Still enjoy coming to this Goodwill location. It serves a community as well as those out-of-towners who come off of 290 and enter North Austin. It is Central to a lot of good stuff and eateries nearby. We often come here on the weekends after stopping off for a bagel around the corner. It seems that many have followed us into here afterwards. There is a great amount of parking out front. The floor plan is open and spread out I like how they have switched up the organization of a layout. I can quickly lose my wife to the racks while I drop into the back area and comb over some of the local artifacts. Often I'm looking for antiques, old toys, some office equipment, and large scale frames. I go through my usual tracks and quickly find what I'm looking for or I end up re-organizing the shelves and put things in where they're supposed to be. The hired help does a decent job, but there are the few who just throw it up on the shelf and call it a day. There's so much donations in the back that they don't really mind where they place it because people like me will either put it in place or make a purchase. I used to snub those who went to Goodwill. They should be calling it. Good fortune instead. It's like urban mining. There are some really good finds. People toss out brand new items to worn through apparel. Sometimes even I find items that I would've bought 20 or 30 years ago and now I have it. My wife and I have made it into an enjoyable hobby to pass the time and reminisce on those things that have been past through the generations. read more

This is one of my favorite Goodwill stops due to the fact that there's always something new at this location because of the surrounding population. Although half the time I tend to walk out finding nothing, and sometimes I do find something worth a purchase. On some occasions , I have found some real gems, which is the reason I keep coming back. And if you're a senior, they do have a 30% off sale for you on Tuesday , however, books, records, and CDs are not included. read more

This store is gigantic and has so many options. If you come here, I have no doubt that you will be able to find exactly what you're looking for. The reason I docked a star is that this store has so many things marked up, all of the Madewell and free people dresses that I found were marked up to $34.99. There are still some good deals to be found if you spend the time to look slowly through the racks, but overall the pricing here is steep. read more

The last time I was in here the prices were absolutely outrageous. Used, battered games at $7-10, old tshirts selling for $10. Target stuff priced more expensive than it is in store. No. I spent about 1/3 of the time I normally spend in a goodwill store, left with nothing. Editing after the Goodwill response: Goodwill does provide some services but has also faced significant criticism over the high pay of their leadership vs the underpayment of the workforce (see Watchdog.org findings for 2013). It's known in the resell community that Goodwill is gearing up to provide a seller's platform and that most items that are identified as potentially worth something are shipped off to Goodwill corporate. This company has long stopped being an organization focused on charity and is one focused on profits - don't with me on that response. read more

This is your typical Goodwill store. Set up is the same as any other, with separate sections for used clothing (Halloween costumes get their own enormous space), books, furniture, household goods, sports equipment, with the ubiquitous bunch of kids' bikes outside just before the front entrance. The other day I found a Spode plate to add to my collection for a mere 99 cents. Similar plates were selling for $25 at another used/consignment store. So obviously yes, I'm a fan. read more

For being on the bigger side of traditional goodwills, there's pretty much nothing in regards to men's clothing. Also, the cashier was on her phone texting as new people were coming up to check out. I was the first person to say hi and she did a few seconds later after finishing her text. I don't know if she might have been having an emergency she needed to attend to, but still has a negative impact on customer service. read more

