Good Family Bakery (雙龍珠餅屋; something like Double Dragon Ball Cookie House -- and also the Chinese name of Yu Bakery on 86th Street -- I don't know if they're related) doesn't look like much from the outside. Before the Covid-19 quarantine began, Good Family Bakery's storefront looked rather nondescript, in contrast with other Chinese bakeries on Avenue U, which enjoyed the bustle of regular customers who hung out inside until those bakeries closed for the evening. So for years, we never thought to step inside -- until we read the Yelp reviews on this place. Good Family offers a good, basic dim-sum selection, at great prices. Good Family's food seemed to be executed almost if not as well as the dim-sum offerings from next door, Season Restaurant. It seems these two establishments may have recently merged or begun to share operations, for dim-sum at least. All orders are take-out during the Covid-19 quarantine. The bakery now uses its seating area to display baked goods, such as sponge cakes ($1.50 each or 3 for $4) and walnut muffins ($2 each / or 4 for $6). I'm more partial to the walnut muffins. While the sponge cakes are huge, they can be dry. Good Family also has some old-school treats that are good to see but aren't as well-made, such as white sugar sponge cakes (白糖糕) and red bean sponge cakes (紅豆糕). In recent weeks, the bakery has added refrigerated cake display cases as it ventures into offering higher-end cakes, cake slices, and other cold desserts that seem to be mostly from 18th Avenue's Joe Bakery. The tiramisu ($3.75, non alcohol only) and coconut pudding (椰汁佈丁, $2.75 for approximately 11 ounces) are both tasty. The latter is a creamier, sweeter version of the dessert often available at dim-sum restaurants as a palate cleanser. Food: Good (3 of 5). Value: Very Good (4 of 5).

Gummy, pasty wrappers on the shrimp dumplings was a disappointment. The soy sauce noodles were dry. This is a small hole in the wall establishment on Ave U surrounded by several other Asian businesses. Bakery goods in the front, hot dim sum in the back. Prices are reasonable. No need to go back and order from here again, there are better places around.

Dim sum in a bakery?! Yes! Good Family Bakery is an old school place with matching decor. Doesn't look like much on the outside of the store either, but inside exists pretty good dim sum. Most of it is kept hot in a steamer cabinet. You can't really see any of it so go in here with an idea of what you want. They just have the basics so don't go looking for anything too exotic. Most people come in here for takeout. I had the shu mai and beef rice noodles. Both were good. It's on par with local dim sum restaurants. Dishes are under $3. Shu mai competition! Did a side by side taste test with a local dim sum restaurant. Good Family's version won out. Less fatty and better flavor. Besides dim sum, their baked goods are pretty good too. An all time favorite is "paper bag" cupcakes. These are huge. Also, on the counter, are old school pastries like red bean jelly cakes (hong dau gou). Sweet, chewy, squishy goodness! An old fashioned favorite. Seating: There are quite a few tables. Service: Efficient. Counter service only.

Best on-the-go dim sum spot on Avenue U. I've been coming to Good Family Bakery for years and always found their dim sum to be on point whenever I visited. Where most of the bakeries on Avenue U are actually bakeries and do not serve dim sum, Good Family Bakery makes for a great one stop shop if you're looking to grab and go with a bakery bun or fill your appetite with a more hearty snack in the form of dim sum. The bakery has the vibe of any ol' Chinese bakery and you're not going to get the friendliest service at times, especially if you don't speak Cantonese, but you will be served quickly and competently. There are tables and seats inside and most are usually occupied by regulars, as in the elderly, but there is an empty table or 2 at most times in the morning. They're always open early on a daily basis and carry plenty of different dim sum favorites, such as, beef rice rolls, shrimp rice rolls, shrimp dumplings, pork and shrimp dumplings, pan-fried chive or leek dumplings, spring rolls, steamed pork ribs, chicken feet, beef meatballs, pan-fried turnip cake, sticky rice and egg tarts. And they keep on coming until the morning rush is over. In addition, they have a small section dedicated to congee, chow mein and tripe dishes too. My wife and I have pretty much tried what's what in their dim sum selection and mostly ... mostly everything is excellent. A few dishes might be a bit oily than preferred, like the spring rolls, and the chicken feet has lacked sauce at times. However, ironically, I also love their spring rolls because they are some of the crispiest spring rolls I have ever had anywhere. Although dim sum tends to be a multi-hour sit-down experience filled with family gossip, plenty of tea, many small dishes and the occasional specialty noodle entrée from the kitchen, if you don't have the hours to spare, Good Family Bakery makes for a great no-frills substitute for the on-the-go crowd.

Love the dim sum dishes from this bakery. They are better than a lot of the places in that neighborhood who serve dim sum dishes. I'd definitely return to try their other items The brown sugar cake is one of my childhood sweet treats and I have fond memories about it. I'm glad u finally found a place where they serve the closest in taste to my memories. Their other pastries and dim sum items are good too.

