The pastries here are top notch. It's a great place to duck in and out and take advantage of their free pastry offers (i.e. buy six get one free). Sit down dining is ALWAYS packed and there is usually a line at the counter - staff moves everyone along quickly, though. We like to get their cinnamon rolls, of which they have at least three varieties, and their croissants. We also like their berry coffee cake. I like that they have local art on the walls. It can get noisy but as I mentioned, we usually duck in, grab a box of pastries, and go. Free convenient parking. read more

We randomly found this little bakery in Burien, and it turned out to be such a pleasant surprise! The place was packed when we got there, and it had that warm, friendly small-town bakery vibe. Everyone working there was kind and welcoming. My husband ordered the French Ham sandwich -- not quite like what you'd get in Paris, but definitely one of the top five French ham he's had in the U.S. I had the Turkey and Chutney sandwich, and it was excellent. The soft como bread paired so well with the cranberry chutney and roasted turkey, and the fresh, crunchy lettuce gave it a great texture. Prices were around $13-$17 per sandwich, not cheap, but the bread itself was quite reasonably priced. Most loaves were about $5-$7, which is a great deal compared to the usual $10 sourdoughs elsewhere. The bread was slightly smaller but still good value. The matcha latte was mild but enjoyable. This is my second trip to Grand Central Bakery, only because bakery Nouveau is closed on Mondays and tuesdays, and it will be my last. Got the marionberry jammer and a cinnamon roll with currants, and the only reason I bought that is because it wasn't raisins. The cinnamon roll, while warm, was either doughy in the middle or dry on the outside. The marionberry jammer, while looking delicious, was dry, crumbled apart and sorely lacking salt, if there was any salt at all. You want to like something that looks so good but you just can't when the quality isn't there. Sadly that was money wasted. read more

Much like your barista, not being able to read a simple name with five letters! This was clearly a new experience for me and not a good one! Hummm! Customer service is the key to any successful service orientated business, so if you're asking for somebody's name, you should either be able to spell it and read it and say it! Saying one's name correctly and not rolling your eyes and being dismissive would be a good start! Or don't bother, asking anyone name if you have a literacy problem. We stopped by here on the way from the airport. We stumbled upon it driving down the main street in Burien. It is your typical bakery with a decent amount of indoor seating. The line was out the door, but it moved quick and we were able to order some pastries, coffee, and sandwiches. It was crowded, but we were able to find a table easily as the turnover is steady. The coffee was just average, but my favorite item was the grilled cheese. It was complete with thick bread and multiple cheeses, I think. Super gooey and the price was very reasonable. You buss the tables yourself and there are convenient bins located near the restrooms, which were individual rooms, and clean. There was a homeless person who came in and they gave him food. Ordered a Blue Ribbon Sandwich with roast beef, 2 iced mochas, and a PB&J. The sandwich was really delicious. Tasted like everything was really fresh & homemade. Everything from the bread, to the thinly sliced roast beef, fresh veggies and good sauce. The mochas were creamy. Unfortunately the PB&J had stale tasting bread. The food is the best part about this place. Unfortunately this place wasn't very wheelchair friendly. The door is heavy to open. They give cups without lids, had to ask for some and ended up spilling coffee on my lap. Also felt a little annoying asking for them to be accommodating for disabilities. Most places you walk into will be willing to assist with doors, chairs or help you carry your items to a table when your in a wheelchair. Would have been a better experience if there was a little bit more help or accommodating. One girl at the register was really nice tho! read more

Our favorite Burien Bakery which I will attest is far superior than Bakery Nouveau (no shade!) What I look for in a bakery is balance and consistency. I don't want food so drenched in sugar and butter that I think I'll go into a coma; I want a sensible balance of sweet and savory - and that's what Grand Central delivers with all of its pastries, breads and sandwiches. I really appreciate how affordable they keep all their loaves, because I know how much blood, sweat, and tears goes into baking such perfect bread every time - it takes a masterful amount of focus. But you can get an AMAZING sourdough loaf here for $5 or less and that's the way it should be! All it needs is some butter or olive oil and that's the perfect snack/meal! I wish they re-structured the front of the store so the line was more organized and didn't have to block the door - but we have been coming here 10+ years and don't plan on stopping any time soon. Came in for a quick breakfast today. Overall interior was clean and definitely pretty busy inside. I didn't try out a pastry, but had the breakfast sausage sandwich. The biscuit on my sandwich was a little overdone so instead of it being flaky, it was more crispy. The sausage patty was good. Mine also didn't have cheese on it, and didn't even think about it until I saw another picture of the sandwich here on Yelp before I wrote my review. Overall I thought it was just okay. Came back to give them another try on a Thursday morning. I decided to dine in and work at their location this time around as well as I needed a quiet place to work. Upon entering, there were already a lot of people seated, but there was still room for my butt to sit and have a table for myself. I spent about 2 hours with a veggie quiche and a 12 oz chai. Both tasted just fine. Just wish the chai was a little less sugary. There were a significant number of people that started entering into the place at around 11 am to 12 pm for just a quick lunch to go, a place to chat with friends/family/coworkers, read, and/or a place to get work done. Just make sure when you are done with your table, pick after yourself as there is an area where you put your dishes away. It is a bit loud, due to the music and people talking, but it doesnt deter me from getting my work done. This is by far my favorite bakery! Everything is SO GOOD! My personal favorite are: ham and cheese croissant, Blue Ribbon sandwich, and the ginger molasses cookies. Don't get me wrong; peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies are great, too, and their Sour Rye bread is AMAZING. The staff is always super friendly, and very responsive both times I had a problem. Very low drink selection, I was allergic to most they have. The sandwich we got was the sausage egg on a bolo bun. Sausage gave frozen after taste vibes , egg was medium cooked and good and The bolo was buttery. I had reached the part of the day where it was a little late for lunch, but was starving and couldn't decide what I wanted so just started driving. I got as far as two blocks before I spotted a sandwich board and a full patio of happy sandwich-eating-patrons sitting beneath umbrellas. "Yes! A sandwich wins!" The bakery on the inside has ample seating and many goodies to choose from, but the new addition sammies caught my eye. Really, I think it said ,"Now with Avocado!" and that's what brought me in. Having recently pivoted back to more of a vegetarian lifestyle, I was super happy to see numerous options in sandwiches - though the meaty sandwiches were also very tempting. I got a Happy Garden (which is also vegan) and a Veggie Grinder to split back at home. The pea and bean spread on there was so flavorful and added a nice creamy texture. This is a hard store to change the rating for, but i've given it so many chances now and they keep missing for me. I'll order ahead every time and be given a window to pickup and purposely have to leave at least 10-15 minutes after that window to hopefully get my food in a reasonable amount of time. Today I thankfully only waited 10 minutes after my time but I don't recommend here if you're trying to grab a quick bite to eat and go to work. Only come if you're fine with a wait and looking to kill time. The food itself is good, so they def deserve 2 stars for the quality.