Semi good good will, a lot of clothes on the floor from falling off the hangers, only about %60 of the right sizes were in the right categories, but most importantly.....make sure you are in line to check out AT LEAST TEN MINUTES BEFORE they close or else you will have just about every employee yelling at the top of their lungs across the store to you saying "HEY YOU KNOW WE CLOSE IN 6 MINUTES.....HEY YOU KNOW WE CLOSE IN 5 MINUTES....HEY YOU BETTER GET IN LINE RIGHT NOW AND STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND CHECK OUT RIGHT NOW AT THE REGISTER!!" Heaven for bid it's 7:58pm and you're going through your 8 items in your cart (10 feet from the register) deciding what 4 or 5 items you want out of the 8 in your cart and are going to buy for about 30 seconds....the cashiers will let you know REAL QUICK "I don't care about if you know what you want to buy or not all I care about is going is going home, I'm either going you let you buy something in the next 30 seconds or you can just leave because what I do care about is going home so check out now in 30 seconds or just walk out the door and leave." I'm with Susie G on this one. I see those Goodwill commercials on TV that talk about helping the community by supporting the unemployed and job placement, but I never hear any more specifics or success stories about that stuff (do you?). It kind of makes one wonder if Goodwill is actually good"will", or good"profit"? I used to only visit Goodwill to donate my extra goods - thinking that someone would really benefit from these items. Since I never shopped there, my perception of Goodwill was positive - that they were there to help and service the community. In the past year I've spent more time at Goodwill - to find odd deals, looks for costumes, some minor shopping. What I found was a lot of rude employees, low morale, irrational policies, poor business decisions, and mgmt who regularly closes the store early - essentially turning away business during business hours. On one occasion I arrived @ 9:50pm and the manager (at this location) wouldn't let me in - even though the "OPEN" sign was still on and there were people inside. Ridiculous. A loosely ran business: there's no science behind their pricing, they just have a regular employee in the back (usually young and inexperienced) who prices items based off of what they feel. I've seen some whacked out pricing on furniture, electronics, and sporting equipment - only a few dollars cheaper than brand new items @ Macy's or Academy. They have no business sense or rationale: if you come across a damaged product - they won't negotiate on the price. Their process is to dismantle it, put it in the back, and send it off to a place called "Blue Hanger" which is the last stop for all hand-me-downs and junk (like a black hole). Case in point: I found a Chefmate 8 bottle Wine Refrigerator that was defective - it only cooled to 50 degrees instead of the supposed 44 degrees, the interior light didn't work, so there's no telling how long it would last. They priced it @ $25 (a brand new online ranges from $45 to $80). So I tried to negotiate by offering $15 for it as a final sale (that was worth it for me) - and was refused. The guy explained their policy and wouldn't budge. So I told him that I didn't get it - - you're supposed to optimize your profit and here you have a defective product that someone has offered to pay $15 for - but instead you reject it based on your policy and would rather take zero profit and dump it off to the black hole. WTF? That just doesn't make sense to me. And I've noticed an increase in pricing - especially on clothes. A friend of mine who frequents Goodwill told me that he can no longer afford to buy their products anymore. From now on I will donate my goods to a church or someone who really needs it as opposed to a business that overprices and has inept and self-defeating business processes. They get an extra star bump (to "2") because - on occasion - you can find a great deal. Example (at the 290 location): a left handed 1 Wood w/ graphite shaft (to replace my broken one) for $1.99 (yeah, I negotiated - they flexed because it was sitting there for 4 months) and a nice Rowenta Iron for $12! Now that's what I call a bargin! However, those examples are few and far between. read more

I have been here a few times since it is in my neighborhood. I tend to check out the kitchen section because you can find some nice gems in there if you are lucky. I guess that goes for any Goodwill though. This place smells like most Goodwills. Lots of cleaning stuff and that musty clothing smell you get from thrift stores. I have not gone through the clothing here, but they seem to have a huge assortment and a ton of womens stuff compared to guys stuff. Not too sure of the organization, but it looks like they do a good job of separating things by style and color. That is just guessing from my glances at the clothes on my way to the back where the kitchen stuff is at. The electronic section here is kind of a mess, but they usually are at most. There are plugs at the back wall where you can try stuff and most of the electronic stuff has a few days warranty in case it doesn't work right once you try your purchase at home They take credit and are usually pleasant while ringing you up which doesn't hurt one bit. This whole plaza is a discount area. Next door is a half price book store. :) read more

