With that being said, be sure to pick someone who will make those hours of sitting still worth while!! I went with Grace Lin studio at my aunt's recommendation. Her patients who had recently gotten married sang their praises about the studio. I worked with Olivia for my hair and makeup. I naturally have fine hair that was on the thinner side. I was concerned about obtaining believable volume in my hair Olivia utilized just a few clips of extensions in my hair (I used Luxy extensions) and blended them into my updo. My hair lasted all night through running, clipping and removing a veil multiple, multiple times, and dancing. All of my friends complimented my hair (and makeup) and none of them realized that I had extensions in there because of how natural it looked My makeup looked like an elevated version of how I like to usually do my makeup, so I felt very "me" but special at the same time. Olivia was easy to work with-she listened to my ideas on how I wanted my hair and makeup to look, while offering thoughtful and honest suggestions on how to make my ideas as achievable and realistic as possible. I hired Grace Lin Make Up & Hair Studio for our engagement shoot and was looking for someone in Pasadena that specialized in working with asian faces/hair. I provided a presentation of my current no makeup face + hair down, the dresses I was wearing, and my inspo. I met my makeup artist, Kaka, bright and early at the Pasadena studio and immediately we got to work. I provided a smokey makeup look, but I've never really done professional makeup before and wasn't super used to the bold makeup look on me. My makeup artist was receptive to me asking for the nose contour to be removed, and I learned a lot after the session about what I would ask for next time to meet my actual wedding day look goals. We got referral from a friend who works in the wedding industry and so I just booked with Grace for their bridal hair and makeup, without having a trial session first because browsing through the website, I can tell that they know how to do make up for Chinese brides. This was in 2019, and our wedding got postponed for obvious reasons but they offered to apply the deposit when I'm able to reschedule, which was very rare in my experience because the other vendors I booked did not honor that. Makeup lessons! I am someone who literally has no idea what she's doing when it comes to makeup, and I spend so much money buying things I see online just to test out and everything is the wrong color and I still have no idea what I'm doing. I knew it was best to just have someone teach me what to do for my face and create my own personal look. I was fortunate to find Grace on Yelp for small group lessons for me and my sister. We had to schedule a couple months out, but Grace worked with both of our schedules and even flew down from the Bay Area to accommodate us down in her Pasadena studio. Grace understands Asian faces and knows how to highlight and enhance our features including my monolid. She points out areas of unevenness and how to correct them so you know where to focus your attention in the future. Grace also spent a lot of time teaching my sister how to handle her uneven/protruding eyes due to her past medical history. She helps address your problem areas and provides solutions. Throughout the session, Grace sat in between me and my sister demoing and guiding us the entire time. Grace is happy to find the right colors and products for you, but if you have certain makeup that you typically use, she can also work with those and help pick the right colors in your palettes. And if you're like me and don't have any good brushes, Grace can also help purchase the items she recommends. At the very end, Grace will provide you with a summary with links to the products, colors, and instructions for recreating everything. My sister and I had a great time and feel like we learned a lot, and if anything, we were bummed that we had nowhere fancy to go that evening because we looked so good after the class! LOVE LOVE LOVE!! I'll admit, I was nervous at first because my previous experiences with professional makeup haven't been great (maybe those artists were relatively inexperienced with Asian faces). My hair also doesn't like to hold styles. I chose Grace Lin because their portfolio reflects a lot of Asian clients with a natural soft glam look that I've always admired. I booked hair and makeup for my engagement shoot as well as my wedding. Emailing with Grace was awesome. She's communicative, prompt, and kind, and organized everything. May was my artist for my engagement shoot, bridal trial, and wedding. She's gentle, efficient, and very highly skilled! Since I don't wear makeup, any changes to my face are very noticeable to me - textures, colors, everything. I wanted to look like an elevated or refined version of myself without going full on makeover. May's work was awesome. For my engagement shoot, I asked for a fluffy side braid and she delivered beautifully! I really liked the makeup and everything photographed well. Before my trial, Grace asked for my photographer's website so May could keep the photography style in mind while applying my makeup. This is such a wonderfully detail-oriented way to work! The trial went smoothly, I went to my first dress fitting right afterwards, and then had a meal. I checked my makeup after a few hours and realized that a matte finish would be better