The bison was too charred and the steak knives would/couldn't cut it! When we brought this up to the waitress, she said the chef told them to make sure no one orders it more than medium. Came here again because of a birthday coupon, also, at this time the black bear buffet is not running full hours like it use to, actually we are glad they didn't so we were planning to go to red lobster instead, but opted to come here. anywho.....you walk in and your greeted with a very friendly host that seats you at a very fancy white linen covered table where we were quickly greeted by our very friendly waitress that brought us our drinks and took our order. We got the onion rings starter Big thick and hand breaded, how they got them so crispy is beyond me. the fish and chips meal we decided on , Crispy tempura haddock, coleslaw, crispy steak fries, two pieces buttered Texas toast. The buffet wait was hours long so we decided to have dinner here. The wait for our server was also long( mostly empty restaurant) but we really enjoyed our meal. The prime rib was excellent as was the soup and appetizers. It was a nice respite from the casino floor and we were able to eat in peace. The chicken wild rice soup was the best I had ever eaten and I have had that countless times elsewhere. We ordered a scallop appetizer that didn't specify that it came on top of mashed potatoes- we could have ended the meal there as it was all so decadent and rich. I wish we would have split the prime rib but we each had our own- huge slab of delicious meat with a delicious creamy horseradish. It was the perfect birthday dinner for my mom and she was offered a dessert that she had to decline as we were so full. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Stopped after a day in Duluth and did not have reservations. We got seated right away and were brought drinks and bread very quickly. We are pretty particular about food quality and this place did not disappoint. Crab cake appetizer was perfectly cooked and on par with authentic east coast crab cakes. She had the steak diane, which was flawlessly executed with a delicious demiglace. I had the trout special and it was fresh and creatively presented in a pistachio crust with delicious homemade tartar sauce. The only food that was less than amazing was the vegetable of the day, which consisted mostly of overcooked onions and zucchini. No big deal at all. I order a medium well NY strip steak. I came with fries and cooked veggies. When I got my steak it was well done. I asked for them to take it off my bill. I wanted to eat as the same time as my wife. They said they could either remake it or take the food away. Being hungry I decided to remake it. They took my plate away. They brought out my steak. It was medium well. However they forgot my veggie and potato. I asked for my other items. They only brought the potato. By the time I got my potato I was full from steak. Plus the potato was super hot. No veggies were brought. In the end I had to pay full price. Can say I'd ever eat here again. And we came here for Valentines date night. We had a reservation and a party of 10 for dinner for my grandma's birthday. I would have never picked an overpriced restaurant in a casino, but alas, it was not my choice. Also to note is that we were practically the only party in the restaurant when we were dining. The freak floods of June 2012 had just hit the area, so the place was mostly deserted. To begin, everyone in our party really liked the bread, except the lady of the hour (grandma) who thought it was too doughy. I especially liked the cranberry bread. This was the highlight of my dinner at Seven Fires. For entrees, most of our party, including myself, got the $20 special with the prime rib. Upon reading the menu, it seemed like a good value. Upon getting my food, I was sadly underwhelmed. Most of us got mashed potatoes as a side, and they were absolutely terrible. I generally love mashed potatoes, but honestly, these were inedible. They were so dry you could pick up your mound of potatoes in one chunk with your fork. The meal also came with green beans that were over buttered and rubbery. The temperature of my prime rib was fine, but it was at least half pure fat that I couldn't eat. Given that it was a pound of meat on my plate, I didn't need that extra 8 ounces anyway, but nonetheless, it was a very fatty cut of meat, and not in that yummy-tender-good fat-meaty way; it was just 2 inches of solid nasty white fat. See for yourself on the image I posted. I would rate my entree a 1. My dad and grandma both opted for steaks and seemed to enjoy those. My mom got the Walleye Allmandine as it is a Minnesota specialty, and she wasn't a big fan. The portion was large, but it was not seasoned well at all. For her side, she had wild rice and it was outrageously dry too, much like the mashed potatoes. My aunt had the salmon special with cajun seasoning and I wish I would have gotten that instead, she said it was good, and it looked and smelled good. The best thing I tasted from this restaurant was my husband's pasta special which was ridiculously simple: chicken al fresco. It literally was grilled chicken on a bed of spaghetti with a parmesan, garlic, olive oil sauce. Oh right, the service? It was fine, for a chain restaurant like Chili's or Olive Garden. I've come to expect something a little above-and-beyond from establishments like this, but she did her job. I was upset that considering our bill was over $400 and the restaurant was aware of it being my grandma's birthday, they didn't even bring her a complimentary dessert. A few people (including grandma) ordered coffee to finish their meal and this would have been a perfect opportunity to bring a small slice of cake for her. For the prices of this restaurant and the average service I simply cannot award it anything greater than 2 stars. It gives the illusion of being a 5 star steakhouse, but I assure you, it is not. read more

