I've ordered take out for lunch and the first time I thought it was a bit pricey. I got the veggie rolls, hot and sour soup and a stir fry mix. All good but for almost $20 I was a bit taken back. When I went in to pick up my order I grabbed a menu and then saw the lunch specials. OK - much better $7 got me an app, half soup and an entree. Again, loved the veggie roll, H&S and the tofu stir fry. I am not so crazy about the fake meat but may give it a whirl again. I went here with my militant vegan friends to enjoy some cruelty-free dining last night. It was an interesting experience. The TEA was awesome. I forgot to ask what kind it was. I had a couple cups. My miso soup should have been hotter (I think they forgot about it), and was loaded with seaweed. I will give it a shot again, no seaweed. Upon fellow yelper Allix T's recomendation, I went with the sweet and sour tofu chicken fingers. I'm going to be eating this again soon here at my house, as I brought most of it home. SO RICH. Like, ridiculously rich. The veggies were fresh and crisp, the fake chicken was tasty, but the sauce these things were floating in was ridiculous. Straight up corn syrup I swear. It was so thick and there was so much of it. It was cool and intense for a few bites, but I couldn't deal with it after a while. I didn't even come close to getting half of it packed away before I was full of sugary, tofuey goodness. I came here for a large family dinner. They were able to accommodate a large group of 10 of us. The menu was overwhelming with tons of options for vegetarians! Unfortunately all of the items ended up looking pretty much the same, vegetable and wheat gluten imitation meat in a generic sauce. I understand that this may be a novel concept in Boston, but coming from California which is a hub of Asian and Vegan cuisines, this place came up short. Notice: I am not vegetarian or vegan. I eat vegetarian food quite frequently, since I find it just as delicious as anything else, given the proper preparation. My vegetarian background also comes from eating temple food very often; my best friend is a discerning vegetarian. The food was flavorful, given no animal products were present in any of the foods. I had black pepper seitan, and my friend had sweet and sour tofu chicken tenders. The chicken tenders were mostly breading, with a sliver of tofu in the center, which I wasn't quite a fan of. However, my friend enjoyed the texture, and that's what matters in the review. As for my dish, it was tasty, but incredibly oily and sweet. Considering the dish was black pepper seitan, I was expecting more of a savory, peppery taste. I came here before my new dietary restrictions appeared, but am not quite sure I can come back considering the amount of sugar in both dishes. Recently added Grasshopper to my rotation of takeout restaurants as I've limited my consumption of animal products. Can't speak highly enough about the value of the food you receive. Their lunch special is especially unbeatable - amazing prices for the quality and quantity of the food you receive. Standouts have been the fried rice and tofu dishes that I've tried so far. They cook the tofu really well so that it's slightly crispy and flavorful. Would highly recommend trying this place for vegans and non alike! read more

OMG delicious! Incredibly helpful and patient staff. We had a group of 6 and we did family style. Shared apps, soups for everyone and 3 shared dishes. We just ordered from the server suggestions and everyone LOVED everything. My favorite is the hot & sour soup as well as the wonton. Three stars for being one if the very few only vegetarian restaurants around. We ordered assorted appetizer platter which was very good served with three different dips. For the main course we ordered crispy noodles. Now regarding this I would say they tasted better than average but too huge serving size made it look unappetizing. "Where the animals live to tell it all" That phrase really sums up the food at Grasshopper because everything is vegan (i.e. made without meat despite menu claims to the otherwise). We enjoyed our meal here, especially the vegan classic of "the No Name" (essentially General Gao's chicken) on the house specialties menu. Interior is very green reflecting the name of the restaurant and the theme of the food. There was plenty of seating for our large group, and vegans can enjoy strolling next door for vegan ice cream at FoMu on what appears to be the vegan corner of Boston. Service was top notch with friendly waitstaff constantly refilling water and checking in on us. A solid choice for when vegan friends visit town. read more

