This rating reflects the combination of quality and price: if you want solid, quality work at a competitive price, I'm not sure you can do better than these guys. They completed a few different jobs for us: a deck resurface with Trex, added new deck railing, attached a pergola we had to the deck, and poured a separate stained/stamped concrete deck. They were helpful, flexible, and creative in thinking through options and dealing with obstacles. They bring a lot of experience and know-how and are great people to work with. Do not use Hometown decking for a large job of a cement patio or concrete staining. The owner Mike K does not stand by the workmanship of the 3rd party contractors he uses. If his "project manager" Jay gives you a quote please research yourself to ask additional questions that you as a customer would not think of. He just answers yes for the sale so we had documented issues from pergola repair to cement pour to a distasteful most horrible concrete stain! He does not communicate well when it comes to issues against his work. Just because you respond or have your secretary respond to appease us still doesn't mean you rectified the issues. Mike holds no accountability for sloppy work, no apologies for sending an inexperienced laborer to do the concrete staining as a last step for our $6500 project. The worker he sent out had no direction, not enough equipment didn't tape the sides of my house while spray stain and was very hard to communicate with due to language barrier. After the owner Mike was informed the hour after the guy left.. later on that NIGHT he passively aggressively tells me ( via email) that me as the customer was being rude, complained each time something was done and the infamous statement of "I've been doing this for 20 years". Hometown Decking, in my case those years of qualifications aa joke because in this industry you should not be proud of the work you allowed to be left on my new 450 sq ft concrete patio with no refund or an apology for the inconvenience. His concrete staining pics on reviews are not from the guy who stained my patio! I asked for that guy after you send the same guy out the 2nd time to fix his mistakes. You are never to important to not put the customer first and to inspect the work somebody is doing under your name. No rebuttal is necessary and will not be validated. We had a stamped patio poured by Hometown Decking which turned out amazing! I loved how honest Mike and the team were about what could and couldn't be done--the worst thing that can happen with projects like this is that someone tells you "yes" to everything and doesn't do any of it. This absolutely didn't happen with Home Decking--they told me upfront if they thought something wouldn't look good or wouldn't be possible and I truly appreciated it. They provided a very fair price (I got several quotes from other places) after Mike came out and measured everything and discussed the specifics of what we wanted. Mike then patiently answered my million questions which was awesome. The team was also very accommodating even after the patio was poured. For example a sprinkler didn't get capped off and we noticed several weeks later that there was water pooling on the side. Angel and his team came and dug under the patio to cap it off. It's great to see a company stand by their work even after the fact! The only thing I struggled with was scheduling-first they put me on the schedule for a pour before I even decided to use them, then when I did decide to go with them, they put me on the schedule but told me they may or may not pour on the scheduled day. Minor issue, but just something to expect and be okay with. To me, it was fully worth it to get a great patio and honest, professional opinions. Hometown decking Mike and his team transformed my backyard from a place I rarely occupied into an outdoor oasis that I use more than my own living room. I never imagined all the options I'd be given concerning the shape of my patio, texture, stain, and pergola. We contracted with Hometown Decking as part of a house renovation and this is my favorite place to be even though my entire house is now transformed. They were very flexible with our requests and we had quite a few requests. My home renovation became a family affair. My mother dealt with vendors and contractors more than I did, so I could be free to focus on my day job. When we found out my brother was flying in from NYC we asked if the lumber could be delivered early as we wanted to utilize my brother's time to stain the cedar before the pergola was constructed. They were extremely helpful with getting us the wood before schedule. They got to know my mother and that she had an end date to being in Austin and made a special effort to finish both the pergola and the staining of the concrete before she had to leave. Sitting beneath the pergola with her after three months of labor was the best moment of the home renovation process. After 30 days the cola stain was added and only enhanced the beauty of my new patio. However, that night it sprinkled. I didn't think it would be a problem but the next day I noticed little dots on the stain that wasn't protected by the pergola. When I reached out to Hometown Decking they were very responsive and came back as soon as the chance of rain had passed. Mike saw the problem and restained  and resealed the entire patio.  This time they moved all the furniture for me, as my family was gone at this point. The result was breathtaking. The cola color was even richer. It has been rained on many times after that and there has been no effect on the stain. I thank Jay, Angel, Mike, Mary Catharine and everyone else who was involved in this project. I now have a beautiful and comfortable area to entertain many guests or just curl up with a good book and my dog who is so happy I am spending time outside with her. read more

Alright! This is a review I am very happy to write. Hometown Decking has been an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish on this project. From my initial contact, preliminary quote, in person quote, scheduling, billing, and the job itself, it could not have gone any more smoothly. This entire group has been very communicative and accommodating during this process. We were able to discuss a moderately complex accommodation needed for my construction and get it worked out very quickly. When the two days of construction came (one for concrete footings, one for the patio cover installation), the crew was very quick, professional, courteous and highly skilled. They did an amazing amount of work in just two days. Now I have an addition on my house that I can enjoy all summer long. I contacted this business for a second story deck repair. They scheduled someone to come out a few days later. The project manager was an hour late, which was fine but a heads up would have been nice. They said I would receive the estimate within 2-3 days. I called several times and never heard back... Three weeks later I still had not received the estimate. I called again they said they would send it over and never did. If it wasn't a project they could take on they could have just said so instead of postponing my project, super flakey. read more

if you expect a clean, attractive and smooth edge~finished concrete deck, don't use this company. We just built a 900 square foot deck and have concrete splatter along the entirety of the foundation of our house. it was splattered onto our paint and windows as well. Although all of the employees were polite, the quality of work was subpar. When you spend 20K on a project, you don't expect to spend hours with a chisel and mallet attempting to scrape the edges yourself. Cleaning my own windows was not a problem, but I will likely spend more money to repaint now. read more

