Everyone has their own preference for soul food cooking style, and I have these little hole in the wall places that I go to, but it's a pandemic so I was in search of one that is closer. Granny Dee's had good brisk to -go business. Customer service was very friendly. My oxtail plate, collard greens, sweet potatoes were mostly on point, although a little bland. The cornbread was dry though. I was excited to see tea cakes, since one does not find this homey treat very often, but was disappointed that the tea cakes had a very strange musty floral taste, like an old lady's house, that I threw it out. The lemon cake was way too sweet and tasted like box cake. I also ordered a boudin link; it was a nice size for $5 (?) but tasted a bit organic strong and burnt, and not wanting to waste a protein source, I had to eat it with lots of Tabasco to mask the flavor. My boyfriend and I decided to support this black owned establishment and I was disappointed. I got the oxtails plate with greens and corn as my side, while my guy opted for the barbecue plate with 3 meats and 2 of the kool aids (Red punch and Grape). My ox tails were a bit dry with not that much gravy and although I ordered greens as one of my sides I got mashed potatoes. The food wasn't the unpleasant part of my visit. The customer service was. Now I know it's a relatively small establishment, but the turning point for any business is wonderful customer service. The older woman taking the orders seemed a bit pressed and was rushing through our orders. And she didn't offer any pleasantries. While we received an order number, there weren't any numbers being called and people were just walking up to grab their food. Luckily an older gentleman walked out to take over this process. I tried the fish and shrimp special today. The fish was really good, hot and fresh good flavor... but the shrimp and fries was disgusting. The shrimp was dried out, cold , hard and tasted old. The fries were soggy, oily and tasteless. This was my first time so needless to say I was very disappointed. O my just tried dor the first time and the food was delicious...i had the oxtails over rice mac and cheese and green beans...oxtails were spicy but i love spicy so good mac and cheese will have you full by itself..also tried the chicken and dumplings it was also good im sooo full and satisfied i had oxtails 2 days ago and they were horrible at another place so i was skeptical but my my my thanks and i will be patronizing again... read more

It wasn't what I expected; the baked chicken was too dry, the fish seemed a tad bit over fried and the yams weren't sweet at all! I would give it another try but as far as of nov. 6, 2018 i wasn't satisfied with my meal at all! The kool-aid and mac n cheese was the best part! read more

First visit. Clean inside and a friendly lady greeted us. Wait time was reasonable. Catfish is cooked to order. My friend's smothered chops w/ mac n cheese and (canned) yams looked refrigerated and reheated. I also tried a boudin link. The food tasted good. For the price, I expected more freshness. read more

I didn't try the BBQ, which I was told was the focal point of this establishment. So I tried the catfish platter. Needless to say, it left me reaching for the salt, pepper, hot sauce, anything to boost the flavor. It's soul food... and it was lacking in the soul department. However, the portions were plentiful. The fried okra was good. And the staff is friendly. However I really would have appreciated some more bold flavor to the food. I did try a rib from my Marine who ordered it and that's the route I should have taken!! BBQ. Hence the 3 star review which is really more of a 3.5. I should have heeded the signs when the elderly man at the register was completely rude when taking my order. But no I want to support! This was definitely not worth it. Baked chicken that just had seasoning poured on too, gravy almost white instead of brown over crunchy rice, Mac and cheese pasty tasting, collard greens weren't cooked enough, cornbread was hard and dry and o had to drink water to get it down, $8 kids meal included half of a fish filet and sweet potatoes which were canned. On too of that he tried to force me to go to gas station to get change for $100. When I said I'd just get my card out of car he kept refusing and telling me to go next door. I just got the card anyway and paid. When I ordered dessert he didn't even look up and made a hand gesture towards the desserts and said get it yourself. When I came back to pick up I gave him my ticket number, he snatched ticket out of my hand, threw my bag on table outside front counter and returned to the back. I got the fish to go, it was nicley fired and good, the fries run of the mill frozen i think, nothing special. I got a side of collards, they were wonderful, reminded me of my grandmothers. I would like try and get back and try the freid chicken some time. read more

i really felt like i was at my granny's house lol she's so pleasant. she gave us a tea cake to try and i will definitely be buying one when i come back . I got meatloaf with cabbage and green beans -- all of it great by the way. you really taste the seasonings. My spouse got smothered pork chops with cabbage and yams. She likes her yams a little mushier, but everything was still pretty great. read more

Great hidden gem on Louetta, located in shopping strip with a small door, but great home style soul food.

