Icy Rolls serves stir fried ice cream or rolled ice cream and bubble tea. This type of ice cream originated from Thailand. They use a mixture of cream, milk, sugar, and other ingredients; this mixture gets poured over a very cold ice pan. They constantly mix/stir it, then flatten it, and roll it up. After, toppings can be added onto it. I had the French toast which was very tasty; it was sweet and extra cold and reminded me of cinnamon toast crunch. I had one topping, the marshmallows, which I don't recommend since it was stale. I also had the taro boba tea sans the boba pearls; they didn't have any but I still had the taro tea and it was good. My toddler had the birthday cake flavored rolled ice cream and he loved it, especially with the m&m and gummy bear toppings. The location was convenient; it was in a plaza with plenty of parking. The employee was friendly. Overall, a good spot to get this type of specialty ice cream, without going to Thailand. read more

I wanted to love this place, especially after I'd bicycled 22 miles to try a scoop at Grassroots, only to find it's not open on Sundays. (Who do they think they are? Chik-Fil-A?) I opened Yelp and found this place. I chose the "Mango Girl," which is listed as having fresh mango. The friendly attendant took a cup of premixed cream, sugar, and whatever else goes into ice cream and some mango and poured it out on what looked like a pizza pan. I wasn't sure what she was up to, but watched in wonder as she went at this mixture with a couple metal spatulas, chopping, mixing, and chopping again (hence the "stir fried ice cream" claim) as the liquid began to freeze. It turns out that the "pizza pan" was wicked cold. She flattened and smoothed out the mixture just before it hardened, and then, scraped it off the pan in neat little rolls, and put about 6 or 7 little rolls in a paper bowl. We then moved to the toppings station where I was told to choose "up to 4" toppings... stuff like white chocolate chips, rice crispy bar, and some Japanese cookies and candies. All in: $8.00 including tax. Very intriguing. Unique for me, but here's the deal: the ice cream just wasn't very good. It was overly sweet and had no distinct flavor. I don't know if it was supposed to be vanilla with mango in it, mango with mango in it, or maybe sweet cream and mango. It was just sweet. Too sweet. No flavor. And, wicked cold. Which is good in concept, but not so good for eating ice cream. It was hard. It crumbled into dry bits when I tried to take a spoonful. So, I was left with not-so-great ice cream that was difficult to eat. As it warmed, it was not-so-good ice cream that was less difficult to eat. I give Icy Rolls a star for the ice cream, a star for the idea and presentation, and a star for being open at 2pm on Sunday. read more

The latest twist in the ice cream game has appeared in Granby- how about "Stir Fried" Thai style ice cream! What on earth is that? Well we checked it out tonight. They offer twelve different flavors that all include a vanilla milk base. The twelve varieties all cost $7 and include 4 toppings. We went with a Tarzan Lover (banana and Nutella). Here's what we saw. A hunk of banana and a scoop of Nutella were plopped on a small circular piece of metal that looked like a grill but was actually a super cold frozen surface. The banana was smushed into a paste, the vanilla base was poured on top, and spatulas mixed the three things together. The mix was stirred and chopped and flipped, reminding me of how I cook scrambled eggs or an omelet. Slowly the liquid changes texture as it freezes. Now the mix is spread super thin across the whole metal plate and scraped up into super hard frozen ice cream rolls. It's quite a show. The rolls are stood on end inside your cup, and final assembly is your choice of 4 toppings from the pretty big toppings bar. We split one serving and it was plenty of ice cream, so at $7 for two it was a pretty good value. It tasted great!! Lots of banana flavor and Nutella shavings in there. It was a lot of fun watching the young workers scrape and chop and flip their ingredients to undergo a metamorphosis from liquids to icy rolls before your eyeballs. Lots of fun, and plenty of ice cream for two to share. They've been open for just three weeks, and were pretty busy tonight. read more