I wish there were more options on avenue u for take out dim sum. The dim sum here is average quality for the dim sum from a Chinese bakery. If you come on a weekend be prepared to wait, the line sometimes goes out the door. The last time I was here I got ignored and the ladies behind the counter proceeded to serve customers behind me on the line. When I asked for service and said I got skipped, there was no apology. I got a rude demand for my order and that was it. If there were more options on Avenue U for take out dim sum I wouldn't come here.

One of the best Bakery dim sum take out places in nyc. Plump shrimp har Joe, tender chicken feet, and flaky crust to their Portuguese egg tarts. Definitely worth coming by.

I had a bad shift at work and was desperately craving some comfort food. I stopped by this bakery because it's one of the few that has good dim sum in the wee hours of the morning. I haven't been here since COVID started so I was surprised to see business was bustling. There was a line throughout the shop but the counter ladies kept it moving quickly. Don't expect top-notch customer service here but do expect quality dim sum, reasonable prices, and variety. All the dim sum plates come in servings of three, except for the buns which are one per order. I ordered: Gwell Choy Bao: round chive and shrimp dumpling with a pan fried bottom. Lots of veggie filling and milder flavor. Ja Ha Keow: fried shrimp ball. One of my favorites! Crispy fried exterior, mashed shrimp and dough interior. Tastes like a fish ball Chun Gwern: spring roll. Very crispy, with a gooey filling, but I couldn't tell what was in it. Sok Mai Jeen Beung: fried corn dumpling. I would pass on this one. It seems to be a pork and corn patty, but the flavor was bland and it could have been crispier. Dai bao: big bun! It has pork filling but no egg. This is like a chinese version of the American breakfast sandwich. $1.75 each. Lao Poar Beung: wife cookie!! This was another that I loved, from the bakery section. It comes in a pack of four minis. I loved how their version didn't have too much pastry and the dough was flaky throughout. The filling is traditionally made from winter melon that is mashed and formed into a paste, but they added strips of candied winter melon, which made it even better.

First time eating from here today. I don't know if it's because it's been a while since I have had a pork bun or a sesame ball but they were really good. Both were warm and buttery. Will definitely be back to try their dim sum and other bakery items.

Good Dim-Sum selections, counter ladies are fast with the orders. Even have the Durian Pastry Roll. Dim Sum price are comparable with seafood restaurants. Place your order for dine-in or takeout. Lots of seniors sitting at the tables chatting or reading news paper.

Dim sum for 5 dollars

This place is a wonderufl place to get cheap dim sum in the area. Everything is so cheap and for under 15 dollars you can get enough to feed 3 people. My only issue is that the food is usually cold even when I eat it there, I'm not sure exactly whats going on but aside from that its some decent food if you happen to be in the area. They close at 5 and at around 4 they offer a discount on everything in the store. They literally end up giving you free stuff, but its very limited being that its the end of the day.

This is my go to place for dim sum. I really love this place because they aren't like any other bakery in ave u. This customer service is always quick and easy. Most of the time I would order their rice rolls. Often they run out of the ones I went but fear not....ah yee to the rescue. If they run out They can make you a fresh one on the spot but there's one catch...you must be patient and wait. I didn't mind because usually it's about a 5 minute wait if there's no other customers. Other places if they are sold out they will not make you fresh ones. Even at 2 pm when dim sum hours are longggggg over they still will make it for you if you ask nicely. Their stuff is often cheap and you can be pretty full with maybe about a 5 dollar purchases. They also have a menu for bubble teas and other drinks that are relevantly the same prices as other bakeries. Their bread and pastries is not as wide variety as ka ka and not as creativity as long Wong down a block but it's still good. If you come during morning and about 3pm you will find a bunch of senior citizens flocked together chatting away. Weekends and holidays especially don't even bother as most of the day is filled with people hustling and building on dim sum orders

The food here genuinely surprised me because everything came out super fresh and hot. We ordered a BUNCH of dishes that I lost track of taking pictures, but a few really stood out. The steamed spare ribs were hot, tender, and flavorful; the taro pieces mixed in were great too. The chicken feet were cut in half for convenience and the taste and texture were spot on. The hargow surprised me with filling that was mostly shrimp which is sometimes too much to ask for sadly. My favorite might've been the honeycomb tripe (not the one in the stew). It came out steaming and had that ideal bounce without being chewy, I'm pretty sure I cleaned more than half of it. Overall, the freshness and heat of every dish made a huge difference. The restaurant had a great vibe and service was good although they accidentally charged us an extra order of chicken feet (which was resolved when we pointed it out). Definitely worth checking out if you're craving dim sum in the city.

It is a chaotic mess for the volume they are trying to do. It's not about adding more manpower, it's about streamlining. Tables are sitting empty while people are on the waitlist (not due to reservations), orders are going to the wrong tables, to-go orders are in disarray and have to be re-verified on multiple orders, and it takes a long time to get some water. The Yelp waitlist is useless here - wait was supposed to be 5-10 minutes and it turned into almost 40. All this could have been avoided with more planning, better organization, and training. Kitchen staff doing their job well. Front of house needs work.
