I'm actually a big fan of this place. The people there are not the cheeriest of people, but definitely not offensive or rude in any way. A lot of great finds here..found a quality Irish cashmere sweater with minimal wear that normally retails for $500...got it for only $60. There are a lot of quality higher-end shirts like Thomas Browne that run between $50-$70 (these were new or hardly-worn). My only complaint is I wish their shoe prices would come down considerably. $250 for a pair of worn-down outdated Ferragamo/Gucci shoes is pretty ridiculous. Stinky store (as in does not smell good in there) with a few nice pieces buried among tons of ratty old rags (as in dirty and worn garments). The stuff that is worth buying is over priced especially considering the nasty salespeople you have to deal with in order to buy something. Designer Consigner is better. Honestly, I don't think I'd have taken the time to write if the staff hadn't been so strange and rude. I've only been there twice. read more

Let's start off with this: I can't find any other men's consignment shops, so this place is pretty much all I have in that arena. You are going to have to make multiple trips over a course of weeks or months to get the things you want. There is a lot of terrible, horrible inventory that I'm fairly surprised that they take. However, with enough visits, you'll eventually come in after someone in your size and with your taste has just unloaded a bunch of great clothing. These are the visits that make this place worthwhile. The staff tries to be very helpful, although I can find them a bit too helpful at times (I don't like people watching my choices and offering to have me try things on before I'm ready - maybe I'm just weird and picky). Make a few trips and you'll find something great. Loses a star for some of the inventory they have but probably should have refused or marked-down to "throw-away" prices. read more

As a consignor, I was recently aghast to find that one of my items, which I had decided not to pick up, ending up back on the rack. I didn't want it back as I figured it wouldn't sell. Well, sell it did -- without my commission! Now you could argue contracts, but the moral of this story is that Goodbyes is a bit unethical. Holy moly, I never knew consignment could be this good. I'm new to the neighborhood and was lucky enough to have a local friend share this gem with me and show me the ropes of combing through all of the racks in the store. We found some great stuff, and the icing on the cake is that it's actually super affordable compared to full price for these top brands and really recent styles. So good. read more

OMG, I was amazed to find lots of great designer clothes at this store. I've been taking all my desinger stuff to Buffalo Exchange all these years and didn't know about this little gem store. The staff at the mens shop was very helpful and much friendly then the gal at the main women's store. A co-worker turned me on to this place before he moved to NY. Ever since i've been a fan. Now, yes, before I went the first time and I checked the Yelp reviews. Ummm...ok. Scary mean ladies who snatch your stuff and yell at you. Great, all the Marina district charm at low prices. Was hoping for the best. And I was pleasantly surprised. Compared to Chris on Polk St. this place is a lot more low-key but carry much more high quality merchandise, the prices are much more reasonable ( an example for fellow fashionista's, a black leather Jimmy Choo bag for under $400.00!) and between the regular store, the mens and the women's sale section across the street, there are more options (once I stopped in on the sale side and they had fluffy designer towels, scarves, smaller handbags, and a fab paid of YSL's that just needed a quick trip to Anthony's for rejuvenation). And ahem.. as a woman who sometimes fits the skinnier jeans, most times not, they also carry designer and regular plus size clothes! I've scored 10.00 jeans, $40.00 boots, on and on. And the woman at the store... well I can say with all honesty I have never evah had a problem with them at all. And I can sense bitch a mile away. Actually my first couple of times I was looking for it. Most times they have everyone check their bags, although this past trip they did not. But I can understand why they do (hello, they resell a lot of DESIGNER clothes..people DO STEAL...and if your not there to do the same then what the hell is the big deal with checking your bag in crybaby?) and it's not like it's off in some cold unmanned corner where someone will steal your pocketbook. Finally went here after years of hearing about it....mostly the men's clothes. I started at the bargain side and quickly found about 10 things to try on. The woman was plenty nice to me (and I wasn't dressed great - jeans and a hooded sweatshirt) - just kind of busy pricing clothes. And nobody tried to check my purse at the door. I bought a couple of things, had them put into my eco-bag and the checker-outter lady said she had the same bag and had found it in London. All in all not a bad experience, and loved the prices. Then I went across the street (dumped the bag in the trunk - always gotta have free hands when rummaging through second-hand) and entered at about 5:30. Again - no purse check. Now I was feeling rushed - not because of them - but because there was so much I wanted to try. However, the prices were definitely not what I wanted to pay. Not exhorbitant - but not what I was willing to pay that particular day. Still - tried on a few things.....older woman in the back working on the shoes - no one rushed me - I ended up being the last in the store because I was finishing up in the dressing room. Lady yells up to the front - hey we have someone in the dressing room back here - me: oh I'm sorry I'm about to be done - her: no - don't worry - I'm not saying that to you - I just want them to know not to lock you in. I go to the counter with my purchase, again pull out an eco-bag, again - complement, complement (seriously people - I've had these things for over 2 years which means they've been around for at least 4 - I can't be the first ones you've seen? but okay I'll take the strokes). Anyway - can't say I'm surprised at the service comments previously - but I had no problems whatsoever. read more

