The best bakery in Bishop hands down!! You must get the cowgirl cookies. I don't know what's in them but it's like you mixed apricots and condensed milk together into cookie form. My only regret about traveling to Death Valley was not buying more of those cookies. People always talk about Schat's, but if you are used to the standards of bay area bakeries, this is the place where you must go. Checked out this place in the early morning as a result of the Other Famous Bakery not serving breakfast. I seriously needed something cheesy with bacon sausage and eggs on a fresh fluffy bagel. We both ordered after the enormous line, and were shocked at the price of our meals. It seemed like there was no ticketing system, the first employees taking your order just started getting your items and told the cashier what the items were. After the chaos we realized that they charged us double, the cashier blankly looked at us and just said "well is that what you ordered?" after reciting our meal. Yes, we explained, but you charged us double, we don't need 4 meals, just our 2. After unapologetically correctly her mistake in the register, she took our payment without another word. The food was excellent and fresh, but I forgot to get some salsa to wet the somewhat dry breakfast sandwich. Everything worked together perfectly and our pastry was light and decadent. 5 stars! This quaint bakery has the best moist yet crispy on the outside scones. If you are up early in the morning you can see everyone working at 5am to prepare the morsels of amazingness. The earlier you get here the better so that you can have the best selection. Don't forget to grab some cookies. What a gem. Stopped for sandwiches on our way home from Mammoth. The Mt. Turkey on sourdough and the italian on baguette were so delicious. The ingredients were so fresh and went so well together. The service was friendly and fast for make to order. Had great conversation with some locals. Overall cant wait to eat here again. The bagel and lox i saw a few people get looked awesome and we regret not picking up some pasteries. read more

This is a small bakery a block off Main Street on Lagoon St. They offer a handful of hot drinks and a cooler full of cold options. We stopped in for a drink and ended up leaving with mini scones and a bag of chips. We tried the chocolate/orange, lemon, and cinnamon raisin scones. All were good and only 50 cents. The Chai Latte I ordered was from the carton, mixed with milk, and warmed. Not what I expecting but still good. The service was slow but worth the wait. The woman who helped us was super sweet and happy to help. Next time I am in town and in the mood for a scone I will stop here. read more

WOW - Unbelievably good...went for the pies (I know they don't really do pies except the occasional apple etc around Thanksgiving so not sure where I read that) but each time we went there we were so distracted with all the delectable goodies and their phenomenal sandwiches, we forgot all about the nonexistent pies! ;) The Sandwiches were simply delightful - ate 'em at Mono Lake followed by a couple mini GBB cookies (they come with to my joy and surprise). Pretty much a perfect afternoon. :) So tasty a second sandwich stop was mentally added to our travels... The Bread -- ahhmayzing! Cowgirl Cookies - know they're a fan favorite (for good reason) and I definitely enjoyed 'em along with the Choc Chip (a classic!) and the Molasses (mmmm) but then there's those DELECTABLY SAVORY Rosemary Shortbread Cookies and those DIVINE Lemon Cookies - OMG!!! Croissants - lest not forget the croissants - Parisien in texture and freshness (no small feat) - by the time we arrived, they were out of the other varieties, but chocolate croissant was choco-heaven while the veggie croissant was so good, I took one for the road! Coffee - the best we had in the Eastern Sierras...caffeinated perfection! On my second - or was it third time back into the shop, I nearly cut in front of 3 people...seeing all those cookies and treats, I nearly lost my mind. But social decorum finely took hold of me - I properly apologized and let the fine folk ahead order first and all was right with the world. Embarrassing but not an isolated event I'm told. Happens all the time the local customers said with a smile. :) So yes, we're a fan - and next time we're in this neck of the woods, we'll definitely be back...in fact on this short 4 day trip from Death Valley to Twin Lakes, Convict Lake and back home to LA, we made a point of stopping in Bishop (specifically 169 Lagoon Street) TWICE..three times if you count my second visit on the same day. Honestly it is not the most amazing bakery, but it is my favorite in Bishop. Here you can avoid the craziness of Schat's, and they do make their goods fresh each morning. The breakfast bagel is really good, although the ordering menu is pretty confusing if you haven't have your morning coffee yet. The scones are the best here. We've been going to Schat's bakery for years, but then a friend of mine recommended Great Basin Bakery and I'm so glad they did. The service was excellent. Even though they don't offer gluten-free bread for their sandwiches they have a great al-a-carte option which puts the tuna, turkey, or egg salad on a bed of greens instead. My husband had the turkey salad and said it was amazing. My egg salad sandwich was very flavorful and the sandwich was excellent in size. They are a small sized shop but we didn't have any trouble finding seating. Seems like a place for locals. After our meal we got a bag of their delicious Sierra Mud cookies (which are gluten free!) to-go. Will definitely stop back through here during our next trip North. read more

