I reached out to owner Kelley Rytlewski in advance as a courtesy, when we could have simply walked. Her response was to tell us not to come to her store. Her reason was that she didn't want us taking up space for "real" customers. No explanation beyond that, no alternative offered, even after I responded to her question about whether or not the Girl Scouts would be spending money at her store. (Yes, she actually asked me that. My response was that they were all instructed to bring $30 but it was up to them to choose to spend it at her store or not.) As someone who reached out in good faith, I found the interaction dismissive and unwelcoming. The customer experience was a stark contrast to the warm, community-focused image the business owner projects. If you're a school group, troop, or youth organization looking for a welcoming community partner and experience in Austin, I'd look elsewhere. Imagine being a female owner of a community-focused business and NOT partnering with Girl Scouts. Mind blown. Note: My previous THREE reviews of my experience with this business have been removed by the owner.

Beyond clothing, I've found beautiful crystal and china, quality glassware and serving pieces, decorative items, books in wonderful condition, puzzles, children's toys and clothing, and some truly gorgeous furniture. The furniture, in particular, is often top-quality and priced far below what I would expect. The store itself is clean, organized, and easy to shop. I never feel like I have to dig through piles of damaged or worn-out items to find something worthwhile. What really sets Better ATX apart, though, is the people. The volunteers are friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they're doing. Every visit feels welcoming. I often run into familiar faces, and it's not unusual to end up having a pleasant conversation with a volunteer I've never met before. As someone who relies on thrift stores to help stretch my budget for clothing and household items, I appreciate places that offer genuine value. This is a really cool place filled with things you won't find just anywhere. If you're looking for unique vintage, antique, mid-century modern, or just plain unusual pieces, you'll probably have a great time browsing. Just don't go expecting thrift store prices. Everything is priced much closer to full market value, so this is more of a vintage boutique than a thrift store. I originally stopped in because I'd seen photos online of some beautiful vintage glassware and hoped to find something to add to my collection. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything I was looking for, and what did catch my eye was more than I was willing to spend.