The reason this cluster of stores (one women's, one women's sale, and one men's) in the Presidio Heights District makes my list is because they have lots and lots of labels. LOTS. And, their sale store has some amazing bargains (suede short jacket for $37.50). The best deals are in the sale store (you enter through the men's store and go to the left). Some of the clothes are a little old-lady Pacific Heights, but there are many items worth finding. read more

I love Good Buys (for men) . They only have something I like in my size every 3rd or 4th visit, but when they do its usually a good deal. I would own far fewer Armani, Farhi and HSM suits if it were not for this store. read more

I have been going here since I moved to Laurel Heights two years ago.This review is for the men's shop only. A couple things to keep in mind 1) This place is good for buyers, bad for sellers. I have been both. As a consigner they pay you next to nothing and are fairly disorganized, 2) I have spend at least $1000 in the mens shop over several years and gotten many solid "deals" . You have to dig. It's hit or miss but 50% of the times I stop in, I find myself buying 2-3 designer brand items that are in great shape at half (or better) of the retail price. 3) For the most part their is NO customer service and they leave you alone until it is time to check out. This is fine by me and preferential to the usual retail experience of being hounded and followed around by a salesperson offering unsolicited insights. The people that work in the store are not especially customer service oriented and some of them are downright inhospitable. They seem like a bunch of crazy housewives making minimum wage, I was there today, and bought several things. While trying on clothes upstairs I could hear the saleswomen downstairs complaining about other customers that has just left the shop. Totally unprofessional. 4) If you arrive within half an hour of their closing time you will be treated like an unwelcome intruder. Don't even try stopping by on your way home from work. 5) There is a lot of junk. There are a few hidden gems amongst the junk so come prepared to spend an hour digging and trying things on. Know your style, and know your size. 6) All that being said, I have not found another consignment shop in San Francisco that had as many designer items at such competitive prices. I'm a die-hard Goodbyes girl, but who wouldn't like a store that sells designer clothes at a very reduced price? I also like that I can go in there a lot (i.e., weekly) and see different things: Nothing's ever hanging around, getting stale on the rack, for too long. However, be prepared to rummage and to be bummed when the one-offs aren't your size. It has happened to me and it hurts, but if you keep looking, you're bound to find a nice treasure of some sort. Highlight: the designer shoes! Another bonus is that you can put things on hold, which is a lovely service for those of us who are indecisive, wink wink. I'm a fan! read more

Goodbyes has dropped their policy of requiring that purses be checked. Though their employees continue to be unfriendly (in general), they do have wonderful merchandise. Their garments are not the cheapest out there, but they are high quality, in good condition, & stylish. read more

