This review is long overdue. I hired this company after I found them in a local magazine and I gave them a call to request an estimate for a complete remodel on my 1970s house. They came in and gave me a fair estimate and help me with the designprocess and permit process. They started construction a few weeks later. Like the last few legitimate reviews, we were so emotionally scarred from our experience with Goodfellas that it has taken a few months to even be able to type this up. Simply put, they are liars and scammers. Please please please please take this review and others seriously and save yourself the headache. Let our pain be your relief. Four months in to a five week project, a Goodfellas employee said "well, I would fire us if I were you." Their hope was to get fired rather than finish the nightmare they started. We had a simple bathroom remodel, which is not without hiccups in an old house (redo drywall, reroute pipes, no square corners etc.). It is the only bathroom in the house so we could not live there until it was finished. We were hopeful to move in in July, we ended up moving in November. We were lied to every step of the way. They had not pulled permits when they started, my boyfriend confronted them after calling the city, and then they applied for the permits. If only we had the forethought to cut and run there. Demolition was quick, but once the construction started, they would staff the project with 1-2 guys for 1-2 days a week. It easily could have clipped along with 3 guys working 5 days a week, but also could have been completed with 2 guys working that often. We simply never had crews that showed up more than twice a week, at odd hours. It was infuriating, that after 4 months of delay, they simply refused to commit the manpower to finish the job (even after multiple promises from multiple people to do so). Subcontractors on more than one occasion complained they weren't getting paid and had to take other jobs. They changed construction crews midway and never had anyone capable to doing the tiling they said they could do. But since they wouldn't admit to it, they just destroyed tile after hand made tile, until we literally had to use pieces to finish the project. I'm not exaggerating, once tiling started, the project languished for 9 weeks. When we finally fired them and hired competent contractors, the tiling was done in 3 and a half days. The rest of the project was finished the next week. It wasn't hard work, they just refused to do it. Along with all of the other headaches, they simply did not do certain things to code, and the contractors that we had to hire to replace them had to redo almost everything related to plumbing. They literally didn't install any necessary elements of the shower or connect them properly, so it never would have worked if we hadn't ripped the tile out and started over. Getting a hold of anyone is a joke. The "owner" said she would take personal responsibility to get it completed but (1) would not put any promises in writing (2) would not give us a way to contact her directly or (3) did not actually fulfill any of the promises she gave out on the phone. I'm a construction lawyer and my family runs a construction company in a different state. We had reasonable expectations and know that construction is always tricky. But this was such a miserable experience it made me rethink my own profession. read more

We hired Goodfellas Construction back in late 2017. Till today (Oct 2019), we still do not have our permits to start building our beautiful home. Throughout the process of working with them there has been lies, finger pointing, excuses, mismanagement, incomplete work (and finding excuses why), and ignorance. Goodfella is actually the "Badfellas" and will drag you out by lying and bring out excuses and eventually quit on you. Your going to lose your money as they will never get done as agreed on the contract and tell you. In the end, when you call, email., etc.. you will never hear from them. This is a review specifically for Shelly, Oscar & Paula from GoodFellas. My husband and I purchased a new home in San Mateo in November of 2017. We're first time homeowners, which means we basically know nothing about this process. On top of that, I am pregnant. And I know no contractor wants to work with a hormonal, uncomfortable, emotional pregnant lady, and would run the other way if they had a far enough heads up. We talked to a handful of contractors, and Goodfellas initially was one of the fastest and most responsive in setting up a meeting for an initial quote. This kind of speed and service is critical when you are swimming in a sea of choices. Getting back to a potential client fast and in a trustworthy way is one of the most powerful way to win clients, quickly. I learned that in the construction and remodeling business, it's just common that noone ever calls you back. Even if you are begging them to take your money. Goodfellas sent Shelly, who checked out our house, was very upfront and transparent about what she would do, and for a quote that was very reasonable for what we were doing (not too high, not too low). In hindsight, for the quality of work, attention to detail, tenacious commitment to treating you like a human, and realizing they are building you a forever home, and not just a "house"... it was a steal!!! The scope of work included removing a