Once the new fence had been installed, I contacted Great Dane and it became a matter of waiting for it to stop raining. We needed at least two rain-free days. Customer service at Armstrong, the stain we used, suggested reapplying and wiping off after 24 hours (Dane's wiped off the same day, hence the problem). The owner came out to evaluate, but seemed reluctant to do the other coat because at the time, we'd both thought it looked good with just one (but I'm no expert and didn't know it needed to sit so long). Said he'd call Armstrong himself. That was in July. Never heard back. It's now October. Wasted $1,000. read more

After paying $1384.00, we have been scammed and ghosted by Great Dane Staining. The long and the short of it? After SIX WEEKS, my brand new fence has one and a half coats of the WRONG STAIN and Great Dane won't return to fix or finish the job. Read on for details... Our entire interaction with Great Dane Staining was a disaster. When Larry Jeffrey, Salesman and "Project Manager" arrived to provide a quote on 7/15/20, he wan't wearing a mask even as he explained "and I only have one lung!" when I asked him to keep to a social distance. He provided a quote in writing ("$1384 Out The Door") for Cabot semi-solid stain (also in writing) and explained they were scheduling a week or so out. He dropped off a sample board the next morning, as promised, with the Cabot semi-solid colors we chose out of the catalog he provided. We heard nothing back for weeks so reached out on Monday 8/3/20 and were promised they would come later that week. We told Larry final our color selection - "Dark Gray." They finally arrived on Friday 8/7, very early in the morning. My husband greeted them and went to work. By the time my daughter and I awoke, the entire fence was covered in a transparent shade of light gray. I called Larry, alarmed. He asked if it was too light, and I told him "yes." He said he would come by. I waited. After a little while, I looked in the backyard and the color had changed slightly, but was still see-through. When Larry arrived, he told me he had instructed his workers to apply another coat of the (wrong) stain WITHOUT ASKING ME and that I owed them $200 more for the second coat of a Cabot SEMI-TRANSPARENT stain, which they ran out of about halfway into the second coat! He left and I called Derek, the owner, whose voicemail was full. I texted him and he called back right away. He told me to go online and pay the original price and they would come finish when they stained our neighbor's side of the same new fence on 8/10/20. That day, I went out to make sure the workers would finish the second coat. I went back to work and by the time I looked again, they left AGAIN without finishing the job. I called Derek. Voice mail still full. I texted Derek. No answer. I called and texted Derek two days later. No answer. I emailed their general address. No answer. After SIX WEEKS, I have a brand new fence with one and a half coats of THE WRONG STAIN, we are out $1,384 and have been ghosted by Great Dane. Do yourself a big favor and find another company for your staining needs. read more

I had my fence stained this year in the early spring. I called to request a free quote and Larry contacted me immediately to set up the free consult. He arrived early and was very professional and yet extremely easy to talk to. He educated me on my choices and stain options and was very clear about what to expect. Great Dane did a lovely job staining our fence. His price was a little bit higher than the other quote I got, but his quote was based upon coming out and actually looking at the fence and seeing some of the tricky areas (retaining wall, plants). He even offered to get us a good deal on the stain he uses if we decided to do the work ourselves. That's some honesty for you. I was out of town on business for two weeks right after his quote, so I didn't hire him right away - I was impressed that he didn't bug me with follow-ups or high-pressure sales tactics like some home contractors do. Anyways, he was able to come out two days after I emailed to hire him. We'd just had heavy rain and the fence was pretty mud-splattered, but he and his assistant did a great job brushing the mud and dirt off the planks before staining. The only reason this is 4 stars instead of 5 is that he put up a sign on the fence without asking. I promptly took it down. (And T15 anti-tamper screws? C'mon, you can't out-engineer an engineer.) In the future, please ask. I would have agreed to a temporary (week or two) yard sign, but not a permanent sign on the fence itself. read more

The fence was grayed by 2 years of weather, but he bleached the fence first to bring back the original wood color before applying the stain.
