I've lived near this place for quite awhile, and finally stopped in for dinner. I'd avoided it because I wasn't sure Middle Eastern food was for me. Now I'm upset that it took me so long. Dove right in with the Chicken Shawana. It is just garlic marinated chicken with rice. Simple, but excellent. Salad that came with it was good too, and portion size was very large. Pretty good Middle eastern food at very reasonable prices. A family run buisness that stays true to its roots. Everything on the menu is good, the swarma, lamb kabobs, the hummus all good. There cajun steak fries are pretty good too, although you can chose rice instead. They do not serve alcohol like most Arab restaurants but there fruit smoothies are pretty good, recommend the papaya. It's been years since I've been back and the food is still amazingly good. The chicken shawarma with hommous is what I always order. The chicken has so much flavor and the hommous is on point. It's still the best shawarma and hommous I've had yet so far and I've been to many Lebanese Mediterranean restaurants near and far. I upgraded my salad to a Greek and I love it. The dressing is what makes the salad so delicious - tangy, tart and lemony. It's covered in feta cheese, I mean literally covered. Hottest day of the year, the pavement in the parking lot is being redone. Nothing better than walking in to the cold AC of Grape Leaf. Except when the food arrive. The cold AC takes a backseat to enormous stuffed grape leaves, almond rice and charbroiled chicken. Simply amazing. And just when the day couldn't get better homemade ice cold cheesecake. Some people drive to Michigan to get broasted chicken, some fly to France for a croissant. Me? I am driving to grape leaf for the cheesecake. The food was incredible but the cheesecake was heaven. One of my favorite spots off of route 2 so far, which is where I stay for work when I visit Toledo. The staff is extremely friendly. This place is relatively cheap and the portions are HUGE. The food is tasty and fresh. I really like the tabouleh salad. I've gotten the hummus chicken platter and the shrimp plate. Both were fantastic. Good Eats! A few vegetarian options. Vegetable Kabob is very good and they also offer a couple veg plates. Arayis Pita is huge. Don't forget the garlic sauce! I was watching my niece on a Friday night with my brother-in-law as he was sleepy from work and her mother was catching a really bad bug. So late and my niece obviously was catching the bug also and couldn't sleep, we needed to eat and to exhausted for the kitchen. It's 9:30PM and for some reason as we are in panicking to figure out what we want to eat (yes, men panic over food, j/k, but we did) and his eyes lit up as if he had some great epiphany that warmed the deepest depths of his souls. The words that took forever to spill over his lips were...(drumroll please...) Grape Leaf? I didn't know what to order, so I just told him to get me whatever he was going to order. So we order over the phone and its available withing FIFTEEN MINUTES for us to pick it up. He returned with a large, stuffed to capacity T-shirt bag. So what did this guy get me to eat? Beef! It was the Arayis pita, ground beef in a thin pita was featured star in this combo. It came with a side of french fries, fattoush salad and completely unexpected large stack of triangular pita in a plastic bag with a large portion of hummus. Well there wasn't much flavor to the pita itself for me but the salad was spectacular. French fries, does anyone ever go wrong when they cook it fresh? I can't say I am a fan of this place but I'm sure by the look of my brother-in-laws face that this won't be the last time that we will call them. He was completely satisfied. Maybe it best not be paired with french fries. There was alot of sodium that made it hard to taste the pita. But promise to try again, but would at least stop and have the salad anytime. The Grapeleaf Diner is my go-to for a great gyro. I go a couple of times a month to indulge. After shopping tonight I stopped by for my usual gyro dinner with French fries and Fatoosh salad. The food? Amazing as usual. The service? Lacking in a big way. I sat way too long waiting for my server to finish flirting with one of the cooks (I could overhear them from where I was sitting) for the entire meal. They have cool lighting but keep their florescent on which overt take the effect of the over all feel of the restaurant. Service is lacking. There is one server that is actually good. The others not to sure good luck getting a refill or your check. No follow up. I gave them 4 stars because of food. They deserve 5 but need to get the service in order. Excellent food, but carry out service needs to be improved!! I would have given it five stars, but they ALWAYS seem to miss something with our to-go orders. Most of the time we just roll with it or zoom back up there. However, the last time I went there, they gave one of our dinners to someone else and I had to wait to have it made over again. The insult was that they tried to make it seem like I messed up or called the wrong location! They finally realized the mistake and called and asked the other customer to bring her food back! Not sure if they really thought I was going to be crazy enough to eat something that someone else had already taken possession of and took home?!! Being a loyal customer, they could have given me something for free for the inconvenience, but they didn't. After that hassle, about three months ago, I haven't been back to this particular location. Grape Leaf is my favorite restaurant in Toledo. I used to live just down the road and stop in for dinner, carry-out, or lunch every couple weeks. Now that I live out-of-state, I eat here every time I'm driving by the T! The beef kafta is incredible and is definitely my favorite item on the menu, both in the wrap and in the kafta meal. The hummus is SO good, inexpensive, and comes in huge portion sizes. My fellow Americans...the food here is better than any 5 star restaurant in Lucas county. Big hot food, savory flavors, fresh crisp salad with the best house dressing in the world. How they make the best hummus better than the best hummus in the galaxy is beyond me. Giant desserts but they do not serve alcohol and that is a shame but they do have take out and you can just eat and drink safely at home. Spotlessly clean and a they cater, they have a room you can entertain in but no WIFI from what I could gather. Plenty of parking too. I will eat at this restaurant twice a month for the rest of my days here in Lucas county. Let me say...I rarely eat out because Toledo has so few really good restaurants. Let me just say Toledo is not known for their food. I have eaten at many places and nearly all of them disappoint me. Ok, I don't know why I'm beating around the bush here - the food in Toledo sucks. Grape leaf is certainly an exception. The food here is great, fresh, and authentic. That white garlic sauce they serve is outstanding with chicken shawarma. The prices are great especially for the portion size. This is the one place that I feel like I have to get to whenever I am in town. Delicious!!! For lunch today my husband and I shared a plate of hummus, grape leaves and the gyro salad Greek style. Portions are huge!!! Absolutely perfect portions for sharing with your date, or the entire table. Everything tasted amazing!!! We even packed 1/2 the plate of grape leaves and 1/2 the hummus to go. Perfect little snack for later, especially with the fresh cucumbers from my garden. Also, I used an expired Groupon and the restaurant honored it at the groupon deal. That's awesome in my book!!! I love this place. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. The gyros are really good and per my last visit, you can order the lunch portion anytime during the day if you don't want a full dinner portion. The meal comes with a soup (I usually opt for the lentil). Great food for great value, that sums up this place. read more
