My favorite restaurant in Culpeper. Great food, friendly servers and an adorable atmosphere. Try the spicy vegetable dumping super yummy.

I am so happy that this building space is in use again. We stopped in one afternoon for lunch and shared two appetizer specials which were delicious and more than enough to eat! The service is very friendly and efficient and the decor eclectic. I can't wait to make a visit for dinner or try out one of the live music evenings! read more

Just had dinner with my husband and two young children here. I wish that I lived in Culpepper so that I could go here more often. The service was amazing and the food was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was warm, pleasant and had great live music. They were so nice and so accommodating to our kids. We left happy with our food, wine, beer and service. Could not recommend it highly enough. read more

Very relaxed good fun! And food was delicious! Great service and will def come back!!

My first time here I noticed the atmosphere and ambiance. It was decorated for Halloween with big blow up figures which made it seem festive. The dining room was warm and friendly. I love how they have different types of seating available such as booth type seating with pillows, tables, and even retro style tables. The waiters and staff were all very friendly...we never had to ask for water refills because as soon as a few sips were taken it was filled back up. I believe a man who may have been the owner even came to ask how we were doing and made casual conversation making us laugh when asking about the music of the evening. The appetizer was great and plated well. The main dishes we picked were seasonal specials and although mine was really tasty the other dish wasn't as good. I ordered the mushroom ravioli with shrimp. It was drowning in sauce which was actually my favorite part of the dish. I think the plating could've been improved on both main dishes as there is SO much potential to make it appealing to the eye. It was just covered in the sauce and the colors of the shrimp and squash were just lost. The other dish we ordered was a beef special with risotto and the risotto was under cooked and the beef was sliced like roast beef. The plating again left much to be desired here as it has so much potential. Maybe a few roasted carrots for color or something could'be been added to the plate for visual appeal. The dessert was amazeballs! The chocolate cake with a mousse layer was plated beautifully with an added blueberry, strawberry, and a mint leaf. The chocolate sauce was covering the plate and drizzled into a design. We ordered coffee with the dessert which was a regular size mug not a dessert mug which are typically smaller. No complaints on that here but it was a little funny to have a huge cup of coffee in the evening. When we got the check we paid cash and gave $26 over the amount due but the server never came back to offer us change which I thought was a bit tacky that he just assumed he would be served a 30% tip. Overall the ambiance was great, owner was funny, and food was decent. I would definitely go back but may stick with one of their regular dish items. read more

Stopped in culpeper for the night traveling from New York. We walked down Davis and were drawn to the restaurants unique look and feel. Love the decor and the look and feel of the place. Their was live music which was GREAT. 5 stars for the guitar player and singer. It took a while to get seated. The staff seemed all over the place and overwhelmed although the restaurant did not seem busy. After some time the bus boy brought us some bread and butter. The bread was four of the SMALLEST pieces of bread. Although it tasted good their was more butter on the plate than bread. Wasn't sure if the butter went on the bread or the bread went on the butter. It took forever for someone to take our order. The food was ok not great not bad but the service was half a star at best. With the look and atmosphere, that place should be packed and they should at least have a staff that knows what they are doing. read more

My daughter and I visited Grass Roots and it was awesome. The service was great, the food was incredible and the atmosphere was welcoming. Both of us had a fabulous experience and will definitely be returning. read more

Do NOT go to this quaint town without visiting this great vibe restaurant. Food was great: wine was fantastic; ambiance was eclectic and fun; owner and staff was attentive. read more

I met up with a few friends for drinks last night-a very rare occasion. Two friends had been there for 30 minutes, sitting at a table near the bar, and were finishing their first round of drinks. I arrived with another friend and sat down. No one approached to take our drink orders for 20 minutes or so, nor were there menus, drink or otherwise, so I started looking around and finally got someone's attention. After 20 more minutes, another couple joined us. At the end of the night, I approached the bar to look for someone to settle up with. After a few minutes, the owner came out with a bill for all of us together. I had wrongly assumed that our tabs would have been separated as we had arrived at such different times. The owner denied our request to split the bill, so we were left to decipher the printout and figure out who had the $9 drinks, the $11, and the $14. As only one couple had cash, we did the best we could to calculate how to split the bill. My friend and I each had two of the cheaper drinks, so we paid $26 apiece, accounting for tax and tip. Now the owner claims we stiffed him. We will not be going back and will take our business to a place with more class, like Flavor. read more

The food was good and the waitress was very nice. It took way too long to get the food and the owner was a complete jerk. Won't go back.

