I've never had poor service from the WOC who work there, but one white woman just has a HUGE chip in her shoulder about something. Normally both my boyfriend and I love browsing the racks (this appears to be the only store in the city that sells new Issey Miyake, which we both love). But if she's not staring you down for deigning to be a Brown poor touching clothes (CAREFULLY, as I work in the fashion industry and understand how to handle high end garments), then she's staring down at her phone loudly watching Tiktoks to make sure you understand that you are beneath her. Have tried multiple times to enjoy our time here (again! The WOC in the store have never treated us with anything but friendliness and respect!), but alas this was our last visit. read more

In response to your response : Hi MIO, I appreciate your response, but I need to clarify my experience from my side because the way this unfolded was very different from what you are describing. When I originally reached out, I explained that I am a recent cancer survivor and that several items did not fit me due to changes in my body. I was told clearly over the phone that I could return them. Based on that conversation, I returned all the items exactly as instructed using the prepaid label provided. When no refund was issued, I contacted American Express for guidance. They told me that since I had returned the items and did not receive credit, I should open a dispute -- so I followed their instructions. During the investigation, AMEX informed me that your company stated you had never received any of the items. That was extremely confusing, as I had shipped everything back using the label your team supplied. Now, five months after my original order on July 3rd -- and after the dispute window has closed -- you are attempting to send the items back to me. These are the same items I was originally told I could return, and the same items you told AMEX were never received. From my perspective, this is exactly what I am dealing with and why this situation has been so upsetting. I'm simply sharing my experience so others understand how it played out on my end. I also want to be clear that I do not have the items and I do not want items that do not fit me. I am simply looking for fairness, not merchandise I cannot use. I would genuinely like to resolve this situation. At this time, I do not have the items that were returned nor the credit due for those items. Danger Zone! Mio is a very specialized store, a collection of mostly designer clothes, a lot with those indestructible permanent pleats. The fabric folds into nothing & will never wrinkle. There's some real knockout pieces using Japanese fabric. My downfall is the Issey Miyaki section. Mind you, many of the items drape effortlessly because there's no natural fiber to be had. If you want to splurge, you can assemble a capsule wardrobe in 20 minutes, or spend an hour just looking. I've done both. For several years I would dash in, ever hopeful there would be a Trippen shoe that was actually comfortable. You won't find another company making anything close to their designs. Visualize confetti in air - on my last reconnaissance trip I actually scored a pair! A fashion & orthopedic miracle! Seriously, check them out & see if you're a Mio person. Impressive Issey Miyake selection, I'd recommend a stop in to any fan of the designer since it's fairly rare to find all this in the bay area. They do carry homme plisse as well as pleats please, just not as many pieces. Although they have great stock, the rope at the front feels a bit unnecessary. The sales person was assertive for our tastes, we really didn't have the chance to shop in peace so we left pretty quickly. I think we'll go back eventually though to see how often the stock gets rotated. That's why I want to review and remember this store! read more

The bummer about Mio is that no matter how many times I've visited this store, not one person remembers me or treats me very nicely. I have spent quite a bit of money at Mio over the years and my visit this past weekend was my last. While the clothes and jewelry are beautiful (albeit expensive), it's just not worth it when I'm given the stink eye for walking in with my walking clothes on. Yes, it's true that I generally "power walk" on weekends and sometimes I pop into Mio if I'm on Fillmore. My recent experience was very reminiscent of the scene from Pretty Woman where the sales staff assumed that Julia Roberts couldn't possibly afford to shop in there based solely on her appearance. The gals at Mio peered at me over their spectacles and quickly assessed that I wasn't worthy of their time (swift dismissal). Not cool, ladies. Yes, I'm wearing walking gear but in my pocket is a credit card that works! When I actually braved the sour faces and tried several items on in the dressing room, Mio herself opened the curtain and when she saw me sitting on the chair, she asked me in alarm what I was doing! I looked at her in disbelief and said that I was putting my shoes back on. Sigh. So not worth the weird attitude. :( read more

I called Mio to say that I had about 20 minutes to find something to wear to an event. I was very precise about size and styles. After being assured by s a person named Suzanne that they had things which would work I made a huge effort to get there and deal with the usual upper Fillmore parking. Not only was this Suzanne person not ready for me, but the other person on duty at the time who I believe is the freaking owner, sort of abandoned me! Owner was dicking around the the cash register and the sales clerk vanished in back. I wandered around on my own. I kept saying to their deaf ears, I like this, find me this in my size, but they didn't care and where not available. I finally left in disgust with my credit card which has unlimited credit. Their loss. Go to Metro 200 instead and see Lisa who'll care about you. By the way that tacky add from Marian P is really appalling and ugly. read more

