    Falafel salad.
    Paul W.

Arrived about noon on a Monday, found the diner about half full. I ordered the "falafel salad," which is really more like a vegetarian combo platter, with fatoush, tabouli, and hummus as well as the namesake bean patties. All items were good. Falafels were crisp outside, soft but not mushy inside. Hummus was creamy with plenty of garlic and lemon flavor. The portion of tabouli was generous, and very good. Nice piquant dressing on the fatoush (really more of a lettuce salad than a true fatoush, but nothing I'd complain about.) Service was quick and very attentive, with several check ins from my server. I go to Toledo often, but sadly, not often to this corner of it. GLD is a great stop if you're in the area.

This one is a mixed bag. I really want to like it here. It has excellent reviews, but I wasn't impressed. The service was pretty miserable. I sound like an old fart, but it's mostly young adults or teenagers who mostly want to stand away from the tables and talk. Some of them actually were sitting at the empty booth. I guess my work ethic was if you have time to lean, you have time to clean, or at least wait on the three tables that are there. My husband ordered the gyro and I the gyro salad. Someone who didn't take our order brought out his gyro and then just walked away. I assumed my salad must be right behind. Wrong, about 5 minutes later I had to ask a different server to locate someone to help us. Our server was standing and talking in the back. I also think the person who dropped off the gyro should assume I'm not going to sit and watch him eat. He enjoyed his gyro but to me the gyro salad was blah. Mushy tomatoes, crappy olives, feta cheese that looked like little tiny shreds, and mediocre dressing. We have a closer location to me in Perrysburg, but I can't see myself going back. There are many better Mediterranean restaurants in Toledo. Don't believe the hype and reviews for this place. Try somewhere else.

This was my first visit, and I'm so glad I stopped in for lunch! I ordered the veggie grape leaves as an appetizer, and the falafel salad as my meal! So much flavor!

    Mixed Grill Kabobs

Absolutely amazing! You could tell everything was super fresh! Excellent marinades that made every bite melt in your mouth! I'm not a huge fan of steak but wow, these kabobs were perfectly cooked medium that I would order just that if I were to come again! Too bad we are just in the area for the night! I feel like I've been transported to the Middle East!

My first time here, wonderful food and super nice people running the place. You can definitely feel the family vibe here - it's very warm and welcoming. Cozy place in a shopping center with easy parking. I had the chicken lemon rice soup and a supreme bowl with gyro meat and a bunch of wonderful toppings! You decide whether you want a pita or a bowl, then you pick your protein, toppings and sauces, and any sides that you might like. If you still have room after your main course you can select from a number of delicious desserts. Everything is really super flavorful which I really appreciated. I can assure you the next time I'm in the area I will definitely stop here again. I recommend you give this place a try - I think you'll be very happy.

The Mediterranean Latte is my usual go-to, sweetened with honey (they offer other sugar substitutes as well!). It's like a warm hug. They always have several excellent seasonal flavors as well, so we try those every time. This winter, the Peppermint Mocha and the Cinnamon Latte are delightful. Everyone who works here is so friendly and helpful. They remember us even tho we are only here twice a year, and I find that very sweet. We have had their bowls as well, all of which were good quality. There are lots of protein, topping, and sauce choices. They have grab n go desserts and some side dish items in the cooler with the sodas (they have Coke *and* Pepsi products). This location is clean, bright and warm with a clean restroom (for customers only) and some outdoor tables to enjoy in the warmer months. We have been and will be back many many more times to come!

