I felt that Mike, the owner, was able to explain the rationale behind each part of the price. I talked to two movers before settling on Grand merci and both gave low-ball quotes and when they arrived at my apartment hiked the price up a TON. Almost double! I don't even know if this business is still operating. I moved out of NY a year ago and I just saw my first review of them and wanted to write an update... and a thank you. I kept the magnet for this business on my fridge for 8 years. Many roommates called them. Every time someone moved, this team was wonderful. There was even one time when a roommate called them and lied to them about how much she had for her move. (I was very bothered as were roommates. She wasn't allowed to renew her contract there for a reason.) Still, the men showed up with a large truck and honored their original quote. To top things off, where she was moving to, she had several stair cases that she did not tell them about! I was very upset when I found out because this business and the men were so good to other roommates over the years. So, for that experience- to Stanley and the owners, I am sorry. I hired this company to move me from Brooklyn to Long Island City. From what I can tell, they seem to have the most reasonable pricing. That being said, you do get what you pay for. The move didn't go completely without a hitch, but for the price you really can't beat it. I think they tend to overbook, so unfortunately the move happened an hour later than expected, however they were good about staying in touch and letting us know about the delay, which I appreciated. Another thing that was a little bothersome was that I was initially quoted for two movers, but instead three showed up, which obviously affected the price. In the end it worked out fine and the move went faster and more pain free having the extra help. I think they also added additional fees that weren't initially mentioned, though I'm not entirely sure for what. Apart from that, everything was great. The movers were very nice and came prepared with tools and packing materials. They were quick and efficient, and moved everything in neatly. No broken items or scratched up hallways. I would recommend this company to those looking for moving services that don't want to spend an arm and a leg, and who are ok with being a little more laid back about the process. What I mean is, if you're paying these kinds of prices, don't expect perfection or the professionalism you might find with a company charging double or triple. I arranged for the service over a phone conversation with one member of the team: told him specifically that moving out of a walk up building on the 5th floor and moving in into an apartment building with an elevator. However, when his partner arrived an hour later from the arranged time, he informed me that he wasn't aware of the stairs and he would have to charge me extra. I don't care about little extra they charged me, but I do care the fact that they didn't respect the initial deal. I have a few furniture, but a lot of clothes and books. It took them over 5 hours to bring my staff from a studio apartment. Then another 2 hours to get from UES to Fort Lee, NJ "too much traffic." I know NYC can be very congested, so I can't comment. And another 2 hours to unload and bring my staff into the apartment. I had a few dishes broken, on my labeled with red marker "Fragile" boxes. However, it could have been my own mistake of poor packing. The guys took apart my love seat and bed, and once in the new apartment, assembled them back together. That was very helpful. Thank you. Be aware of extra charges for gas/stairs/toll/driving back... I spent way more than initially anticipated. Overall everything worked out, they finished the job, but I wouldn't hire them again. They have been extremely pushy. I've been very exhausted mentally and physically with this move, but the guy insisted I leave a Yelp review the day of the move. When I didn't do it, he called and sent me text message the next day. I had to go to work the next day @5am, this isn't my day's priority! Mark and the other mover whose name I can't remember were AWESOME. Seriously. We were absolutely exhausted and hadn't planned for using movers - so we called them super last minute (they came within the hour). We were moving from Chinatown to Brooklyn, and we didn't even need a truck - just two guys for labor for about an hour (getting the truck emptied and mattress/bags up a 4th floor walk-up.) Even better - they are waaay way way cheaper than their craigslist last-minute competitors!! Another company almost sucked us into paying $220 for 2 guys for *up* to 2 hours while these guys got EVERYTHING done in LESS than an hour, and then put together my bed for me - all for only $55! because they're fantastic. True to the pace of NYC, i needed IMMEDIATE help moving. True to this city's hustle, plenty of companies were ready to rip me off. Luckily, Grand Merci is WAY above that & they saved the day! Within a few minutes, they quoted me the best rate I'd heard, having called more than 7 services. The best part is that they treated me like a person, not someone whose last-minute desperation they could chastise and capitalize on (as many of the other companies i called attempted to do). It's tough to find respect these days, so i truly appreciate the kindness of Grand Merci's employees. Mark & Pete promptly met me at the pick-up location (actually, they were there early- waiting for me!), they thoughtfully eyed what needed to be done, then swiftly disassembled & packed everything carefully in their truck, reassembling it beautifully in my apartment. They were totally cool with the walk-ups, the parking, the way i wanted things arranged. I understood from the start they cared about helping me, not just taking my money. Mark & Pete are a gracious, efficient