Server was phenomenal. We loved him. The fish fry was the best we've ever had. Typical dive bar feeling inside.

Stopped in for a fish fry on my second weekend in town after moving to Duluth... What an impressive fish fry! I wasn't expecting it at all coming from Milwaukee fish fry my entire life. The fish was lightly coated and the tartar sauce is crazy delicious. The au gratin potatoes were so good!!! I highly recommend giving them a try! Can't wait to come back!

My family rarely took summer vacations; it was my dad's "busy time" for work. Instead, we skied. A lot. We'd travel around the Upper Midwest on weekends, throw in an occasional trip out West, but our "go to" local place was/is called "Mont du Lac", and it was at the other end of town from our house, on Minnesota highway 23, right after you left the city limits. We were there a lot as a family, but my most vivid memory of the place was it was the scene of the only head-on car collision I have been in, thankfully at low speed, and thankfully with my brother driving, and not me. Fast forward 5 decades, and at the entrance of the ski hill is a local tavern, which even though the highway in front of the joint is in Minnesota, due to a geographic anomaly, the tavern is on a little spit of land claimed by Wisconsin. The Wabegon (I have no idea what that means, unless it's a pun on "Wobegon") is open 7 days at varying hours, and serves a variety of bar favorites, including burgers and pizza. It's been perched there since 1932. Wabby Burgers start off with a 1/2 pound of fresh ground, and combinations of all ilks are available. Kawika said the basic cheeseburgert was very enjoyable. If you want to take the "scenic route" to Duluth from Minneapolis, hop off I-35 at Minnesota 23, and amble up this back road, stopping for a cool brew at the Wab.

Stopped by on a Sunday to have an afternoon drink and app. Bartender was super friendly and prompt on refills and getting us our food. It was clean and offered a good selection for a small bar. They offer Spotted Cow and Castle Danger on tap which was really popular. It is handicapped accessible and they sell off sale. There is a room for family dining if folks don't want to sit in the bar area.

Drummy basket. Ton of wings. Very good.

Awesome burger's and fries! So close to Mount Du Lac. The perfect after ski stop! It's friendly and homey like expected for a Wisconsin bar!

Just note on the name - Wabegon (Wabigwan, wabigwaan, waabigwaan) is an Ojibwe word for flowers.

Everything looked super cute but there were coloring and crayon scribbles on everything. It was on the books, the tables the displays etc. I asked a local friend and they said this is normal. When the waitress went to take our drink orders she was ok slightly rude. We looked at our friend and he said they aren't known for their service and can be a little rude. I asked if it's like Dicks Last Resort and he laughed and said no. I think she was okay after that and was like a standard waitress at more restaurants after . I would just say dont expect bending over backwards to make the customer number 1 service . I'm okay with that. They have some very interesting and yummy selections for burgers . I got excited for a blue cheese Burger. I will say that my Pattie was very well done and the bun was on point. The blue cheese dressing top.... Not what I want for a blue cheese burger . I was expecting the blue cheese crumble. The fries... bomb! Definitely get fries. Do I want to go back? Maybe if can sit outside on a nice day. Sort of got the ick sitting inside but it's because I'm not a dive bar kind of girl.

We were waited on by the bartender right away who gave great drink and food recommendations. Their entire menu is very unique from the cocktails to the apps to the various wings and burgers. Are you at a different cocktail and I had the orange shrimp which came with a popsicle in it which was incredible. It reminded me of the Flintstones push-ups from when I was a kid. We split the deal cheese cards and we all got a different burger to try so we could share. They smash style burgers and we really enjoyed them all (paul b'onion, wompling, whata Gouda). They also have four of their own house made sauces which were all incredible. The fries and Brussels on the side were also all delicious. The interior decor and painting murals on the wall are all super unique as well as the lights in the ceiling give a very cool vibe to the place. 10/10 recommend if you're looking for a burger or even a fun drink!

