I have shopped at GOODBYES for many years -- find the quality high and the help friendly, pro-active, warm and often very charming. The staff are hard-working despite constant interaction with the public -- this is significant: the staff continue to perform very, very well despite constant exposure to the many visitors to the store!!! I have found some highly unusual, beautiful pieces -- some of which which I wear still - and which have marked a number of important celebrations in my life. Was saddened that there have been mean reviews -- why? the staff are patient, very hard working, ethical and festive. There are some international designer pieces of the very best quality, and the place is easy to shop in. The staff are willing to help! Might I suggest that those who are very dissatisfied look to their attitude -- is it possible you are prima donnas? I am not trying to be mean-spirited here myself, but as I realize how businesses benefit or are undermined by accusatory "reviews" - must ask you to please review your consciences. Are you being fair? Was it a bad day in your life when you happened to vist GOODBYES? I believe this is a very well run business, with hard-working and amenable staff -- and wish the very best for this wonderful resource. This is for the men's store: It's a swanky neighborhood, so there a LOT of good cast-offs in here. It's hit or miss, of course, as is always the case at consignment stores. Some of the shoes are scuffed but all of the other clothes I've gotten have always been in perfect condition. I suspect they must get a lot of shoplifting here, because the clerks always seem suspicious of me every time I shop here. read more

Okay, so Goodbyes isn't actually perfect. It's too crowded, the woman who aggressively mans the fitting rooms is not my favorite, and the handbags are WAY overpriced. No way am I paying $400 for a used bag, I don't care if it's balenciaga. That being said, I have gotten some killer pieces here that are in great shape. Some samples: Gorgeous, pristine victorian-meets-military 3/4 length wool coat for $100; brand new with tags margaret o'leary work skirt for $30; citizens jeans for $40, etc. You wealthy, spoiled-yet-obscenely-chic pac heights ladies keep on buying new things and bringing the old ones here. I'm so disappointed with all their locations. I have used them numerous times for personal items and items with my business. I've both consigned and bought. Occasionally I'll pick up a nice St. John suit, which is why I give them some stars. However, they rarely have anything worth noticing, frankly the majority of their clothes should have been thrown out with the garbage. And they turn down quality things because either a) they might be vintage b) it's not a brand they carry. While I can respect they don't carry all brands, they turned down my $500 I. magnin shoes and other designer goods. And they wouldn't take my ferragamos because they're vintage. Their business model is failing them and their stores are archaic. Moreover, the majority of their staff are very curt and I rarely see them offer assistance to people. I have to say that I have had nothing but success here. Where do you go to get the best buck for clothes that you no longer want. Granted you'll be disappointed if you are not dealing with high designer duds...I've mad some serious cash here, of course it gets re-invested back into my wardrobe. GB has some great things to buy too. I have found some really good new with tags designer items here at bargain prices. As for the sales people..they have been nothing but nice to me...granted this is at the men's shop....but they are great! When I'm in SF I stop by this place to see what's new. Haven't found much for me (either too young, too old or too strange) and almost nothing in jeans in an 8 or 9 when I show up. Popular size. Anyhow, I needed a ball gown for an event and this was the first store I walked into on the first day of shopping. Tried on a mess of different styles for fun and they actually had my size in ball gowns - tons of them. Found a perfect Laundry by Shelly Segal lavendar gown for $63 and decided my search was over that second. Upon going to the register we had to wait while the staff helped out another customer who apparently was buying most of the name brand stuff. We were only buying a dress, so I guess we could just wait while they socialized with her. She ended up NOT having enough credit to get her pile of beaded designer stuff and finally left the store. I noticed, during the long wait to buy this gown, that there was a small snag and rip right where the zipper started in the very back of the gown. No matter, the price was what it was and I had to fix it myself. Nice. The gown wasn't cleaned and my cleaner who I trust who's an expert in fashions, tailoring, etc., said "oh, this dress is filthy AND do you know that it's a sample dress?". So, the $63 dollar find ended up costing another $50 to 'fix' so I'd be presentable at my event. I guess this is the way consignment store stuff goes, and that's okay, but when I asked the same store about a Vera Wang gown that I never wore (the event was cancelled and I didn't like the dress anyways) with the original tags still on it the lady who runs the operations says "if the dress didn't cost more than $200, I don't want it" - and it cost $150 from what the original owner (bride to be) told me when she got it. Not a lot of customer service there, but I did like the women in the back of the store who help you to cut back on lifted items, I'm sure, but they treat you much better back there than they do up front at this store. I'll go back out of curiosity to see what items are 'new', but it won't be my first choice to go looking for my next outfit. read more