duo- and if that's any indication of their company, than you are in GREAT hands. I recommend those fine men and this company thoroughly, and will ABSOLUTELY use them if i ever need help moving again. They just moved me literally across the street and in that time managed to over charge me (they charged for their estimated 6 hours of work instead of actual 4.5 hours of work). I also realized that the reason the movers were so insistent on me paying before hand and then rushing out and leaving me moving all my stuff in the middle of my living room was because they wanted to distract me from the huge scratch they left in my bedroom TV. By distracting me, they tried to escape liability. Then when I called to try and rectify the problem, I was interrupted and yelled at to the point where I had to hang up the phone out of fury. I really wish that my move had turned out like those of the other patrons because on top of being overcharged, I now have to discard a $2,000 television. read more

Guys mostly worked very hard. Issue with the company is lacy of transparency vs. some shadiness. First they sent more men than requested. More importantly, when the move was over, they brought up a "policy" that travel time is included in the time you are charged for. Alex arranged my small storage room to put more stuff there, so that I didn't have to spend more $ to get a bigger room. It seemed impossible, but he and his men made it happen! The worst moving experience possible. I am convinced the majority of these reviews are fake, since one of the staff members bragged about how positive the yelp reviews are. This company is completely incompetent. The movers who later came in to unpack our storage facility and saw Grand Merci's work, called them, "an embarrassment to the profession," and said it was the worst packing job they had ever seen. Our experience, which began with Grand Merci arriving over two hours late, short one person and with too small a truck, lasted through the night and included employees fighting with each other, falling asleep, hiding to smoke, disappearing for nearly an hour and even drinking directly out of our kettle. They had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Their English skills were seriously lacking. We contacted the company about our damaged furniture (which nearly all of it was-more than one leg had broken off), including pictures, and they have dodged our phone calls and emails for months. It would be better to throw out your belongings than to use them. Here is the email we wrote to the head of the company, Peter, which he has yet to receive a response . In fact, in initially speaking to Peter, he didn't even remember our experience at all, which is a testimony to how often these disasters must occur. As I mentioned, our property endured severe damage as a result of using your moving services.  This was due to many reasons.  Some of them include: 1. Staff arrived ill prepared with a serious lack of packing supplies, though I had clearly stated we would need them to pack our apartment.  As only one example, our own plastic garbage bags were used as padding. Items were thrown into garbage bags and shopping bags due to the lack of supplies. 2.  Staff arrived short-handed with 3 men instead of 4, and with a much smaller truck than necessary. 3. Your staff was clearly inexperienced and lacked knowledge on how to properly pack and transport items.  My own rugs were used to cover furniture, rather than furniture blankets.   Tables and chairs were not covered in their entirety.  Packing tape was used excessively and directly onto the finishing of furniture, despite repeated attempts to explain to the staff the concept of "wrapping backwards" for the first layer, to avoid damage caused by the adhesive 4. Care and attention was not given when packing items.  Many items were thrown into boxes (we had purchased as a backup) that were not the appropriate  size, though others were available.  Boxes were not closed properly.  Items and boxes were upside down. 5. The storage units were packed hapharzadly.  Fragile items were balanced inappropriately.   Care was not taken to ensure secure placement within the units.  As I mentioned, nearly all of our furniture is extensively damaged.  We are also missing a large antique mirror, which I can only assume had been shattered and discarded of when your team disappeared for nearly an hour on the way to the storage facility. read more

I had scheduled another mover from Craigslist to get a bed for me from Midtown West to my place on the Upper East Side and they bailed on me last minute. Fortunately I called Grand Merci and they were able to accommodate me within 2 hours. They picked up bed, brought it to me and assembled. Very nice and professional. It was more expensive than original mover i had scheduled, but at that point I just needed something to sleep on. We hired Grand Merci for both packing and moving services. I was hesitant because of the negative reviews but honestly, they were really really great. It was one of the most stress-free moves I have ever had. 3 movers showed up right on time at 8am. Their packing services, which we mainly needed for our kitchen, were quick and careful. They were all really friendly and professional. Our apartment building lobby had just been painted a few days before our move (of course) but the movers were so careful and did not leave a single mark on the wall. All of our furniture and items made it through the move without any damage. The move went smoothly and quickly. This moving company help me move from Harlem NY to Brooklyn NY April 2015. Due to traffic that were late however they phoned me and let me know they were stuck in traffic which was great. The movers were very professional and tried to move my items and fast as they could. They make you sign a form if you have Ikea items so