OK, so I travel a lot, and I have been to this restaurant more than 50 times in the last 10 years... I have to say that 90% of the time this restaurant is awesome! But lately under the newest management... there seems to be issues... I hope things improve and I hope they get good staff back onboard like they used to have... It used to be a friendly place to go and grab a cocktail and order food.... bartenders were always friendly and personable...... the last few times I have been here.... not so much..... the staff is more concerned with talking amongst themselves than talking to the customer. - the quality of the food has been cheapened also- it's still a pretty good place but it used to be great..... disappointed in the way the place is going....hope they improve or Grand Casino will get all of my business. read more

Buffet at black bear casino is delicious. This place is... Meh. With no reservations for 7, sat at the bar. Our server was actually a casino floor employee who was pulled in for one night at the bar to work. The guy was super friendly, but you can't put someone in the bar with no experience! We asked for the daily pasta selection and vegetable of the day, he didn't know, and given we were in a hurry just bypassed getting answers. Drinks took quite a bit to come, and I am comparing this to the quality the restaurant is trying to be-a 4 star restaurant. Our oysters were discounted from $7 to $4, and needless to say, bad choice! One of the people in our group ate the oysters, and continued to vomit all night and morning from food poisoning. From the appearance alone they did not look fresh, smell was foul, so shame on us for even eating it. Food poisoning is no laughing matter as she is still vomiting 14 hours after dinner. When the steaks/prime rib came out, I will say kudos, they were cooked great. But given how slow the service is, the prices, and the food poisoning, I just hope you make sure the food is not spoiled in the future. Kudos to our server for his friendliness though! read more

Expensive for the very low quality prime riMajority of the steak was fat and the server didn't seem to care even though she said they shouldn't of served that and still made me pay for it. I would not recommend. If you want a nice restaurant to eat at you should go into Duluth. If you want food at the casino the buffet and deli place was really good. read more

Hahaha what was I thinking here!? Instead of stopping by a local Subway Subs from my trip from Duluth to the twin cities, I thought - 'why not stop at the casino for a sandwich?' Woof ... I wish I hadn't. Apparently hoping for a healthy lunch option was too high of an expectation. All the sandwiches were soaked in butter and oil, and the entrees were just as loaded with calories/fat. I get it guys, the more salt and sugar, the happier the customer, but not in this case. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with a side salad. The bun came out soaked in butter and mayo, the chicken was smothered in cheese, and fries were added. On a positive note, the bar tender was an absolute sweetheart,and extremely attentive. I'm sorry for the tone in this review, but I think if this restaurant were to change things up, people would have more of a reason to stop by this casino before/after vacationing in Duluth. Up the quality of the bar food, and people will come. Just a thought. read more

I actually joined Yelp to counter some of the reviews of Seven Fires Steakhouse that I've seen on here, which I think are extremely harsh and unfair given that some are basing their reviews on major metropolitan areas such as NY or Minneapolis and comparing their steakhouses with this one. I do think there are probably some things Seven Fire could do to create a bit more intimate an environment here - such as move the front door entry from the casino and buffet line side to the side facing the hotel lobby -- that would cut the cigarette smoking from entering and quiet it some from the hustle and bustle of people going by to the casino floor. That said - we have not yet had a bad experience at Seven Fires. They have a very responsive wait staff, from the moment you arrive and the host staff seat you. We were there for another family event/celebration last night. We hadn't mentioned it to the staff but the waiter saw my wife's parents anniversary card sitting next to them - and wished them a happy anniversary -- at the end of the meal he brought a very nice layered chocolate cake slice out, decorated and with enough forks for all of us to share as a complimentary anniversary gift. A very nice touch to a nice evening. This was our fourth or fifth trip here. Despite the fact that almost everything on the menu is something I'd like to try, my wife and I went into this trip thinking we would each order something different and share...and once again went with the prime rib...which was fabulous. Our only criticism here would be that her's was too done but not enough to send back. The meal starts with amazing bread and a butter that is fabulous. We are basically low carb and avoid grains like that...until we go here! My father-in-law always order the lobster and last night was no different. It looks fabulous and he says despite his love of prime rib, he has to have the lobster here because it's so hard to find good lobster in our area, done right. One of these trips I will try it for myself, it looks great. Mother-in-law ordered steak diane I believe it's called. She said it was delicious - but again, was done more than the medium well she was hoping for. Not enough to send it back, but just outside of what she was hoping for. My wife's daughter ordered the walleye. Though she said it was very good, there were still bones which she didn't like but sort of par for the course sometimes with fish. We did order drinks prior to our meal and I have to point out that it's hard to find that perfect martini - and this is one of the places that do them right. Grey Goose, extra dirty...oh sooooo good. We will be back. They do a nice job - a good experience, nice environment overall and in our area it's next to impossible to find a restaurant like this so we're pleased they're here. read more

