Abe had his work cut out for him when he tackled our deck replacement. Ours was a project had been rejected as "too complicated" by another local deck company. The project had many steps to coordinate: - Obtain permit. - Removal of the existing deck surface, including 3 layers of indoor/outdoor carpeting, along with existing railing. - Replacement of the deck underlayment and waterproofing of same. - Demo and removal of the existing metal and concrete stairs. - Addition of the new Ipe deck material and cedar facia. - Rebuilding the stairs and stair landing. - Addition of new metal and glass railings. Abe and his crew replaced a failing substandard exterior stairway to an apartment we have on top of our detached garage and added a small deck. This was more of a "utility" project to enhance existing functionality than an "architectural" project to beautify a home. This drove the practical design and budget. Abe was on time for the initial consultation, on time with bids and up front about design considerations and costs. He was also transparent about some minor glitches along the way. None of this was typical for other contractors I engaged. Most other contractors were obviously in over their heads. A few applied costs more typical of a commercial project - I needed a Honda and they were trying to sell me a BMW. I was seriously ill during the entire duration of the project and was not able to monitor progress, so I trusted Abe to deliver as promised and he and his crew exceeded my expectations. His crew are full time craftsmen, not contractors hired job to job and it shows. I was not disappointed, they did a great job and left the work area cleaner than they found it. We hired Austin Deck Company to replace our existing deck earlier this year and we couldn't be happier with their work. Our original deck was 20-year-old standard yellow pine and the previous owners apparently did nothing at all to preserve it. It was also split into two height levels which reduced the usable area of the surface, so we wanted the new one to all be one height. I was left with a good impression after my first meeting with Abe. Out of the four contractors we got quotes from he was the most professional and just seemed to have a lot of experience to draw from. He gave me some suggestions about the design and fleshed those thoughts out later through the design drawings he sent me. Kris, the crew lead, helpfully answered the questions I had once construction began. He and the rest of the crew were all very polite and they just did an amazing job. I planned to install deck lighting myself afterward so I asked them to pre-drill small holes in the posts during construction (to run wiring through) and they took care of that no problem. It's been about six months now and we're still completely happy with our new deck. We love the natural color variations of the western red cedar and everything feels wonderfully sturdy and secure. It's rare that I am left 100% satisfied with a company, so I wanted to make sure and leave a review for these guys. Two words: exceptional experience! We went into this process very reserved, since we were almost scammed out of our money by another company. Honestly, this was not necessary when dealing with Abe Oeltjen and Austin Deck Company. We called them him out on Monday evening, for a quote. We received an excellent quote for our (~20' * 30') deck. Tuesday, we decided to go ahead and move forward, signed the contract, and asked when they could start (expecting a bit of a wait). They were waiting outside our house the next day at 07:00. Chris and his crew were 100% professional the whole time they were here. They even took a moment to fix a fence post for our neighbor, at no charge. They were fully open and honest about anything we asked, and always checked before doing anything that we might have an opinion about. They completed our giant deck in two days (writing this on Thursday). They definitely overbuilt the frame, so it is not going anywhere. I always like to wait awhile before reviewing stuff, especially contractors, because lets face it: Hiring folks is never a perfect process. Even the best of experiences typically has a point or two where you second guess whether that was the right outcome or not. That being said, its now been about a month and I think its fair to give them an honest assessment. The thing about Austin Deck Company is that they will do a good job for you, but they will not do a great job. However, they will charge you the great price. We hired ADC to remove our aging deck/frame and replace it with a brand new frame and composite deck. The scope of the project was a complete 'scorched earth' reboot: Remove everything to the ground and build it from scratch. I think this is important to call out, because this really gave ADC complete control of the entire process with no challenges like having to bend to this or that. The space was theirs and they owned it. Despite being contracted to remove all elements of the old deck, ADC chose to only dig out about half of the old concrete footings that the old deck had. Instead they just sawed the supports off at ground level and tried to cover some of them with dirt. The workman did not remove some of the other physical materials from the old deck (garden stones, etc) but I went ahead and did this myself as I wanted to move the project, which had legitimately stalled due to rain, ahead The new frame went in very nice - I give full credit that this was a success and I am still very happy with that element. And the decking itself went on very well, although I am afraid that is about all that did go as expected. Despite a clearly defined conversation and subsequent email, the ADC project coordinator took it upon himself to customize the deck by cutting a hole in it, even though we had discussed the option and he had been told in writing not to. That decision nearly put the project in serious jeopardy. A few days later the deck was installed and the posts and railing up, but I was very disappointed at the lack of detail work that remained undone. For example, the railing made sinking the mounting screws difficult, which I can understand, but that left a good quarter inch of the screws sticking out at a 30 degree off angle. When I raised the issue, the ADC coordinator shrugged it off with a comment about how hard it is to get them all the way in. Not exactly my problem as a customer in my opinion. Also, the railings were not exactly even level. That seems like something that could have been avoided by simply measuring from the deck up and marking the target