Granval Scoop, Granville, MASS July 7, 2024 On my way home from Wildwood up near Cranberry Pond, my kids and I stopped by for a quick refresher. I've been going to Granval Scoop for years. We use it as a reward and inspiration to get up get going and we'll stop at Granval scoop. Most of the time it's Grampa or Bestafar or Ye Ye treating but tonight I treated. Our little one has an egg and peanut allergy so he does have to be careful. He asked for the cookie dough and it was great. No worries. My daughter asked for the Reeses Pieces and she loved that. So much she wouldn't give her old man a taste. I went for the Coffee Heath. This was delectable. I went this time with the knowledge from my last visit which was a much slower time and not many guests. I asked a big question about going from Cow to ice cream and the owner went to great lengths to educate me on the many nuances of the ice cream business. Absolutely fascinating. This time I had that knowledge and we were still alarmed at the wonderful taste in my mouth but the obtrusive smell coming from the animals. This is a memorable contrast. I found some shade from the oppressive heat and we watched the Llamas make funny faces and we also saw the peacock showing off big time. Every visit brings back memories. If you are in the mood for a $4+ ice cream cone of some of the utmost quality and thick rich creamy ice cream made on location, this is the place for all the families, kids, grandparents, bikers young people and world travelers. After spending the day in the Berkshires, we were so fortunate this place was still open. I loved the spacious area where you could survey all the amazing sounding flavors. I finally settled on mocha chip which was amazing. We went outside to see the farm animals including llamas and donkeys who came right up to us. So when you go to an ice cream place, where do you head first? The menu board to see what flavors they have? The freezer case to see what the goods look like? Well, that's not the case here. When we pulled into the parking lot of Gran-Val Scoop, we headed straight for the animals, because Gran-Val is a family destination with lots of entertainment options. It's really a combination zoo and working dairy. We must have seen fifty cows in the dairy barn munching on their hay. We saw pigs, piglets, goats, llamas, rabbits, turkeys, chickens, and more. The zoo is totally free and we saw quite a few delighted kiddies running around in wonder. There were a lot of kids on site last night at Gran-Val, because last night was movie night, with movies projected on the barn. The ice cream selection is large, but it's just one of the things you'll see in the central building. The staff was very helpful. here's also a snack bar, a frozen meat case, an ice cream cake freezer, and a giant pre-packed freezer, plus arts and crafts. Service was prompt and full of smiles. I mentioned that I saw a flavor on their website that wasn't offered when we visited, and someone promptly took my name and e-mail and promised to let me know when it was next scheduled for production. Excellent home made ice cream, and local honey available in the shop as well. The portions are generous, and the quality is superb. This is a family run business, so their livelihood depends the quality of your experience, So you know it will be out of this world. Good God! One of the best ice-cream parlors ever. Located on a historic farm, with a petting zoo full of lamas and their own herd of milking cows, the milk they use in making their ice cream is insanely fresh and you can definitely taste it here. I tried Pistachio and Sweet Cream, both were excellent but I think the stellar flavor here is Sweet Cream. I came here twice on a recent trip to the area and both times ordered it. I was even contemplating buying some of their pre-packaged pints of their home-made ice cream but since I don't have a freezer in my car, it would have been pointless for the long 5 hour drive back to Montreal. I like to eat good food, and I love ice cream. There are a few places that are a must to go to for good ice cream for me, and the Scoop is definitely one of them. They make their own ice cream from dairy from the cows on their farm. They have tons of delicious flavors and homemade waffle cones. Several of the family members still run the ice cream stand, and you can stop out and see some of the animals on their farm after you eat your ice cream indoors. It is nice to have a spot indoors because you never know when it's going to rain. It is also great that they have a clean restroom.There are a couple other ice cream stands I know of in the area that have decent ice cream, but don't have a restroom..Northside Creamery and Fini's in Westfield to name two. There's nothing like having soap and water to wash your hands after being outside before you eat your ice cream. Sometimes those kids just forget. Another great part about this stand, is that when you order a medium, you get two full scoops of ice cream on your cone. I could probably eat three or four scoops, but two scoops is a great amount after dinner or in place of dinner. :) As they expand, you can now get quarts and half gallons of their ice cream in the store. They offer sugar-free ice cream and sorbets. There's other farm merchandise such as milk and eggs there as well. You may also buy treats to feed the animals. They even have a cool goat 'treehouse'. read more

I recently ordered an ice cream cake from The Scoop for the first time, it was for my daughter's birthday. To say that this cake was perfect is an understatement. This cake was above and beyond what I thought I was going to get. It was absolutely delicious and well put together. The ice cream was delectable and creamy. Delicious, fresh ice cream, reasonable prices (a tad high, but good value), good service, yummy flavors if not unique (like Grassroots), homemade sundae sauces and whipped cream... all in a bucolic setting with a petting zoo. What's not to love? It's charming, close by, fun, and unique. We take all of our out-of-town friends here during the season, and have been coming for over a decade. We've never had a bad experience either with the ice cream or the service. One caveat - if you don't like farms or the smell of cows (and thus manure), don't come. It is not a pristine fake farm - this is a working dairy farm. So instead of focusing on the cows (and byproducts), enjoy your ice cream and head to the bunny hatch, or watch the goats. It's a delightful place to go. As an added plus, the bike riding along Route 189 is wonderfully flat and reasonably wide, with interesting paths and off-shoots. The Scoop makes the perfect pit stop for road riding on a summer afternoon. Did I mention Granville is a lovely little town as well (and that you can zip up to the town center and pick up homemade cheese at the Granville Store as well)? read more

You can buy it at a few elite locations (for example Millie's Convenience Store in Southwick, MA used to sell it, not sure if that's still true). Remember - it's seasonal. It's just down the street from the Granville Country Store - a great little place, particularly for really good cheese. If you're going to drive all the way out to Granville you'd have to be insane to not stop there too! It's true. It's an ice cream place, but it's as good as it gets (to quote Jack Nicholson). Real cows (as well as other animals) on the premises. You can visit them, as well as smell them.
