They sat us all quickly and efficiently, food was fast and the service was great. The cheese curds are like crunchy cubes of heaven served with a side of ranch. I had the Reuben and I can say I'd absolutely order it again. There were tons of juicy pieces of their tender corned beef and tangy sauerkraut. The cheese was perfectly melty, and the sandwich itself wasn't overly sauced or greasy. My partner had a burger and it was cooked just as he ordered and well seasoned - he enjoyed it! Definitely more of an up-scale place but they have a beautiful view, picture 'vintage supper club' vibes. Booth and table seating is available. Came here after spending a day up north since my sister recommended it. It was a pretty slow day for a Sunday and our server was nice, but it took longer than usual for our drinks and even longer once we finally placed our food order. I'm glad there were vegan options but I noticed once I got my food I was missing my mixed veggies and I told the server about it. She brought out green beans, which is better than nothing but the picture shows mixed veggies. And my sister was missing bread from her meal as well so we had to request that as well. Late night dining in Duluth. Our flight was delayed and we arrived in Duluth later than expected. We were starving when we got there. It was late and one of the only things that was still serving food was Black Woods. They welcomed us in and got us drinks and we ordered food right away. We decided to share a salad and an appetizer. We had the toasted sesame chicken salad, and the bulldog bites. The bulldog bites were absolutely delicious and we would totally order this again. The sesame chicken salad was not that great. The chicken was cold and the lettuce was huge pieces of lettuce. Our server was fantastic and offered to get us something else, but we opted to keep the salad.. This is a great spot for fine dining with a relaxing atmosphere. The food is superb and there's a nice selection of wonderful entrees and drinks. We had the brussel sprouts and bacon for our appetizer. It was simple, yet so flavorful and tasty! Swung in for dinner on a Wednesday evening around 6:30pm. Plenty of people there, but not crowded. There is a good sized parking lot. The place is pretty clean, employees are quite friendly. One of our party was having a very hard time deciding what to order and our server was very patient with him. One person had the surf and turf which was very good, the steak was perfectly rare and the shrimp were delicious. Huge amount of food. Another person had the Swedish meatballs and seemed to enjoy them. I had Mac's meatloaf which was pretty good. We all had plenty of food to take home for a second meal. The main reason I give it four stars instead of five is the meatloaf. It looked like they had baked it prior and grilled it to warm it up. Black woods was a very pleasant surprise. Not having eaten at many Duluth restaurants, we stumbled upon this one and were treated with amazing service. The hostess went the extra mile, opening the door and storing the walker of my grandma. My food was very good - the Thai chicken sandwich was not something I'd ever seen, but was quite good and filling. The real star was the Dr Pepper mule, which tasted exactly like the soda. Worse anniversary dinner! We went to Duluth to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We had been to the Black Woods restaurant before we got married and we had really enjoyed it. So, I thought this would be a nice place to celebrate our anniversary dinner. My husband called the day before to make a reservation for 7pm on a Wednesday. He told them it was our 20th anniversary and asked for a nice table. They said they would do their best. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:05 and the host said our table would be ready soon. We were brought to a table looking at the Circle K gas station.Our waitress seemed less than friendly, she seemed almost irritated that we were there. She didn't welcome us or ask if we were celebrating anything. There was no smiling or friendly banter. I ordered the chicken and my husband got the pot roast. My chicken had leathery skin that was difficult to rip into. The meat was dry and I had to dip it in gravy to make it edible. The positive part was I didn't have to worry about over eating. My husband enjoyed his pot roast. As we left I needed to use the restroom. There was no toilet paper in the stall! This was a Wednesday night not a Saturday. I was so disappointed by the whole experience. I finally let the host know on the way out how disappointed we were with our visit. She said, "Ok." I probably should have asked to talk to a manager. We will never be going back. I will caution friends visiting Duluth to visit somewhere else. My wonderful husband did a redo dinner back in the cities and it was just what I hoped for. The turkey was bland and so were the mashed potatoes. I didn't care for the gravy and this is the first time I disliked stuffing. It didn't have good flavor and the texture was spongy. The cranberries were decent but the coleslaw was nothing like coleslaw. I didn't finish my meal. My husband had ribs, which he thought were good, but he said the rotisserie chicken wasn't flavorful so he didn't finish that. His side salad and dressing were good, though. Next level cheese curds, exclusively produced for the restaurant chain, were spot on. The Santino pasta as recommended by Tyler was a HUGE hit! The penne pasta was properly al dente and bathed in a cheesy sauce with just a touch of spice. The shrimp and bay scallops were expertly prepared and not cooked into a rubbery state. I opted for the walleye on a bed of wild rice and was very pleased with my choice. The bread that came with the meal even stood out. Soft with a bit of chew and accompanied by whipped butter with a hint of garlic. We loved the ambiance, the food, and especially the service. A great spot for lunch or dinner in Duluth for both the casual crowd or a classy crew. This location of Black Woods is particularly beautiful with a cool ambiance and big windows looking out towards Lake Superior. There is a cool bar area with televisions that make for a great place to relax for Happy Hour or to catch the game with a group of friends. The restaurant features large tables and small booths making it a great spot for groups of any size. There are even rooms that can be separated off if you have a large group outing for a work party, for example. As for the food, it's delicious. The menu is well thought out and provides a good variety. There is something for everyone. For the more fine dinning amongst us, the steak and steak combinations are delicious. If you're going more casual, the wings are great or even a burger always hits the spot! I enjoy the waffle fries, as well. We went Monday July 3rd and was seated with in ten minutes. Things only got better once we were seated. The waitress was fantastic. We knew what we were getting before we got there. My friend and I love their meatloaf and especially the B/W meatloaf with a Irish whiskey barbeque sauce. We didn't order appetizers because we wanted to be hungry when we got the meatloaf. And when it appeared it looked good and tasted better. The meatloaf was great the mashed potatoes and green beans were too. I was not expecting the corn bread loaf to be as good as it was with home made butter. The meatloaf was cooked perfectly just as I love it. It had a nice sear on them and I forgot there were two pieces. They gave us extra sauce and we were in heaven. I have never been to that Black woods since we usually go to the Two Harbors location. This was a bit fancier and could see the lake. Perfect food, service and ambiance. I only wish I had one where I lived. But it's worth the trip. My friend and I both said we will be making a day trip just to come to a couple of places. Just think we paid $16.00 dollars for this and I have paid more for for fast food and fast casual. The lemon garlic shrimp was tough & chewy, but edible. The steak tips on the other hand were not only inedible, they were smaller than the quartered mushrooms.