Veggie lover paradise (that meat lovers /omnivores really like too). Vegan Chinese and some Vietnamese dishes in really big portions for a very decent price. I love and often crave the eggplant special dish and the sweet and sour tofu. Everything I've had from here is great. I even know someone who had Grasshopper cater their wedding! The only negative is that everything that is labeled spicy isn't spicy and if you ask for something to be spicy it also is never spicy. You get the choice of brown or white rice and they give every table a hot pot of jasmine green tea. I've been meaning to try Grasshopper for a while, and finally made it for lunch their today, with a Vegan friend of mine. The food was delicious and we both left stuffed. I had #85, Stir-Fried Assorted Vegetables with Vegi-Shrips and my friend had #69, Spicy Black Peppers and Garlic Beef-Style Seitan. My friend took most of her entree home because the portion was so huge. I could have made a 2nd meal out of my portion as well, but I was pretty hungry and didn't take anything home. We also had an appetizer roll that my friend ordered (I'm not sure which kind). My friend let me try some of her Beef-Style Seitan and it was delicious. I couldn't believe how much it tasted like beef. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that our waitress had a bit of a language issue (as has been mentioned in other reviews). I had a coupon from entertainment.com that was a "buy one get one entree free, up to $8" and it took a while to explain how much should come off the bill. She got the amount right in the end though. My friend told me they also host $10 all you can eat buffets once a month on Sundays. I plan on definitely returning to Grasshopper and will recommend it to others. read more

I'm a bit conflicted as I write this [from my second time going here]. Although I love the food [the no-name is really great], the atmosphere of the whole place...is a bit of a downer and unfortunately unimpressive. It's sparsely decorated aside from the green walls and random green vined paintings, and last time I was here [about 2 or 3 years ago] I could have sworn there were embroidered table cloths with grasshoppers on them...but there wasn't anything this time. The place was super quite with no music and with only two or three tables out of maybe 15 during early lunch on a Saturday...it was a bit strange... Don't get me wrong, the food was really good. I love that there are so many options and that it's all soy-based, but the awkward quietness and lack of ... decor makes this place a bit "eh" to bring someone to I feel like...Also...my friend and I were freezing the entire time. I'm not crazy about this place. There aren't very many gluten free options and they won't make substitutions which I don't like I wanted to order this noodle soup that says it comes with buckwheat noodles- I don't like those and asked if I could have rice noodles instead - the waitress said no- and that they are good, but , I don't like them so that doesn't matter to me. I didn't argue I just picked something else. I ordered the hot and sour soup- menu says it's spicy ( as it should be traditionally) it was not spicy what so ever and reminded me of tomato soup. I know what it should taste like as it is my most favorite soup-- I've had it at a number of different places in the US and out-- just surprising to me. My Thai in Chinatown makes it correctly-- Where was the spice? Or is it bland because mostly white Americans go there and can't handle it? I'm not sure. But that was sad. (Places that do it correctly are- Zhu in Arlington- that's the best one, Veggie Fun in Providence, My Thai in Chinatown. All of those places will also make substitutions with their noodles or ingredients. ) I had another soup called delight soup--says it's good for your lungs lol. It was good. I asked for some sriracha and dumped it into the soup. They must make theirs or buy a different type, it was chunky with chili flakes and super hot. I could have used a lot more but what they gave me made the soup taste good. Also- spring rolls, good typical spring roll- you only get two though- they should really update the menu with the quantities. The dipping sauce is watery and flavorless. I dipped it in the chili/ sriracha sauce I asked for. My boyfriend ordered three orders of the chicken fingers I tried one, yes they are very very good- but- anything fried like that is. Again, dipping sauce was blah, I wish they had more sauces for dipping. Like a flavorful peanut sauce, spicy sauce etc. I have a gluten intolerance- so, obviously I knew I was snacking on things that would make me sick- So, if you have celiacs, don't go here, they cook with straight up gluten. Really damn good! The no-name is amazing. So good it doesn't even need a name. I (almost) prefer their dishes to ones with meat, because you know you're never going to get a "questionable" bite with weird consistency (know what I mean?). The service leaves something to be desired, though. We've been there when the place was completely deserted, and found ourselves sitting around with our thumbs up our butts, ready to order and/or pay, while the entire staff makes it their priority to fold napkins across the room, in plain view of us. Stopped her with my mom and my nine month old for lunch. At first I thought it was closed as it was empty but we were greeted by the waitress. First and foremost, this place is vegan/vegetarian so if it says shrimp or chicken on the menu, it's more than likely seitan or tofu. We ordered lunch specials, my mom got one with vegetables in a spicy sauce and I got sautéed veggies with "shrimp". Both were good, my only complaint about my moms is that the pieces of kale were huge - like the entire kale leaf in tact...perhaps they can be chopped down a little like the bok choy. The soups (which came with the lunch specials) we got to start were mentioned in the menu as good for the lungs and had mushrooms and other tasty essentials - yes please. Best Asian food in Boston. Forget the fact that it's all vegetarian, there are so many more flavors and types of dishes at Grasshopper than anywhere else. If you're looking for a change, try the coconut noodles or the "beef" fried rice. Both will leave you feeling like every other Asian spot has been cheating you. I really wanted to love this place. Having been raised vegetarian, I am no stranger to vegetarian Chinese food with tofu and veggies as staples. I usually order veg with garlic sauce, sesame tofu, and the like when I order from regular Chinese restaurants, but it is always hit or miss with flavor, texture, and freshness. I ordered take out of the sweet and sour tofu sensation, and the watercress with garlic and ginger. While the vegetables were crisp and seemed fresh, the tofu was very poorly cooked (worse than at a general Chinese restaurant). It was essentially undercooked chunks of tofu covered with greasy crunchy batter pieces that slid off the undercooked tofu. I expected a restaurant that advertises themselves as vegetarian/vegan Asian cuisine to have a better understanding of how to cook tofu. The sauce was ok, but not very interesting. Also, the side of brown rice came with a strange sauce and what seemed like old (past their prime) strips of veggies I'll give this place another shot for dine in, but I much prefer Mary Chung's in Cambridge or Thelonious Monkfish for good vegetarian-friendly Asian fare. read more

