Everything was very cute there. The items they sell are cute but I didn't have a great experience with one of the employees managing the cashier. She was quite rude and also made a comment that was uncalled for. She was giving us dirty stares and when I asked her for help finding a wedding guest dress, she picked something out. I told her it was too big, and my friend confirmed it looked too big. The lady then made a comment saying "if you say so" while making a face. I have scored SO many classic timeless pieces that I have been rocking for years and always get compliments on! I started shopping here at least 10 years now though it is not as frequent since I moved out of SF. I do still pop in when I am in can but I just had to share what a gem of a store this is!! I got the most gorgeous gold Diane von Furstenberg shoes that are sexy and classic (and comfy) ...a gorgeous elegant red BCBG evening gown that still had the tags on that looks like it was made for me and I have worn it several times to events and I swear it was just like $80... a stunning Italian hard clutch evening bag that is white and gold with a gold chain and it is so uniquely gorgeous... This is in my top five favorite consignment shops of the Bay Area. The people who work here are soo nice and helpful and the clothes are fabulous. There's some arty interesting stuff for those of us just not wanting conventional union street boring stuff. I came two weeks ago en route to a major party and Bruce who works there guided me to the world's most amazing Italian lace dress. I never would have noticed it myself and once it was on a curvy body like mine it came Alive. And all for under little over $100. It fit like a glove...and to his credit he didn't try to convince me instead to buy a more expensive dress i tried on too. It's just a great spot. The measurements give me piece of mind so I know when the clothing I like will fit or may need slight alteration once I receive it. I shop with complete confidence. Hands down the best consignment store in the Bay Area! The store has such a good selection and unique finds, I never know what I am going to walk away with. The staff is friendly and always helpful, which makes it an even better shopping experience. Ilona, the owner really knows what she is talking about and is also a wardrobe stylist. I really shouldn't write this review because the more people that discover this place the more risk of shopping competition for me - but this is a really cool place and I'm always happy with what I'd find - and I can't be selfish with happiness - I have to share To be clear, I *love* this place; and, it quickly became my favorite consignment in town for two reasons: FIRSTLY, it's exceptionally well curated - or, in other words, there is more fashion amazingness per square foot here than anywhere else - all at fair price. SECONDLY are Tanya and Ilona, the two women who run Closet 1951. They are like hot, fun, fashionista-savants who have this hard wired ability to meet you and know *exactly* what will look amazing on you based on their current inventory - it's crazy amazing. The first time this happened to me was when I asked them to help me pick out something new to go out dancing in that night. Tanya went to the other side of the store picked out a dress for me to try on - so I did - and it was perfect - first try - I was super happy. The dress fit well and flattered my figure to the point I actually said "Damn!" when I looked in the mirror - it remains one of my favorite pieces today. This has happened to me a few times. I have had a few unpleasant interaction with the shop owner. Quite frankly, she seems greedy, pressures her buyers, and pretends she is looking out for their best interest. I brought a few items in to be priced. Because the owner was not in, I left them in a bag with her assistant and was very clear that I wanted to get the items priced before they would be for sale. I even went so far as to text the owner to clarify this. Sure enough, when I went in a few days later to talk over the prices and pick up an item I had bought, I asked for my items back and all of them had been on the floor with price tags on. Overall, I think that is pretty unprofessional. read more

I happened upon Closet 1951 while walking down Union Street looking for shops that might have a long flowy blue dress for a trip to the beach. Figured why not see if there's any unique finds and great deals in this consignment store. The high-end labels are no joke - one of the dresses I tried on was an amazing gucci piece - floor length black chiffon/tulle over light pink silk. I also tried on an interesting long orange/red/black wrap dress by Cynthia Rowley I think... neither dress was what I was looking for, but still it was diverting. When I came out of the dressing room however no one was around. The shop lady had left a note saying back in 5, but left the sign saying open and the sandwich board outside on the side walk. But the door was locked. Hmmm... so I was locked in for about 45-60 minutes until she came back. I really appreciate her generous gesture to make amends - she gave me a Chaiken dress free of charge. I'm pretty stoked with the dress. I want to go back mostly for the selection of fancy items in great condition. On my way out she said "I'm crazy, but I'm the best." Ding ding ding! read more

This is one of my favorite consignment stores in SF. It's small and has a friendly atmosphere. Lots of high end designer labels are here (I even found a good number pieces of Chanel, Masimo, Galliano, and McQueen here!). The store has a very impressively vast collection for any season of the year. The store curators are very knowledgeable and pick out the best outfits in your style and size, they love and know fashion, they've helped me find a lot of interesting outfits. Happy and satisfied. Due to an unfortunate circumstance that hit me the first of the year, I was forced to step my game up and really clean out my closet. I had three items (small purses (Dior and Gucci) and a clutch (Tory Burch) that I haven't worn in many years in good/fair condition. I shopped around for consignment stores in my area (Tri-Valley), with no success. So I yelped for SF and this store was first to pull up on my search. Glad I found this place. The owner, Ilona, was very thorough and kind in explaining how her store's process works should my items sell. In a matter of a month or so, all three sold and I got really good prices on them too. I received my check in the mail yesterday, which was quick. Thanks to Closet 1951 and Ilona for whatever it is they did to make it sell, but I'm thankful to have found them. Closet 1951 is the perfect boutique store for me. I normally avoid small shops because the sales clerks seem disinterested or aloof. But not at Closet 1951. Not only are they inviting, but they are also well-informed and helpful with feedback as you try things on. The owner is lovely and very involved in the business. Her consigners all have great taste and so does she, which means she always has a good selection of clothes, shoes and accessories. Everything is in great condition, with a wide variety of styles, colors, and designers. There's something for everyone here. More importantly, however, this store is run by good people. This is really important to me. Icing on the cake: it's in hip neighborhood, the music is fun, and the atmosphere always makes me feel cool and stylish. read more

I tried selling two pairs of shoes here over the past few years. Both experiences were incredibly unprofessional and I would highly discourage anyone from trying to sell their goods here. The first pair was an unworn pair of Louboutins. After a few months I had heard nothing from them. Repeated calls to their number went unanswered. Finally I tracked down the owner who said they were unsold. Again, several months went by. I heard nothing ma couldn't get ahold of anyone, until I finally went into the store, and was told they'd been sold six months previously. The man who helped me was very nice, and assured me that it was an unusual oversight and that I could pick up a check the next day for them. I took this nice man at his word and dropped off another pair of shoes with them to sell. I came back two days later and picked up my check for the first pair. Then the next day I get a rude call from one of the owners saying "I don't want these shoes. Come pick them up." Why this wasn't communicated to me when I was in the day before I have no idea. I live nowhere near this store so it took me a week or so to get in. I finally was able to go in today to pick them up, but the woman working couldn't find them after searching for twenty minutes. She told me to come back in another half hour at which point they had found the shoes and gave them to me in a ratty bag rather than the original box I had brought in. This is a really disorganized business run on the whims of caprice rather than anything solid. Hours posted on Yelp are not adhered to, and as I mentioned the phone goes unanswered all the time. I would look elsewhere if you are interested in selling anything as it is entirely more hassle than it is worth. read more
