My parents love Grape Leaf, but I'm not sure what the big deal is. This last time, I tried the Arayis pita lunch, and I didn't care for the flavor or texture. Maybe I should've tried one of my Mediterranean go-to dishes, like shawarma or gyro. Regardless, my decision backfired. I ate the pita, but didn't enjoy it. My wife kindly shared some of her beef gyro meat. While better than my pita, it was still only okay. Frankly, the best part of the meal was the rice, which isn't very encouraging. read more

I recently came in with a large party and the staff was very accommodating and patient with us (we had a lot of little kids). Since we had such a big group, we ordered a couple party platters. The variety of food in the platter was good- everything that we would've ordered anyways and AND the portions were more than enough! We had so much leftover and everyone ate until they were stuffed. I was really impressed with the falafel. I'm no expert on what falafel is supposed to be like but every time I've had it (multiple restaurants), it's been kind of dry so it's not usually my favorite. I ate a falafel when it came out here because it was the first thing that came out and we were all hungry. I was so surprised that it was a falafel because it was actually delicious! I always love dining at The Grape Leaf when ever I'm back in the Toledo area. A nice menu of Mediterranean selections along with traditional American options allows for most diners to find something they like. This time I ordered the Beef Gyro with yellow rice. There was a generous portion of nicely flavored beefy meat in the soft pita shell. I really enjoyed the yummy tzatzki sauce, a nice garlicky addition. I've been going to Grape Leaf since they opened in Holland around 1998. It's one of my favorite restaurants. As a vegetarian I really enjoyed the spinach pie. Now that I'm vegan my go-to is falafel salad with lentil soup. Other fabulous items are hummus (the best in the city), salads, pita chips, grape leaves, really anything on the menu. Toledo has a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants, but Grape Leaf Diner is #1 in Toledo! read more

The restaurant is pretty small and nothing fancy but very clean. The wait staff an be iffy. Occasionally you will get someone that forgets what you got and asks you a couple times or someone who won't refill your drinks but for the most part they are usually pretty good. The food is ALWAYS a 10. Never once have I ever had anything that tastes bad. The grape leaves are the best in Toledo. Their chicken noodle soup is also my favorite. Let me just say that I've experienced better from the Grape Leaf than the review I'm leaving today, which has been a long time coming, as this is from an experience in July. The pros: Usually the food is good and service is quick. Our food was good when we finally got it. The cons: Our July experience was not so great. We went either on July 4th or right after for lunch. (I don't remember now) It appeared that there were no normal wait staff and possibly the owners or their relatives were filling in, possibly because of the holiday. When we came in, there was us and only one other table of diners. Apparently a large party had just left, as there were several tables pushed together and the remnants of their meal was all over the tables and floor nearby. There were a couple of other unbussed tables too. All of this debris was to remain in the dining room for the hour or more we were there. The staff at the time appeared to consist of two guys, and a woman working in the kitchen, who we only briefly saw. The two guys were much more interested in talking and showing each other things on their phones than waiting on us or cleaning up the dining room, though they were friendly enough. Our food took a long time to arrive, but was good. I asked for some butter and after waiting for about 15 minutes for it, was given a bowl of prepackaged little plastic tubs of butter that were warm and many of the seals were partially open. The butter had separated and tasted kind of rancid. Kind of hard to do with prepackaged butter. Midway through the meal, I noticed one of the guys prepping pita bread for dinner on what I guess was the wait station. Without wearing any gloves, hairnet, etc., he was cutting thick stacks of bread and tossing them into a big plastic tub. He would occasionally pause to do other tasks and at no point did it appear he ever washed his hands. When the tub was full, he heaved the whole heaping thing onto the floor, and proceeded to run, hunched over, sliding the tub across the floor into the kitchen. I'm not a germophobe, but the whole thing was a bit much. If you would have asked me a year ago, I would have given a much better review. Due to the indifference and overall experience this time, I doubt I'll be returning. read more

Yellow rice with frozen veggies-not too authentic. Fatoush was soggy. Grape leaves (halah)- mushy with minimal lamb.-yuk. Falafel -Dry and hard as a rock. Chicken Tawook and Shawarma dry and tough.But the lamb chops that looked wonderful tasted like OLD mutton. Blech! Lamb should always be freshly butchered. This is why some people think they do not like lamb. I really do not get all the good reviews. I have to admit the portion sizes are generous, and the people working there are great. I think the food could be so much better. When in Toledo I would recommend Byblos on Reynolds Rd. or Beirut on Monroe Street if you want really good middle eastern food. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Toledo. We used to live right down the street and would come here for a quick, filling dinner. My wife always gets the Kafta and I always get the Gyro. Both are equally delicious and you get a ton, I mean A TON, of food for the price. The real star of the show is the homemade hummus and house made pita chips. I highly suggest getting at least the medium size, and if you eat in the pita chips keep on coming. If you like Mediterranean please stop by and give it a shot. read more

While some may argue that Byblos is THE place for Middle Eastern food here in Toledo, I'd have to disagree and say that that would apply to Grape Leaf Diner. This unassuming restaurant is a gastronomic delight, to say the least. From the pita and hummus down to the baklava, GLD has something for every taste bud. Or if you're me, you'd be smart enough to sample a bit of everything. The hummus had a fabulous blend of creaminess that paralleled the hummus that can be found over at Columbus' Cafe Shish Kabob and Cafe Istanbul. Tender with just the right juiciness, the chicken kabob was perfectly grilled and paired quite well with the yellow rice. Baklavas are NOT to be overlooked here at GLD, as they maintained the crispiness while boasting the sugary goodnesses that ooze out of the dessert and into your mouth as you bite into one of these things. Sadly, however, the food were salty enough that I had drink an entire pool's worth of water following the meal. So, if you are on a salty food binge, be sure to swing by GLD. read more

The beef gyro here is delicious! I've never had a beef gyro before, so not exactly a huge sample size to compare to, but the beef is absurdly tender and flavorful. I prefer it over traditional gyro--a must order while you're here. We also tried the grape leaves, hummus, and chicken shawarma which were also very good. Given the many Arabic speaking customers while we were here, I would say it easily passes my litmus test for authenticity. read more
