I spoke with Oscar about replacing my patio cover. I chose another company to do the job, so my review is only based on my communications with Oscar. First with the good...Oscar was very responsive, which I appreciated. He came out to give me an estimate and was on time. He was very friendly and likeable. My concerns were over his professionalism and high-pressure tactics. First, I wanted the wood painted and he said no and "we are not painters" with a little laugh. He eventually agreed to it. Another concern was that he did not want to put his estimates in writing until the contract was drawn up. He was showing me contracts he had with a couple of his customers pointing out they were $50K and $80K deals. I did not feel comfortable with him showing me other customer's contracts. Multiple times he referred to these deals pointing the dollar amounts, which seemed odd I thought. Here's the final straw. He did not want to leave without a commitment. After he took his measurements, answered all my questions, and gave me multiple estimates, I thanked him and said I would give it some thought, but he didn't want to leave. July 2, 2024 Oscar Salas of A 1 Contracting Services shows up at my door to discuss my interest in replacing a rotting elevated deck off the kitchen at the back of the house. The existing "structure" was a 5-sided polygon with railing and three steps down to the backyard. In an effort to reduce the cost , I mentioned to Oscar a scaled back version consisting of a simple rectangle. The associated square footage would drop by approximately 20% or so. Additionally, I asked Mr. Salas if he could possibly straighten out my 2 car garage which was oddly and stubbornly, leaning to the east. We can't say enough amazing things about Oscar (and DJ!). I found Oscar on Yelp & we are SO happy we called him. First thing-he answers the phone. This communication carried through the months of work he put in for us. Oscar was always easy to contact and he was in constant communication. He was very up front on pricing and asked me what I thought the project would cost. He said he likes to make sure that people are realists and budgets aren't way off base. After we talked about the project, he promptly came over, talked us through everything, then left to bid out the job. He called a few hours later and said we were going to be over budget, but he was happy to keep working on the bid, but didn't want to waste anyone's time since he knew our $ amount. We were so impressed with him, we told him to continue with the bid. Once he completed the bid, he came back over to work through all the paperwork, the plans, and the budget with us again. After we signed and did a down payment (his payment requirements made total sense to us) he got to work w permits. This is where things started to slow him down. The city was extremely hard to work with on permits and was very little help in telling us what exactly was needed. We were impressed that Oscar went above and beyond to talk to multiple people, engineers, and visit the city offices over and over until it was figured out. I think many people would of said "forget it" and left us to figure it out. This gave us plenty of time to find about 4 more projects to ask him to complete while he was here, so our initial project pretty much doubled, if not tripled. After all was permitted, Oscar and DJ got to work and they were speedy, always told us how things were coming along, estimated time of them being done, and were very personable the whole time. The work was BEAUTIFUL and exactly what we had in mind. You can tell they take pride in their work and don't rush. I was especially impressed by the rounding out of all the edges on the wood. Contacting Oscar and his contracting business was the best decision I could've made. I had been wanting to install a patio cover since I moved into my house two years ago, and had been saving enough money for it. When I checked yelp for contractors, A1 contracting services was one of the first results that popped up. While there weren't a lot of reviews at the time, every single review was extremely positive and gave glowing recommendations towards Oscar and his company. I was instantly convinced that this was the best choice to go with. Oscar was so quick to answer my yelp message. Within 30 minutes of sending it, he called back to discuss what it was I wanted to do. I reached out looking for some help to hang a curtain rod. One curtain rod. Asked him to hang it so the curtains would cover the window completely and not have light come thru on the sides. He educated me on headers when building this newer home but still placed the rod 1.5 inches inside the desired area. He could have just moved it out a little further. Simply put A1 Contracting Services was remarkable. Let me start with the fact it has taken me a few years to even consider spending the money to update/repair my decks. After a few proposals from some other deck contractors, I elected to just do the work myself because I could have purchased a new car for simply removing and installing new 2x6s.
