We've been coming in here since they used to do kids haircuts a few years ago, and even though that's not a thing any more, they've still got all the things. You may be able to get some of that stuff for a couple dollars cheaper on the internets (or you may not), and then you get to make a billionaire more billions. But you live in Brooklyn because you like it here. You like it here because of the amazing local businesses around. So buy your stuff here. This is a family shop, run by the nicest people, and if you want these things to stay, you need to keep your money local. Last time in, they asked my wife to come back and pick up the scooter for my daughter later on, because their best gift-wrapper wasn't there at the moment. They wanted us to have our gift wrapped right, and I appreciate that. We'll be back, over and over again.

Less than two weeks after purchase, the fabric appeared discolored after I got caught in a very light rain/mist. I gently tried to clean it using a toothbrush and water. The discoloration grew. When I took the bag back to the store, the owner blamed me for trying to clean the bag. I told her I thought a $450 handbag should be more durable. She told me care instructions were on a website that she tells all customers about. However, she never mentioned a website to me and when I pointed that out, she once again blamed me -- it was my fault for not asking if there was a website. Huh? I'm going to try to get a refund directly from my credit card company. I'm totally frustrated by this experience as I want to support small businesses and female entrepreneurs, but this was a terrible experience. Poor quality product, terrible customer service. Concerned about the longevity of this cute shop.

And this happened twice! The first time around, I expected what would be a normal, adequate response: that they would refund or exchange the bag. Not so! Instead, I spent three weeks bringing my bag back into the store (one time having to wait an hour for the store to open because they happened to be late that day), awaiting feedback/response from them, and waiting for it to be sent out to their "specialists". After this lengthy process, they said they would have the bag cleaned and cover the cost (umm, shouldn't that be a given??). They then came back and said the discoloration was from denim, and suggested I stay away from wearing the bag with jeans (which I wear every day). The extremely unhelpful manager told me to "have fun with the bag! wear it with your dresses and skirts!". Unhappily, I took the bag back, and after a few weeks of being scared to take it out of the dust bag, decided to give it another go. I wore it one day with a white dress (devoid of any color, just in case). The next day, I wore it with a light grey cotton dress. And low and behold, that evening I noticed staining on the bag! I once again reached out to the store, and the response I got was essentially the same as before "Every bag that is purchased from our store has a leather care card inside for guidelines regarding light-colored bags, and dyes having the potential to crock onto them. Additionally, we have further instructions on our website for care and maintenance. We address care instructions with purchase due to this potential crocking being increased with a white bag. This is the nature of a white item's affinity to coloration." So basically: I cannot wear this bag with jeans. I cannot wear it with dresses. My question for Kempton & Co. is, what can I wear it with!? Do yourself a favor: avoid this store. They have cute, unique style but the quality is abysmal and the customer service even worse.

You sort items into various categories according to their easy to follow charted system. I went with a friend and we worked alongside a few other volunteers. We used scissors to remove labels, zippers, buttons etc. It was interesting to see all the fabrics,sample clothing, trimmings etc. The staff is very welcoming and provide all the instructions. They are available throughout the shift to address any questions you have. At the end of the 3 hour shift you get yo take home 5 pounds of fabric of your choosing (free) . They have a shopping room that you can buy additional materials and trimmings too at 30% discount . The prices are way below traditional fabric shops. If you're a sew/craft lover you will be happy in the shopping room. If you're looking for a place to volunteer that offers a different experience then try a shift here. The shifts offered are 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. It's located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. It's a warehouse type atmosphere but downstairs you can find food and coffee etc so don't think it's a desolate area. I look forward to doing some more shifts here.

A girl named Lilli helped me and was very pleasant and helpful, and even sent me a message after I left the store to let me know the price of an item that wasn't marked, once she messaged the owner and heard back. Today, 5/31/19, I went back into the store with every intention of buying one of the wine racks. A different girl was working and when I brought the rack up I asked if she could do any better on the price. Since she wasn't the owner of the store she said she couldn't alter the prices. When I asked if she could write the owner, just as the girl had done the previous day, she told me that, "It would be kind of annoying." Just to make sure I had heard correctly, I asked her what she said, and in reply she repeated, "It...would...be...kind...of...annoying," this time drawling out her words. I was pretty shocked that the customer service today was so awful, especially since I was the only person in the store at the time. I left, deciding that I would rather spend my money elsewhere.
