Filled in cut that was made by mistake.

The deck looks nice overall, but there are multiple mistakes, poor communication, and a high price that makes me not recommend Roadrunner Decks to anyone. The deck work itself gets 4 stars, but the communication receives 1 star. The work included replacing the all-wood railing with a nicer black metal railing, a new gate to keep a small pet inside, replacing two posts that had some signs of rot at the bottom due to poor yard drainage and to sand/resurface the deck. The total cost was $4,800 for a 250 sqft deck. The problems: - Jett, the project manager, said we would have one final walk-through once after the work to ensure everything looked good. They guys finished the job, and I never heard from Jett. Communication with Jett has been extremely poor throughout this entire project. He is never quick to respond and can sometimes take days. - The initial gate was not sufficient in meeting my requirements to keep my pet inside. Roadrunner Decks did acknowledge that was an upfront requirement and corrected it, but it also meant they cut one of the posts for the first gate position by mistake. See the picture. - Two parts of the metal railing was loose and raddled. Jett said they would fix it, but they only fixed one and not the other. It looks like a simple stripped screw, from what I can tell. The fact that they just left it this way without any communication is inexcusable. - They did not clean up their mess in the yard when Jett said they would. A bucket of stain was left behind and now I have to dispose of it. Chunks of cut wood were left in the yard. I found some random screws lying around too. - When Jett came in to follow up, he kept talking about all of these other jobs they had lined up. It made it feel like I was just another job they were trying to get through to move on to the next. I personally don't care about the other jobs. I only care about the one I paid you $5k to do here. I simply can't recommend a company that made mistakes they didn't correct, had day-long poor communication, and just moved on to the next job without a care in the world for their final product. It makes it worse that Jett kept repeating they do great work and will make sure I'm happy with everything before the job is completed. It seems like most other reviewers worked with Byron Gueguen (owner) instead of Jett. If the communication was great, this could have easily been a 4 or 5-star review.

I'd recommend Roadrunner Decks to anyone looking for a deck in the Austin area. Byron was an excellent communicator, thoughtful and helpful throughout the process. He gave us a fair quote for the work and committed to not changing the price after we accepted his bid. Even more impressive was Byron's team. They put the deck up in no time and it looks beautiful! We look forward to spending time on that deck for years to come.

    Our beautiful new pergola

We recently hired Roadrunner Decks for our re-decking project. They did an amazing job and it completely surpassed our expectations. We kept the same footprint as the old deck and luckily were able to keep the same framing. Roadrunner's crew removed the old decking and privacy wall, leveled the frame, reinforced the existing beam and footers, added a new footer for the pergola we were adding, and added completely new decking, stairs, railing, privacy wall, and a beautiful 22' x 12' pergola. The result is stupendous and our deck is now usable in the triple-digit heat! Byron was very responsive to my emails and attentive to design details. His crew was fabulous and completed the demo and rebuild in about a week and a half. A couple of months later, we hired them to stain the deck and that also looks fantastic. Communication was a little more delayed for the staining bid, but not prohibitively so. Their staining bid was a little higher than others we got, but that's because they hand-roll/brush the stain and don't use a sprayer, so it takes longer. The results were definitely worth it, though!

Our new pressure treated pine deck (unstained) and old pergola (not built by Roadrunner decks).

We had a excellent experience with Roadrunner Decks! Our existing deck, built by a previous homeowner, was starting to fall apart and we knew we probably wouldn't be able to salvage it. We contacted a few companies for quotes on a new deck and Byron at Roadrunner Decks was the first to respond. We set up a time to meet and discuss the project we had in mind and Byron seemed to get exactly what we were wanted and was really great about keeping in our budget. After he drafted up a visual representation of what our deck would look like, we were excited to start the project. We could really tell that Byron and his crew were passionate about their profession and treated our deck as if it was their own being built. Communication throughout the process was excellent as Bryon always made himself available via email and phone. We were thrilled with the final result and even have plans on upgrading our pergola in the future. In the meantime, they were able to work with our existing pergola and make it fit in perfectly. We will definitely be recommending Roadrunner decks to all of our friends, family and coworkers. We couldn't have asked for a smoother experience!

Michael Gueguen (right) and his AWESOME team that built my even more AWESOME deck in under a week!

How am I the first to review this company on Yelp!? I just had THE best contracting experience ever! Michael Gueguen and his son, Byron own Roadrunner Decks and I read their Google reviews as well as the reviews from their website before requesting an estimate to have a deck built onto my house. This was to be a fairly quick process so I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to get this done in the small amount of time I was giving these guys to do it in... basically a week and a half before I headed out of town. This company far surpassed anything that I thought I'd be getting that's for sure! I wrote Michael on the weekend and by Tuesday we'd had a deal and his workers were in my yard. His team (2 guys - Acosta, who's been with the company for 20+ years & another man) would begin each work day by 7:30 - 8 am and work non-stop (of course with a small lunch break) and would leave my house around 8:00 pm every evening. It took them less than 6 days to build my deck and this was no small task! It even poured rain for 3 out of the 6 days but it never seemed to bother them. These two guys were polite, professional and always in good spirits. I've never had such a good experience with a contractor before. My backyard is GORGEOUS with this new addition. We'd decided to opt for the composite material, which was a bit pricier but I know will be completely worth the money. The rest of my neighbors who do have decks either have cedar or treated pine and you can tell they have their work cut out for them by having to sand, stain, and reseal their deck each year. If you have the extra $$, go with the composite - it's worth it. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this company. I am just so pleased to have picked these guys and have no regrets whatsoever. I'm looking forward to calling them back to have an awning built over the deck in the future (it wasn't in our budget at the moment). Thanks so much Michael & Byron! Your design and your team have made my backyard beautiful that's for sure!