Before I moved to Austin, I didn't even know what Goodwill was. It's an awesome store--reversing the American consumer and throwaway culture to a donate/reuse/save money one! I like this Goodwill location because it has the largest square footage of the ones I've been to, is conveniently located in a central part of town (as well as my workplace), and I've found lots of nice glass bowls for my ducks from this location. Their items are also neatly displayed and arranged on shelves that are easy to view and within reach for most people. The chemical smell that hits you when you walk in is annoying but I guess it just means that all the products are sanitized. I am a little annoyed that some containers that are only $1 at Dollar Tree (where everything is $1) is $1.99 or even more here. Errol M is right--I should visit Dollar Tree more often. Pricing is odd. Sometimes, round Pyrex pie plates who are either identical or vary by 1 cm in diameter may be priced up to $2 or $3 difference. The heavy bakeware-type of glassware I buy ranges from $0.99 to $3.99. This Goodwill location seems to have a LOT of Halloween costumes--even more than the other locations. You also get to visit Half Price Books, Titaya's Thai Cuisine, and Great Hall Games in a short walk! Goodwill is located on the Southeast quadrant of the Koenig Ln @ North Lamar Blvd intersection. One of the best Goodwill stores around. Anywhere. Think of it: The local donors have both taste and dough. This is the "trickle-down" economy at its best: They buy the good stuff, donate it to make themselves feel better, and then WE get to rifle through the leftovers. But there are some good leftovers to be sure. My last visit: An almost-new Banana Republic long-sleeve button down for $5.99. Last season. Divine. (note I would never buy BR retail, not anymore. But I feel fine doing it here). I used to live right down the street, and it's always on my list for out-of-towners. Great housewares too (but of course more difficult if you're visiting). You will find hipsters, workers, families, and local musicians (who are not usually hipsters themselves unless they're some iteration of indie rock) all shopping for goodies. A five star Goodwill? Yes it is. This goodwill is large and I'm always surprised by something I find here, in a good way. It's clean too, which sets it apart from several other stores. The staff is friendly and eager to help you find that treasure you're looking for in the mountain of other things. Another great thing is their Halloween offerings. They have lots of masks and hats, but they have things like sport coats for less than $10 and other clothing options for costumes that look really cool. Why wear a plastic costume when you can dress in real clothes on the cheap? Really smart of them to capitalize on the holiday. Great place to browse and the nice thing is each time you come to the store, the inventory changes. I like to look through the t-shirts just to find the most obscure ones possible. Sooo every time I need to buy scrubs, the first place I go to is goodwill! I usually go to like three cause obviously it would be nice to have matching scrubs. Anyways, I really liked this goodwill, it was big and clean (for the most part). The best part was that it didn't reek of bleach when I came in. Selection: There is a nice selection of brand names for the clothes section. There's even new do supplies for those who needs that! I'm only reviewing for the scrubs, but I found all greys anatomy brand scrubs, which is usually about $20 per item. I got them $5 per item which is a steal!!! There are some dickies pants for $2 so I just bought that and a nice top. Overall I saw American eagle, charlottes russe and even Nike brands. Fitting room: I personally did not like the fitting room, the seating was dirty, but it's goodwill what do you expect? Employees: So I really liked every employee I met, they were all so nice and there was this one specific dude who was tall, a bit chubby and had a beard (white Caucasian), he was so nice to me! I was the only one waiting in line and he called any employee up to ring me up! I could've waited, but the fact that he did that was super nice. Overall I love goodwill, I never buy clothes new. This one however, is extremely clean, most of the clothes look to be in good condition, worn only a couple times. I was surprised by how many named brands this Goodwill had! This may seem like a long-winded review, but stick with me, it's a pretty good story. I am moving out of state and needed to clean out my garage last weekend. As I am digging through the boxes and piles of crap, I stumbled upon a few trash bags. These bags were full of items I had saved for my Ex. He was no ordinary Ex, we were together for 3 years. He asked my Dad if he could marry me, we lived together. He moved out, and in with another lady on the same day. Broke my poor little heart. We actually dated again not too long ago(stupid I know). And, of course, he left for another. I tried then to give him his stuff. The bags were full of clothes, shoes and just other random items. He wanted them, but never picked them up. I decided to take these bags to Goodwill, along with all the the stuffed animals and junk he gave me while we were together. I'm feeling pretty good about this, you know, letting go of the past. Fully moving on. I pull up to the receiving doors. I had a good friend with me, who was there for me when said Ex was around. I look inside, and say to my friend "That guy looks like (Ex dude's name)" She says "I don't think it does". He walks out, and to my surprise, it is the Ex dude. Woah, this is kind of awkward. I get out of the car, we say hello. Apparently he is now employed by the fine people at Goodwill Industries. I hand the bags over, tell him he should have picked up his stuff. Get in the car and leave. The cherry on top=He was the person who had to go through all of the donations. He had to pull every item out of those bags and decide if they were good enough for Goodwill, including his designer shoes and the Caterpillar he got me for valentines day. Break-ups are terrible little things. Unless you just narrowly escaped the grips of a remorseless sociopath who, it recently becomes clear, was married when you met, lied about college, and overlapped a relationship with a teenager on you. In which case, post-break-up, you'd be golden. In the event that making it out of that largely unscathed isn't enough for you, consider dropping off any reminder of him at Goodwill. The kind folks accepting materials will thank you for it. Sure, they'll never be able to return your 4.5 years of wondering why you never met his family, but a tax-ready receipt should help. You'll feel a sense of relief at your reclaimed closet space in the house he only populated with promises, crap and deceit. Future purchasers will appreciate said crap while perusing Goodwill's vast selection. And when you think about it, losing the $1.2k insurance check for your (in your name only) house's leaky roof because he fraudulently listed himself as your husband and cashed in... well, that's probably worth never seeing his scheming ass again. While you drop off the bags you can smile, recalling recent talks with the con where he badmouthed his current girlfriend's cooking, gracelessness, and lamented her inability to pick up either parents' native tongue. Aweee. You know all this because he told you. A man who will say anything to keep you in his pocket is a scary thing. He's her problem now. Look, a surprise: in one of his old books, some drawings for a wedding ring - the one he gave his wife that he later reused on you. Which happens to be a fake. Throw the earrings in with the fake ring, the books, the picture frames, the Rubix cube, the stupid wooden boxes and the shirt you met him in (the night you both specifically stated you were unmarried and single) and be done with it. When it all rolls out with a lie and keeps building, the crescendo is resounding. Think Talented Mr. Ripley, Matchpoint, Informant, Catch Me If You Can. See if he can whip out a certified diploma, logically explain away the wedding pictures, or deny his signature on that cashed insurance check... or his voice on recordings that belittle his new love. Nope. Because his new name's Crazy, and being rid of him and him-things is bound to fill you - nay, the entire world - with Goodwill. read more