Even though they got my order wrong (I asked for bacon and egg, got sausage and egg - because it was still very good: i only dedcuted one star) it was still the best bagel I have ever had. Best mushroom Brie soup I've ever had. Best potato soup I've ever had. Great fresh French bread, batards, cookies, and quiche. They take orders for their products for pickup tomorrow (they frequently sell out). The sandwiches (Mount Tom Turkey) are very good. The coffee is good. The iced tea is okay. I think they have more artificial sweeteners than anyone else. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and fast. Raymond's Secret Sandwich Stud moved to Great Basin. He's still amazing, but his selections are significantly reduced. The prices are a little above national average, but very good for the area. The batards and French baguettes are sinful. The parking is a challenge (give up and go park in the city parking lot: Warren St between Line and Lagoon), but the baked goods are your reward. read more

I should have stuck with my original plan of ordering the breakfast croissant sandwiches because the regular sandwiches fell short. I liked that the "muffeletta" (I've seen this commonly spelled two different ways, but this spelling is neither) and "classic ham and provolone" both had plenty of meat. I also liked the olive tapenade in the muffuletta which caused me not to miss the traditional vegetables omitted from the sandwich. The server recommended their sourdough bread that was almost like plain white bread - lacking strong flavor, chewy crust, and heavy texture of fine sourdough. The "classic ham and provolone" contained a thick layer of mayonnaise. Ever see "Undercover Brother"? Instead of mayonnaise oozing out the side of the sandwich, Great Basin's application of mayonnaise disintegrated the flaccid white bread and rose like a mayonnaise mud puddle in the top of the sandwich. WOW! I have been coming to Bishop for years for business but have never been to the bakery. I definitely rectified that error today. First, I appreciate that they were open today and taking precautions to keep customers safe. I wasn't sure what to expect as they are on a limited menu and other restaurants I got takeout from this week were serving some pretty sad food in order to keep their doors open- if you can't do it right why do it! Not only was I pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of our lunch but it was downright AMAZING! We had the Mt Tom Turkey and Roast Beef sandwiches both on sourdough- the bread was pretty thin and got wet fast but the portions of meat, veggies, cheese and sauce were great- the quality was super and I could definitely eat their every day- in fact all ready planning a visit next week. I highly recommend this place - I think you will find there is something for everyone and you won't be disappointed read more

What an amazing find! We found this bakery on our way to June Lake and needed bread for our fishing and hiking sandwiches. We walked in on a Sunday afternoon and saw so many things. Scones, cinnamon rolls, biscotti, cookies, brownies, and bread. We bought a loaf of Asiago cheese sourdough and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was perfect! The next day we used the sourdough and wow, wow, wow! It was amazing. We could taste the Asiago cheese in every bite and it was not overwhelming at all. We used the whole loaf. Delicious... Am I getting it across to you this place is bombalicous?? We stopped again on our way back home and had their egg and bacon croissant sandwich. It was yummy. Even large! We bought a couple more loaves of bread too! They use local eggs, when available, and serve Black Sheep Coffee. Now this place is not huge and it can be busy. We overheard that the line in the morning goes out the door. I can certainly see why. Lots of nice employees too, so it's a great local business. We will always come back when in the area. Forget about Schats, this is the best bakery in Bishop (and one of the best in all of California)! Fresh baked good - breads, bagels, cookies (the Cowgirl cookie is amazing), yummy cinnamon buns, scones, soup, pies, etc. But that's not all! The sandwiches at Great Basin are amazing! Their turkey salad is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Fresh roasted turkey, cranberries, onion, apricot, and other goodies make this sandwich unique. Their BLT is made with mahogany smoked bacon and you get a lot of it, not just two slices. I have had the roasted red pepper gouda and mushroom brie soups and they are rich, creamy and flavorful. A little difficult to find as the front door doesn't face Main St. I'm so happy I found this bakery. When passing through Bishop on our way to Reno, we need lunch but we don't want to stop for a sit down meal so unfortunately, Taco Bell bean burritos have had to suffice. GBB has a delicious vegetarian sandwich with pesto, avocado, lots of spinach and cheese on homemade bread, all ready in their refrigerator case. I also tried a vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (excellent) and my boyfriend had a pizza bagel (excellent as well). They have basic coffee and tea plus other bottled drinks (kombucha). I thought the prices were very reasonable (sandwich, cookie, bagel and two drinks for $14). They take cards and the employees are friendly and helpful. Really good bakery. Surprisingly good. I'm from the east coast, where we do bagels right. This place really could hold it's own with their bagels. My husband got the jalapeño bagel and we both found it to be really good. The bread was perfect and the jalapeño flavor wasn't too overpowering. I also got a chocolate croissant. I think it had an entire bar of chocolate in the middle. Very good and the croissant was flaky and buttery. Felt like I should workout after eating it though.