Icy Rolls is tucked away in the corner of a small plaza. They have a nicely shaded outdoor seating area you'll walk by as you enter. This is the second place I've gone to that serves Thai iced rolls and I am a big fan of the first one, Absolute Zero in Northampton, MA. It's tough to not compare this to Absolute Zero. They have a fast paced, excited staff that are engaging and really make a show out of the whole process. The vibe is infectious and represents Northampton well. Juxtaposed with the staff at Icy Rolls is a disappointment. They were polite but you could tell that neither of them wanted to be there. They moved slowly and it was really boring to see them prepare something that normally looks so cool. They have 12 pre-made menu items, but of course you can customize them if you wish. No seasonal menu like Absolute Zero. The flavor selection is pretty standard and unadventurous. I ordered the Morning Coffee flavor. It was pretty good but you can tell the chocolate sauce is the cheap stuff and not freshly made or high quality. I'm giving it 3 stars because the ice cream was good but the atmosphere was lack luster. It's a great place to bring your kids and try it out if you've never experienced Thai iced rolls. Lastly, the sign outside says "Stir-Fried Ice Cream". I don't know where they got this from because this ice cream is in no way fried. read more

I couldn't wait to try Icy Rolls - I'd seen other ice cream roll places and thought it'd be amazing. It was amazingly... expensive. Imagine a giant crepe or tortilla pan but it's cold instead of hot. You pick the flavor, they pour a melted sweet ice-cream over it, and make rolls out of it, then add a few toppings like at froyo places. And then you fork over a ton of money. I just don't get it. Go around the corner to Grassroots where you'll get really good homemade ice cream, or in the summer head up to the Gran-Val Scoop for equally wonderful ice cream. But melted ice cream rolls? It's all of the sugar of blah ice cream flavors without any of the light creamy goodness. And it's insanely expensive. I won't go again. You know it's bad when a place makes the froyo spot in Simsbury look cheap! read more

Checked this place out after having been to the WeHa location last year. Only one person working here at the time we arrived so we all had a bit of a wait but it was fun watching the process. For $7 each, S'mores, chocolate brownie, the hulk and salted caramel were our choices and everyone left happy. Brought my son and his girlfriend here after a baseball game last week. It was really fun to watch them make the rolls! At first I thought that the $7 price tag was super high, but as it turns out, you get additional toppings and a ton of ice cream. I had the Tarzan: banana, Nutella and vanilla. I added chocolate sauce, whipped cream, rice crispie treats and mochi. It was really delicious! My son had strawberry cheesecake, and his girlfriend had coffee. Overall, fun and tasty experience. I went here for the first time with my boyfriend and another couple. Right off the bad I noticed that it was a fixed price, so it's not like tcby or other frozen yogurt places where it's weighed. I believe it was 6-8 dollars which to me isn't bad at all. You get to pick what flavor you want, then they do the little show where they roll it up for you. I think it's a fun experience and not expensive like most other ice cream places. At the end they put on the whipped cream and whatever usually comes with the flavor you asked for then you're allowed to pick up to 4 extra toppings! Mine was the s'mores which game with a big toasted marshmallow which was really delicious. My bf got the brownie one which he ate in less than a minute lol. Cool concept but not the best ice cream. I was visiting from New York and the rolled ice cream craze hadn't reached our part of the state yet. I was interested to say the least so I stopped in one night for dessert. You get to pick your flavor, and watch the make it literally from scratch with these wicked cold plates that are like -30 degrees. You can also choose like five toppings which is more than enough. You get about six rolls of ice cream. It's literally just ice cream flattened out and rolled up. It's all an image thing. The service was alright. Just the taste of the ice cream wasn't the greatest. Delicious ice cream! I've had rolled ice cream a few times and this is the best I've had so far. Tried the Mango Girl. It had chunks of fresh sweet mango and the vanilla ice cream was flavorful and creamy. Lots of awesome flavor combos and they have Dairy free options and bubble tea as well.