High-end shirts, designer clothes, wool sweaters at a bargain. One of the best second-hand clothing shops in the city. This is where I purchase most of my shirts, sweaters, and jackets. They often have brand-new articles, priced the same as lightly worn articles. Overall a great place to shop for clothes. Style is clean / sleek: Banana Republic, Hugo Boss etc. Mostly caters to Pac Heights and Marina types. Service is a bit cold and you will get hustled out of the shop if you stay past the closing time. Also, they don't offer volume discount or any sort of discount (even on damaged pieces), which is really too bad. read more

Goodbyes is one of those many hidden gems in San Francisco especially if you're looking for unique hard-to-fit clothes. Their inventory isn't very big, but each time I've gone there, I have great luck in finding an item that I can't find anywhere else - not Macy's, eBay or even Amazon. The pricing is reasonable ($50 for a cashmere coat). This is a no-duh in SF, but the parking is horrendous. Wish these guys moved to the Silicon Valley, but I imagine it just wouldn't be the same - lots of Google polo shirts instead of a cashmere coat! read more

While they do have a lot of clothing and a lot of designer clothing at that. The prices are still a bit steep for my cheap-ass. They are however very fair given that most items still have original tags on. But when I go to consignment shops I mainly look for steals not just deals. Granted to pay $400 something for a Missoni with original price tags (that stated it was over 2k) is a great deal. But shelling out $400 odd bucks for a light blue muppet coat I will never wear is not something I'm likely to do. I did find some Cop Copine dresses that I want. But again, even though they still had their original tags on and probably retailed for well over $200, I can't see myself paying more than $50. While I've been going here for years, the last several excursions have not delivered any real finds. Prices are lower than Cris, that's for sure, but you do have to wade through a lot to find that hidden gem. Handing over your purse is a nuisance...and along with the security cameras, the count of your items before you're allowed to try, and the 70's Muzak, dampen the overall experience....and who needs that, especially in Pac Heights? read more

I love this place, I've been going there for more than ten years, and I have gotten a lot of clothes there throughout the years. I live a block and a half away so I have the luxury of being able to go there often. Which, like many such places, is imperative if you want to find the good stuff, because the good stuff goes fast. Goodbyes is a bargain hunter's paradise, but only the decisive bargain hunter. Do not think you can come back later and get something in this place, I can attest from long experience, eight times out of ten, it will not be there. I've learned, just buy it. The only reason I don't give the place five stars is its really, really musty. Especially the women's store across the street. My girlfriend likes the place but can't be in there long because her allergies go totally nuts. read more

I'm not a fan of the older people working there, but I gave this store a try. It's a huge hit or miss, but I found a Marc Jacobs suit. I've never seen his suits sold outside of his Maiden Lane store, so I figured it was indeed rare. Anyways, thanks to GoodByes, I got a 2.5K suit for like $350 in excellent condition. My sister also found Miu Miu skinny jeans here for like $40. I think it's worth a check; you may find something rare in here! This review is for the men's store. Large selection of designer used clothing at a really cheap price. Most of what they carry is semi used but in good condition. Today was the first time I went into both stores and though the staff is a tad odd in the sense that they seem either over suspicous of customers (could it be b/c I was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and my sweatpants?) or they are running around yelling in their headsets. Regardless, they left me alone and one person was kind enough to even greet me. This place is organized, clean, and really makes you feel like you can hunt through the racks. The aisles are not overstuffed with crap as some other stores which I appreciate. Prices seem reasonable. I found a great pair of shoes in mint condition and designer for $40 so I won't hate. Maybe I will try consigning next. I do like the fact that they donate items for folks after the consignment period is over and give you receipts. Very cool. FYI - they don't take AMEX. read more

I've been back quite a few times after my first post and have purchased a few items already. Living in this neighborhood and being a SAHM, the only clothes shopping options I have are online shopping or the stores along Sacramento which are either extremely expensive or consignment stores. I've learned the trick is to go straight for your size. They're really selective about what they take so you don't have to worry about fuzz balls, rips, tears, etc. We have yet to consign our stuff here. Just don't have the time to go through our closets. One can spend a long time here. It can be fun if you don't have your stroller with you! read more