I don't know if this is the largest Goodwill in Austin, but this place is pretty dang big. I stop by here whenever I need some kind of outfit for a theme party and I have always found what I'm looking for, no matter what it is. Heck, I even found the pieces I needed for my Halloween costume here. In that regard, this place is great. Pricing, on the other hand, seems high. I don't mean to say expensive, I just remember Goodwill being cheaper when I was a kid. I know that me being a kid wasn't all that long ago, but maybe it was long enough ago that they had to raise prices to keep up with inflation? Who knows. Like I said, certainly not expensive, just not Goodwill cheap like I was used to seeing. Maybe times have changed and those days are long gone. I sure hope not. With that being said, I do find excellent deals here. I have found multiple J. Crew and Banana Republic shorts in excellent condition for only $7.99 each. Compared to what you'd pay for those full price, that's a steal! I even once found a pair of Free People shorts for $12.99. See what I mean? Compared to retail, their pricing is a great deal, but when's the last time anyone ever paid more than $10 for any piece of clothing at Goodwill, especially a pair of shorts? Maybe I'm part of the problem - I buy these shorts at those prices, so the Goodwill market keeps selling them at those prices because that's what the market will bear. Dammit. Whatever. Those Banana Republic shorts had a safari animal print on them and they were too cute not to come home with me. They're my new favorite pair of shorts, so it was worth it. Thank you to whichever sorority girl purchased them, forgot them in the back of her closet, and then donated them to Goodwill. It used to be that Goodwill was our only option when it came to second hand clothes. These days though, it's last on my list. Yes Goodwill has gotten bigger and better. They now have an extensive collection of romance novels, the odd furniture piece or two, a massive array of costumes come Halloween, a new snazzy building. The problem is this. The prices. When a shirt at a Goodwill store costs as much as a shirt as a regular store- the problem becomes really evident. If I wanted new prices I would go to a chain retail establishment. Goodwill's selection is fairly large, especially at their newer stores and they really do have a bit of everything. Check it out, but be prepared to spend more then you would at another store. During Halloween, they typically have rows of costumes available and even a surprising amount of accessories. Don't wait too long though because it gets picked over fairly quickly. This Goodwill, despite its size, is the crappiest I've visited. The prices are--for a thrift store--exorbitant. $5 t-shirts? $15 pants? I might as well go to an Old Navy for those numbers. If I'm going to spend an hour sorting through smelly, completely unorganized racks, I want to find a really cheap gem, darn it, and that isn't happening here. I went recently to look at the Halloween costumes and it was madness. Everything was in disarray and the cheap packaged costumes (classics like "Slutty Indian Princess" and "Slutty Nurse") started at around $30. When I asked an employee if they had a particular costume, she merely shrugged and said, "I don't know. You have to look." I'm still a fan of Goodwill, just not this sub-par location. read more

