We have known Roadrunner Decks since 2013, when we were in need of a major renovation of a large deck surrounding our 27K gallon swimming pool. We chose them because of their workmanship and details called out in their quote, like support structure. The original deck was built with all Wolmanized wood in 1992. We chose cedar for the renovation. Since then, Roadrunner Decks has also provided refinishing services with their team led by Roberto, who I have found to be very thorough and knowledgeable of the process and products to use. I knew that there was something to the process to obtain a long lasting, beautiful finish from refinishing antique wood with my father. But decks are a different beast due to the exterior elements. The process that Roadrunner Decks uses is simple and clean; all decks need to be free of all items in advance - furniture, plants, etc.: power spray, lightly sand horizontal surfaces, apply two coats penetrating oil stain - color of your choice, allow to dry for 2-3 days to be safe and cure before using. Our latest refinish of three deck sections (front entry, back top, back pool) took two (2) weeks total time. The results of their work can be seen in the pictures below. The finish will last ~2-3 years and will deteriorate depending upon weather conditions, sunlight exposure, and swimming pool water chemical exposure. Some sections that are shaded more can last longer but it is best to refinish the entire deck at once for a consistent color. Reverting this review back to five stars, as Byron's crew apparently came out and fixed the deck by (again apparently) replacing one badly warped post, which by itself must have been skewing everything else. I say apparently and "must have" because other than a brief text message exchange wherein I described the problem, there was zero communication. The deck looks nice overall, but there are multiple mistakes, poor communication, and a high price that makes me not recommend Roadrunner Decks to anyone. The deck work itself gets 4 stars, but the communication receives 1 star. The work included replacing the all-wood railing with a nicer black metal railing, a new gate to keep a small pet inside, replacing two posts that had some signs of rot at the bottom due to poor yard drainage and to sand/resurface the deck. The total cost was $4,800 for a 250 sqft deck. The problems: - Jett, the project manager, said we would have one final walk-through once after the work to ensure everything looked good. They guys finished the job, and I never heard from Jett. Communication with Jett has been extremely poor throughout this entire project. He is never quick to respond and can sometimes take days. - The initial gate was not sufficient in meeting my requirements to keep my pet inside. Roadrunner Decks did acknowledge that was an upfront requirement and corrected it, but it also meant they cut one of the posts for the first gate position by mistake. See the picture. - Two parts of the metal railing was loose and raddled. Jett said they would fix it, but they only fixed one and not the other. It looks like a simple stripped screw, from what I can tell. The fact that they just left it this way without any communication is inexcusable. - They did not clean up their mess in the yard when Jett said they would. A bucket of stain was left behind and now I have to dispose of it. Chunks of cut wood were left in the yard. I found some random screws lying around too. - When Jett came in to follow up, he kept talking about all of these other jobs they had lined up. It made it feel like I was just another job they were trying to get through to move on to the next. I personally don't care about the other jobs. I only care about the one I paid you $5k to do here. I simply can't recommend a company that made mistakes they didn't correct, had day-long poor communication, and just moved on to the next job without a care in the world for their final product. It makes it worse that Jett kept repeating they do great work and will make sure I'm happy with everything before the job is completed. It seems like most other reviewers worked with Byron Gueguen (owner) instead of Jett. If the communication was great, this could have easily been a 4 or 5-star review. read more

Byron Gueguen and his team just finished major repairs to our decades-old deck and did a fantastic job. We got another bid by a deck company, and they did not even notice (Byron did right away) that in addition to needing to replace some rotted boards and re-stain the deck, the entire deck was sloping a bit away from the side of the house. He went underneath to check and immediately discovered that 2 10' beams and 5 posts were rotted so badly that they had no contact with the deck - it's a miracle the entire deck had not collapsed. And the other company did not even notice this! (Admittedly, we didn't either but we rarely go out onto the deck, and it was not a huge slope - but a deck expert should have noticed this as Byron did.) The first crew, headed by Ephraim, worked for several days to replace all the rotted boards underneath and re-level the deck, as well as replacing multiple boards on the deck surface. They did a great job and left our yard spotless. Then Roberto and his crew came in to stain the deck with two coats and also did an exemplary job. I highly recommend Roadrunner Decks and Byron and his crews. Several of his crew (including Ephraim and Roberto I believe) have been with the company for 20 years, including working for Byron's father who started the company. We will definitely call Byron if we need more work done on our deck. read more