In my opinion, there are two kinds of successful consignment stores, the boutique kind that are small, well curated and higher price, and the others that are larger, unorganized, that take nearly anything, but are well priced so things move fast. Goodbyes had the look and feel of the later, with the prices of the former. I didn't know there were two stores so seeing a big SALE sign, I walked into the men's side where they have women's on sale. Okay, cast off clothes are one thing, but cast off's on sale. YIKES! There were hundreds of sad, worn out garments, not for $5-$10 but for $40 - $60!!! Are you kidding me??? The vibe of the place was dark and almost dingy. There was faint smell of Chinese food coming from somewhere. There was a commotion upstairs where apparently they have an office. I spent about 5 minutes and turned to leave. On my way out the sales girl complemented my purse, and though I thought it was a weird thing to do, I was nice and participated in a little small talk. She told me there were lots of great handbags across the street at the other store... oh, another store. I assumed it was going to be the nice boutique I had hoped for. I was wrong. The place was big, over crowded with merch, and way too expensive. The store had about 10 women and one very weird looking guy pawing through the racks. I started off straight ahead where nobody was and found lots and lots of overpriced sweaters. One was totally pilled, another was stained. This was thrift store quality stuff with price tags of $60 - $80, my heart was sinking. I found the evening wear, some cute things, but the prices were high for what they were. I took down one dress and before I knew it, a girl was taking it out of my hands saying she would hold it for me. Okay, whatever. I turned down an isle that looked promising, it was labeled "Designer" and it was long. The rack did have lots of designer labels, but they were priced really high for what they were. It seemed there was no rhyme or reason to the pricing. It was designer, so it was expensive, even if it's totally out of style, ugly, or worn out. There was a fat section of St John knits... does anyone wear those anymore?? There were a few Chanel cashmere sweaters, but really ugly ones. There was a section of really expensive things, a few really cute coats, but the prices were insane. I know some of the jackets were cheaper when they were on the sale rack at Saks 5 years ago. I really think the pricers are high on something or perhaps its just random pricing, like pin the tale on the donkey. I was getting really tired of being there so I went to try on the one dress that seemed okay. The girl who took the dress was nowhere to be seen, so I went to the rack where I saw my dress tied with a men's tie. As soon as I reached for it a girl flew up behind me saying something I really could not understand. She pushed me aside and handed me the dress, as I turned to go into the room she yelled I needed a number, and she handed me a number. Whew, I was one step closer to leaving this level of hell. The dressing room also is where they keep their huge shoe collection. Here they had the same problem, the "designer" shoes were way overpriced for worn shoes, and the non-designer shoes were also overpriced for used shoes. I tried on the dress behind an Ikea curtain, the dressing room was FREEZING COLD!! The dress was okay, but not great. It was $89, a bargain compared to the other ones I was looking at, but by then I was so done with the Goodbyes experience I got dressed, gave back the dress and the number, and headed for the door. On my way out I noticed some Hermes scarves in the case. I love Hermes scarves so I asked to see a few. The girl behind the counter scowled at me and told me they are expensive, like she didn't want to bother showing them to me if I wasn't going to buy them. At that, I was done. this is a great place to find gently used designer items for a very reasonable price. the ties, dress shoes, suits & jackets are on the 1st floor. the pants, shirts, casual wear & other misc items are on the 2nd floor. the layout of the store is pretty friendly as everything is organized very well. the suit & jacket selection are pretty vast & offer many varieties & options. the suits & jackets are generally organized by size so there is no waste of time sifting through the racks trying to find the right size. the prices are pretty reasonable on most items. the shirts & pants however are not sorted by size, they are all together so best to spend your time looking. the tie selection here is pretty good, many of good buys to be had & high quality items. the sock selection is pretty good, as well, many new high end designer socks at bargain prices in comparison to buying at the retail store. i always leave this store with something in my hands, either a tie, shirt, jacket or suit. there are some amazing finds to be had if you are willing to spend the time looking. the prices are very reasonable for what you are getting. a word of advice, is to take your time & check over your items carefully, as there is no returns or exchanges. periodically, i have found wonderful & amazing things here but after looking at them carefully, i noticed either small flaws or some reweaving ( suits & jackets ). parking around this area is hit or miss. there is typically more parking on california street which is a block away. read more

I couldn't find the yelp for the men's side only woman's, which tells me It's female driven already so I'm leaving my review here. I wanted to shop. I'm not a fan of SF shopping, LA is better, but for more reasons than the obvious. A lot of the second hand stores in SF are very unwelcoming. I grew up in the bay so I know there are friendly people, but for some reason when it comes to art and fashion, even second hand, it seems that San Francisco is the snootiest. I was with friends and we went down the streets looking for something to do. I had already been shopping that day. I felt I needed more. We first go into the woman's store, I was confused because I didn't know it was only woman's, I've never been there before. I said this aloud and some rude looking girl putting clothes on a rack disgustedly pointed across the street and said, men's is there. She got up and joined another woman, who looked old. I was like, okay. The vibe was not good. They stared at us like thieves, maybe people have stolen from there before, idk. I didn't feel welcomed. Maybe cause I'm a boy. From what I could see the clothed sucked. The shoes looked in quality to goodwills. It was a little crowded. The window displays seemed like false advertisement. Inside was dirty, the floors were dusty and the clothes smelled, sort of like moth balls. All in all I'm not sure why woman shop there. I didn't see anything remotely good. My friend did get a dress, I wish she didn't. It seemed to be marked high for something dated and a little worn out. Almost $40! The sales girl flipped her personality the second she brought the item to the register. Like they are only happy when you buy from them. I know shops like that. A friend of mine has one like it. They are picky in what they want and when they finally choose they only pay 30% of what it's worth and hand it up with a price tag 70% what it's worth to make money. Whoever owns the stores thinks they are really smart in doing this. Sad to say it seems like a popular spot though. Some Northern Californian woman don't know better. In LA the second hand stores are always willing o give a deal. They don't have this 'No returns, No exchanges' crap. Also the clothes don't smell funny and actually look like they belong in this decade. Bargain buying, even designer, should be just that, bargain. I was so turned off by the experience I actually warned people visiting SF about it. Upon reading the reviews my suspicions were right. They are snobby pretentious and low - ballers. I didn't see any reviews for men's stuff. I wish visited it, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth so now ill never know. Good luck Goodbyes. read more