We were very pleased with Byron and Roadrunner Decks. They replaced our deck that was over 20 years old and rotting. We used a higher end composite material that turned out great! I would highly recommend them. The results exceeded my expectations. Great customer service from Byron and Efrain.

When we went looking for a contractor to build the new deck, we found Austin Outdoor Builders through their listing on Yelp and their website. Kit called me within a couple of days of my email, and really impressed me with his knowledge and experience with decks. I was concerned about City of Austin inspections, and he was very reassuring, pointing out that he talks to the inspectors by phone regularly. He booked a time to go over the engineering plan and the site, and again, I was very impressed when we met. He spoke of extensive experience in building decks, and asked questions about the site and the plan that reflected this. The quote was not cheap, but what is these days? My main concern was that they do the job properly and work with COA inspectors. Work started within a couple of weeks, and I was quite pleased with how the workers did their job. The only delay was to find an engineer to certify the footings before pouring the concrete. I had originally expressed concern about the durability of the support timbers, and Kit offered to coat them before laying the decking. Imagine my surprise when I found them painting the framing with high end professional oil based enamel! The only other delay was the week of the ice storm when Austin was closed for the duration. I was lucky to have family to remove the trees that fell on the lumber in the yard, because the next Monday they were back at work. Both the framing and final inspections went very smoothly and I am delighted with my new deck. I recommend Austin Outdoor Builders to anyone needing a deck.

I'll talk more about our full experience below, but a couple of months ago we had a terrible storm in our neighborhood and a very large tree (at least 25 feet tall) fell directly on our fence. Despite a direct hit, the fence stood firm with only a small dent in the cap board. Talk about quality work! More broadly, our experience was great. We worked with a super helpful person laying out the task who made some fantastic design suggestions (totally not on our radar) that we're really happy with. The work was done efficiently to mimimize the amount of time we had to keep our dog out of the yard. And when seasonal shifting made it impossible to open our gate, they came and fixed it months after the work was done. Great experience all around and would recommend to anyone.

We had to wait until we were finished with some other construction before we could do the fence and Ken and Ashley were very helpful and worked with us about shifting the schedule to accommodate our construction. They got right to work and even though Ken told me it would only take two days I didn't believe it could be done that quickly. Pricing was similar to another vendor, but Georgetown won out because they seemed better equipped to work with our restrictive HOA to navigate approval for a puppy picket fence. Their responsiveness and ability to fast-track paperwork gave us confidence--and they did deliver on that. We wanted a rackable puppy picket design, which most companies couldn't accommodate. After some searching, Ken (the owner) located a sample panel that seemed perfect. He showed it to us in person and said he could weld a fence to of that type for a small surcharge. We signed, paid a 50% deposit, calendared a date, and believed we were set. The very next day after paying our deposit, Ken informed us the sample panel was unavailable nationwide, with no new stock for months. Already under contract with him and having to let our dogs out on leash for a month, we reluctantly settled for his only other option: a standard rackable fence with puppy mesh. Ken did reduce the price to reflect the substitute panels, but charged full price for the puppy mesh. Given the frustration of losing out on the fence we'd waited for, comping or at least discounting the puppy mesh would have shown goodwill. Instead, we paid for something less than what we bargained for; a compromised design that's a challenge for yardwork. Our neighbors (also Ken's customers) have shared their displeasure with weed-eating their side of the puppy mesh with us on more than one occasion. To their credit, our installation went smoothly without a hitch and on time. Georgetown uses a blend of Portland and quick-set cement so the job is done in a single day. That worked for us, though some might prefer posts to set up overnight. By mid-afternoon, our fence was in place. Still, the end product was not without flaws. The fence looks good from a distance, but, up close, some welds are inconsistent, and a few welds are incomplete with visible holes. The gate hardware was bare minimum--no self-closing hinges, no key-locking latch. When I later asked about upgrading the gate hardware at my expense, Ken dismissed it as no longer possible and told me I didn't need it. Meanwhile, our neighbor's installer provided higher-quality hardware as standard. This was our first metal fence, and we relied heavily on Ken and his experience for guidance. In hindsight, it felt like we weren't offered the best options. There were also issues with our sprinkler system made obvious by the fence installation. Ken hinted before the contract that he could help if our builder misplaced irrigation heads relative to the property line, which happens often. Sure enough, our builder's irrigator missed the property line on several heads. When I called, Ken's only suggestion was to "call the builder yourself." It all worked out in the end, but the help implied up front was ultimately not what we would have hoped. After two months, rust was already showing at several welds. Nothing catastrophic, but disappointing because that means painting over the weld spots was inconsistent. I'll just touch it up myself rather than engage in another conversation. Maintenance is on me, sure, but after only three months? In the end, Georgetown delivered a decent fence at a fair price--just not the one we contracted or the quality expected. Scheduling was quick, and installation was efficient. However, the hit-or-miss welding and paint quality, budget-grade hardware, and limited assistance on sprinkler issues left us underwhelmed. Even their HOA connections ended up moot since the fence they ultimately installed didn't require pre-approval. And while Ken did adjust our project total to reflect materials actually used when the original materials fell through, paying full price for the less desirable puppy mesh solution we never wanted left us with a bad taste. Would I say don't use Georgetown Fence & Deck? No--they're competent, reliable, and can get the basic job done. But if you do, no matter who you go with: 1. Get written confirmation the materials you want are in stock before paying a deposit. 2. Do your research and nail down every detail up front in writing. Don't assume options will be available later. 3. Get promises in writing and in your contract. In short, for a functional standard metal fence installed quickly at a reasonable cost Georgetown Fence & Deck is fine. Look elsewhere if you desire higher quality workmanship or more flexibility in design and feature choices.