Not the friendliest worker crowd. I like this Goodwill for it's selection of clothes but this is the only Goodwill I have been to where the prices are this ridiculous. They sell Wal-mart shirts that were originally $3 for $.499 and up. (They do carry a lot of used Wal-mart and Target shirts/clothes/items.) This Goodwill also never does specials. Jeans are about $7, any dress (even cheap summer dresses are all either 8 or $9. Pretty pricey for stuff they get for free. Shoes are pretty expensive here too. I like this Goodwill, but I feel like they really take advantage of their situation by over pricing free stuff. Not my cup of tea. I know other Goodwills don't have as high prices. I think since it is close to UT there are always students going here. It's busy a lot of times and there is usually a line for the waiting rooms. The last time I visited here the cost of 7 pieces of clothes was over $100. That one of the dresses was somehow marked for $29.99. If you want to return something, you bring it to the store and for me they held my bag up front, then you have to go get other clothes you find in the store that match the same dollar amount of what you are returning then go through the purchasing process again. It's more of an exchange type process. If you are looking for cheap cheap clothes I wouldn't go here, but if you just want to get reused clothes, it's a good place to go. read more

Even after working here (8 hours straightening up women's clothes will color your opinion of a place), I still love this store. The location is great: right up N. Lamar, next to a gigantic Half Price Books -- I can spend three hours and less than $20 between the two stores, and find some great deals. I also find that they have a great selection -- four large shelves of books; everything from kids' to cooking to fiction to nonfiction and, yes, some romance novels. There are also records, some electronics, and assorted housing items. The clothes selection is gigantic, and now that the stores are using unit pricing (all blouses are set at one price, likewise all jeans, etc.) I can't really complain about the prices. $6 for a nice pair of women's jeans and $5 - $7 for a nice blouse or knit top is excellent, in my book. Frankly, I don't understand reviews that complain about Goodwill's prices; I get the feeling these people aren't looking hard enough. The last time I shopped here, I spent less than $8 and brought home a large decorated glass pitcher, a new-condition scrapbook (that alone would have cost me $10 elsewhere; I looked), an awesome scented candle, and two glass pub mugs. Finally, don't forget to stop by the "bid case" -- you can leave a bid on the items inside, and take them home at the end of the week if you won. Plus, on Saturdays there's a live auction where you can come in and make a last-minute bid -- I've seen fine china auctioned off for incredibly cheap, collectibles, comic books, and other really nice items go for a great price. This is my favorite Goodwill in town if only for the ridiculous selection. I easily live off the donated clothing here alone, but I've found Emile Henry tart pans, tons of Pyrex, furniture, shoes, Guess purses, and many other pieces that have basically made my apartment and wardrobe livable over the years. The clothing that I've found here looks like it's been worn 1-2 times and then discarded- works for me. This store, granted, is ridiculously prices for a thrift store. I don't think that $12 for a jacket is reasonable and I would be elated to see discount days at this store - it would be madness. Now here's where the star is taken off: I don't donate to this Goodwill any more. I've donated and then been seriously admonished at for not donating money at the back door (I had no cash and did not want the guy to take my debit card out of my sight), I've brought boxes of resellable stuff (hell, I shop here - I know what sells) and been momentarily accused of trying to unload junk before they looked at the contents, and I really don't feel like donating resellable items if I'm going to be treated like I'm doing them a disservice. My donations go to Savers or Top Drawer now as a result and they take everything with a smile (probably because they can resell everything I bring, thanks very much.) read more