This spot is poorly managed. We came in at 7:30 on a Saturday evening after a day full of golfing and this lady refused to seat us because they closed at 8. We tried to call ahead for reservation,unfortunately our calls went unanswered from both our room and our cell phones. We were asked if we made reservations once we arrived and I explained to her that we tried multiple times and to no avail. I would encourage that they extend the hours, and answer the phone. I understand that the economy is just now opening up but at the same time it would've been better for hospitality and business if they had just sat people until closing. read more

This was our question for the evening: "Are we REALLY in Minnesota?" We live in Washington, D.C., and although I am from Minnesota originally, our dining experiences in this state have always been less than stellar (an understatement) for many years. Granted we don't tend to stick around the Twin Cities area for more than a day but, rather, head "up north" as soon as possible to my family's home in Aitkin. We've known Minnesota for many years as the land of bland food. Decent and sometimes not so decent. Definitely nothing that would ever stand out as memorable. Two nights at Black Bear Casino Resort, owned by the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe (located just 18 or so miles west of Duluth), has changed our minds forever about FINE DINING in northern Minnesota. We enjoyed two absolutely superb dinners two nights in a row at the small, yet beautifully appointed and well managed Seven Fires Restaurant, located just off the casino floor. The decor was contemporary and elegant. The service was friendly, polished, and impeccable. But, the cuisine...that was the most surprising of all. From perfectly prepared Caprese salads (garnished with gorgeous live orchids) to penne pasta alfredo with grilled chicken (out of this world) to veal with eggplant (I've never had such good veal anywhere) to a delectable tiramisu...everything was wonderful. These were just a few of the dishes we sampled. The entire menu was filled with enticing dishes - it was honestly difficult to make a decision. What a chef! We could do nothing but shake our heads and wonder the whole time: "Are we REALLY in Minnesota?" This restaurant is an incredible find -- even better than a lot of places that we've eaten in D.C. I hope the people of this area realize what a gem they have here at the Seven Fires Steakhouse. As I told our lovely server Connie: "These are the best meals we've EVER had in Minnesota." We also stayed at the casino hotel for two nights. It did not disappoint. Everything here is a cut above any other place we've ever stayed in Minnesota. Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. Its semi fancy place with white tableclothes and fixings on the table. The restaurant is located next to the casino buffet. We ordered the prime rib, which was a 20oz for $20. Ordered it medium rare and while it looked good, you could really only eat the outter most section. Both orders were basically all so tuff you couldn't eat the rest. Good baked potato and tossed salad. Service was good but we wont be back because of the food. read more

If your looking for a decent steak at a decent price nice ambience satisfactory service this is the place. You actually forget your in a casino, always get table by cooks or on the side. The lobster looked great, prime rib, it's prime fat and very easily not cooked to perfection, but is good. The steaks seemed to change in quality from 2 years ago but stuff changes so does bottom line as you can see in the hotel. Stay in tower, other side has had csi unit at some point im sure, but the restaurant is clean elegant and good for a mood change. Not up to the $30 plate standard. Bread served before dinner - could have bought it at Safeway Wedge salad. Warned by the waiter that it came dry with bleu cheese crumbles and order the bleu cheese dressing to go with it, which did not improve matters at all. Note to chief - go to Outback and order the wedge salad and imitate it, you'll be much better off that what you are serving. French Onion soup. Very, very dark almost black. Some people might approve of that. While the cheese was good, some actual onions and bread in the soup would have made it better. I felt I was eating something closer to a lite gravy. Stuffed boneless chicken - not boneless, but okay. I really don't like leg meat much, otherwise okay, light on stuffing which is was good and why I ordered this dish. Mistake on my part Vegetables - fresh Partners petite fillet medium rare was best part of meal. Potatoes au gratin side dish. Was that made with cheese whiz? This was really, really something that need work in the kitchen. 3 stars for serving a good steak, otherwise it would have been a disaster. I did leave wishing we had used the buffet.
