There are a whole slew of reasons I'm giving this company 1 Star. First off, the owner Todd would not come look over the job beforehand so we were on the same page. Second, he is dishonest about pricing. Third, as the owner, you are responsible for your employees. His worker damaged the paint on my siding using gorilla tape instead of blue painters tape. Not just 1 area, the whole bottom plank adjacent to my porch. We won't even get into the names he called my wife (cuss words) when she called to have the job finished. The job is still not finished. I'm in a service oriented business who recommends good fellow contractors and Todd is not one of them. I have documented the way he spoke to me & my wife & have documented the damage. The job is still not finished & we are to the point we don't even feel safe having Todd back over. Save yourself the trouble & use someone else. Oh & he's been paid in full. I contacted Custom Deck and Fence via word of mouth. They tore down our old fence and installed a brand new 250 ft horizontal fence. We decided on the horizontal style to match the other modern updates we have been doing with the house. Since you're not supposed to stain a brand new fence, Todd and his crew came back to stain it 2 months later. We went with cedar naturaltone for the color. His team replaced rotted planks and built a stair handrail for us, in addition to re-staining the entire deck. All for a decent price. He moved all my furniture and plants off of my deck (a big job) and even took pictures of where everything went so he would know how to put it back! All I can say is my husband and I agree we would never do business with Todd or recommend his services. We found Todd on Yelp and saw the other one star reviews but were skeptical because he had so many other five star reviews. We figured it was an isolated incident and unfortunately we were wrong. We contracted with Todd to have him tear down our existing roof on our pergola which was leaking when it rained and put on a new roof that did not leak. We made it pretty clear the only reason we were considering doing the renovation was to get a deck roof that would not leak. Todd came out on a Wednesday and the quote was received on a Friday, the quote included in one lump paragraph a total cost to fix the roof as well as other items we asked about when he came out to do the bid. Unfortunately the quote was not broken down for us to understand how he got to the price he quoted us. I emailed him back on Friday stating it was too much and asked him the cost to just fix the roof and not the other items discussed. He emailed me back on Saturday with a new cost and stated the work could be completed on Monday (per our request). Since he emailed me on Saturday I asked him to call me back so I could speak with him directly. The quote still seemed high to us and I wanted to see if we had any wiggle room, something I later found out after the job was completed that he took a huge offense to. Not only did he keep bringing it up that we tried to screw him by negotiating, something that is a very common practice, we also had the audacity to do business with him on the weekend. In my opinion if someone chooses not to do business on the weekend you simply don't respond or state that you don't do business on the weekend. You don't conduct the business on the weekend and then turn around and give your clients grief. The job started on a Monday and it was scheduled to take a day which it did. Todd called us that night asking for final payment; we paid half at the beginning of the job and agreed to pay the remaining when the job was completed. However perfect timing for us it was predicted to rain and we asked if he could wait for a couple of hours to see if the roof would leak. This set him completely off, he immediately started yelling and cursing at my husband demanding payment and threatening to put a lien on the house if we didn't pay right away. When he realized he wasn't going to bully my husband into paying he started calling me leaving me nasty voicemails and threatening to put a lien on the house. We weren't asking for much just a couple of hours because it was predicted to rain. Any business that stands behind their work would consider this a normal request. It wasn't until I sent him a text stating we fully intended on paying him but I had concerns that he wouldn't back his work if it did leak that he calmed down. Turns out the roof did leak and we have videos to back our claim, he did send out his crew and after three attempts the roof was leak free and the job was completed on Thursday three days later. I would like to acknowledge that his crew was very helpful and understanding of our concerns. Unfortunately Todd is the owner and ultimately the decision maker and everything needed to be run by him. Which brings me to another point, on the first day, Monday, one of the workers pointed out to my husband that it would be beneficial to move our back gutter. Rather than go through Todd my husband offered the worker $60.00 to take down the gutter a job that would not entail much per the worker. The worker declined stating he had to go through Todd, who eventually quoted $550.00, once again a high bid. We declined to remove the gutter because honestly the gutter was there when Todd