I came here May 9th at 6:30pm for a celebratory dinner following my brother's graduation, and unfortunately, the experience was incredibly disappointing. The service was unacceptable. Our waitress' name was Madalin. Was dismissive and rude throughout the evening. When I politely asked to have an ingredient removed from a drink, she actually laughed at me and said I couldn't. For the rest of the night, our entire table was largely ignored, making it difficult to get even basic assistance. It took 30 minutes for our table to receive drinks. To make matters worse, the food was poor quality. Between the unprofessional service and the sub-par meal, it really put a damper on what should have been a special family occasion. I got the Ruben. The rye bread felt like it never touched a griddle. Lukewarm corned beef and sauerkraut straight out of a bag, priced at 20 bucks. It would have been fine at 8.75. Here for a work trip and had to try this Duluth institution. I came twice as I wasn't super impressed the first time but thought it might be my choice of entree. It has a fun Americana vibe with a sizeable bar and booth seating. Both times I got the onion soup. The first time I got the Cajun chicken over wild rice and the second time the Reuben with fries. The onion soup is great- very cheesy with a bread that manages to stay firm/crisp even though I let it sit awhile. Both entrees were just kinda bland. The Cajun chicken had no spice to it at all and I got maybe 4 pieces of andouille which was disappointing. The Reuben was bread heavy with barely any sauerkraut (which admittedly is the whole reason I get a Reuben). The specialty drinks were GREAT!! So all in all, I'd come back for drinks and soup but probably get dinner elsewhere. A bright a lot- the bartenders. Both times they were friendly, warm, and welcoming!!! read more

I have been to the Grandmas downtown and enjoyed the food. Assumed this would be similar. Fish fry was not good. Heavily breaded, fish wet, not tasty. I ate one piece and was done. Partner had pot pie- very salty- almost inedible. Salad was great. Wings were great. Waiter got some adjustment on the bill because of the saltiness of the pot pie which was appreciated. read more

The steak tips and mushroom appetizer was amazing. The wild rice stuffed mushrooms and of course the wild rice soup was all amazing. Not a great place to conduct interviews though. When asking for a quiet place they proceeded to seat loud parties next to me the first time. The next time I sat in the bar area which was much nicer and quieter and the service was much better. Definitely recommend the soup and those appetizers. Would come back for those when I'm in the area for work again. read more

We are from the Twin Cities and visit Grandma's every time we stay in Duluth. My favorite items are the wild rice stuffed mushrooms, total comfort food, and the steak cheese French. The bread on the SCF is amazing! I often order the mushrooms as an entree with a side salad. Tonight we ordered takeout, and unfortunately the side salad was missed on the order. I called to have it removed from our bill, and they insisted on driving it over to our hotel AND included a pice of cheesecake for the inconvenience! Never have I seen customer service to this degree. Thanks, Grandma's. We will be back again! read more

Nice atmosphere in a cool old building right on the waterfront just beneath the bridge. Bunch of antique kitchy type stuff hanging everywhere. Is a great bar but honestly the food was not all that. I had the Walleye fillet sandwich which tasted great and would have been heaven had it not been overcooked. Daughter had the adult mac & cheese which was great but also had the wild rice which had no flavor at all - though it looked great. Best part of our meal was the mozzarella sticks with a fantastic tomato basil marinara sauce. Bottom line: would be a great place to drink some wonderful beers and have some appetizers. A has been, tourist trap. Flashy and shinny on the outside and inside, but that's where it stops peeps. Once you get the food and start eating you will be shocked at how bad each and every dish has become. I mean, think of your worst truck stop dinner experience and add a doped out staff with a way over priced meal and that's what you will get. The overall meal, non of it has any flavor, or smell to it except the cold thickening grease forming around your food. They burger's are 1/5# dried out pre-cooked patties heated up. The food is served at room temp at best. The drinks are watered downed so bad you might as well just ordered water. Very high priced tourist trap that will leave you cleaned out in the wallet and bowl. Make sure that you have extra Pepto, wipes and bucket on hand prior eating at this location. How is this compared to McDonald's? What an insulate to McDonald's even to put this as a comparison. read more

This was my first time to Duluth and I had heard great things about Grandma's restaurant. I was however sorely disappointed. I got the sandwich that was essentially a Philly cheesesteak. It was grossly undercooked. My fries were also under-done. I didn't tell the waitress because it was quite busy inside, but I ate about 1/4 of the sandwich and left the least cooked pieces visiable on the plate. The waitress didn't even acknowledge that I barely ate anything. I would never return here and won't recommend it to anyone. I'm amazed this place has stayed open as long as they have. read more

Stopped for dinner tonight after a long day shopping. It was overcast but we get so few nice days we wanted to sit outside. The manager advised that we would not be able to do so, they didn't have a server that would be outside due to the weather but offered us a free desert to compensate. Dinner was very good as usual, the stuffed mushroom appetizer was extra cheesy and hot. Service was excellent, made the correction to my drink order quickly and without question. Love Grandma's. This location isn't nearly as touristy as the Canal park location, which is fine by us. Same food. Must haves for us are the wild rice stuffed mushrooms and the chicken wile rice soup. I don't get wild rice in California so this is what I get when I'm home in MN. Hubby's always been happy with their steaks; he asks for rare, and they give it to him very rare. He loves it. Kids love looking at all the different signs and stuff on the walls and ceiling (at the Canal Park location mostly). Grandma's is one of our regular must-stop spots when we are in Duluth. read more

As a native to Duluth the Grandma's chain tends to be pretty bland and over played, with little evolution in premise and food. The food however tends to be good and the service is average or above. The restaurants are well decorated. They do have seasonal options as well. If I were a tourist to Duluth I'm sure I'd end up at one, given their locales and atmosphere. However, as a native we tend to choose other options. read more

Marginal service and terrible food would sum it up for me. The prices were incredible, upscale prices for low scale food. The spaghetti dinner was 18.00! My French dip was fatty and full of gristle, appeared to be the type of beef you'd buy in a tub at the grocery store. The manager agreed and took it off my bill, but that sure didn't fill my tummy. My first visit will be my last. I'm sure they survive on tourists and out of towners as the poor quality of food and high prices reflect. read more

This food quality is like a typical "chain type" of restaurant (think TGI Friday or Denny's). Prices are higher than they should be. However there seems to be limited options in Duluth so if you are looking for something average and typical American diner this would be it. read more

I have to say I compare this restaurants to Denny's. When the French frys came to the table they were ice cold he did go back and replace him. Then I saw one of the servers eating FF off one of the plates going off . The onion rings were great read more