for me because the dewy/glowy finish adds an unflattering texture. My lashes also need extra security due to my monolids being so oily and heavy. I emailed Grace to give feedback and she was understanding and updated May to note the changes. On wedding day, May really delivered perfection. Lashes stayed in place, makeup was smooth and weightless with just the right amount of glam. I also had a floral headpiece that ended up being quite a bit bigger than I had originally anticipated, but May worked it into my hair effortlessly and securely. At the end of the night, my makeup hadn't budged and every strand of hair was still in place. I was so sad to undo everything! I cannot recommend Grace Lin and May enough. My friend and I met Grace through booking an instructional class with her. As someone who knows very little about makeup and only applies it less than 5x a year, I was blown away and also thankful by the end of our 2+ hour lesson! We learned about the importance of skin prepping before application of makeup. With each step in the makeup application process, she explained the reason behind certain products and the color theory behind it (for example, what shades to use when hiding blemishes,) and how it applies to our personal skin tone. She was thorough in not only explaining what products we were using, but also the particular technique and brush used to apply it to our face. Grace was patient with us as she demonstrated the application on one side of our face, and had us reapply it to the other side to practice. It was a lot of information to process for someone not used to makeup application, but she sent us notes and a product list after the class. We were also encouraged to take our own notes and videos to review for later use. Aside from makeup, she is also skilled in bridal hair, and was kind enough to provide me with tips on how and when to cut my hair before my wedding. She even introduced me to a hair stylist she trusts and has been working with for quite some time. Overall, Grace has a warm, genuine, and kind hearted personality. WOW! I decided to take a 1-1 lesson with Grace to learn how to put makeup on correctly for my face and she did wonders!! We spent 2 hours going over the proper skincare prep and then walked through each step of the makeup routine, step by step. She took the time to really explain what she was doing and then she watches you do it so she can correct your technique. She encourages you to record the session so you can go back and watch it later. She walked through skincare prep, color matching, and how to apply concealer, application, powder, bronzer, blush, highlighter, brows, liner, lashes, eyeshadow, mascara, lips and how to contour your face. I really wish I did this with Grace so long ago, but better late than never! She's also really responsive and quickly sent over links to all the products that you use so you don't have to guess. I have been viewing many YouTube or IG tutorial videos, but I have never had an one-on-one makeup lesson by a professional makeup artist. Once I found out that Grace has a makeup lesson, I was very excited to book one with my friend for a birthday gift. Grace is amazing! She is kind, meticulous with every details, talented, and has calming energy. She spent more than two hours to go over step-by-step guide to makeup from skin prep to the final look. She gave recommendations on types of products and brushes to use and different types of techniques to apply. She applied makeup in one side of our face so that we could practice the other side of our face. She answered all of our questions. I found Grace from Instagram and reached out to her only two weeks before the wedding date to see if she had availability. I had some issues with my initially hired makeup artist so I was worried about finding another makeup artist. Grace was very responsive to email and message, and I was so lucky that Grace was available on my wedding day. Grace sent me the detailed wedding package for what would be included and what would not, which makeup artist work with whom in which location at what time. Grace did my makeup and hair, and May and Cece did two moms' and one bridesmaid's makeup and hair. As I did not have enough time left before the wedding day, I did not go through the makeup trail. Before the wedding day, Grace set up an initial meeting with me to go over my expectations and concerns. Hairstyle was one thing I worried the most as I have short hair but wanted to have hair buns. Grace understood my concern and kept me calm by offering me hair extension and hair sponge to make my hair look perfect and natural. As I had an early morning wedding ceremony, the make up sessions have to be started at 4am, we were so impressed that Grace and her team show up on time. This is specifically for MAY: TLDR: experienced, professional, kind, patient, calming _________________________________ Where to start. Literally cannot say enough good things about her, but I'll break it down as best as I can. TRIAL SESSION: She was so kind and patient with me despite my tardiness. I'm not personally skilled at make-up, but I can tell she knew what she was doing. The level of detail was evident and she was able to efficiently figure out my preferences and how to really make me shine despite the lack of direction I gave her. She guided me through the whole process and provided me reassurance during my moments of uncertainty. In