek shack again. read more

Yummy, tabouli was fresh and hummus creamy. Lamb Gyros good, big portions slightly over salted. Don't let the location put you off.

We stopped here on our way up to Oregon. It's convenient to I-5. Yeah, it's definitely a shack, and that was part of the appeal to us. It's a lot of fun eating outdoors in this place. (The Chicken Shack nearby is definitely not a shack and looks to be a lot less fun.) The food is fine, but nothing special. I had a Greek combo with Greek salad, dolmas, and hummus and pita. The hummus very really pretty good, the dolmas were OK, and the Greek salad was just shredded iceberg lettuce with some feta and tomatoes, nothing too special. My traveling companions both had gyros and felt it was not that good (but not awful). At $10 for the salad combo I had and $8-9 for the gyros, Greek Shack prices are comparable to what we'd pay in the Bay Area. I can think of half a dozen places within walking distance of where I work in San Francisco that do better and are no more expensive than the Greek Shack. But I might stop back for the hummus and pita, which are more difficult to come by in Redding. And for the fun of eating at this place! read more

I'm having a very hard time believing that the reviews for this place are real. Some of the worst food that I've ever eaten. We ordered the Chicken Gyro. It was expensive and I have no idea what kind of meat it was, but it sure didn't look or taste like chicken. Really expensive, took forever to prepare and we will not be bak. read more

Food was delicious, we tried both the lamb and chicken gyros. The classic plate comes with a big serving of hummus, pita and salad in addition to the gyro. Plenty of food for $13. Also had a piece of baklava which was really nice, not too sweet, and the Turkish coffee. Would definitely be back. read more

What a find! Don't let the location or spartan exterior dissuade you from trying this gem. The Greek Shack is delicious and the food definitely freshly made. I had the gyro combo and it came with a side salad and more hummus than I could eat. Next time I'm bringing an ice chest to take the extra home. Very friendly service. Really!?!? These people giving 4 and 5 stars must have not eaten at any other greek food place. I say food place because it is a little shack. I got the meat gyro and my bro got the chicken, we both had the runs the next morning. The shaved meat is some of the worst I have experienced. But if you don't travel and your body is used to nasty food then go for it, Greek Shack is the only greek food you all probably have for miles around. I for one will never go back, yuck! Me and my wife tried this for the first time it was some of the best gyros we have ever had didn't think such a place in that the out of the way location could be that good. Also the food portions are quite generous for the price. We both will be going back soon. read more