This is the menswear section of Good Byes, connected to the markdown Good Byes next door (3462 Sacramento). The downstairs is the nicer, haberdasher stuff--buttondown shirts, cashmere sweaters, ties, jackets, etc. Upstairs is sportswear, Cosby sweaters, Hawaiian shirts, and weird costumey stuff like a pony-skin-and-dungaree western shirt or a 90s hip hop-esque buttondown with black leather collar and pocket. Sometimes, it's more fun to look through the duds (both meanings, for sure) and wonder what kind of people owned them. Bring your fashion-challenged boy to shop downstairs, and use the upstairs mainly as aversion therapy. read more

I had been selling my high end ,relatively new , unused (now retired) for the last 3 years through Afterwards in Menlo Park. 6 months ago I switched to Goodbyes for the higher % payment and they automatically send you a check each month instead of having to call and leave messages. Yes, as good as it gets for reasonably priced brand name used clothing. All is in very good condition. On each trip we buy women's and men's clothing. Get on their email list for special clearance sales. Great selection of men's coats and sweaters. The designer jackets are worth seeing if not buying. Sales are a wonderful value as prices keep sliding before stuff is returned to owners or given to charity. If there are racks outside, pay close attention. Women's clothing often starts out across the street at the pricier outlet and slides across to this store if not sold in a few weeks. Lots of new stuff too from T Bahama and others. read more

As a seller, I had a good experience here for the most part. A pair shoes of mine were cosigned. Not sure if I am speaking the cosigner lingo, here, so bare with me. A few months later they were sold. They almost sold them for a lower price then I thought that they were worth, but I complained, and they were marked up without giving me grief. For the men's store, not all of the items are always fabulous, but they're almost always in way better shape than other used items in other consignment shops. They're prices are also much more reasonable than the others as well. It's not uncommon to happen upon an Hermes shirt for eighty bucks here. This place really is the best consignment in the city. I am a BIG FAN of Goodbyes, its friendly staff and of course all of its amazing inventory of high end clothing, accessories, shoes and handbags. I live in the neighborhood and have been a customer and consigner of Goodbyes for over 15 years. I've brought in my designer clothes, shoes and handbags - the experience from drop off to receiving my portion of the consignment was seamless. They are honest about what that can accept and in fairness to them, they have a excellent eye on what their customers want and an acceptable condition. The customer service has been excellent and they have treated me like family from day one. I'm always greeted with a smile when I walk in at both women's stores. I respect their honesty too when I'm trying something on and ask for their opinion - Sol and Arlene have such great taste! It's a gem of place. You'll have a great time browsing and I bet you'll even find a few items to buy - that's it starts for fans of Goodbyes! Yes, there are other consignment shops in SF, but this one is hands down the Original Best in reasonably priced designer goods. Some of my favorite finds have been my classic Chanel blazer, handbag and ballet flats - all at a significantly less than the retail price for one of these items. Unreal for the boys! So-so for us girls. What's with their men's wear?! I regularly see brand new Prada items that are part of a new, yet to be released collection! And shirts for ~$160! What?! Amazing. My man found his best suit here, a stunning Zenga soft cashmere/wool prince of whale pattern, fit him like it was tailored. Since it was in a sidewalk sale, it was marked down to, gulp, $15. FIFTEEN DOLLARS?! ARE YOU PEOPLE CRAZY? It had a small burn in the shoulder, but a weaver wove in a repair and $40 later it looked like the new $5k suit that it is. Impossible to beat, still his favorite suit years later, despite having an impressive closet. My favorite hunting ground... Mainly to giggle as my man turns into a closthes horse :) HIlarious. But lackign in fukiness and vision on the women's side. Just racks of clothes, ranging from little old lady stuff, an occasionally unwearabe haut couture deal, jeans, and sweaters. Nothing brilliant, ilke the absurdly cheap Kiton men's shirts! ARRRGH! I'm gonna weary mens threads from now now on! Power! Miao But usually he drags ME to Good Buys. I just don't have much luck over in women's. The slection is good in some areas, but I'm an irregularly thin size, which makes it tough to find things in places like this. What can I say the ladies, well thank-you for starters....I have had the pleasure of cosigning with you for the past 6 months maybe a little more. They were very good at taking the time to veiw 100's of items I have brought to them and the owner herself on more than one occassion took the time to discuss my items even advising me not to cosign some items instead to sell them online where I would easily make more. I have been dealing with other cosignment shops that act as if I'm a pain for being promt in providing quality items and professionalism in calling in advance ect. I cant tell you how good it feels that these people are so warm and yes at first I was odd being a guy with lots of jewelry...but have come to really appreciate all that I have learned from their knowledge and professionalism. I do look forward to working with them in the future. Oh yeah I almost forgot I made a pretty good amount of money 2-3 times what other shops in the bay area had to offer.