I feel that's early for a Saturday night. In any event, we went to the strip mall where it's located, near the intersection of Monroe Street and Alexis Road. On a positive note, there is definitely plenty of parking. We walked in and there was no host or hostess to greet us. We waited a few moments then a busy server ( who appeared to be the only one at the time) came and quickly sat at a booth. She dropped the menus on the table and left without saying a word. Approximately 10 minutes later, the same girl came back. She asked if she could get us a drink and if we wanted to order some appetizers. It would've been nice if she told us her name or asked if this was our first time at the establishment, but neither happened. We each ordered a glass of wine and then my boyfriend inquired about their "uncorking fee". The young woman looked bewildered and instead of asking what that meant, she chose to defensively tell us with her eyes squinted and head cocked to the side, "Nobody has ever asked me that before." We explained that at some restaurants, allow you to bring in your own bottle and charge an uncorking fee- just so she understood the question. She stood there and blankly looked back at us. After a short pause, she offered to ask the restaurant's policy. My boyfriend said yes please do; we wanted to know for future reference. (We had already ordered a glass for tonight's meal.) Before she left the table, I asked about their grape leaves; we ended up ordering those as well. While we were waiting for that, a different employee from the kitchen, came up and greeted the table behind us. She obviously knew the people and sat down and spoke with them, then took their order. It's important to mention that this cook had gloves on. While having the same gloves on, I noticed her grab not only the back of a chair at a different table, she also grabbed a railing that separates the tables from the booths, then walked behind the bar and poured glasses of wine. I was surprised that someone from the back of the house/kitchen would even wear gloves out in the dining area; let alone touch and perform tasks. To be completely clear, I was worried. I could only hope she took those dirty gloves off before she started preparing food again. We weren't off to a very good start. Wait times were longer than I expected, I say this mostly because there were only five tables taken in the entire restaurant, and we were one of them. Having said that, the table behind us, the one where the cook had her gloves on, got their food. Happy to share that this time the cook did not have gloves on when she brought the entrées out to their table. Our appetizers arrived shortly thereafter, and I was surprised to see eight super skinny grape leaves. (They were no bigger than the diameter of my pinky finger.Understand I'm used to the delicious grape leaves at Byblos and The Grape Leaf.) In all fairness, although they were skinny, they were very tasty. When our entrées arrived, the server explained the kitchen had made a mistake with our sides, but to rectify the situation they sent us an extra order of steak fries. Since it was no big deal to us, we thanked them for the gesture. The two entrées we selected were Sish Kafta and a sliced chicken breast dish that came on a bed of hummus. After reading reviews prior to our visit, my expectations for the hummus was pretty high. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Again although very tasty, it was very thin. They call it "creamy", and it is; GREAT flavor, but just very thin. Again, I'm comparing it to Byblos, Sidon, and the Grape Leaf. The side of rice that came on the shish kafta plate was cold. Both entrées were flavorful, but we're small portions. Especially the chicken entree; not a very good value for the price. When I'm paying over $20 for an entrée of chicken, I expect that I at least get half a breast. I probably had 10-12 pieces that were baby bite-size or smaller; no way was that even a half of a full breast. Our server never asked if we wanted another glass of wine or more water. She did ask if we wanted dessert, we declined. At the end of our experience, I asked her her name. I thought she would've picked up that she never told us, but again she was young and clueless. It amazes me how people in the service industry don't want to work for their tip. I can suffice it to say we will not be going back to Damascene Grill. Overall, the food was mediocre, and the service was poor. When we want Mediterranean cuisine, we will continue to support the tried and true delicious dining experience that we consistently have at Byblos.

It's nice in there, but it was just too loud for us. We asked our waitress if we could move to the back room. she checked with the hostess, and it was no problem. She graciously helped us move, thanked us and handed us off to our new waitress. She was really nice about everything. Our new waitress took our drink orders, and I decided to have a Manhattan. It was just the well whiskey (I'm guessing they used domestic whiskey, so the "e" needs to be there!) and it was really well made. They even used a giant ice cube that kept the drink well chilled without the dilution issues typical ice can bring. On to appetizers... We had the calamari and an order of hummus with onions and browned butter. The calamari was really nice, but kind of stingy. It was very well cooked, nicely breaded, etc. My one quibble is there just wasn't enough, especially for the price. The hummus... So, the hummus was a rather generous portion that was out of this world delicious. It was served in a large bowl with browned onions, brown butter, paprika and fried or baked chickpeas. The hummus reminded me of Middle East Market. Smooth, creamy, garlicky, well-seasoned. If you go to Souk and don't get this, you're making a huge mistake. After the apps, we moved on to our entrees... I had the crab cakes. They were really enjoyable, served with some nicely dressed, mixed salad greens. they were full of crab meat (but unfortunately not lump crab). The outside was crispy and the inside was very nicely cooked. Great flavor. One of the folks at the table had the butternut squash ravioli. It was probably my favorite dish of all that night. Amazing flavor and perfect texture. the thing that makes their ravioli the "leader of the ravioli wars" is they served them with a sherry, cream sauce that was just amazing. Kind of a sweet and savory, salty thing. Delicious. Our other guest had the Kafta Ravioli and said it was really good. I didn't try it, so I really can't comment, but it did look pretty great. After our entrees, we moved on to coffee and split a desert. Souk's Turkish coffee was great. It's been years since I've had Turkish coffee, but it was really strong and piping hot. Just perfect. We also split an order of their bread pudding. WOW! I've not had bread pudding that good since I was in New Orleans. So, my first trip to Souk really sucked (see my review). My guess is they were having a bad night, and we got stuck with a really sh*tty waiter. The place is expensive, but the food and drink substantiate the prices. Our waitress was very professional, she knew the menu and offered informed suggestions when asked. She seemed to know when we needed her. We were not rushed and really felt like they appreciated out business. Can't wait to go back.