initially came out to give the bid and if he felt it was a concern he should have mentioned it at that time. However, throughout the next few days while trying to get the roof repaired Todd kept referencing this incident saying we are classless (his words) and referred to my husband as someone that couldn't be trusted to tell the truth about the roof leaking. We had to send videos and even that wasn't enough so we eventually asked to have someone meet us to prove the roof still leaked. All in all this was a horrible experience and one I wouldn't wish on anybody which is why I am writing this review. This is by the way our second review; Yelp removed my husband's first review stating it didn't have enough information. I personally had asked my husband to keep it simple. Immediately after posting the first review Todd once again called us within a matter of minutes leaving a very disturbing voicemail on my phone and a rude text message. I told my husband of this and he called Todd which resulted in Todd threatening my husband if he did not take the review down. We contacted the police and have a case number should any of this harassment continue. I really struggled with writing this review but want people to know of our experience. read more

Todd is quick to respond, great price, super tidy, knows his business - worried about how much of the prior stain needed to come off with the power wash so the grain would look good with the new coat. Very careful to wipe all the stain off the metal posts, got into all the nooks and crannies, super careful of the neighbors house and driveway. Covered the bushes and pool completely. After a lot of deliberation, husband and I decided to post this review of Custom Deck and Fence Staining. Todd came out and gave our deck repair and paint project a quick look - he came back with a middle bid but more importantly his crew was available on our tight schedule; this is why we chose Austin Custom Deck and Fence Staining. Throughout the job, Todd kept coming back for more money for yet more lumber. Apparently he underbid our project and did not take the time or care to accurately assess the extent of the repairs; we were annoyed but continued to agree to his additions without any fuss. I did ask Todd to update his invoice/estimate so we could try to keep on budget and we would have a record of the costs. He started showing signs of being annoyed at giving me the updated invoice. I just figured he was stressed. At the painting stage is when things really went sour. My husband and I showed up to check on the job. Todd became enraged when we pointed out his crew had mispainted part of the decking and needed to repaint with the correct color. Pool surround was left with gunk from tape and the overspray on the pool equipment was upsetting - we recently had all the equipment replaced and I had cautioned the team to make sure to mask off but they masked only casually leaving a lot of overspray. Pointing this out only made Todd angrier. Over the course of next two days Todd started demanding to be paid in full, swearing, calling us names, "Just give me the f**king check!" At one point my husband and I threatened to call 911 and considered filing a police report. His response was to pace angrily in front of the house until we "paid up." We paid Todd in full, just to get him away from us. At no point did we ever indicate that we would withhold his fee; indeed we felt that he had seriously underestimated the lumber and paint quantity and prior to his angry outbursts were feeling a bit sorry for him. And the deck? Some areas were not repaired and the paint job was incredibly sloppy. They did not clean the deck at all before painting, just painting over leaves, dead bugs, whatever. Trash everywhere and many of the smaller tasks left completely undone. The final bill was about 25% over the bid. read more

I've been putting off re-staining my deck for at least a year because I was hoping to do it myself. After getting a door hanger from Todd, I decided to call for a quote. Todd showed up on time and was very professional while he gave me the quote. The price seemed very competitive to me (we had got a couple of quotes 4 years ago when the deck was last stained. I'm the type of guy that would usually get multiple quotes, but Todd's price was very reasonable and he seemed very trustworthy. So we went ahead with it. Todd didn't give me a quote with a 4 page disclaimer, he gave me a quote and told me I'd love my fence - and I do! Since I had my fence stained I waited two days to test sprinklers and one needed to be moved. With in 48 hours they came out and did the move - that easy. Spectacular results on my double deck! It turned out better than I had hoped for. We are very pleased with the end result! Todd was was easy to work with and communicated updates timely, and I was impressed by his professional and hard working crew. The project took a bit longer than expected, but I realize it was a large and complex undertaking. Our only (minor) issue was when Todd asked for an additional unplanned payment during the project, but to his credit he didn't push it. I chose a solid stain, but would probably go with a transparent stain if done again. But that's a personal preference and nothing to do with the quality of the result.