Honestly this is a pretty sick store. If you're a rick owens, cdg, yohji, issey kinda girl, this store (to me) is of similar aesthetic which is so great in my opinion since I hardly find these sort of styles in women's clothing retailers. While they don't actually seem to sell rick or cdg or yohji they have a bunch of designers from new york and germany that I would have never heard of (maybe some smaller designers?) that have similar appeal and made well. The sales are great, and puts already mid-priced clothing (for the quality) cheaper. The staff are also super helpful and attentive, a bunch of super cool fashionable old ladies. (honestly not meant as an insult. I wanna be that steezy when i'm 50) One of my favorite places to shop in SF. read more

Catch their end of season sales in January because most of the things in their store are very expensive but sufficiently unique for comfortable clothing. I bought a beautifully hand sewn black coat for $700 with a silk lining that I still get compliments on and I know that I will not run into another woman wearing this same jacket. I bought a sweater at Mio. Took it home and my husband noticed a tear near the seam. I called and talked to the owner MIo. Brought it back to the store, she did not offer to find a new one to replace it. Then she turned the table on me saying I should have looked more carefully before buying the sweater. I told her she is the store owner and she should not have put damaged merchandise on the shelf. She refused to give me a refund, took the sweater and her alteration person sewed the tear to the seam and that was it. Very very disappointed with her attitude and the service. Recently, my wife bought a fairly expensive dress from Mio, but upon coming home she found a tear in one of the side seams...The item had been in the back room for some reason. We called back and took the garment back and the clerk said that they would cover the cost to fix it...a total of $20. However they, Mio, changed their minds. What a shame that the VERY best salesperson here, Barbara, left (or was more likely driven off by the weird mood shifts of the owner). The store has interesting (and expensive!) clothing but the vibe here is so strange that it's hard to feel comfortable. Also, there's almost always one of the salespeople or the owner standing out in front smoking and the smell drifts into the store. Yuck. I've been shopping in Mio for over 15 years. When I wear clothes from Mio I feel like I am wearing something special. Many of the clothes are made from interesting fabrics and/ or a design I wouldn't necessarily see in any other store in the Bay Area. I still get ohhs and awas for clothes I bought there several years ago. Many of the clothes I purchased were made by artists who design clothes. I rarely come to the store looking for a particular thing, but every time I do come in I find so many things that I like it makes it difficult to choose. Mio is a classic: a steadfast Fillmore Street boutique offering beautiful, well-made clothing. The entire staff have backgrounds in fashion design and textiles. Mio herself buys in Paris and New York every season and chooses pieces you will not see in many other boutiques. I've been shopping at Mio for 13 years, since I was a "younger woman." I am surprised by the earlier reviewer's comment about "very old women." This underscores a trend I've noticed in the City over the years--older people are looked down upon, ignored or deemed "un-cool." Is the reviewer implying that the presence of "very old women" somehow taints an environment? Was the women's movement not enough to bring a halt to this kind of thinking? That said, yes, the typical, entitled little 20 - something isn't going to be tempted to enter by Mio's sophisticated interior, the absence of thumping techno music, or lack of chirpy sales-kids. Fine. Best go to Betsey Johnson next door for that. Meanwhile I'll be shopping in tranquility among friendly people who remember me each time I go in who lend personal attention to each shopper. I went to this store looking for a particular pair of Trippen shoes, which they did not carry. One of the women working there suggested I try buying them online. She then proceeded to run around helping me figure out which Trippen shoes to try on so I could get the right size online - she gave me superior service, even though she knew I didn't intend to purchase anything that day! I think I understand the mixed reviews -- I think it depends on who you interact with. Maybe. I went in this store, very excited for their big Trippen selection (one of my favorite brands of shoes, and they are hard to find). I found a pair that I liked, but I was afraid it was too small. The sales people were very nice. The main woman who helped me kept saying that the size should be fine because trippen always run small and they stretch out. I couldn't remember what size I had at home (and I don't live in SF, but I come every 3 weeks). I was very concerned, but she kept reassuring me that they will stretch. So I bought them (they are not cheap) and brought them home. They were a size smaller than the pairs I have at home. I wore them around the house and they were incredibly painful. I called the store and the owner answered. She said because it had been a couple of days past their exchange policy, I couldn't exchange them because I could have worn them outside, which I did not. She said I should just wear them and that they would be fine. Which is a terrible suggestion. So, my friend got a new pair of shoes and Mio lost what would have been a long term, loyal shoe customer. read more