This has been a vegan staple to Boston for years. Thank goodness that it has survived some of the other places that have come & gone. It really has great food & will satisfy you're Asian cuisine craving. The fact that's it's vegan is just an added plus. I am a fan due to all the food variety they have, from noodles to rice dishes & delicious appetizers like the cold peanut noodle dish which is my favorite. You can get healthy dishes that are packed w/ kale & other veggies as well as getting things not so healthy like the 'no-name' which is simply outstanding. As the Boston Vegetarian Society has been doing their New Year's Day multi-course meal for us for a very long time, it is amazing at how the staff make things go so well. BVS does a monthly speaker series here as well where there is a buffet & it's hard not to get more than one plate of food since it's so damn good. The staff are super friendly & helpful. I determined that it's probably been like 17 years that I have been going to Grasshopper on a regular basis for a reason. So whether you eat animals or not, their food really is fantastic & definitely worth checking out one of the best vegan restaurants in town. read more

The vegan options here are great and I have ordered both the No Name and the Sweet and Sour Sensation because I love anything battered with sweet and sour sauce. The food is completely different from the greasy Chinese options in the Allston/Brighton area. This is the only Chinese in the area I have ordered more than once and enjoyed. The portions are huge and I always have leftovers which is not a complaint. My one critique is that they do not have the option of fried rice as a side unless you want to pay the price of another meal. They only offer plain white or brown rice. read more

Wow can I give this place 10 stars??? Easily the best Chinese food I ever had! The food was so fresh and tasty and the portion sizes are huge! I ordered the Sweet and Sour sensation and oh my was it sensational! It takes a lot for me to like tofu that I get from restaurants because no one can ever seem to cook it correctly but wow this place has really out done themselves. This place is great. No not the ambiance -which isn't too bad if you choose a booth. And not the fancy dishes. What is great is the buffet and the vegan meat dishes they make. I eat a plant based diet but I typically abhor fake meat dishes. I like whole natural food that resembles closely its original state:) But they do it pretty well. The problem is I then tend to overeat and then feel queasy. But their variety is tasty and I want to try it all - and with the buffet I do try it all, too often and then get that queasy stomach! Service is helpful - sometimes you have to speak up but they do try hard enough. Some suggestions if you go: 1. Parking can be rough (look at the map). There are a few spots to park and lots of space for the "losa cruisa" to make a stop (old Boston slang for the bus). 2. Get a booth - it will protect you from people trying to squeeze by the tables in the middle and you won't have to share a table if you're not into that kind of stuff. You will need 3-4 people though to get a booth. 3. The Boston Veg Society holds regular brunches here and you can listen to a speaker and get the buffet. This is usually on Sunday I believe so if you like that stuff go, if not avoid. Pricing is good for the buffet. If you pay dish prices, you really can't try all the different dishes economically.
