I was in Houston for a meeting and was looking for soul food, so I ordered from Granny Dee's Kitchen. I ordered by way of Door Dash, the Oxtail meal with Mac and Cheese and Green Beans as my sides. When I received my food, it didn't taste as good as it sounded on the menu. The food was still warm, but the cornbread that came with the meal was inedible. It was hard and tasted as if it was days old. The Mac and cheese were flavorless. The oxtails were good and tender, the rice and gravy were interesting, and the green beans were delicious. When I return to Houston, I may try visiting this establishment to see if the food experience will be different. read more

It's not very large, but the minute you walk through the doors the smells reassure you that you've made a wise decision. Most restaurants, even the best of restaurants do some dishes well and maybe lacking a few others. However, after ordering two meals for my wife and myself, and then ordering another meal to go, I didn't fine a single entrée or side dish that I didn't think was outstanding. The food was bland very bland, I wish i could say more but that's just my honest opinion.

I have been two times for lunch. The restaurant is attached next door to a gas station and parking space is limited. My first visit was on a Thursday and I ordered a two piece fried chicken dinner of a leg and thigh with green bean and black eyed peas with tea for $12.98 with tax. The meal came out in about 20 minutes. The chicken was easily a 5. Perfectly battered and fried it was delicious. It's too bad that fried chicken is only offered on Wednesday and Thursday. The veggies were both very good in taste and it came with a moist and flavorful piece of cornbread. This meal was a 5 and made me eager for a return visit. About a week later, I returned on a Sunday for lunch. This time, I went with the smothered pork chops that comes with rice and gravy along with two veggies of which I chose the same two from the previous visit forgetting that I had ordered them then. This meal was ready in about 10 minutes. Meals here are served in to go containers and I like the way they wrap with foil the bread separately from the food. This meal was not to the level of the previous one. My biggest complaint was being given a very dry and stale piece of cornbread. You could look at it and see it was inedible. The smothered pork chops were ok but only rated a 3.5 with the rice, gravy and veggies about the same. This was not a bad meal (except for the cornbread) it just wasn't up to the same level as the fried chicken. With tax and tea it was a little over $14. I will give a 4 overall and would like to try their catfish next time unless it's a Wednesday or a Thursday. read more

Granny Dee's is the real deal. This plane sits in the same place as the old Cisco's Taqueria. The place has been somewhat remodeled. I ordered the fish plate with cabbage and mac & cheese. Everything tasted fresh. They don't fry the fish until it's ordered so it may take a bit of time to get your food -- to me, it is worth it for the freshness. We have really enjoyed the food here. The SERVICE is TOP NOTCH! You can feel that they really care about the customers. I can appreciate how they let the flavor of the food shine through. Others use WAY too much seasoning and we typically don't go back. I never get a chance to take pictures of their food because I try to make it home with it. By the time I arrive my stomach is turning flips and I can't think of anything but eating. I'm just saying! The smothered pork chops were just awesome. I love the restaurant I love the ladies I think if they would back off on the sodium I would come more often. It's one of the most wholesome Soulfood restaurants in town. They just used too much salt and there's been times. I bought the tea cakes, and they were good, except they had too much nutmeg in them, and the sweet potatoes were a little extra sweet but I think if they back down of the salt sugar and the nutmeg it would be perfect.
