We were going to repair our old deck, but when code compliance showed up, we had to apply for a building permit. When we went looking for a contractor to build the new deck, we found Austin Outdoor Builders through their listing on Yelp and their website. Kit called me within a couple of days of my email, and really impressed me with his knowledge and experience with decks. I was concerned about City of Austin inspections, and he was very reassuring, pointing out that he talks to the inspectors by phone regularly. He booked a time to go over the engineering plan and the site, and again, I was very impressed when we met. He spoke of extensive experience in building decks, and asked questions about the site and the plan that reflected this. The quote was not cheap, but what is these days? My main concern was that they do the job properly and work with COA inspectors. Work started within a couple of weeks, and I was quite pleased with how the workers did their job. The only delay was to find an engineer to certify the footings before pouring the concrete. I had originally expressed concern about the durability of the support timbers, and Kit offered to coat them before laying the decking. Imagine my surprise when I found them painting the framing with high end professional oil based enamel! The only other delay was the week of the ice storm when Austin was closed for the duration. I was lucky to have family to remove the trees that fell on the lumber in the yard, because the next Monday they were back at work. We sought out AOB to replace a chainlink fence around our yard with an updated wood fence about 18 months ago. All around, our experience was wonderful, and they do high quality work. I'll talk more about our full experience below, but a couple of months ago we had a terrible storm in our neighborhood and a very large tree (at least 25 feet tall) fell directly on our fence. Despite a direct hit, the fence stood firm with only a small dent in the cap board. Talk about quality work! More broadly, our experience was great. We worked with a super helpful person laying out the task who made some fantastic design suggestions (totally not on our radar) that we're really happy with. The work was done efficiently to mimimize the amount of time we had to keep our dog out of the yard. We had a fence to refinish, a gate that would always break, and another that was misaligned due to a bad post. Dylan and his crew worked tirelessly to re-post and fix those gates. They had to try several latches and several solutions to fight the expansion from the rain and now the gates are perfect. We also had them build a deck from Trex composite. This was a tricky build because we needed it flush with a concrete slab that was barely an inch and a half from the ground but that didn't stop these guys. Once they commit to doing something, even something tricky, they get it done. We had them put posts for a pair of sail shades on that deck, and the shades arrived later, they had no problem coming back to install the hardware for the shades for us. All of that while juggling the random weather we had in September/October, Dylan and David were truly committed to our project. If something didn't look quite right (which was rare), they fixed it. After an initial frustrating experience, Dylan and his team stepped up to make things right. Apparently, when our fence/deck was being built out originally, our foreman on the job got sick leaving us with two new workers to finish the job. These new guys didn't definitely didn't live up to the standards set by Dylan and his team (they no longer work there it seems). Anyway, once I alerted Dylan and his team about the issues, they were quick to get on the phone and make sure a team was sent to my home as soon as possible to repair and replace the issues at no cost to me. They ended up fixing a gate, correctly applying trim, adjusting some misplaced boards, and reapplying the stain correctly. Seeing his team do it the second time gave me complete confidence that their build quality is exceptional. I am very pleased with the quality of their work and would recommend them to others. It wasn't five stars due to the issues I had prior to getting everything fixed up but, overall, I am very happy with my new deck and would gladly vouch for Dylan and his team any day. read more

Just wanted to say this was my first time doing a project for a fence of this size but with Dylan's help he made this project easy. We had to replace a fence we had here at my job that enclosed a playground around 456 feet of fence needed replacing. The fence was here before I started and was beginning to roll up at the bottom and become unsafe for the kiddos. I contacted Dylan he replied immediately and scheduled a time to come out to take a look at the fence within 2 days of contacting him. After walking the grounds with him he told me the job could be done and in a shorter time frame and less expensive than some of the other vendors I had been looking at for this fence project. He started work within a week of me contacting him on yelp and began taking out posts, unfortunately during this time Austin had heavy downpours for an entire week slowing down the work of the fence. Dylan and his crew still came out here and worked as much as they were able to when the showers would slow down to ensure this project would not become too delayed. We hired Austin Outdoor Builders to have a black chainlink fence with privacy slats installed. I was told that the job would take 2 days to complete and that they would be out in 1.5 weeks to begin. It was supposed to be installed on 11/2, but they rescheduled. On the 4th, they installed the posts. Then they came back on the 7th to put up the fence. Today is the 15th, and the privacy slats still have not been added . We have called everyday without a response. At this point, I do not know if I need to hire someone else to finish the job or if they will show up a month from now. About a year ago, I used this company for a cattle panel fence, and they have gone down hill since. Great way to treat repeat business. read more

These guys are so competent and professional it made me cry inside comparing to other fly-by-night "business operators" I had the misfortune of using in the past. First off, NO SUBCONTRACTORS. Yeah, from the people who come out for initial survey, build the quote, and then build the fence, they all know it's not just a "take your money" gig, they're all responsible for delivering to exceed expectations. Second, if during the job there's no problems, but at the end they notice that maybe, just maybe, you need a second set of stairs because the height of the deck ends up being just a little too high... I'd give them 6 stars if that was possible. We put in a fence around our entire yard, with one automated gate over our driveway and a second smaller gate on the other side of the house. AFB was great to work with and I certainly recommend that you use them. They did a great job on our fence! As an example, there were parts of the fence that really needed some craftsmanship to make it look nice (near trees and such) and they took the time to do that. They made sure everything was done right and even did extra work that was beyond the initial plan (double-sided parts of the fence) and did that for free. The crew was also extremely nice and friendly, and were very careful to not upset a neighbor (e.g., they did all the fence construction on our yard vs possibly stepping onto the neighbor's property). AOB did an awesome job on my fence. Dylan was great during the quote and pre-project phase and Paul, the lead on site, was very meticulous and took care of all the small details. Any concern I had he took care off and he was excellent at keeping me updated with his progress. This was a tough job and I was not the easiest customer but they definitely delivered. We went with steel posts, horizontal pickets with a 1/2" gap, and Paul welded 3 metal gate frames on site. I had the pleasure of getting to work with Dylan and the team on a couple projects between June and July 2018. A section of my deck was demolished when a line of storms came through in late May and my tree toppled on top of it. Called and spoke with Dylan, he was super quick to respond and was out the next day to look at my deck.