New favorite restaurant in Culpeper. Food is farm to table and you can taste the difference. Service is friendly and attentive. Andrew, the owner, is on the floor making sure everyone is taken care of. read more

My wife and I just left there looking forward to one of our first experiences in Culpeper. Manager was nice at first then obnoxious/plastic unless you personally know him then your table will get served priority. Food was very good until we received bill, I usually never look at bill, good thing!!! WRONG BILL.... Alleged entree was not and when I advised my disappointment owner says oh that was appetizer... Okay... Then he walks away, hmmm, "plastic friendliness" Draft beer they serve with full head of at least an inch of foam??? 3 times asked if we were finished??? Unorganized .... Soft shell Crab sandwich was excellent, would I go back,,, not with owner's attitude sorry, trying to be upscale in a small town show some politeness and concern too quick to discard a potential frequent customer.... read more

Stopped in for lunch while passing through Culpeper. Great atmosphere and the food was delicious. We both had a flatbread off the lunch menu. The owner was so welcoming and you can tell he has put a lot of love into it. Will come back for sure! read more

Where should I begin?... Mediocre food. Terrible service. Bugs frozen in the ice cubes. Extra charges on the bill. Handed dirty napkins. Bartender added extra shots to beverages without telling us resulting in $18.00 per drink. Never again. read more

My first time here I vowed to never come back, I was seated quickly, our waters were brought moments later, and then 45 minutes went by and no one ever came to take our order. We ended up just leaving. Because of peer pressure I have been back several times with friends and have had nothing but good experiences. They have redeemed themselves in my book. It seems like they have worked through their service kinks and I would gladly recommend it to my friends. read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant after a morning bike ride and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The ambiance is wonderful, the decor is beautiful, the staff is great, and the food and drink are WONDERFUL! The owner spent a lot of time with the customers and it was so nice to see. He seems like a great guy that we look forward to giving our future business to. The restaurant has great outdoor space and live music some evenings as well. Get the cheeseburger!! read more

I've eaten here several times, but just recently celebrated here for my 40th birthday with 17 family and friends. We were accommodated beautifully! We dined "family style" by ordering several dishes and appetizers and passed them around...caesar and house salad, AH-mazing vegetable dumplings, pasta with meatballs, and barbecue chicken with greens and sweet potatoes...oh, and delicious, oh-so crispy french fries!!! Amazing hospitality! Thank you, thank you! read more

This is an excellent place for dinner. The food was excellent! Salmon was cooked to perfection and the spaghetti was out of this world! The wait time was a little lengthy and staff seemed to be circling around trying to look busy. My one pet peeve - When we came in the room temperature was very nice. During the middle of our meal they opened the door going to the outdoor tables and left it open! The room temperature became warm and flies became abundant in the room. I made the suggestion to the waitress to close the door because of the flies. She closed it for about 5 minutes and then opened it and it remained open. I am in hopes that the owner of Grass Rootes will read this review and change some of policies with his staff regarding the open door leading to outdoor tables. When we left there was only one outdoor table occupied. The staff seemed disorganized. Again, the food was fabulous but the service/staff need some polishing. read more

The food and atmosphere were great but the service and management needs some work. I realize this is a new business and they need time to work out the flow of the staff but there were a couple things that were just bizarre. Standing in line at a nice restaurant to get a table is just unacceptable especially when there is a waiting area with seating and a bar. Get a hostess or hand out numbers to people when they arrive, so that people can sit and wait in the bar or waiting area until a table becomes available. I have a chronic illness and standing in line for 45 minutes is extremely painful and exhausting, there was a person on crutches ahead of us that had to stand and wait in line for who knows how long. Not having one waitress but 3-4 depending on whoever happened to be walking past our table. We were asked if we needed more bread 4 times by 4 different people. The poor wait staff seemed to be running around non stop making it seem chaotic and unorganized. One last thing, if you are going to serve steak please provide knives that will actually cut a steak, my butter knife was sharper than my steak knife. My advice is if you are going to eat here go in the middle of the afternoon when there is no wait and the staff is not so busy. read more

Went Friday evening with my wife for dinner and music. For starters we asked to be seated on the rear deck because that's where the music was playing, waitress said only thing is picnic tables so we would have to sit inside? Service was slow and very disorganized, one of the waiters asked if we wanted desert, didn't even get out dinner yet. Food was nothing to write home about. After dinner we made our way to the back deck to listen to the music, I went to the bar to get drinks for my wife and myself, what an experience, they had one person taking care of the whole place who couldn't keep up. I had to wait at least 15 minutes to get two drinks the first time around. The next time back was even better, after waiting for about 15 minutes and them acting like I wasn't even there I asked how a person can get a drink I was told to wait patiently. A painful experience and no I would not recommend to go or go back. read more