that they are not liable if they break during the move since a lot of Ikea items do break. My 2 Ikea wardrobes did crack on both sides during the move, so that contract does protect them. They also offered me a 10% discount on my next move. Also I had a studio/1bedroom worth of furniture most of my stuff I sold before moving and the 22ft. truck was pack tight and some of my items I had to move in my own car. Make sure to get the biggest truck they have. *My only caution is, they quoted me a price, which should have included everything when I reserved the move, however when they arrived on the moving date they charged me for toll and gas which was supposed to have been included in my quote. Although I had my own moving supplies such as tape, they were helpful in taping any last minute loose items with there own tape and then charged me for that as well. Great moving company over all would use them again just make sure to confirm if all gas and tolls are included in your quote and make sure if you have any loose items to have them use your moving supplies instead of there's or you will be charged. read more

These guys were terrific - I had been scouring the city for movers that didn't cost $1000+ for a 1 bedroom and came across them thru a co-workers recommendation. Didn't have to go thru an extensive inventory list - just found them a week before our move and got a quote that was more than fair - 3 guys for $90/ hour!!?! unreal. They were SUPER punctual, showing up at the dot of noon as promised, and we moved our apartment from bushwick to ridgewood in about 5 hours. They took apart whatever needed to be adjusted to fit in the truck and made it all work in one trip (the truck was a little small, but they did it!). We had some pretty large pieces - including one very heavy credenza from the 1960s which they were super delicate with and we had no issues. I was a little confused about the total cost - on our email exchange i was told there were no additional fees - stairs, gas, the truck, etc -"We don't charge such things for local jobs" but when they showed up I was faced with $90 / hr for the movers and an additional $45 travel fee? All in all, our move came to $600, which was definitely better than many quotes I received, but still higher than expected. I would still completely recommend these guys. read more

My wife and I are in the process of closing on our first home. We had made reservations to move from Washington Heights to Bergen county. We had originally booked with a different company who cancelled on us because they were too busy. Grand Merci was available and arrived right on time. All three guys were very courteous and respectful. The only thing I would suggest is calling ahead to explain the size of your move. We had a large three bedroom and there was some confusion about the size of the truck needed. We could've had a bigger truck. I would be happy to book Grand Merci for a future move. We moved with Grand Merci Moving a bit more than a week ago. We booked them through Unpakt, which means we got guaranteed flat-rate price agreed on to begin with - and we chose them since they offered the lowest price for when/what/where we wanted to move. Under 700 for a small apartment's stuff from Manhattan to a NJ suburb. We booked them on Friday for a Tuesday move, but Grand Merci were great called us on Monday to confirm, as well as when they were stuck in traffic on their way over to us to update us with their ETA. When the movers arrived, and I'm pretty sure their names were Alex and Serge, first they asked me to sign the Bill of Lading, but since it said I was going to be signing that they delivered everything satisfactorily, I requested to sign it after the delivery, and that was accepted (after a call to the boss). After that, the two guys immediately went into super-efficient movers mode, wrapping things, taping what needed to be taped (including a few boxes we'd forgotten to tape) and moving things super fast. We were a little concerned with how fast they were moving everything, lest things would break, but they wrapped and blanketed everything that needed it and everything was in great shape upon arrival, even my husband's weighted electric keyboard which he'd been very concerned about giving to the movers. They were also really good about the fact that not everything in our place was going to be moved, and they even threw in taking my old broken down dresser down to the curb (to be thrown away) for free! Loading took about 2 hours, and unloading took 1 hour, for a small apartment's worth of stuff (starting from 6th floor in an elevator building and ending on the top floor of a 2-floor walk-up, with a really narrow landing on the top). That seemed to be pretty efficient. They also arrived at our destination (about a 45 minute drive away) moments before we did. There was a little bit of consternation over the issue of tolls, since according to Unpakt's policies tolls are included in the guaranteed price, but the guys who were doing our move insisted that it was supposed to be separate. Instead of fighting about it, we just made their tip a little larger than we had originally intended, and said it's the tolls and tips all together. I'm guessing that since Unpakt is really pretty new, they're just not used to working through it and weren't used to/aware of all of their policies. My advice is whether you book them through Unpakt or independently, just make sure you have a very clear idea from them from the outset what extra fees there might be. Summary: Communication: 4/5 Professionalism: 4/5 Efficiency: 5/5 Care in moving (i.e. not causing damage to our stuff or either place): 5/5 Overall would recommend these movers if you want a good, reasonable, careful and efficient move, just be sure that both you and they understand and are clear on pricing/fees to begin with. read more