We sat at the end of the bar in front of the glass wash station. Our waitress was pleasant despite. She checked in with us a few times during our meal. The prices are comperable to other similar establishments but I feel the portions here make it one step above. The wings are the huge sized wings if you like those. The curly fries (for the 2nd time) were overcooked and crunchy. They have 1919 root beer on it's own tap! It was fun to just look around at the decor and play "I Spy". The restrooms were pleasant. Now, the part I hope the owner reads. There was a busboy, whom I feel may be family, "working" there. I surmised this because if I were one of those waitresses, I'd have had some WORDS long ago. I can honestly say this young man is probably costing you way more money than having him there, unless your sole reason is to keep him out of trouble...even so. He was very obviously working harder at not working than actually doing so. I feel like this is a very common example of our youth as a whole right now. He literally, for our ENTIRE stay (which took double the time as any usual meal does due to the kitchen being so slow) basically shuffled in front of us getting in the way of every waitress trying to do their job. He opened the coolers repeatedly turning labels, looking like he was checking stock, etc. I'm certain the bottles ended up being 4 degrees warmer, especially when he left the doors cracked open. Waitresses were carrying LOADS of dishes to the back and only occasionally, when he noticed, would he go back to the kitchen only to emerge right back in front of us. He seemed to like washing glasses though. Just one or two he'd slowly concentrate on them spending as much time as possible. Nothing like someone's face constantly inches from your food. Another time after coming from the back, he switched the big screen from football to car racing, which was also on the smaller TV. People were mildly watching the game. They had to ask a waitress to switch it back. When we were finished with our meals, we neatly stacked the tray/basket/silverware with the napkins on top, clearly indicating they were ready to be taken, at the edge of the bar, pretty much right under his nose as he washed glasses. Nope, the lightbulb didn't go on. A waitress came and took mine away. My Mom finished hers later and did the same. Still he didn't get a clue. I could see the frustration on the other's faces. I was exhausted just watching him do absolutely nothing. PLEASE teach this young man manners, consideration, work ethic, and teamwork. If he plans to go into management of any kind, nevermind, carry on. At the very least, find someplace else for him to be and alleviate the frustration for those employees who ARE trying to do their jobs. On the flip side, if I were to give the benefit of the doubt, perhaps he was doing his intended job of monitoring other employees to ensure everything is on the up and up and to report back. In any case, this seems to be going more into a rant than a review of the establishment. Love Gronk's in general and look forward for an opportunity to stop in when I'm in town. Don't miss out!

I had the special, a simple cheeseburger and fries. Simple it was not. This will now be my go-to place for a burger whenever I'm in town. The burger is never frozen, the fries are real and fresh cut (but they do it right and soak them in water). OMG, I was expecting a typical flat little burger and a half a dozen bites of fries...oh no, bring your appetite my friend! The burger was juicy and thick but also fully cooked. The fries were divine! They were golden brown with a perfect crisp, skin on for flavor, and not too skinny nor thick AND didn't leave me wanting more. I ALWAYS want more fries. I made the mistake of saying "no" to tomato and lettuce and onion. They are usually a little limp leaf of nearly white lettuce and a paper thin slice of lacy flavorless wet tomato. Nope, not here. I saw them preparing other baskets as I was sitting at the counter awaiting my order...the fixings were thick, bright, and crunchy! Don't skip it. I'm also super excited to try their other dinner selections like meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. I have a hunch the potatoes won't be instant. I'm curious about breakfast too, although I'm never in town that early. They have a small selection of desserts as well. They also serve my favorite root beer, 1919, along with 1919 cream soda which I didn't even know they had! Just like the quality and quantity of food, the service is what I remember it used to be. I was greeted with a genuine warm and welcome smile. I wad given an appropriate amount of time to decide before being pestered multiple times. My questions were answered without a look of annoyance and I wasn't made to feel like a bother. The small talk was personable and appropriate. Service sets the tone and I felt comfortable and belonging. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars was it kinda yucked me out nobody wore gloves at any point. Grabbing fistful of potatoes out of a bucket of water would require a type of dishwashing glove, and I get that they are fried in hot oil so that didn't bother me as much. It was more the handling the raw fixings without gloves and noting that the lettuce (as beautiful as it was), and I'm assuming the other vegetables, we're not washed prior. I don't think many restaurants do for the reason of preparation speed and ingredient longevity. That part bothers me everywhere because all I can think of is pesticides and germs. I don't typically end on a less than positive note but, I knew this one was going to be lengthy and people's attention spans short. I lied, I will say this...I left very happy and satisfied and NOT smelling of grease! In summary, GO!