We recently hired Roadrunner Decks for our re-decking project. They did an amazing job and it completely surpassed our expectations. We kept the same footprint as the old deck and luckily were able to keep the same framing. Roadrunner's crew removed the old decking and privacy wall, leveled the frame, reinforced the existing beam and footers, added a new footer for the pergola we were adding, and added completely new decking, stairs, railing, privacy wall, and a beautiful 22' x 12' pergola. The result is stupendous and our deck is now usable in the triple-digit heat! Byron was very responsive to my emails and attentive to design details. His crew was fabulous and completed the demo and rebuild in about a week and a half. A couple of months later, we hired them to stain the deck and that also looks fantastic. Communication was a little more delayed for the staining bid, but not prohibitively so. Their staining bid was a little higher than others we got, but that's because they hand-roll/brush the stain and don't use a sprayer, so it takes longer. Both initial communication with Byron through the design phase was clear and helpful, and then the construction was well executed and the overall craftsmanship was superior to others. The lead carpenter was experienced and skilled in wood working, the stair design was a bit challenging, and he was able to complete per our design perfectly. My wife and I purchased our home with a 12x14 foot deck about three years ago, and building a larger deck was one of the bigger projects we have completed so far. I am pretty handy, and I wanted to do it myself. After designing, planning and estimating the deck costs in my spare time, we had an idea, but frankly I didn't know everything I needed to know. And then we added a time line to have the deck completed within a month, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to do that. It's now a month later, we have a beautiful 35x14 foot deck, and the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and completeness of it is outstanding. Every time I walk outside I am reminded that there is simply no way I could have built something this well myself on the first try. Even maybe second or third try. Byron and his father started the company, and Byron's team of workers are some of the most professional contractors I have ever met. My wife and I both work in IT, so we like email more than most people. I don't think I ever called Byron. Ever. We emailed, and he replied, usually within 2-4 hours, which for us was perfect. Byron came out, took measurements and got a feel for what we were looking for really quickly. He did a sketchup, and a few minor edits later, we had the deck where we wanted it. Byron quoted out the base work as well as some of the options we were adding separately so we understood the cost implications of some of our requests. Once approved, two of Byron's contractors (Javier and Omar) came by, and every day they were there when we woke up and didn't leave until it was too dark to work. Every single day we went outside and were amazed at the progress. The old deck was gone in two hours the first day. The new deck was framed in two more days. Half the decking one day, the rest the next. As someone who likes to consider himself handy, I was impressed, amazed, and in awe of their skills. Almost every time I saw something and asked myself why it was like that, hours later I would see how they were making it work and come together. Byron also dealt with all the permit and inspection appointments as well, so other than working with he and Javier that is all we had to do! We had a excellent experience with Roadrunner Decks! Our existing deck, built by a previous homeowner, was starting to fall apart and we knew we probably wouldn't be able to salvage it. We contacted a few companies for quotes on a new deck and Byron at Roadrunner Decks was the first to respond. We set up a time to meet and discuss the project we had in mind and Byron seemed to get exactly what we were wanted and was really great about keeping in our budget. After he drafted up a visual representation of what our deck would look like, we were excited to start the project. We could really tell that Byron and his crew were passionate about their profession and treated our deck as if it was their own being built. How am I the first to review this company on Yelp!? I just had THE best contracting experience ever! Michael Gueguen and his son, Byron own Roadrunner Decks and I read their Google reviews as well as the reviews from their website before requesting an estimate to have a deck built onto my house. This was to be a fairly quick process so I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to get this done in the small amount of time I was giving these guys to do it in... basically a week and a half before I headed out of town. This company far surpassed anything that I thought I'd be getting