load bearing wall to open up our kitchen into the living for an open concept layout, all new cabinets/appliances, kitchen nook, new hardwood flooring through the whole house, new sunroom windows and french doors, laundry room, 2.5 bathrooms, partial exterior siding, and new paint and a bunch of stuff I probably left out that the team had to deal with. So basically, everything. We signed all the contracts around Thanksgiving, and the beginning of the project started out sluggishly over the holidays as we waited impatiently for the architect & structural engineer to send approved plans. To be fair, it was the holidays and apparently, people don't work over them which caused a slight delay in the timeline. Once we got all the plans approved, the real work started around Mid-January with Shelly and her team, and once they got started they were on fire. The whole job took about 3.5 months. We anticipated the permit process to be super laborious and annoying but we passed with flying colors every time, mainly bc of Shelly being a permit ninja in San Mateo. This is a huge Godsend when you are doing remodeling. If you are considering GoodFellas, ask specifically for Shelly and her foreman Oscar. They are the dynamic duo and in the world of remodeling when all you hear are horror stories. These are the things they did that particularly stood out to me: --I felt like a human, a friend, and a family member to Shelly. She cared about our house like a family member would care about if if they were building it for you. This was how she took care of the big things (like making sure a giant load bearing beam is safe and wouldn't fall on our heads, to quickly taking care of the last final details like a loose toilet paper holder upon moving in). Generally, when dealing with mistakes (which are bound to happen) or subcontractors, I felt she was on our side and vouched for us. She gave us a bottle of wine to celebrate my husband's new job, a bottle of sparkling juice for me to celebrate our move in, and even a gift certificate for my husband's birthday. What contractor does that?!? --When people say that contractors suck because they quote you a price, then open up walls and say you have all this other stuff you need to fix, that never happened with us. She quoted us a price and stayed with that price. Sometimes stuff she did on our house ended up costing more than we anticipated, but the original quote never changed. An example was that our flooring was a pain in the A** to rip out, but the price for hardwood floor update never changed --The timeline. All the work was done pretty speedily once we had plans in place. --The detail, and quality of work is outstanding. Oscar, Shelly's foreman would text us before he laid any tile, or installed any hardware to make sure it was right. This meant we didn't have any major mistakes, and we all stayed in constant communication. Oscar is capable, nice and it was great to see his smile every time we were in the house. --Paula helps to manage Shelly's projects and she is a rockstar. She will chase you down even to a Korean BBQ restaurant to pick up a check so you don't have to find a stamp and mail it :) We have now been moved in for about 3 weeks. Not only does it look beautiful, it functions well, complete with a hot shower, working drawers, etc. If it wasn't 110% perfect, Shelly sent someone to fix it right away. This company is a crook. It screwed up many customers by forming a new business license but somehow managed to keep the Goodfellas name. There are several similar reviews in yelp in the last few months about this. Do not use this shady company. In my case, I signed contract with this company in May 2017. The contract stated 7 year warranty. It's a big repair job and cost more than $100K. It took much longer than originally planned. The project manager brought in different crews and subcontractors. I have to spend lot of time to push them to complete the job as quickly as possible. A few months ago, I asked the project manager to fix some remaining issues as part of 7 years warranty. He told me that he was fired without proper compensation for this project from the company and asked me to contact the manager (Maya) directly. So I called many times in the last two months and left messages many times. Out of many calls, I was able to get hold of Maya once. She told me that the company was sold and got a new license number and that she will look into my case and get back to me. But since then, she did not pick up my calls or return my calls. When we first hired these people, we researched quite a bit and found this company prided themselves on customer services which is a crucial component in any construction/remodeling project. I will be honest, when we were first assigned to a project manager, we did not jive at all. The guy did not embody the values the company portrays. After a phone call to management, they quickly without delay changed project managers and we got the opportunity to work with Aviv. Aviv took care of us and made sure we were happy with every stage of the project. I call him incessantly, even at 11 pm on Saturdays. He and his contractor Moises would respond right away. Here is a breakdown of the projects I have them do. Bathroom 1: Because I have a rare toilet that is original to the house, they let me keep it and work around it, so the city would consider it "grandfathered in." This was a huge deal, as this toilet is my husband's favorite fixture in the house. Tidiness: I would give them a 4/5. Quality: I used tiles that were quite tedious and the laborer Walter did a great job making it work with two different grout colors. Bathroom 2: This one was pretty difficult as we discovered dry rot, thus the project took longer. However, Aviv and Moises did a fantastic job educating me the importance of removing dry rot and double checking if the dry rot spread to other parts of the house. Tidiness: 3.5/5 It is hard to keep tidy when you have excess dry rot in the bathroom Quality: Superb quality, I purchased again difficult tiles to install because of its wave-like pattern. Walter made sure each tile continued with the next so that the wall looked like one cohesive piece which was not easy! Also, our vanity did not fit our vanity top sink. Moises and Aviv went the extra mile and fabricated the entire vanity to make sure both items fit. Overall, I was impressed by their commitment to make sure we are happy and to do whatever needs to be done to get the project done. If you have to ask, yes, I would re-hire them and work with Moises and Aviv again! read more

We chose them simply for two reasons: 1.) they were honest - clarified costs upfront and gave tips on where to spend our money (other contractors tried to sell me things I didn't need!) 2.) they were professional - knew exactly what they were doing and the timeline, which was an important factor for me but also communicated clearly vs. other shady contractors Our kitchen remodeling included tearing down a wall between the living room and kitchen to open up the rooms, upgrading electrical/plumbing, and a complete revamp on the look & feel of the kitchen/living room (our house was designed in the 70s). We worked with one of their designers (Jenny) to design the most optimal layout for our house. We had a very hard time envisioning what it should look like w/o the walls but she was great to work with as she was patient enough to send multiple designs/options that helped us realize our dream kitchen. We met a few times to confirm the layout + cabinet style and she constantly brought samples to help us reach a final decision before we ordered everything. I don't know how other companies are like but I know for sure you won't be disappointed working with her. We completed our renovation w/ them within 2 months. Oscar & his dad were the main construction leads. They were extremely professional, always on-time, super detailed in their work and craftsmanship, but most importantly they were CLEAN. We had some minor hiccups on our project but overall the communication was smooth, transparent, and Shelly & David worked EXTREMELY hard throughout the busy holidays to make sure we were happy... ...and we were! I wish I had put this review up on Yelp when all this happened, but I only put it up on Angie's List. I worked with the Bay Area portion of the company in 2013. It's been more than 8 years and I am still mad about this experience, so you know it was bad. It was an awful experience all around for me and I can see from the reviews that they continue to have a similar issues on some jobs in NorCal to this day. I should have sued them because between the $6,000 deposit and all of the damage they did to my property... I was out at least $8,000. The contractor Ron also promised to return $3,000 to me, but that never happened. They were hired for a bathroom remodel and to work on a couple of walls. One wall they were supposed to smooth out, instead of skimming it, they put mud over the top of the texture, which made it overlap with the baseboard. This was the least bad thing they did. They were supposed to even out a wall so wood paneling could be put over the bottom portion. They put drywall over the bottom part of the wall, poorly mind you, which was completely unnecessary as they just needed to put shims on so the wood paneling would go on correctly. Doing the drywall he also put holes in four and broke one of the original old growth fir tree boards from the original paneling. Boards of that quality and age are quite expensive as they were 5'-6' long. The contractor I hired to fix their mistakes had to tear out everything they did and completely redo it. The bathroom is where the hot mess came in. They came and demoed the bathroom, which was the only one in the house. That would have been okay if they actually kept coming to work. They dumped all the debris in the basement and never had it hauled away, which was in the contract for them to do, so I had to pay about $700 to have it all hauled away. They also dragged the cast iron tub on its front and wrecked the finish. They did get a permit, but my good contractor had to get it corrected later because they had the toilet and sink in the wrong places. They disappeared for about a month and returned to put a barrier on the floor for the tile to be laid. They were supposed to remove the floor of the bathroom because it was rotten and very obviously so. They were planning to just install the tile over the top of it. On New Year's Eve, their subcontractor shows up with two random guys that I am pretty sure were not licensed. He had them cut out my bathroom floor and they had no idea what they were doing. In doing this, they managed to cut through every floor joist 1/4" to 1" in at least