spots with a pencil. Another key misstep was the way the workers tried to discard their leftover cement through our fence to the green belt behind our house, coating the bottom railing with cement. Eventually it was all done and I have been using the deck for about a month now and it feels very solid. The edges are clean and straight, and my family is looking forward to using it for years to come. However, I expect we'll still be picking up discarded screws from the workers out of the grass that whole time. We've lost track of how many dozens of screws were littered about the job site, and my favorite, the discarded razor sharp metal pieces trimmed from the railing scattered in the grass around my infant son's sandbox. Very disappointed about that. I am glad I had the work done, but if I give it too much thought I cannot shake the feeling that I did not get the top notch quality I was actually charged for. Although I have no plans to ever redo the deck, if I did, I would likely go with a different vendor next time. read more

Knowledgeable, Attentive and Detailed. We called 4 companies and 3 companies came out and gave us an estimate. Austin Zen design unfortunately stood us up but we didn't make an additional effort to contact them. Being the first timer on making any addition to house, we had so many questions about it such as permit, what types of materials to use, etc. We had a scrap book of the pictures of decks we liked and we had some ideas but we didn't know exactly what kind of deck we wanted . Austin Deck company stood out because it was only the only company out of 3 that not only knowledgeable but was willing to spend a lot of time to explain different options to us and made us lots of suggestions without pressuring. Maybe we just got lucky Abe (our sales rep from Austin Deck). We mentioned to him that we liked the fence in some house in the neighborhood and he drove to the house to look at it that day and let us know that it was no problem to do the same fence. The reps from the other two companies gave us exactly 15 minutes and one syllable answer for any question we ask. After all the talking was done, Abe sent us 3D modeling of the deck and fence we discussed along with a quote. so we signed the contract with Austin Deck even tho they were about $1000 more expensive. The guys came out to install was very experienced with good workmanship. The deck and fence came out exactly we pictured and we could not be happier. read more

Donny and the two contractors here were fantastic. I spent a ton of time looking for a deck company who I could actually get out to our house and provide us with a quote. Just a day or so after sending in my request Donny responded and was at our house that week. We booked him at beginning of June or so and had our deck completed first week of July. Took the crew 2 1/2 days and our deck is beautiful! He came up with a fantastic design that we didn't even think of and the craftsmanship is fantastic. Even after they were complete we felt a couple of boards were loose and he came back to reinforce them, not taking our check until he was happy with it. I can't believe I haven't rated Austin Deck Company until now! Back in early 2015 we got several quotes on a unique project we wanted built: a pergola over our existing deck with a strong enough structure to mount 30 solar panels on top (to shade the deck and simultaneously generate power), complete with structural engineering calculations to prove it could handle both the weight and significant wind up-lift forces. We also needed our contractor to work as a sub-contractor to our solar panel installers... which meant waiting to get paid by a third party. I work in mechanical engineering and provided Abe with my plans for the pergola. After visiting our home, he came up with modifications that made it both sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing than what I had envisioned. We LOVE having the "solar pergola" over our deck. We get a lot of compliments on it from friend, neighbors, and even a structural engineer! Now we are getting ready to replace the old deck, and we're talking to Abe again. WOW! Absolute perfectionist work! This company really cares about the job they are doing, how happy you are about it, and staying in constant communication through the whole process. I contacted Austin Deck Company on Monday, Abe came out that evening and looked at our space. He answered all of my questions, and provided his expertise when it came to choosing the correct type of wood. He had a complete 3D mock up of the deck to me that evening, along with a quote that was very fair and affordable. I had a few more questions via email, and he was always very quick to respond. We requested to move forward with the project on Tuesday, and he sent over a very detailed contract with everything they would be doing, and exactly what types/size of wood and every type of screw/anchor they would be using. They started Wednesday morning - they were about 10 mins early (on time) - this really impressed us. They were never late. They finished Thursday afternoon with the completed 20'x30' deck. They even pressure washed it before they left. The deck is of very high quality, and the gate they built for me in the railing is top notch (super fancy). They really know what they are doing. My review is based on our initial consultation with Abe. We haven't had any work done yet... Abe showed up only slightly late and was apologetic. He seemed very knowledgeable about decking, wood, etc. I was inquiring about a repair/rebuild of our old deck as well as a possible pergola construction. Although he delivered somewhat bad news - we would need a complete tear-out and rebuild, he was very up-front about needing demo and building permits for our job, and I felt confident that things would be done by the book. After peering under the deck we have, and seeing there is a decent-sized patio there, he suggested we might just consider tearing out the deck and using the patio, as it would put us down on the level with our pretty flowers, etc. He said we might try that for a while to see if we like it, and we could always rebuild a raised deck later. We were very pleased with our interaction with them, the construction process, and the final product. Our project was a retro-fit. We used existing posts but put down new Trex decking and a complete new rail system. Dennis worked with us on the design and meticulously planned out each option. The two individuals who did the work were here about 3 weeks. They were courteous, competent, and a pleasure to work with.
