Everything I've ordered here has been great. It feels a bit pricey to me, like a dollar or two high, but the food is fresh and the quality is prime so the added cost makes sense for the quality. The homemade soups blew my mind, as have the lamb gyros, the yogurt parfaits, and the homemade chips tossed in with a gyro order. Adding those little things makes a difference. My family have been fans of Grape Leaf since they opened. Wonderful range of salads and hot foods for vegetarian or vegan tastes as well as traditional meats. Phil the owner takes a lot of pride in providing fantastic service as well as great food, which comes through no matter who you meet there. Phil catered a party for 50+ people recently for us and was very thoughtful in preparing the meal and service beforehand. I am really happy this place opened. We need more restaurants in Newton. The people are really nice and some of the food I've ordered (like the spanikopita) has been very good. However, if they are going to be able to compete with Anna's Taqueria across the street, I think they need to make a few changes. The fattoush and the gyros need to be improved. The fattoush had too much lettuce and not enough of the other stuff like cucumbers, tomatoes, olives and other leafy greens. Radishes would be nice too. I thought the meat for the gyros was tender and flavorful and the tzatziki is great. But, the gyro just didn't have a lot of flavor. It needs more tomatoes and onions. And why not offer up other toppings for the gyro like cucumbers, lettuce, herbs, pickled vegetables, olives, feta cheese, hot sauce? Lastly, I think there should be a recycling bin in the restaurant. Newton is pretty serious about recycling and people don't feel right throwing cans and plastic containers in the trash. So, again. I'm super excited that Grape Leaf came to Newton. I know it's a lot of work and it's a big risk to open a restaurant. So, I want to see them with a line out the door! I used to be a cook before I started my present career and I still cook a lot and explore restaurants all over. So, I think my opinion is well informed. read more

Gyros were good we got the lamb and tofu! Good price as well! The lemon potatoes were good simple yet tasty. The potatoes are in a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice but nothing too overwhelming. The rice chicken lemon soup was a tad bit too sour for me but definitely what is needed to fight off a winter's cold. Good food, affordable and tasty what more can you ask for? I ordered the lamb gyro and Greek fries. It was not that great. It was sliced lamb meat, no spices/herbs. Very bland and a lot of liquid dripping. I don't really enjoyed my meal. That's not gyro!! Quick, clean, friendly, delicious with amazing smells to boot. Grabbed two spanakopita [spinach pie] and devoured mine in record time. Fabulous portions! I saw plenty of vegan options, which I thought was really cool. I loved the various Greek signage and etymology of Greek words painted on the wall as decor. I'd been meaning to try Grape Leaf and correct forgetting. A friend reminded me about the restaurant. It's been a week since she told me and I've been twice in that time. The first time I had the lamb shank dinner and it was fall of the bone, melt in your mouth yummy. Big chunks of carrots sitting on a bed of pilaf with a side salad. My sister had the lamb gyro and raved about it. Now one week later we went back. I got the steak gyro and my sister got the lamb gyro again. We also split a greek salad. The greek salad was full of lettuce, onions, tomatoes, olives and two large chunks of feta. This is not the crumble the regular pizza parlor gives you but the real deal. It also came with two pieces of pita for us because we had told the cashier we were going to share the salad. Now I'm ready to go back and have convinced my coworkers to join me in a takeout meal! The only downside is the seating area is pretty small and therefore fills up quickly. Once the warmer weather comes out I figure I can take my food outside to one of the benches and enjoy good food and sunshine. They do not have a alcoholic beverages but that's ok with me. They have regular sodas and a few specialty sodas and juices. read more

Some of the best Mediterranean food I've ever had. I ordered through GrubHub for myself and coworkers during the lunch rush and a salad was unfortunately left behind. I called to let them know and Phil drove the salad over within ten minutes of getting the call. He also included an incredible variety of their desserts. This place has great food, but they do something very dumb with delivery dinners that you should be aware of. They all include Greek Salad, which I expected would come in a separate container from the hot food. I was wrong. I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, braised lamb shank, and the salad came in the same container as the hot meat, rice, and vegetables. Of course this meant that the lettuce was a limp mess from the heat of the other food, and the cold salad dressing had soaked into the rice and mixed with the tomato sauce from the lamb. Yuck! If you order a dinner for takeout or delivery, make sure that you ask them to put the salad in a separate container or you will get the same mess I got. They should know better. read more

Only reason for 4 star instead of 5 was the fries. They were excellent but I paid extra for Greek fries and when I opened the box they were plain, with no cheese or oregano. I stumbled upon this place while traveling. I am always up for authentic Greek or Mediterranean food so i stopped in for quick lunch. It's counter service and was very clean and cute. Most of the food was very good. The portion sizes were more than enough for a lunch plate. I got the vegan plate even though I am not a vegan. I'm a vegetarian so I asked them to modify it which they happily did. The Tzatziki is excellent, the falafel balls are crispy on the outside and very flavorful on the inside. The tabouli was also fantastic. The reason they didn't get 5 stars is that the kid at the register seemed a little clueless. He may have been new and was sweet. The grape leaves were terrible. I can't speak to the grape leaves with meat but the vegan grape leaves were strange. They added chickpeas inside and they were very dry and lacked flavor. One major improvement they could make was to make the grape leaves with just rice and spices in a lemony sauce like everyone else! Disappointing. The rest was pretty good and they were very pleasant. They also only had one vegetarian plate that was a variety of their different foods. Many places will offer you the choice of three or four of their sides to make up one plate and you get to choose what it is. This would be a fantastic addition to their menu. We just had lunch at Grape Leaf. It is a super convenient location in Newton Highlands, not far from Bread and Chocolate Bakery. They just build the space out in a very clean, modern way. You can take out or there is plenty of seating as well. They have a big, varied Greek menu. We are trying to be vegetarian for a bit here so had a variety of vegetarian items-- grape leaves, hummus, pita, falafel, even a veggie gyro. The food was truly excellent. So fresh and healthy.