I have been shopping here for a few years now. I was never disappointed simply because i can always get really nice clothes with good price. Things I mostly got are from a few designers: Dolce & Gabana (D&G), Armani Collection, Moschino, Marni, Prada. Sometimes I find European (mostly France or Italy) made, or Australian made silk tops and skirts that are seemingly in mint condition, some even has labels. For me, Goodbyes is like a Neiman Marcus outlet ;-) I love their Sale event, where it can be a madness because it can be crowded, but everything is so reasonably priced. I also recently took some of my own clothes here to consign, they took some and pretty quickly sold some of them and sent me a check in the mail. What can be better than recycling? read more

As other Yelpers have posted - sellers BEWARE. This store engages in very shady business practices with regards to consignment. They claim that they will donate any unsold clothes at the end of 60 days, but this is a hard lie. Instead, they take any unclaimed, unsold clothes (without consignor's consent or knowledge) and resell - taking the full profit. I learned the hard way, electing to "donate" to charity, only to find my items back at the store, at full price and no money from them. read more

I've both bought and sold clothing here over the past two years, and I've learned Goodbyes is a hit or miss type of place. If you don't see anything that you like (and fits), just go back in a couple of months and there will be more clothing to swim through. My best find was a Kenneth Cole suit for around $160. But there are plenty of things on the rack that I just can't understand why they are there. Also, the space is very small (cramped in most areas), and the lighting is poor (at best). But if you can deal with the fact that you might not find something, it's OK. That's the nature of things at these types of places. However, the more frustrating side of things is trying to sell clothing. It isn't quite right to call the short-haired (and frequently short-tempered) Latina who makes the decisions "picky". I always bring my dress shirts fresh from the dry cleaners, but apparently they frequently don't cut it. Also a unblemished Banana Republic jacket didn't get much of a look before her cold rejection. Maybe business isn't too good now, and there isn't much room on the racks. I guess I will try to sell the remainder of my pile at Crossroads. read more

GO NAKED before shopping at this store. If I could give no stars I would. I have been going in here for about 8 years. You can find some good things but -- and take this VERY seriously -- it is NOT worth it. I honestly believe that this Margaret, the owner, must have been in some "center" at some point, has an "in" there and gets her employees on some sort of a parole-type of arrangement. Why? Because they are all out of some psych ward or rehab center. I am not the only reviewer over the years who says this. She and the people in that store are BEYOND strange...and they are all utterly TERRIFIED of Matron Margaret. Say her name and they almost cringe and whimper. And then, there is "the big nurse" who is now usually across the street but a big, hulking bear of a woman who you immediately realize is "not right."I have seen things more than once that were so jaw-droppingly unbelievable that I was looking around for the camera -- as if it were some cruel joke that was going to be on "what would you do"? People being screamed at and thrown out of the store for politely asking if there is a restroom they could use...? They barged in and almost physically ejected a poor woman from the fitting room -- because she had complained that a dog was in the store and was actually lying on clothes on the banquette in the fitting room (she said she was allergic to dogs -- as if even that matters! What kind of a store would allow this?) The last time was the third time I'd seen sheer scary craziness from the staff -- and I'll never set foot in there again. Never. I had a friend with me who I'd been telling about the place -- she came over from Alameda to shop with me and -- I'll never hear the end of it. Months later, she's still saying "WHERE was that place that you took me? With the mental ward inmates?" I have found some decent things in there over the years, but a lot of it is "tired" and they've raised their prices considerably over the last 2 years. Unfortunately the change in leadership has lead to a smaller selection of interesting clothes, shoes and bags. Goodbye's seems to accept consignments only if they are on their list of designers, with no consideration for other great clothes of good quality, that would appeal to customers. Goodbye's, please look at the clothes brought in, instead of only the labels. Your shop used to be wonderful, with a lot of great stuff, but in the last year it has gotten harder and harder to find anything. read more

