You can sit and enjoy it outside at the several available tables. There's no going inside. This ice cream is hand crafted in Granville, MA. They're called Gran-Val Scoop. They have plenty more flavors available at their original location. At the Alley Scoop they have some really fun original flavors, such as Maple Bacon and Lavender Honey. I got the Strawberry and the Brownie Dough. The one scoop in a cup is a very generous portion. This was very chocolatey, with brownie pieces and white chocolate pieces. So tasty, even though chocolate isn't my first pick. The strawberry was your classic, sweet strawberry. I would love to return next month to see what seasonal flavors they would have.

"Sneakin' Sally through the alley Trying to keep her out of…read moresight" (Robert Palmer) Opened in May, the Alley Scoop isn't an ice cream shop in the traditional sense, it's basically an outdoor ordering counter located in an alley next to The Bean 226 in downtown Windsor Center. There were about half a dozen benches and tables in the alley, and a like number on the sidewalk on Broad Street. They had fifteen ice cream flavors available, plus two sorbets, two vegan flavors, and a Banana Sugar Free choice. Floats, shakes, coffee blends, sundaes, a cookie sandwich, and a waffle concoction round out their product line. We each had a waffle cone - Butter Crunch (almond candy and butterscotch ice cream) and Caramel Pretzel (Vanilla ice cream with caramel ribbons and sweet and salty chocolate covered pretzel bits). The Caramel Pretzel was mine and it was really good, with a smooth and creamy vanilla base and plenty of those yummy chocolate pretzel bits and pieces. Their ice cream is homemade by the good folks at the Gran-Val Scoop in Granville, MA. Our single scoops on a sugar cone were $5 each.

Icy Rolls serves stir fried ice cream or rolled ice cream and bubble tea. This type of ice cream…read moreoriginated from Thailand. They use a mixture of cream, milk, sugar, and other ingredients; this mixture gets poured over a very cold ice pan. They constantly mix/stir it, then flatten it, and roll it up. After, toppings can be added onto it. I had the French toast which was very tasty; it was sweet and extra cold and reminded me of cinnamon toast crunch. I had one topping, the marshmallows, which I don't recommend since it was stale. I also had the taro boba tea sans the boba pearls; they didn't have any but I still had the taro tea and it was good. My toddler had the birthday cake flavored rolled ice cream and he loved it, especially with the m&m and gummy bear toppings. The location was convenient; it was in a plaza with plenty of parking. The employee was friendly. Overall, a good spot to get this type of specialty ice cream, without going to Thailand.

I opened Yelp and found this place. I chose the "Mango Girl," which is listed as having fresh mango. The friendly attendant took a cup of premixed cream, sugar, and whatever else goes into ice cream and some mango and poured it out on what looked like a pizza pan. I wasn't sure what she was up to, but watched in wonder as she went at this mixture with a couple metal spatulas, chopping, mixing, and chopping again (hence the "stir fried ice cream" claim) as the liquid began to freeze. It turns out that the "pizza pan" was wicked cold. She flattened and smoothed out the mixture just before it hardened, and then, scraped it off the pan in neat little rolls, and put about 6 or 7 little rolls in a paper bowl. We then moved to the toppings station where I was told to choose "up to 4" toppings... stuff like white chocolate chips, rice crispy bar, and some Japanese cookies and candies. All in: $8.00 including tax. Very intriguing. Unique for me, but here's the deal: the ice cream just wasn't very good. It was overly sweet and had no distinct flavor. I don't know if it was supposed to be vanilla with mango in it, mango with mango in it, or maybe sweet cream and mango. It was just sweet. Too sweet. No flavor. And, wicked cold. Which is good in concept, but not so good for eating ice cream. It was hard. It crumbled into dry bits when I tried to take a spoonful. So, I was left with not-so-great ice cream that was difficult to eat. As it warmed, it was not-so-good ice cream that was less difficult to eat. I give Icy Rolls a star for the ice cream, a star for the idea and presentation, and a star for being open at 2pm on Sunday.

This is clearly a local favorite and it is set up at the entrance to a local family farm. This is where they sort of lost me because I grew up on a farm. These places are never the entertainment for me that they are to others. But I understand the appeal to the local community and the length of the lines to buy ice cream in summer is a supporting proof of that. Sadly they have limited flavors and you cannot see or taste them before choosing, as most all of our ice cream places at home have available. I saw only a few on the list that I would order and chose the coffee flavor, hoping it was light in color and flavor. It was not. This is a problem for the caffeine low tolerance folks so don't choose it if you are one like me. There were few fruit flavors too, which surprised me in summer. The people were nice, the servings ample and the line moved quickly. There is seating at wooden picnic tables which face a fenced area where there are some animals to see. I think city residents would clearly enjoy this part more than I did. They serve cones and cups, but on such a hot day they recommended cups as safer though one of our hosts chose the cone anyway. I might look further for ice cream should we go back again. But the quality was fine and the portions substantial and probably more than I needed anyway. We all finished our ice cream and I was glad we could reach it so quickly.