I've eaten food from here many times when I want some really good home cooked soul food. The owner was always welcoming & wanted to make sure you order was correct. The serving portions sizes were more than expected. I actually started ordering family size containers of greens & Mac & Cheese. Over time the portions got smaller & I found myself dissatisfied with the taste. The effort to maintain the quality of the food was falling short.! I never liked the smothered food period. Gravy was like a lump of flower & water. Stopped going for a while. Looking at her website, the menu's are not updated. You see one price & it's different when you go to pick up your food. I liked her Fri ed Chicken that was only served on Thursday. First time, it was great. Second time it was over cooked, damn near burnt. Sweet potatoes & greens were good but the serving was half the size the last time I was there. I truly understand the price of food is ridiculously high, and adjustments are necessary. Please keep some consistency in the taste of the food. The guy needs to stay in the back. He has no patience when you ask questions, & if I had to rate his customer service, he'd get a 2. I wish the owners didn't forget why they got so much business. We don't mind paying more but keep the quality & customer service at the standard in which you built your reputation on. I want to give small businesses in our community my business but you too must be willing to evaluate where you started at, where you are now, & rework your business plans for the next 5+ years to ensure you remain relevant & an icon serving great soul food. I read other reviews comparing to Boston Market, First, there is no comparison. I'm really not sure BM is serving real food, but Granny Dee's is real soul food. I've eaten the meat loaf, smothered pork chops, and chicken. Love the yams and Collard Greens. Corn bread is good, but seemed a little sweet for me. I eat here when I work near here. Take a chance, you will be glad you did. Wish I had room for some dessert. I don't know what the one guy was talking about. I ate off a real plate on my last visit. Sorry for the lack of pics. Some times I start eating and forget to take them. Don't want to show a half eaten meal. I also agree the ladies working there are very sweet. The best soul food in Houston. Everything is homemade. The desserts are homemade. Oxtails and side items are great! The price is kind of high but, it is worth it. OMG!!! I saw the sign one day while in traffic Granny Dee's, but is was closed that day. The next week I told my husband lets try their desserts. I ordered the Italian cake and he ordered the pecan pie (this was a to go order). We got home and one bite of my cake I thought of my grandmother's hummingbird cake. This cake is sooo good. My husband looked at me and said this is one of the best pecan pie ever!!!! I tried the baked potato chopped beef it was good. I am going back and get a full dinner and desserts, and they have red velvet cake too. Mind you it's going to be extra exercsing, but it will be worth it all. I recommend you to please try it for yourself personally five stars is not enough. When my out of town guests comes to visit me this will be the first Soul Food restaurant I am taking them to enjoy!!! read more

I got smothered chicken, Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes, and my son got smothered pork chops, Mac and cheese and greens. The gravy for both the dishes was very greasy. The Mac and cheese was not homemade, it was cheap cheese sauce (not even velveta), the sweet potatoes were canned and someone tried to doctor them up (if you stew sweet potatoes in the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, then it seeps into the potatoes, canned potatoes just have it on top and the internal of the potato isn't seasoned right), greens tasted canned too. Cornbread was dry. There was nothing about this place that made me want to go back and I'm surprised the reviews are as good as they are. Hard to find good soul food, especially when you make it yourself, but this place seems to cut corners. read more

The food is great every time I go.. I call ahead and order for pick up and it's always ready. The chocolate cake is to die for! The sweet tea can get a little too sweet for my liking.. I've had ox tail, smothered chicken and oven chicken .. the Mac and cheese and cabbage is sooo good.. the corn bread isn't always fresh for sure. I've had hard corn bread a couple times. We decided to try Granny Dee's today. I was very excted about trying a new soulfood restaurant in the Spring area. However I was very disappointed. I've never eaten at a soul food restaurant that did not severe fried chicken. I wanted to leave then but decided to give them a try since I was inside. I ordered the smothered chicken with rice and gravy, mac and cheese and collard greens. The greens were salty, the macaroni and cheese tasted just like velveeta and the chicken was drowning in gravy. I couldn't enjoy it. My sister ordered the oxtails. They were flavorful however whoever seasoned them were heavy on the pepper. Pluses- The customer service was excellent! Okay so my family and I came after church one Sunday...I had the smothered chicken, Mac and cheese, greens, and cornbread . The chicken was good...the mac and cheese was stiff and not good...the greens had no taste at all...the cornbread tasted a day old and it was crumbly..the fish was good but everything else my kids and hubby had was not at all.