two spots per joist. This compromised the floor's strength. My good contractor had to reinforce the floor joists in the bathroom due to the damage it sustained. They were also supposed to try to save the original fir floor to patch the other floor in the house. They wrecked it all, so we could not reuse it. I fired them and they took the materials they had already brought into my house to replace my bathroom floor and then stole the shipping crate that my tub came in, not the tub, just the crate. Ron called and threatened me by saying that I would owe them the full amount of the contract (another $12,000) if I did not continue to work with them because I "breached the contract." Yes, *I* breached the contract, not the people doing poor quality work and damaging my property. Thankfully he did not follow through with that threat. I guess Ron was the owner at the time's son and they later fired him. I found a good contractor and I am glad I found someone competent to do the work on my house because I can only imagine how it would have turned out if I continued with this company. I wish they would pay me back the money they owe me, but I am sure that ship has sailed. I just hope my experience, though it was years ago, will serve as a warning to research anyone you are going to hire carefully. read more

We remodeled our kitchen and bathroom, replaced our roof, and upgraded our electrical with Goodfellas. They are fast and were able to complete everything with permits in about 2 months. However, there were some miscommunications. A lesson learned for us is to be detail oriented and periodic check-ins of the job site. Overall I'm very happy with them. If they've made mistakes they'll fix it and keep fixing it until we're satisfied. Notable mention: we are very happy with our project manager, Shelly L. She's very accessible, honest and straightforward. I really enjoyed working with her and I see/talk to her so much - she's like family :). Nathaniel and David are also really great. My family worked with Nathan and remodeled our kitchen in January. The project was very well done and only took 14 days. Two things that stood out for me working with this company, was their timing and the quality of the job done- they were prompt in starting and finishing the job and the result is awesome. Two days after our initial meeting with Nathan they began working on the kitchen and I didn't have to coordinate anything. The crew was responsive and accommodating and respected my home throughout the process. The countertops make a great addition to my kitchen and are without a doubt my favorite of all the renovations done. I will say this much, the price is competitive but you really do get what you pay for with a big company than with a small time contractor. My initial chat with the office staff was friendly and professional and a few days later I met with Ben. Ben was a pleasure to work with: a warm and funny personality backed by a wide knowledge of materials and building how-to--and no pressure to do things a certain way or to spend X amount of money to do it (he suggested several "quick" fixes we could do ourselves as we walked the property). Ben looked over the house, listened to what we were concerned about, then had a thorough chat with us about what our ideal vision was, not just what we needed to fix. We considered expanding the property and having new architectural plans drawn up; the architect Ben connected us with, Sebastian, was also stellar to work with and did the leg work to check with the city to make sure they would even consider our proposed expansion. After a month or so of meetings, measuring, and some back-and-forth with the city, we had a quote. And while we decided not to move forward with the project at this time (due to work uncertainty over the next few months), we hope to revisit the plan in 2017 and will call on Ben again for future projects! read more

2.5 Stars We signed an agreement with Goodfellas to do a kitchen and bath renovation. When we signed in August 2017, we were promised that the kitchen would be done by Thanksgiving 2017 (I was very pregnant at the time, and it was important to me that I picked a contractor who would complete the work before the twin babies arrived). That didn't happen. The bulk of the work was completed by February 2018, about 2.5 months after they had promised to complete the work. If the work had been perfect, we could have accepted the situation of living in a much delayed project, because we've lived through renovations before, and delays happen. However, there have been an unending list of problems with their work. They never blocked off dust in the working area from the rest of the house. While I had assurances from them that they worked cleanly (again, important, because I was pregnant when the contract was signed), they never took the basic step of preventing dust from going through the rest of the house by just putting up plastic sheeting. After I asked them, they finally put up some thin, garbage bag like stuff that easily ripped, and they used masking tape (not painter's tape), which ruined the walls that had been painted a few months back, in rooms that were not part of the construction project. At about 8 months pregnant, I was standing up on chairs, trying to put up plastic sheeting to try and keep the construction dust from getting all over the house. Goodfellas