We couldn't miss the signs announcing their opening. So we just had to give them a try. The place is not fancy, but really clean and comfy. Bottles of Louisiana hot sauce on the tables is a good sign of what's to come. Super friendly Granny Dee took our orders for take-out. Immediately feels like we're at an authentic down home kitchen. Ordered the fried catfish, oxtails with rice, fried okra, mac & cheese, mustard greens, and cabbage. We topped it off with sweet potato pie and German chocolate cake. We aren't the least bit disappointed. Everything is flavored well and not heavy with oil. Tastes just like the homemade that it is! After visiting this place several times, i must say there are some good items on the menu. I normally get the smothered chicken wings with rice. I've tried the ox tails which were pretty good. I recently tried the turkey wings and cornbread dressing, it was mediocre. This place serves genuine soul food. I haven't had food like this in Houston. The building is small and hidden. If you have a hankering for some soul food on the north side of town... oh my goodness, you have to check this place out! Granny Dee's is located right next to a gas station, so if you weren't looking for this place, you might miss it! This place has your full menu of typical soul food items, oxtails, meatloaf, smothered pork chops, etc. and all the delicious side items. Every time I come here, I order the smothered pork chops with rice, mac n' cheese and candied yams. The portions in her meals are very generous, so you will definitely be going home with some leftovers! The pork chops are so tender, you really don't even need a knife to slice them, the macaroni and cheese is thick, you can just feel the "soul" sticking to your ribs, haha, and the candied yams have just the right amount of sweetness. And if you're a cornbread snob like I am, you will not be disappointed - it is moist and slightly sweet! The seating area is not huge, but if you want to sit down and eat, there always seems to be room in Granny Dee's Kitchen. Found this nice Soul Food spot through Yelp. I ordered the Smothered Chicken Wings & Oxtail meals to go.. I'm a sucker for trying several things off a menu when I first visit.. i like variety. Lol. I ordered the smothered chicken wings with cabbage & Green beans.. the oxtails with greens & black eyed peas. Everything overall was good. I did add a little salt and pepper for my own taste buds, but hey ‍. The oxtails were a little small for my liking but were well cooked, nice gravy as well. The GREENS are what I did want to like the most but they were a tad bitter, I did get home and put a little sugar on them to whisk away that "bite" I was getting. Out of everything I was surprised I liked the cabbage as much and the black eyed peas (had some fat in them ) were my fave! I could order the smothered wings or oxtails again! If I didn't have to come home and add anything to my food, I most likely would have given them 5 stars.. but I will be returning again! I can't say anything but great things. I was super hungry on my lunch break and looked up food near by. The pictures looked great so I wanted to try (but soul food is hard to please me with). It was amazing! I had the meatloaf with rice and gravy and Mac and cheese with fried okra and black eyed peas.... Meat loaf was 7/10. Mac and cheese 10/10 and fried okra 10/10. They give you good serving sizes, food is very tasty. Especially like the pork chops and oxtails.... very good! Again, nice portions. The sides are very good as well. This diamond in the rough is mouthwatering scrumptious! She had buttermilk pie! I haven't had buttermilk pie since I was a little girl and it was so good. The pie crust is cooked just to perfection. This is my first at this soul food place. The wait was 45 minutes. I got an oxtail plate. The greens are horrible, the rice and cornbread was leftover from the day before. The cornbread was to hard to eat. The don't even give you enough rice to cover the bottom of the plate for 16.00. The person that takes your order is more than rude. read more

Candied yams are just sweet enough with all of the right spices. Collard greens were spiced right and very flavorful. Mrs. Dee herself, sweet as can be. Southern hospitality at its finest. I've been coming here since they opened a couple months ago and I love it! They have consistently delicious food that tastes fresh and home made. The soul food is definitely the best. The ox tails are super tender and just a little spicy. My coworkers love the fried fish too. The staff are always friendly while taking orders. My only complaint would be that it takes a little too long to get the drinks to the table. Most of the time we get drinks with the food. I don't normally write reviews, but I had to for Granny Dees. It's a small place at the end of a strip center and it was very clean and decorated cute. My husband ordered oxtails with collard greens and black eye peas. Went in into just to try out something new and think I found a pretty good place to sit down and enjoy some great food with a friendly staff. The gentleman that took my ordered recommended the deer sausage and tag it with some macaroni with beans and a side order of corn bread.