If you're going here and judging this place based on customer service and lack of premium selection than you obviously forgot where you where. The people working here are making minimum wage, have no education, and these are donated items that raise money for the less fortunate... or some Mr. Big (Halftime Show reference). With that aside, this place is great for costume parties with outlandish themes. You can usually find a centerpiece to an outfit and build off it. White Trash party? Thats nothing a good Dixie Chicken t-shirt and some jorts cant fix. Stop light party? They got everything organized by colors. Need something that says classy but know you're going to get dirty from head to toe? They got crap like that too. Everything is reasonably priced for if your purpose is to wear it for the night and then burn it. They also have electronics and art but if you're buying stuff like that at goodwill just save your money for something more important like malt liquor. read more

However, I would ALWAYS pick Savers over this place (or even the other Goodwill up on Research) due to one simple fact: they don't sort the clothes by size. Seriously? I had to look through EVERY RACK of jeans and only ended up with one pair. Same with the sweaters and dresses and the like. Also, it's hard to complain about prices when nothing I bought was over 10 bucks, but I'm spoiled by Savers' policy of 20% off if you donate on the way in. I'd come back again, but only if I'd already hit the other stores recently (you know you thrift shop too often if you recognize the clothes from last time). read more

As far as clothing goes, this Goodwill is top notch. Their clothing selection is HUGE and very well organized. I've found many an awesome find here. As with the other Goodwills in the Austin area, it's a bit pricy ($9 for dresses...?). However, as great as their clothing selection is, their housewares selection is terrible. it's not that they don't have anything, but there's little to no organization. Compared to some other Goodwills in the area, it's really lacking. I don't mind digging usually, but this place gives me a headache. read more

COVID PRECAUTIONS ARE LAX. love this place usually but there were many times the staff stood less than 6 ft from me for extended periods and no apparent reason. also several staff wearing masks in loose ways, aka below nose etc. no one is counting how many ppl come in and the hand disinfectant is difficult to find and was running out. makes me worried other precautions are also being ignored. read more

For clothes, this location is great. For furniture, not so much. But given that stock changes in a blink of an eye - maybe I just went on a day when they were a bit barren. I was not in need of clothes, so it was a quick stop in and out. I also found the prices to be a bit high, which is probably because it is in a nicer neighborhood. I actually prefer the Salvation Army and do better in those stores (at least I did in Chicago - we'll see how it goes here in Austin). In truth, I only wound up in this store because it was a Sunday and Salvy is closed! I did like the donation offer with the discount coupon to use next time - so I saved 10% on my next visit at another location. I did find some lovely, unique green dishes and a few bowls by Furio and another name I can't remember and am too lazy to go and find out. Just moved to Austin, so this was my first visit with my sister who was visiting. There is a cool restaurant called Dan's Hamburgers across the street, but it was windy and we had heavy bags (we were cabbin' it) - so we opted for the KFC in the same parking lot. read more

There's an immediate smell of , maybe sweat, as you walk in.. It's a little overwhelming at first , but you can get used to it :/ ( that's where the two star deduction comes in ) It's nice to say that's probably the only negative of this place. The clothes section is decent . Everything is pretty organized, although I did find some items out of place. The dressing room was clean enough... This place is very over priced. Many items are from Dollar Tree and they are asking over $1.

Just because this location is big doesn't mean it contains anything worthwhile. The furniture was really beat up and over-priced. The housewares were in total disarray. And honestly, the whole store smelled bad. I was in a pinch, having just moved and really needed some basic kitchen utensils, but between the dank musty smell in there and free-for-all silverware tub, I couldn't justify taking time to actually find a set that matched and was in decent condition. I just grabbed some pieces on top that looked ok, although not super clean, and bailed. This place needs a deep cleaning and perhaps they should be a bit more choosey in which donations they turn out as merchandise. I will say that the lady who rang me up was very nice. But Austin has a wealth of small local thrift shops with better selection, prices, and atmosphere. You're better off hitting up one of them. read more