Okay, so I dragged my feet so much in writing this review because I'm a busy lady, but I finally had to sit down and do this because Hometown Decking should be promoted more. Sure, I've given their number and website address to tons of people who have raved about my patio after seeing it firsthand or in photos, but I have been slack at getting the word out beyond my circle of friends, so I'm here to rectify that. Mike and his crew did an exceptional job with my patio and pergola. The communication was clear and quick, and they completed the work amazingly fast. I had heard so many stories of contractors taking forever, so I figured it would take a long time, but they prepped the area on one day, poured and stamped the cement the next day, and about two weeks later, after the cement cured, they finished it up in one day. I couldn't believe the turnaround time, especially after talking to people who'd had numerous concerns over timelines with their contractors. Mike even submitted my Homeowners Association paperwork for me. Their outstanding customer service, quality work, and quick turnaround are the reasons for my glowing review. Communication with the company itself was good - quick responses. And the finished deck is working for us. However, the contractors they hire do not shine a good light on the company and they should really look into improving that. After the first day, we came home to trash in the yard - not like construction stuff, like empty soda cans, and food wrappers. The trash was inside the frame of the deck. The second day, completion day, I looked under the deck, which is enclosed to the underneath and that trash was still there! They just put the wood over it, so I called and they came and removed the trash (I couldn't access it, without removing pieces of the decking, and why should I have had to?). Fine, they fix the problem. Months later we came to realize they hit a water line with a post, when we saw water coming from under the deck. They didn't even notify us, which we could have fixed it right away. Now we have no idea which post hit a line, so it'd require pulling everything up to find out, and again why should I have to do that. So, good thing we have a deck now, since our yard is sometimes flooded. They weren't the cheapest company we researched, so this is really disappointing - I'm re-angered every time the yard floods. Make sure you ask questions about the 3rd party contractors hired for your decking and good luck! read more

I sought out 6 different deck/pergola builders for an estimate on a deck and pergola build. I was hoping Hometown would be comparable because they were closer to me, and had pretty good reviews, plus I liked what I saw on their gallery of pictures. Initially I thought Hometown made a mistake in their quote because it was twice as high as the next highest quote. This was because the deck and pergola were quoted separately (along with a quote for concrete vs deck, which I never asked for), but had the same price for each. Hence, I thought maybe they mistakenly meant the deck and pergola were to be together. Apparently not. I confirmed with a person who called me on whether or not I received their estimate, and if I wanted to move forward. So, yes, they wanted to charge me 2x the amount of other estimates. One of the very few places that can't schedule online. Played phone tag for over a week to get an estimate and then finally, when I got them on the phone, they told me that they can't do afternoons. So I am overall happy with the covered patio that Hometown Decking built for my house. The wood they used was all cedar except the T&G which I knew beforehand. The patio looks solid and will last for years to come. There were a few minor construction issues that I had such as pieces of the T&G being nailed into nothing thus only being held up by a couple of nails and putting in a board with a notch on the end where it meets the house causing a gap. Those issues along with the poor communication I received during most of the build process is why I took off the one star. Communication isn't Hometown Decking's strong suit. From not informing us of the actual construction day to not showing up to fix the above issues I mentioned; even though a date was scheduled, I am unsure if I can fully recommend them. Going back on the minor issues, which never got fixed. After Hometown Decking came out to do the final walkthrough and me pointing out the issues that I had. They said they would have their crew back out to adding in some edging for the patio. I schedule those repairs to be done in two weeks since their crew was going to be in my area for another job. On that day, they never show up. I call the office, talked to their office manager, Amy, and she assured me they will be there later in the day. I get home from work and nothing has been done. No call that they would have to reschedule or anything. It's been 2 weeks and I still haven't received a call to reschedule. I'm guessing once the get paid, then they are not obligated to fix any issues in their work. One last thing to add, their crew left lots of nails, screws, cut bolts, and wood shards around the patio. I have a five year old and was worried about her stepping on them along with my wife and I. In the end, my wife and I are pretty happy with the covered patio they made. It was just a frustrating experience with their lack of communication and not following up. *UPDATE* After posting this review, Hometown Decking reached out to me and the owners, Mike O'Brian and Mike Koch, immediately scheduled time the next day to come out and complete the trim work on my patio. They apologized for the breakdown in communication and took full responsibility which I fully appreciated. Now my patio is complete and looks great! read more

I had a 500 SF concrete slab poured behind my house by Hometown Decking. I was given a fair price, for outstanding work. Mike's crew of 4 showed up one morning to analyze the site. In almost one day, they set the forms, poured a base of gravel, poured all of the concrete, and cleaned up after themselves. Some of the hardest working people I've ever seen. The overall quality of wood and build quality were excellent. Terrific guy and I would bet his prices are very competitive as well. VERY honest. He did every single thing we asked him to and communicated ANY change - even as far as to ask if the shingles he purchased, which were brown, needed to be returned so he could purchase grey shingles to match our existing roof. They donate a portion of every job to a wellness and well-digging non-profit in Ethiopia in addition to volunteering their own time in Ethiopia several times per year. Please hire this company - you WILL NOT be disappointed.