did send over cleaning people after I complained, but dust remained after their cleaning, and after we ourselves cleaned repeatedly, because the dust just went everywhere. After the first time they installed the countertops, we discovered that there was a crack in the kitchen countertop that someone at Goodfellas or their sub had tried to hide by filling with grout. While they offered to replace the slab, they took a chunk out of the existing countertop so that they could color match it with another slab, so for about another month and a half (about a month after the project was "completed,") we had a large missing hunk out of the kitchen countertop. Then after they finally replaced the slab, there are now cracks in the countertop seam between the two slabs, which they again tried to fix by just adding in grout/caulking. When the designer ordered cabinets, there wasn't communication between the crew and her directly, about changes to the floor plan relating to the beam that was added when a wall was taken out. As a result, we had to pay for cabinet and cabinet parts that were never used (and that cannot be returned). After they had initially finished the bathroom, we discovered that the door, when opened, would hit the toilet. If you decide to work with them, you should spend a significant amount of time planning where everything goes to a very detailed degree. While I had talked through a layout of where the toilet would go, they instead had it face a different direction. They initially didn't think there was a problem with the door hitting the toilet, until we insisted that there had to be another solution. We now have a barn door to our bathroom, which is not ideal (the room isn't actually sealed shut when the door is closed), and not something we ever wanted. The problems go on. The grout in the bathroom tile has repeatedly cracked. There were cracks in the kitchen caulking along the wall, and in the tile. The sink in the bathroom post renovation leaked. There was leaking in the kitchen post renovation. There has been condensation in the basement closet under the kitchen (which they insist is normal and not related to their work). In fairness, Goodfellas has tried to be responsive, and the project manager is very nice, and has responded to texts very quickly. Unfortunately, they did not anticipate or resolve all of the problems that came up from their crew working on the ground. Goodfellas has acknowledged to me directly that they screwed up our project badly. Consider working with someone else, unless you are comfortable with sub-par work. read more

My wife bought a new washer and dryer- but I was having difficulty connecting the dryer system through our kitchen into our bathroom. At the same time this was happening we hired Goodfellas to renovate our bathroom and kitchen and it was overall a pleasant experience. We have a simple style beach house, small with hardwood floors and really simple white tilling throughout. Keep this in mind- because Nathan never pushed anything more than we were planning on doing. He acknowledged the layout we wanted and knew that our house wasn't meant for anything extravagant. They replaced the kitchen and bathroom floors (ours had suffered the wear an tear of the previous family and their pets) as well as the countertops. Up until this point we were moderately satisfied with the job and they had met all expectations; but what amazed me was when Nathan heard me say in passing that I was having difficultly connecting the dyer he volunteered to help us. We assumed he was going to add an extra cost, but he did the work with no charge. Nathan and everyone he brought had such a great work ethic. I checked the timestamp, one was sent on the previous Friday, the second on Sunday morning. Odd, yes, unusual, no - not with my cell service provider. It seems that the two delayed voicemails that arrived to me on Monday were confirmation messages for my Sunday appointment - it seems they do recognized that the most important part of the appointment is keeping the appointment, thus I owe GoodFellas Construction an apology. I received a follow-up phone call, it was pleasant and courteous; as a result of that conversation, I have rescheduled my appointment with Eric of GoodFellas Construction. read more

Goodfellas recently finished a complete remodel of our Kitchen. The process started with Shelly our project manager who was amazing!!! She shared our vision for the space and was determined to make that vision come true in a reasonable time frame and budget. Shelly is so knowledgeable and easy to work with. Our family of 5 lived in the home during the project so getting the job done timely was important to us. Shelly with the help of Paula kept everything on track and kept us very well informed on the process and the next step. Our foreman Miguel along with the rest of the crew working in our home were a joy to have around and their skill and attention to detail was phenomenal. We are more than happy with our new kitchen and everyone at Goodfellas really made this whole process a very positive experience. To sum it up...phenomenal work, communication, relationships, and results!!! We could not be happier. read more

