This place is perfection! The staff was warm and friendly and happily let us try a few different flavors so we would make the perfect selection for our cones! I'm not a big fan of orange flavor, but my husband got orange chocolate chip and it was delicious! The strawberry was creamy smooth, which my 9 year old appreciated, she doesn't like "chunks" of fruit in her ice cream. I was thrilled with the banana ice cream, and def will return to see what fun creations they dream up next time! I was bored during the Pandemic and I posted a Central CT Food Bucket List on Facebook. Some friends added their own places in the comments. My friend Michelle sang the praises of Grassroots Ice Cream in Granby. I think more than one friend echoed Michelle. Although I have many great ice cream options that are closer to my Newington home, I knew I needed to go. And I did visit, with my wife and Pasta the Dog. We loved it, but that was probably months before I started actively reviewing on Yelp. Today, squarely in the heart of my Yelp reviewing hobby, I returned and instantly recalled what I loved about the first visit. Grassroots has cool flavors that stand out. Flavors including Lime Chocolate Chip, Bergamot and Double Oreo. I ordered a double scoop of Goat Cheese Blackberry, and Biscoff, on a sugar cone. As I ate the ice cream, I savored the high quality ingredients. The Biscoff tasted like a Biscoff cookie, with deep buttery caramel notes and cookie swirls. Although I didn't so much taste Goat Cheese in the Goat Cheese BlackBerry, it did seem slightly good acidic like Buttermilk. The fruit notes were subtle and tasty. Service was friendly. The shop is cute and it's adjacent to a large grassy area with benches. My one note is that I would prefer if they took orders in front of the list of ice cream flavors like most places do. Rather, you order at the cash register on the side. Especially since I don't frequently visit Grassroots and the flavors change frequently, I would have felt more comfortable seeing the flavors as I ordered. Each time I have been here over this past year they come outside to you to take your order. You then give them your payment and they go back inside to prepare your order while you wait outside on the sidewalk or in your vehicle. It is seamless and convenient. Stopped in after a delicious meal at the nearby Tiger Belly Restaurant, we had to stop by the famous Grassroots Ice Cream for a sweet treat. Located in what you could imagine the downtown of Granby is, I had seen the large groups and line before going to dinner and was lucky to beat a rush of visitors after we had our dinner. I will say the system is a little wonky with many not knowing where to go for the line to order because the store is still currently closed to the public for inside but with the group that was surrounding the place I can imagine it'll get packed quick and with Covid best to be safe. You'll order on the right side of the building and then waiting for our order on the left; you'll be asking if you are in line often if you are standing by the building. I would suggest enjoying a nearby rock or the gazebo that is located a short walk at the town green or better yet ordering ahead and sitting in your cool car. Flavors change frequently & I'm referring missing the deep dark chocolate mousse ice cream my brother got. All the adults went with the scoop & half (yes, that's a size) & got two flavors each! I tried the Irish cream chocolate chip & the half scoop of pumpkin-oreo & loved every bite! My nieces even came to try my pumpkin & loved it too. Wish I never found this place! We are never in Granby and I don't even remember what made us stop because we were on a brewery mission. It really is that good!! I got the double Oreo and a half scoop of the pb bear tracks. All their flavors looked great, some very original. I wish they offered samples bc I'd be nervous to commit to a whole scoop of violet ice cream or honey butter sunflower or marscapone but I'm sure they're good. So excited I finally tried Grassroots Ice Cream - a CT institution!! We were in the area and of course had to stop! I ordered their one and a half scoop size which I really liked because you could try two different flavors without getting two full scoops. Not many places do that! I opted for flavors I don't typically see anywhere else: Garden Berry (which was vanilla with a berry swirl) and Goat Cheese Blackberry. OK WOW. Incredible, both of them!! Grassroots has always been a bright spot, and during quarantine it's no exception. My husband and I were taking a drive to Lyric Hill Farm for a laundry detergent restock (so worth it) and made sure a trip to Grassroots was on the day's agenda. I give them so, so much credit for the thoughtful consideration they've given to streamlining their social distancing processes. From entering the parking lot to receiving our ice cream, the entire process was completely seamless. All employees are wearing masks and once you drive in, you're directed on where to park (the parking spots are numbered which is a huge help). It looks like you can place your order onsite but we ordered online and arranged for curbside pickup. I received a text when my order was ready and was instructed to call the store. I gave my parking spot # and someone ran the items out to the driver's side window. Easy peasy! Traffic flow in and out was easy too - and they were plenty busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The ice cream was, as always, perfect. They have tons of inventive flavors but I went for simple chocolate, vanilla, hot fudge and whipped cream. Because everything is made fresh with high quality ingredients, it's truly unparalleled. My husband went for black coffee ice cream and mint oreo. Both exceptional (though I wouldn't have opted for both of those in the same cup). We also left with a pint of salted caramel ice cream to enjoy later on! I've had Grassroots ice cream at vendor events but hadn't been to their (relatively new) location until this past weekend, after checking out the nearby Brewery at Maple View Farm. Two different people recommended Grassroots knowing I'd be in the area, so there was no question. The one question I did have was - how do I choose which flavor?! My boyfriend got the Cardamom Cashew with Geranium in a chocolate covered cone and didn't speak until it was gone.. so needless to say, he enjoyed it. Their menu has such a creative range of flavors it took us quite some time to decide. But they allow you to have samples, so that helps the decision making process.