Be careful when you send in your consignment items. I signed up its "drop off" program which means I can just walk in and drop off items and they will inform me the status of the sales. I left them email and phone number when I drop off several designer items. I NEVER HEARD FROM THEM, NO PHONE CALLS, NO VOICE , MESSAGE NEITHER EMAIL. Half year later. They said they donated my items ( a few are designer pieces). I am shocked by how irresponsible they are. I also feel this drop off program is tricky. Suspicious. I keep thinking that their operation isn't on the "up and up". I put a St. John dress and a pair of Alexander Wang pumps on consignment there (both worn once), months went by and I didn't hear anything. after being completely humiliated and traumatized several years ago in an attempt to sell my clothing at crossroads & buffalo exchange i had vowed never to attempt at consignment again. but tough times and some winter weight gain had me reconsidering. after some careful research i settled on goodbyes and prepared myself for the worst. luckily, none of the nightmares i imagined actually happened. a small framed asian girl with the pretty eyes looked through my clothing slowly, folding everything neatly, with not a single gesture of condescension. in the end they took half my stuff! it was a mix of ferragamo, anthro, bcbg, true religion, and even *gasp* my old navy skinny jeans?? surprisingly they passed on my nice wool zara & jcrew slacks. i'll be back to rate again in 2 months when i pick up my stuff. it's 50/50, you get paid once a month and can go back for what remains or they will donate it. hopefully i made some money and they didn't lose any of my clothes! read more

The staff is rude, overbearing, pushy, I feel sorry for the employees that feel that this is the way to treat customers. What difference does it make how great your inventory and prices are if the service is lacking or in this store non existing. I have returned several times thinkIng that this treatment must be an Isolated incident but NO it is a store policy to treat the customers poorly. Who is in charge?? Two stars for interesting selection and reasonable prices. Minus three stars for catty, mean sales clerks. When I walked in to the Good Byes space shared with the men's section in the afternoon of March 22, the two 30-ish sales clerks were tearing apart a customer who had just departed. Then they moved on to dissing a celebrity, saying she had once been pretty but was now a "fat monster." Their cattiness continued. I haven't heard anything like it since junior high. It made me really uncomfortable, and I wondered what they would say about me when I left. Oh, and neither offered to help me find anything either. I was beneath their notice. It's only by reading other's reviews here that I even know there is a second floor. I guess if I worked in a crowded closet of used clothes I might be bitter too. After hearing about Goodbyes on SF Racked, I decided to try to consign some of my work clothes here. I have had amazing consignment experiences previously at Philadelphia's Second Time Around and also at SF's Cris Consignment. However, the attitude of the people working here really just is not acceptable. When I went in, it was slightly busy but that should be no reason for the buyers to speak to customers rudely. They were incredibly disorganized so I definitely do not recommend consignors to visit this store. read more

The best consignment store I've ever been to, solely due to this lady named "Fran" who is better than a personal shopper (since she just likes to help out for fun)! Consignment stores are so hard to shop in for me, just because I can't get my mind wrapped around all the clothes that are sub-optimally displayed. However, Fran helped me pick out the outfits that I would have never thought to try on my own power, and I came out of the shop with 5 gems! The clothes are great there (can't wait to shop there when I return for a visit), but be careful of the gossip. A friend of mine was overheard loudly talking to me about surgery I had had on my tummy (they had to remove a portion damaged by cancer). Well this woman I believed named Jan started making snide remarks every time I would come in about "can;t believe what people will do on gastric bypass". Every time she would yell out something about weight loss. It was none of her business, but I just let her talk. But then a friend of mine was there when Julia Roberts came in to shop for some things and asked for a restroom and this same woman was nasty to her. So I guess it's pretty much the same. Laurel Heights socialites and grande dames from Pacific Heights bundle up their barely worn designer duds and drop them off here for resale to those with a taste for high fashion and budgets that inhibit them from buying new. Apparently the husbands are willing to hang onto their wardrobes a lot longer than the little ladies, because menswear is limited and tends to be slightly out of style. Come back in two months and you'll find the same suits hanging on the racks. Definitely appears to be a better deal for women. read more

Wow. I sort of can't believe that I've been recommending Goodbyes to friends and SF newcomers for as many years as I have, given my most recent experience there. I have had success consigning many terrific pieces with Goodbyes over the past year, and have had great experiences with two buyers in particular during that time -- these ladies were professional, fast, and funny, and always a pleasure to work with. They kept me coming back to Goodbyes, both as a consignee and a shopper. Now, not so much, I'm afraid. The last three times I've been in, the staff members were beyond rude, and, far worse, seemed well out of their depth. Last week, in a stunning crescendo of ineptitude, the crackerjack staff managed to donate several of my items without telling me -- items that I had in fact asked to reclaim. I plan to tell this story in the same way I used to sing Goodbyes' praises -- loudly, and often. Going forward, I think I'll just donate what I have to one of the many worthy organizations here in town. A 50/50 split hardly seems worthwhile, given all the agita. Good luck, Goodbyes! I could deal with the attitude but this time when I went back to pick up a dress (silk, designer and worn only once), it was handed back to me wadded up in a plastic bag with shoes.