This review is just for the estimate meeting. Shelly L. was so professional, polite, and had a nice smile. She went through several different options (which unfortunately includes those permits for every little thing in Concord). She is knowledgeable, really knows her stuff. Shelly is a fine representative for Goodfellas. I should be making my decision about a contractor soon but Goodfellas is definitely up there just because of Shelly. More companies should have someone like Shelly representing them. read more

I came across this company through Yelp and was impressed by the high rating. I contacted them and set up an appointment and spoke with the project manager. This part went pretty well and we made another appointment to meet with the designer and his assistant for measurements and design ideas. Well, the assistant was very late and their measuring device wasn't working, so they ended up using the footprints we already had for the house. The designer showed up over an hour late so we had already discussed the ideas with the project manager and of course they got lost in communication After several rounds of 'no, that's not what we discussed', we finally landed a plan and the structural engineer started the work. I was told we would get three designs ideas, one being our own and two other suggestions by the designer, but that wasn't the case. It also took about a month before they provided us with a quote. By this time, we had already paid for the planning (which by the way costs 12 thousand dollars after a promotion is applied and it does not include the price of the permit itself). Once the structural engineer is done, the entire amount is due before even ensuring that the plans are approved which was the oddest part to me. Overall, I'd say, they got the planning job done, it took longer than we were told (two months just to get to a permit) and even though I knew about the 12k price point going in, I don't think it was worth it and wouldn't recommend them. Oh and their quote for the actual job was exactly twice the price of two other companies I spoke with. read more

It took us one year to recover morally from the experience we had while working with GoodFellas and Shelly, as a project manager. We had the most horrific experience with the bathroom renovation in the summer / autumn 2018. The project was supposed to be completed in 2-3 weeks and it took almost 3 months after changing 3 (!) construction teams. Who would imagine that a simple one bathroom renovation with licensed large construction company of great reviews could end up being a total disaster. It is a very long due review that hopefully will warn potential Bay Area customers, who may be the same as us mistaken by good average reviews online, however, if you pay more attention, most of them come from LA, if they are not fake at all. The first team: The project was run by a foreman that was not licensed, as we later discovered, while broader team would go to our kitchen, take cutlery / drinks and then throw it away after their lunch without our permission and awareness. We just found our expensive forks in the garbage one day. Most importantly, they put our property and life in danger by leaving open active electrical wires together with the old outlet right next to the insulation and closing all of it with new drywalls, which we discovered when the third team arrived to redo the project fully. Second team: was trying to put tiles with cement right on top of the drywall, without right insulation membranes that also help to keep tiles on the walls. They clearly never did tiles before in their lives, as they broke a huge amount of our expensive tiles and installed the rest totally incorrectly (you could not only feel, but clearly see the uneven surface of the walls and huge gaps from the drywall). They also destroyed our deck by cutting tiles without any surface protection, that the company had to fix in the end. We had managed to escalate the situation with huge efforts to the president of the company himself, based in LA, as usual management team in LA was not responsive at all - they went totally silent. The whole project had to start from square zero (actually in minus zero, as they had to break everything that was done before first) - almost two months after the start of the project. Our project manager - Shelly - was extremely incompetent. Every time the team did not know how to execute on certain parts of the project (walk in shower, built in toilet tank, tiles, insulation, etc.) and would do it wrongly, she would insist that it is exactly the right way of doing it in a very assertive way. At some point they even installed the vanity close to the level of my knees (I am 5.3 ft) and shamelessly asked me to come and confirm it works (all because they did not know how to install the plumbing in the right place). Shelly was also very rude in communication, telling us that it is she, not us, the project manager and we should let her do the project the way she wants. Be aware of all promises she can deliver coming across over confident, however being totally incompetent. I had to personally research construction websites and Youtube channels and send it to the management team together with Shelly explaining why their work was done incorrectly, which was only proved by the third team (with Miguel), who had to redo the whole project from scratch and finally did it well. Stay away, if you can! You will save yourself and your family from wasted time, money and stress by not dealing with these people. read more