that's for sure! I wrote Michael on the weekend and by Tuesday we'd had a deal and his workers were in my yard. His team (2 guys - Acosta, who's been with the company for 20+ years & another man) would begin each work day by 7:30 - 8 am and work non-stop (of course with a small lunch break) and would leave my house around 8:00 pm every evening. It took them less than 6 days to build my deck and this was no small task! It even poured rain for 3 out of the 6 days but it never seemed to bother them. These two guys were polite, professional and always in good spirits. I've never had such a good experience with a contractor before. My backyard is GORGEOUS with this new addition. We'd decided to opt for the composite material, which was a bit pricier but I know will be completely worth the money. The rest of my neighbors who do have decks either have cedar or treated pine and you can tell they have their work cut out for them by having to sand, stain, and reseal their deck each year. If you have the extra $$, go with the composite - it's worth it. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this company. I am just so pleased to have picked these guys and have no regrets whatsoever. I'm looking forward to calling them back to have an awning built over the deck in the future (it wasn't in our budget at the moment). Thanks so much Michael & Byron! We used RoadRunner decks to re-stain and add an addition to our deck. Byron and his team get it - they know customer service and they execute perfectly. They provide excellent communication before, during and after the project - you won't wonder when they're coming out, or what work will be done first. Byron will call or email at every step and work with your schedule. They listen to what you want, but don't let you build something you'll hate. We got a lot of great advice and ended up with a really nice addition to our deck that makes it much more usable and looks 100% better. They do quality work. I really felt like the guys who were building our deck were building their deck. They took their time and made sure every last detail was perfect. Byron, Roberto, and the entire team were awesome. I have a deck, balcony, and a second deck where the previous owners had a hot tub. We had them out to sand down the deck, which is fairly large, and put down stain. Previous owners used that paint for old decks which never works or lasts. You can actually see the beauty of the wood now and it looks fantastic. They also used Perofin on the balcony and posts, which looks great and mainly just needed cleaning and a new coat. For the other deck, they removed it and built us a new deck in its place. Beautiful work all around and they did it working around some fairly challenging weather with rain and excessive heat. They also didn't hesitate to come out for touch ups at the end to make sure it was perfect. Very professional and great guys all around. I'm really unhappy that I have to mark these guys down with this rating, as I really liked them. They were understandably busy when I called and made an appointment for an initial consultation and quote. The appointment was set two weeks out, but that was fine. We weren't in a rush. Byron came out and was very friendly, measuring my deck and assuring me that the work I needed was very doable, and that he'd send the quote my way within the week, on a Tuesday or Thursday. We really wanted it done by the end of November, and I was promised that it could be. Well, Tuesday came and went, then so did Thursday. A week and a half later, I finally reach out to them to ask about the status of my quote. Byron responded a couple of days later. The quote seemed a tad on the high side, but still within budget, so I responded and said we would like to go ahead with the project, and to let me know what the next steps were. This was in October. It is now DECEMBER, and I never received a response from them. I already had to contact them once just to get the quote. The way I see it, a company that doesn't respond promptly to their clients obviously does not want my business. I am very disappointed that this company didn't even have the courtesy to say they were too busy to take my request at this time, or that they did not want to do the job even though they gave me a quote. Byron came to our house first to give us an estimate. This job was the complete renovation of our deck around our 22 year old pool, so it needed a couple of foundational fixes. Other deck builders would NOT estimate this part of the repair - they would only commit AFTER getting the job and lifting the top part of the deck. But Byron got down under the deck, looked around, and said not big problems - typical. He included these and any and all repairs in the bid. So we hired him and Roadrunner, also based upon the reviews. We are very pleased with the outcome. Beautiful! One other detail: Byron said that we would have none-other-than his father, Michael, supervising the crew. He not only did that, he was active daily on the job. It is beautiful and build to last another 20 years. We also had his refinish man apply TWP after the completion, icing on the cake! Michael and Byron have a great company, and they are wonderful people just to visit too. Hire them, and you will enjoy all.