regards to my hair, she was able to give me those soft romantic effortless updo and curls that I really like. She gave me styling tips and suggestions on how I can improve the look of my hair for the day of my wedding. At the time, my hair was pretty untouched and she had suggested adding some color/highlights to really provide some contrast, which I'll discuss later. I have a lot of of hair that goes down to my waist, and in the past when i've gotten my hair done, it can look and feel too stiff/tight when I get an updo or half-up do. However, May was able to achieve flawlessly a neat, soft, effortless, and elegant up do for me. WEDDING DAY: Taking May's suggestion from my trial session, I had added highlights and color to my hair, and it sure made a difference The braided parts of my hair looked less flat and there was the illusion of textural contrast. For my make-up, I could not have been happier. As someone who's quite shy about my own appearances and find being the center of attention extremely uncomfortable, a picture is probably more telling. But she definitely gave me a boost in my confidence that day. Personally, what I loved most about my make-up that day was how light-weight it felt and how well it kept up throughout the night. I was running around the whole night, jumped around, and sweated, but still my make-up was intact after 15hrs. She also did a good job at minimizing the rosacea of mine and my husband's face. And did a great job making his eyebrows much more tamed. She also did a beautiful job on my mother's make-up! She is definitely not one to wear make-up, literally never wore foundation in her life. However, even she was able to tolerate and be very pleased in regards to her make-up. Really can't say enough wonderful things about May and hopefully the length of this review doesn't turn people away, but really couldn't be happier with May! Grace and her team did an incredible job for me, my 4 bridesmaids and my mom. I felt on top of the world on my wedding day and a big part of it was thanks to Grace and May. I was surprised how I could look with their talent. What they had to work with: I am Asian and have single eyelids with some creasing on the inner upper eyelid. My eyes are a bit droopy and on the smaller side. My eyelashes are long but straight, and they don't like to stay curled long. My face eats up makeup really fast. I have a lot of hair but the strands are thin and flat and gets oily quickly. What I wanted: transform my eyes so they didn't look sleepy/dead, have full long lasting coverage, and voluminous hair in a low bun. How they did it: their bridal package includes a trial session. Before we did the trial, Grace set up a virtual consultation to discuss the best type of make up to use and I was impressed but more importantly reassured that I was in good hands. May was my make up and hair artist. May also did the makeup for two of my bridesmaids. Rose worked on everyone's hair and Cece did makeup for 2 bridesmaids and my mom. Rose and Cece made my mom look so beautiful, I broke into tears when I saw her. I don't wear much makeup and especially false lashes. The way May applied them, I didn't feel burdened by them at all. The makeup lasted from 1pm to 2am and only needed minor touch ups. We used an airbrush foundation. My experience working with them: Grace Lin Makeup was on my bridesmaid's friend's wedding planner list of suggested vendors. I looked at 12 different make up artists/studios found through Yelp, Pinterest, Instagram, and word of mouth from friends before deciding to go with Grace Lin Makeup. I'm very cost conscious but trust me, they are worth it. Their make up style is typically soft glam and they try to preserve your natural look. Their portfolio had some very nice examples of clients with single eye lids. About 90% of their clients are Asian so they have a lot of experience dealing with Asian skin and hair. Grace was very responsive to my questions and never pushed me to book with her. She asked to see a picture of me to recommend a make up artist from her team who had the skills to create the look I wanted. May is so talented and great at what she does. Their experience and responsiveness had me feeling confident that I was in good hands the entire time. They were very open to feedback and found solutions specific to what I needed. When you're planning a wedding and have so much going on already, you want to be sure your makeup artist knows what they're doing and can make your vision come true. My wedding was yesterday and I had Grace, Mimi, and Rose as my bridal party's hair and makeup team and they were all wonderful. I am mixed race Asian with more asian-passing features and have always struggled finding makeup artists that know how to flatter smaller eyes. When I saw that Grace has worked a lot with Asian clients, I knew that I wanted to book her for my wedding. I met Grace at my hair/makeup trial and she worked hard to find the perfect formula to hide my under eye circles (they're bad!!) and the way she styled my hair was exactly how I wanted. On my wedding day Grace and her team drove from Pasadena to San Bernardino to my hotel and spent 5 hours working on my mom, 2 bridesmaids, myself and my 4 year old daughter. My bridesmaids and my mom absolutely loved their style and technique. They commented how fast Grace worked on their faces and how comfortable their false eyelashes felt on their eyes.
